is Pixies Doolitle too much for an eight year-old in an ultra-republican household (new jersey)

i also got (for christmas) deerhoof apple o and dj shadow's entroducing, figuring they are safe. these three albums are gifts for three kids, aged 11, 12, and 6. i'm just worried about the parents' reaction.

Russignon, Thursday, 23 December 2004 04:18 (twenty years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 23 December 2004 04:23 (twenty years ago)

rss, Thursday, 23 December 2004 04:27 (twenty years ago)

no, i already sent the discs. i was wondering if i should email their mom, and let her know about the primal-ness of doolittle. or just let it go

rssgnon, Thursday, 23 December 2004 04:29 (twenty years ago)

i think you done good. done real good. in the spirit of jesus.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Thursday, 23 December 2004 04:47 (twenty years ago)

"This monkey's gone to heaven!"

Pixies are good christian rock band. I can't see where you can go wrong.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 23 December 2004 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Mind you, I was listening to "Jesus Loves Amerika" by the Shamen as a kid and played it in the car with my very Christian Republican family, and they never noticed, because they thought all that type of music was just noise, and could't (care to) discern the words anyway.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 23 December 2004 04:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm giving a friend of mine's daughter (who is 4 years old) a copy of this Joanna Newsom disc. Not so much because I'm much a fan of Newsom's (more lukewarm), but rather that I'm curious about how a four year old would react to the music.

Nirav Soni, Thursday, 23 December 2004 05:14 (twenty years ago)

Here are the only two phrases from Doolittle that will be of interest to the parents of an EIGHT YEAR OLD:

"Some marijuana if you got some"
"Kill us all with holy fingers."

I fear you have made a bad decision.

nabiscothingy (nory), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:08 (twenty years ago)

Also, the parents might be worried about their child's new, misplaced interest in Un Chien Andalou. Also; whores.

C0L1N B, Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:16 (twenty years ago)

yea maybe my cousins would like a pixies' cd

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 December 2004 07:45 (twenty years ago)

Dude, my mom tried to make me send Doolittle back to BMG when I was, well, somewhat older than eight, I'll tell you that.

nabiscothing (nory), Thursday, 23 December 2004 07:51 (twenty years ago)

My mom likes the Pixies. She took my cousin and I to see them and U2 in '92.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 23 December 2004 07:58 (twenty years ago)

Just play them Stairway To Heaven on vinyl backwards at 45 RPM. The Christians should love that!

Bimble..., Thursday, 23 December 2004 08:04 (twenty years ago)

haha yeah btw has anyone seen that 80's Praise the Lord where the entire show was them playing metal records backwards? They show it late night on xtian channels sometimes. awesome.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 23 December 2004 08:08 (twenty years ago)

i would've hated this shit when i was 8!!!!!

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 23 December 2004 11:18 (twenty years ago)

When I was 8 I liked "Appetite For Destruction", "He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper" and "Little Deuce Coupe". Little kids are weird, there's really no way of knowing in advance...

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Thursday, 23 December 2004 11:23 (twenty years ago)

When I was 8, my favorite albums were the West Side Story original broadway cast soundtrack, Rush's _A Farewell To Kings_, Pink Floyd's _The Wall_, Prince's _Controversy_ and a random Sesame Street album (maybe _C is for Cookie_?).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

But Christians are so much against r'n'r in the US?
I remember that, when I was 9 or 10, my mum (who was a deeply religious person) gave me a tape called "Fonz favourites", with lots of 50's hits, and she always encouraged my interest in music. Btw, from that tape I really really loved (and still do) Freddy Cannon's Tallahassee Lassie.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Not so much against R&R as much as against giving eight-year-olds music that explicitly curses and talks about using drugs in non-veiled terms.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago)

this is akin to a husband who buys his wife a drill.

Not so much against R&R as much as against giving eight-year-olds music that explicitly curses and talks about using drugs in non-veiled terms.

