...if we all agreed to just STOP QUOTING FUCKING FILM CRITICS ALL THE TIME.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:32 (twenty years ago)

take some responsibility for your own goddamn opinions for a change!!!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

and yeah yeah i've been as guilty of this as anyone but if i see one more "i agree with andrew sarris when he says that xXx is overrated and really it was all done better back when etc etc etc" post i'm gonna scream.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

sorry, it's been a bad day. carry on.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

two thumbs up

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

if i had my own opinions i'd take responsibility for them.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

it doesn't help that we've got two threads in a row with the word "cinema" in the title. THEY'RE JUST MOVIES PEOPLE! STOP PRETENDING THEY MATTER!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

j.d. was otm when he said "STOP QUOTING FUCKING FILM CRITICS ALL THE TIME." ;-)

jbr, Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Do I do this?

xp

I'm english and we say films or cinema, not movies. I can't help it!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

it is no longer 1956 and we can no longer pretend that any opinion we might conceivably have about movies is "original" or "revolutionary" or even "controversial"!!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

cinema is a nice word

gear (gear), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

this thread is "controversial"

gear (gear), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

distinctions between "movies" and "films" and "cinema" = dud dud DUD. s'all the same.

jbr, Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

"original" or "revolutionary" or even "controversial"!!

Do you think "movies" still have the power to be any of these things?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

i think when people go see movies they should say they're going to the cinematheque

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

ooooh, me too!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

i feel like ned flanders in that episode where he finally flipped and just walked around screaming at everyone in town.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

really? because to us this seems like just another meta-thread.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

not that this has much to do with this thread, but it's one of life's little ironies that people who rarely think for themselves are most often the ones to get angry when you quote or refer to someone else's opinions.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

can i quote you on that?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

let's not get bitchy.

can't ee simply accept that it's fun to be pretentious? Since I did, it's made my life a whole lot more fun.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

j.d., you know you're one of the smartest "film guys" here so i'm gonna assume you're just blowing off some steam and you'll come back to your senses. (i am pretty tired of critics though.)

jbr, Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm lazy, but prefer to cite others most only if they're making a singularly uncommon argument, or have a good joke.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

i believe it was Manny Farber who said he always aimed to first hook the reader, then make them laugh and finally convey whether he liked the film or not. Which is perhaps most crucial in our ILE film threads.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Do I do that?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

film threads on ilx, in general, make me want to kill things sometimes. it's the truth. i've learned to live with my anger.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

the weird thing is just this morning i was thinking how ile needed a manny farber thread!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

...if instead of quoting the critics, we quoted the beloved character actors from days of old- in particular William Demarest, in particular William Demarest in a Preston Sturges film, in particular William Demarest in The Lady Eve.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

"So long, Lulu, I'll send you a postcard"

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

it's positively the same dame!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Um, if you're that angry about it, maybe you're the one with the problem re: taking stuff too seriously.

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:34 (twenty years ago)

I saw Manny Farber at a post-screening talk about a year ago. Man, he's old.

Give me a spoonful of milk, a raw pigeon's egg, and four houseflies. If you can't catch any, I'll settle for a cockroach.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:35 (twenty years ago)

did you miss the part where i said "it's been a bad day"? yeah, i thought so. (x-post)

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Now I feel like the only one who actually enjoys ILX film threads.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:46 (twenty years ago)

What if the critics we're quoting are on ILX? or if they're ILXors who have film critic friends?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

No and no. With the one exception being sinkah, of course.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Although I guess you could be excepted too, Eric.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Hi.

I had no idea Manny Farber was still alive.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, me neither.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

????

I prolly read most of the film threads, and except for the ones specifically about critics, I don't see a lot of this. Of the weaknesses in ILE discourse, I wouldn't rank "Shyness about expressing personal opinions" very high. As James Agee said about Barbara Stanwyck, this strikes me as a tempest in a D-cup.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

2 columbus circle in 1964 (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I've been thinking lately about getting y-fronts. I've been thinking that they're so uncool, it's....you know, cool.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:12 (twenty years ago)

H&M have lime green ones with yellow piping.

best thread derail ever?

2 columbus circle in 1964 (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:13 (twenty years ago)

well I didn't think we needed ANOTHER underwear thread. But these are 100% bona-fide thoughts, from the inside of my head.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

"Vernon! I thought you said Herman!"

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Manny Farber... still alive.

This makes me so happy. I kind of imagine myself turning to painting when I get old. I'll have to pick up that '98 collection.

i figured this was another ban-dr-morbius thread

anticon jemima (ooo), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

J.D.'s apparently never written an essay or research paper.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

He doesn't believe in citing sources.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

I've never written a research paper for ILX either.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

soto blurb-a-blogging on ilx never rises to citing sources or expounding on others arguments, it's almost always done as an attempt at discussion ending esp when blogaholic morbs does it. if someone can post 'AND?' or 'SO?' after a blurbpost then that post was worthless.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

There is a bad punchline here, but what? I believe I must write the Laffy Taffy company to find out this five-minute mystery!

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

This thread coincided somewhat with the Crash thread getting really ugly, didn't it?

Is the fact that that line isn't even supposed to be funny what makes if funny? Cause I don't get it.

Eric H., Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

I still love this thread for just cutting through the bullshit and admitting that ILE film threads inevitably get intolerable or else they die.

Eric H., Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

it's funny coz

-he has to explain it
-doesn't really make sense
-'bunk' is ambiguous
-is untrue

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

ILE film threads make me really want to look at book threads instead

impudent harlot, Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

(x-post) People still try to explain what makes screwball funny to me, and that doesn't make it any more funny.

Eric H., Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad you like slapstick, or we'd have to have a Nerf-club fight.

(or that could be a reason TO have one)
