If something needs our attention on either board, post it here. Someone will probably be along shortly.

Here is the FAQ, if you want to know the rules we live by.

(I just felt like locking a thread...)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

How about updating the Problem? link ath the bottom of the page? I don't know if anyone ever uses it, but still.

Herbstmute (Wintermute), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

good point!!

(unfortunately i have not the technical know-how)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

do we have a policy about stalking/harassment?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Harassment on-board would fall under personal attacks i.e. subject to deletion at the discretion of the attacked person.

If somebody started harassing or stalking somebody else off-board then the best thing to do would be let the mods know (privately if desired) so they can keep an eye on on-board behaviour, but otherwise do the usual things i.e. contact their ISP or the police as neccessary.

We have had one case of this when a former regular's ex showed up and was regularly hostile/threatening. The posts got deleted and he was told to stop it and go away (this was before we had banning abilities, now I think he'd probably be banned) - we also had broad community support against him, which helped us do everything publically.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 1 September 2003 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, can you have a word with Carey, who has not responded to private email, chat requests, and public requests, to stop following me around ILE in stalkerish fashion, posting creepy pictures after my every post? I do hope this can be resolved civilly. I have tried and given up.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Bizarre that this sort of activity has been mentioned as I have received a couple of bizarre, unsolicited and abusive emails from a person I can only presume picked up my details from here (this is the only forum I log into with this email address). I was reluctant to post about it initially as the person lives in the same city as I do. I even know where he works as I checked the email address. I was also concerned that some of my friends here might think it was a joke and post details about me that he might find interesting. I haven't replied to the emails but I was wondering if anyone new (and strange) had turned up on the boards in the last week or so? I don't know this man or why he's *chosen* me. I am tempted to forward his mails to his employer (extreme measure, I know) as he works for a big corporate and they don't look kindly on that sort of thing, I believe.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Do so Lara, if you feel bothered by them.

Also, if bizarre pictures constitute stalking then Dada has been stalking all of us and should be immediately banned. (where is he these days?)

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Orbit, I think if you are to make a case for moderators taking action about Carey, you need to post some links to at least several places where she has done this. And explain why they constitute action against you. Clips from films aren't per se immediately evil things, and following someone around on a message board is far from the same as real-life stalking.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin it is very creepy to have someone post after your every post the same thing. One picture which suggests that perhaps I will be killed in two weeks, or that I am a man, depending, and the other which is a picture of Kathy Bates, also suggesting murder. The same theme every time. Now, to someone, like me, who HAS been someone that has been the victim of attempted murder, once as a child, and once as an adult, this feels pretty freaky and abusive to me, especially when the person doing it will not respond to polite but firm requests to knock it off. If it continues past this point, I will go back and slog thru the threads, posting links, and will politely but firmly request that action be taken. These are not random images, like DaDa, but images linked to violence and murder.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey is not stalking you Orbit, nor is she wishing violence on you. She's just trying to wind you up and it's obviously working.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yes.

I find orbit's sexism quite confusing.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The first lot had nothing at all to do with murder, as far as I'm aware. And I didn't think they were all, by any means, posted by Carey. I don't see any physical threat there at all - the fact that you have been threatened in the past does not make these into threats at all. I assure you that if I did imagine there was any reasonable way of seeing them as threats aimed at you, I would take this very seriously, but I don't. Note that I am speaking for myself here, not all other moderators - but I'll be surprised if any do see them as threatening at all.

People dislike you, and are showing it, and it might be thought that they are taking this to places where it is not relevant or wanted (i.e. away from your own special hate thread and one or two other threads where the arguments have been held), but that is only a minor offence. I know that you are reading things into the pics that are not at all intended to be there.

Also, why just Carey? She has certainly not been alone in this picture posting.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So far:
DON'T THINK (pt. 2): Paste whatever is on your clipboard right now into the window and hit SUBMIT! (unknown)
Which do you prefer, funerals or weddings? (RJG)
This is the thread where you revel in doing some stupid little thing you've been putting off forever and now it's finally done. (carey)
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING RIGHT THIS INSTANT -- with 50% more cleaning power! (unknown)
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING RIGHT THIS INSTANT -- with 50% more cleaning power! (twice RJG, once unknown)
What's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you? (phil-two)

There are two more by Carey that I can't find, and it's not worth my time to look, but this is beyond ridiculous and I have politely said, "this is serious. I am a human being and I am offended. Stop." I have never shown this kind of disrespect to anyone on ILE. I have defended myself from direct attacks, but I have never done this creepy crap, and do you really want ILE to be known for this?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ILE is known for that.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, I dislike Ally. But do you see me trying to creep her out by posting ominous pictures after every post? And what would happen if I did that to Ally? Would your response be the same? Somehow I doubt it.

