Let us give Shout outs to yer fave local bands...

including unsigned bands, bar bands, tribute bands and...hell..even knock-offs.
For the suburbs of Philly, I would like to nominate two quasi-industrial bands:
Carfax Abbey and
Tapping the Vein
and even, bless their hearts Paintbox, who fell out of a timewarp from 1991 and make some truly flashback-inducing retrogrunge for those feeling nostalgic for those days when Kurt Cobains head DIDN'T have a sunroof.

Oh, be sure to tell us where you are and what venues yer fave local band is likely to be seen. (In the off chance that other ILMers even end in your town and would like to see them.)

I ain't up in Brum anymore but shout out big time to Copter, for being punk-funk-blues and not being the Red Hot fucking Chilli Peppers but INSTEAD being well well good. They also run ColdRice, which drags some of the best small bands in the world to Brum to rock the place's limbs off. Copter rule.

Nice idea for a thread, I like this.

The Sadies, Toronto's finest country/surf/rock band/family, as seen at the Horseshoe. And the Deadly Snakes (as covered on other threads), at the Silver Dollar or the Gladstone. In the more obscure veins of Toronto, I kinda like the Brothers Cosmoline (folky country) at Grafitti's, the Atomic 7 (instrumental rock) at the Silver Dollar and the Inner City 4 (clashy punkrock) at Rancho Relaxo. I saw Wayne Omaha play part of a song once at the Horseshoe, and will keep my eyes open for them again. They seemed a bit FlamingLips-like.

From South Wales:

McLusky [see threads passim], The Martini Henry Rifles, Jarcrew, Suns Of Thunder, The Take and Midasuno are all doing it. Weird how rockist that list is, inasmuch as that never used to be the case round these parts.

Pleasing how many of the 'local' picks I actually recognise too. Atomic 7 album, very nice. Ditto Black Eyes.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 3 April 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Do we have local bands in London? All my fave bands seem to be from somewhere else...

Oh wait! My favourite local bands are the Stoke Newington Spacerock contingent... probably the best of whom would be Now who I am already forever going on about. Kraut-space-free-funk-folk-pop. Now = WOW!

kate, Thursday, 3 April 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

To Cardiff locale can I add Botanaphobia who I know someone in so it's not fair but they are just funny in their obstinance and they have great badges.

dave q, Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

From, uh, Central Virginia:

VHS and the Babies - who have no website, but are twee pop, but, y'know, good.

Order of the Dying Orchid - Blood Brothers-esque spazz-out punk. Fantastic live and super guys.

A New Dawn Fades - Whose name sounds like a shitty emo band, but really they are an instrumental guitar/drums duo that are kind of metally but also experimental.

and

Times Ten - Awesome super loud garage pop with female vocals, courtesy of an ILE regular.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Order of the Dying Orchid more generally referred to as Orchid, or am I getting my screamo arse-backwards?

Kinda hard at the moment because of that mf-in' "New York sound" that exploded in the past year-and-a-half -- made "local" NYC bands not-so-local anymore. But here are two alive and excellent (as opposed to defunct) local bands:
Bantam www.bantamnyc.com
Opti-Grab www.opti-grab.com

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Mencap, I think they might be different bands.

There are a bunch of new bands I've heard about but haven't seen yet. Becoming a parent will do that to you.

Lee G (Lee G), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim - at the moment MStD are on a hiatus as the bass player is doing a degree. From what I've heard the three other members have formed a side project called "The Hats". I've not heard it yet, but I'm sure it'll be ace. I went to school with the two guitarists (I sort of taught them to play - PRIDE! PRIDE! I LOVE THOSE GUYS!) and Chris used to play bass for me back in my long hair angsty days.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of my favorite Lexington, KY bands have broken up over the past few months (Astrolyte, a psych-rock-hip-hop-jam-band, friends of mine too; Channel Z-row, a dub-reggae-tweak-metal-oid thing; Innervision Collision, a big funk-rock-jazz sextet). Our scene actually has at least 3 sub-scenes that don't do much cross-pollination: there's a thriving XXX/vegan punk scene, a radio-oid hardrock scene, and a hippie jam band scene. Then there's a bunch of stuff that falls in between.

One of my favorite Lexington groups is called Spacecraft, they're like ambient-organic-electro stuff, they're excellent; they play at Planetariums and shit. They were in the Vanilla Sky score; the scene right after the accident, where he's dreaming he's in the park and there's leaves falling and stuff...that's them.