Why Carey? because she was fresh in my mind because the last two today were from her, and because I had tried email, chat and public requests for her to stop. Now that I cut and paste I see it is Carey and her clique, whatever.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

So Sam, after someone is told, hey this is serious, ILE is known for being assholes? Do you view yourself as an asshole? If so, can *I * say you are assholes?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I think everyone should stop being assholes.

lead the way, please, orbit.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I can be an asshole. Say whatever you like.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm an asshole and a bitch!!! *smooches*

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

First, I've seen you being very disrespectful towards all kinds of people all over the place, but I don't want to get into who started what rows and who has behaved worst, and I haven't been inclined to take action against you either. Secondly, you've been talking only of Carey, but only cited one example of her doing this, and referred to two others. That is not following you everywhere - you are exaggerating this colossally. I don't particularly want ILE known for all kinds of things that go on here, but I can't control that, and I don't see my role at all to be anything to do with protecting someone from pictures they don't like. There is no threatening intent, I am positive, and therefore I don't see there is a call for moderator action.

But I am off to bed now, so some other moderator will have to consider it from here on in.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, about the images, both are linked to violence:
Arnold comes out of the woman, and kills people.
Kathy Bates is a stalker who murders.
The accompanying text is meant to be ominous and it is threatening.

Regarding your comment about my past, I was not threatened, I am talking *attempt* not threat. I finding this truly appalling and quite a double standard.

And RJG it is quite clear that I am not the asshole here. I am not the one following people around and posting creepy things after their every post, now am I?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Martin.

mei (mei), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

So this clique : phil-two, RJG, and Carey anonymously or on their own are doing this, Martin or other moderator. I have never done anything that obnoxious to anyone. Tell me, if I post a photo of a giant asshole after everything YOU post on this board Martin, would you have the same opinion? That's all *I* have to say about it.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

to you is it clear you are not the asshole here. to me it is very clear that you are.

you are of the opinion that some things are creepy. I am of the opinion that some things are funny.

it is your belief that your interpretation of intent is correct. your belief is wrong.

crosspost.

you are very obnoxious.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

all the posts that everyone makes are visible to anyone who looks, google means that what ever anyone writes is visible to anyone who wishes to look. i post what i am happy for others to see, i can only presume others are happy to be known for what they have written. i sometimes wonder if anyone ever feels misinterpreted, but then i think is not that likely, otherwise they would write different things.

this is perhaps of no consequence to the issue at hand, but then i am only me, i am not ile, i dont feel misinterpreted. i have no wish to change anyone elses posts, i just make sure that i am happy with my own, and make sure i give out a representation that i feel happy with.

i have decided against deletion of the pictures. i do not believe they represent a threat of any description. the only pictures i will delete are ones that are unacceptable for those viewing at work.

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

an image that is open to interpretation is just that. i cannot remove such an image.

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Problem is though Orbit, that while I understand your frustration, as I too thought the joke was getting a bit old once Carey picked up on it, she's merely running with what someone (RJG?) started and it was never intended as anything more than a reference to Total Recall, no violence implied (the "two weeks" thing is the only line Arnold as the "fem-skin" thing could say, thats about it to that joke).

The reason it has continued to happen is because some people like winding people up, and you're letting them wind you up. I agree this sucks, but I learnt the hard way (not here, I might add) that letting it shit you only makes it worse, as that reaction is what they're after.

Just my 2c, I'm not a moderator so I can't do anything I'm afraid.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth I am not asking the images be removed.
I am asking that RJG, phil-two and Carey stop stalking me around ILE and posting them after everything I post.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

have you seen 'total recall'?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, no problem, there is no harm in asking them. the decision is entirely down to them. it is of no consequence except to the 4 of you

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Then Gareth, I assume no one will object if I start stalking people around ILE and posting ominous things after *their* every post.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys I know it is only a joke but it *is* getting a bit boring now... isnt it? Humour is fantastic but winding people up is too easy a target.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps orbit, i cannot speak for others, but, as far as i am concerned, you are entirely welcome to post images and 'ominous' things after my posts, if that is what you wish. it is of no consequence to me. others may have different opinions, you will have to ask them.

i will delete any unsuitable for work images, or information about a person they do not wish to be made public however

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

threatening does not = stupid, which is what most of these photo postings are

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

also threatening does not = unfunny, but if it did then ile would be the most terrifing place on the interweb