Another KY favs of mine: VHS or Beta, this electro-disco band that just rawks the live show. Their music is rather spectacular.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee, I'm guessing yr in Baltimore. Have you seen the Slow Jets? I've opened for them before and they were great. Poppy but not twee.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Woohoo Drive-By Truckers! Yay the Glands! Rock On Circulatory System! Roll On Vic Chesnutt!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I now live about 40 minutes south of Lexington, Kentucky. The only local band that I really like is South 75, which has a sound somewhere between Skynnrd and the Circle Jerks. I think they rock, but I get the idea that there are proabably more people that don't like them as do, they just don't fit with most of the bands in this area.

I've never seen Nickalicious' band, but sometime I plan to check them out one of these days.

There was/is always alot of good bands and music in Bloomington, Indiana. It is a shame some of the bands that were going in the early 90s didn't really get to make anything above tapes or a 7".

earlnash, Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

We played a show with South 75 last Friday. The sound at the place we played was shite, but they were tiggity-TIGHT!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you playing with them Friday at Hooligans?

earlnash, Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Portland bands that I'm not friends with: Thanksgiving. Blanket Music. The Decembrists. Bronwyn (OK I'm friends with them but they're grrrreat and they cover one of my songs so how can you not love that?).

(There are undoubtedly more.)

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

We were supposed to play this Friday, but we switched places with another group 'cause they couldn't do it on the 18th. I'll probably come down to see the show though, I like them as well as this hip-hop group that's playing that night called Medula Oblongata.

We're the Friday after next (the 18th) with Lucid Grey (my homies!, they rock), Circle Four (good dudes, catchy tunes), and, uh, um...(thinking)...oh yeah, these kids called Otmen (they're actually quite killer for being such young dudes).

Do you go to Hooligans much? I friggin love that place.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Every once in awhile I go to Hooligans, it is pretty much the only place that has original bands around these parts.

Personally, I like going to see South 75 at the Bear & Bull. The beer is cheap and the surroundings are usually interesting.

earlnash, Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick A.: Yes, I neglected to mention that I'm a Baltimoron. I love the Jets and they're good guys too, but they didn't pop into my head for the first rank. Now Roads to Space Travel--the band that once included Tim and Greg from the Jets and Roman from Oranges--they would have made it standing up, if they were still around.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

These threads never seem to do too well because it's rare that people go in-depth about the people in the scene, what it's like to be a rock band in a small town, so everyone just rattles off their lists. I remember someone linking to this Charlotte Pressler article awhile back. Anyhow here are some other threads on local acts:

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I am reviving this thread partially because it has Tracer's links to the 800 other threads on this topic and partially to talk about the fantasticness of Certainly, Sir and Tristan de Cunha. I discovered Certainly, Sir at The Middle East one evening pretty much at random; I don't remember who the headliner was (I don't think it was the Clientele show because I remember skipping the opening acts in favor of drinking with lovely British people) but I do remember being deeply impressed with Certainly, Sir. The best combination of underground sensibilities and tasty pop craftmanship I've come across in ages. On the complete opposite side, Tristan de Cunha are angularly aggressive math-rock; my distillation of the 35 minute set they did last night at O'Brien's is "The Minutemen covering Rush, only really, really pissed off". The thing about them that I find particularly great is that their bass player and lead singer is a colleague of mine from my pro church choir gig who also does rounds on the local classical circuit as a bass/baritone soloist. Naturally this is going to endear them to me!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Then I will reiterate my love for some of the L.A. locals I mentioned on at least one of those other threads:

even though i am a curmudgeon stick in the mud who enjoys having unshaven people from Sweden yell at him all day, i really like this crickets song "foreign hands". it's so giddy! crickets are brother/sister. actually, they are my doctor's children.

http://www.myspace.com/cricketsmusic

brother has a current band that i think is cool too. again, atypical of what i would dig for the most part, but they've got pep! they have a new album coming out too. "cold day" is my fave.

anyway, they are as local yokel as you get. even though brother and sister live elsewhere for now.

one year passes...

I've got a couple for you. There's an interesting little scene forming around these two Vancouver bands who are both 17-18 years old, both are female-fronted indie-pop bands who mostly play all-ages shows which (speaking as a very old guy) I identify as the epitome of teenage rock'n'roll good times as mythologised by Jonathan Richman - free backyard/beach/basement parties with a few dozen kids dancing around and the bands bringing the fun in spades. Neither band has made any "professional" recordings yet. The recordings that they have made thus far only hint at the potential that I think is obvious from their live shows. Don't click if you dislike girlie pop music!

Kidnap Kids are quite reminiscent of Twa Toots or Trixie's Big Red Motorbike.
Thee Ahs are kinda like Heavenly or Girls at Our Best.