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ie, i have no interest in taking responsibility for anybody elses posts, they will have to do that themselves

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think those images are 'ominous' in any shape or form. The fact that you are absolutely convinced they are makes me think you're a bit paranoid.
If you posted similar images after every post of mine it wouldn't bother me at all. It's just an image on my computer screen
for christ's sake.

oops (Oops), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

RGJ you are a colossal asshole. Since Oops doesn't mind it, and you have a compulsive need to post pictures, why don't you post them after *his* every post? Then everyone will be happy.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can confirm that RJG is a colossal asshole. I don't think he's very threatening though.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i never thought either of those things were up for debate.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

: )

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

can one of my fellow mods with access see about putting this into the faq:

though it makes me glad i dont read ile that often!! i always think its weird when ppl are all, oh ilm is terrible but ile is where its motherfuckin AT!! cuz whenever i look at ile its like, ok, five threads of twee bullshit, thread of really tired pop culture references to the smurfs or transformers or some shit, TEN THREADS WITH TEXTBOOK INTERNET ARGUING BULLSHIT, would-be 'hilariously absurdist' nonsense threads, etc etc etc... at least on ilm ppl use big words to insult each other
-- trife

k, thanx

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Colossal? RJG isn't that big, lady, you've got your mind in the gutter.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the sooner the better on my request above, obviously, though i don't think anyone actually reads the faq

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey do you live in Costa Mesa? Would you like to say this to my face?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think some people read. and that is the whole problem.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

putting it in the faq would make it prescriptive rather than descriptive.
request denied.

Do new questions no longer appear on the new answers page? I've been waiting ages for my New Order one to turn up and doing the first answer yourself is so 2001, darlings.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the list of threads in newanswers can't show any newly created threads as the threadid doesn't exist anywhere in the "newanswerscache" table. This table is usually recreated every 2 mins, but all the time shifting shenanigans means the server thinks it was most recently recreated tomorrow, which is sufficiently recent not to make it again.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Your NO thread is on fire Tom! (Well maybe not but AINYC and DP have contributed).

It wasn't a great thread or anything but I'm glad someone's showing the love!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I just started this thread too quickly, and should have had links to back it up but it was sort of an involuntary reaction and I didn't mean to upset people without having concrete evidence, so I would appreciate it if that thread could be deleted or have its name changed. Thanks.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Question mark added to thread title.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

mr noodles... because if a thread is started by a spammer/email miner, an inoccuous reply to something off topic still generates a valid email addy response to the creator of the thread.

if there was such an "email response" identifier on threads, i would be more eager to not include my real email address, esp. in the case of a non-regular starting a thread.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, here's the deal: Since I changed my e-mail address in my settings, my stats haven't been updating properly. I've posted like 250+ messages in the last 30 days, not 116. How do I fix this problem? Stats matter to me! :)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Every post ever now shows the same date for me, is this true for everyone? Have I missed a memo? Or are my settings/comp fucked?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Why'd I have to mess with a winning system?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

jel, I've been suffering that since I changed my email months ago. I haven't been too bothered, but I wouldn't mind seeing it fixed as the total is approaching the 10k mark.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Every post ever now shows the same date for me, is this true for everyone? Have I missed a memo? Or are my settings/comp fucked?

Try reseting your time settings and setting them back. You'll get some dinky error message, ignore it. It was mentioned on the "server upgrade" thread AFAIK.

gygax!, I'll look into it since Im going to messing around with things in that neighbourhood shortly. I'll see if we can't come up with a solution since the situtation has changed when Graham added the useful ability to subscribe to a question you didn't ask.

Martin & jel, no clue. But soon as I can get back at the database I wanna see what is and isn't going on with the user settings page and table. Unless Andrew has already fixed it.

TS ILX Axis vs ILX Allies. It could be a Momus gangs thread all over again.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be bad. Partly because I just don't want to disrupt ILE and re-open old wounds, and partly because I don't want to rattle or upset myself when otherwise things are going so well, and partly because I don't want to give other people the satisfaction of thinking that I still care, when really, honestly I haven't thought about it in ages when it's not in my face on ILE.

Really, I should just to be strong and ignore it and let the thread go away. It's not a Momus thread, BTW.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it the one I think it is Kate?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry, I'm doing my best to ignore it, though just be forewarned to keep an eye on it and smack me if I can't resist temptation, but I'm too busy cracking myself up over Nigel Spivey and the Richard Aiy Aiy Aiy fanclub anyway.