Well, frankly I can see their point... :)

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:00 (twenty years ago)

My friends' parents are super crazy conservative Christians... I remember he told me that something about Doolittle specifically made his mom cry when he was in high school.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Man I'm amazed that it took this long for someone to point out the location of the tattoo that says "number 13."

Fer chrissakes!

On the other hand it's highly unlikely that the kids (or their parents) will figure out what "Here Comes Your Man" is acutally about...

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Ha. Emphasised words in the previous post were not an intentional Pixies reference.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I think the kids will be inclined to think you have really strange and stupid tastes. The parents will only get mad if they're discerning of the Pixues' lyrics. But really, what were you thinking?!? Maybe you should've asked the kids what they liked and got them something along those lines - instead of trying to be "cool" and pushing your own tastes on them.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

(and for the record I'm not saying these records are bad - well, the DJ Shadow record is kinda lame, but I do own a copy, and Deerhoof and the Pixies I like a lot)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:33 (twenty years ago)

alright, i'm gonna abort the doolittle. i picked dj shadow because i thought it would be an easy introduction to beat-oriented stuff. i'm not pushing my taste on them. i simply thought the music would be something they wouldn't be exposed to otherwise. think i'm gonna substitute tortoise standards for doolittle. how's that?

russignon, Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:40 (twenty years ago)

'Cause if there's one things eight-year-olds LOVE, it's noodly post-rock.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Give them the re-issued _Three Imaginary Boys_! (Watch the uproar when the parents hear "Object" and "Subway Song"!)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Actually, you should give the kid a Labradford CD.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:44 (twenty years ago)

'Cause if there's one things eight-year-olds LOVE, it's noodly post-rock.

i think it's (standards) at least punchy, bouncy, and novel.

rssl, Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

i feel sick about this whole thing

rssgnon, Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

If I ever have a kid I'm making him listen to "post-rock/experimental" and nothin' but! His name will also be Maverick.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

If its a girl her name will be Anastasia and she'll only get to listen to Joanna Newsom and Celine Dion.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Is Anthony trying to tell us his name is actually MAVERICK MICCIO???

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Russ, I like Standards and the kids might find it interesting, but I just can't imagine it's something they'd want to listen to over and over. Maybe I'm wrong, though. At least the Pixies idea had the fun-to-shout-along-with factor.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago)

We'll call him "Rick" for short, but his birth certificate will read "Maverick," yes.

Wait, fuck all that. THREE COPIES OF METAL MACHINE MUSIC.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 00:30 (twenty years ago)

i picked dj shadow because i thought it would be an easy introduction to beat-oriented stuff.

by giving them an album packed to the gills with beats? TMBG is the best suggestion here, easy.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 December 2004 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, for the 6 year old get "No!"
11 yr old gets "Flood"
12 yr old gets "Lincoln"

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 00:55 (twenty years ago)

the parents are/are not going to object on the basis of sound and attitude long before content, i imagine. i fear you made rather poor choices on those fronts. but perhaps sound and attitude matter more to you than content.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 December 2004 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, for the 6 year old get "No!"
11 yr old gets "Flood"
12 yr old gets "Lincoln"

Lincoln is the best overall IMO

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 01:14 (twenty years ago)

maybe some cibo matto? something by the beatles? jackson 5?

6335, Friday, 24 December 2004 05:28 (twenty years ago)

i don't know. i might have to listen to TMBG. what are pizzicato five like? stereolab dots and loops?

rssgnld, Friday, 24 December 2004 05:41 (twenty years ago)

I was into Richard Thompson at 10, because I know I got the Watching The Dark collection when it came out with birthday money, and that was in 1993, when I was 10. Suzanne Vega came later, then, so at 8 I must have been into Dire Straits, maybe Pat Metheny Group.. I was over Kolinda and Kalamijka by that point, but maybe still Copeland's 'Appalachian Springs', and definitely Paul Simon. Oh, and so much Steely Dan. I listened to what my parents had around; we only listened to the CBC, so I was in a total vacuum away from pop radio until about 1996, when I started high school.

If I'd gotten Doolittle or Standards at 8, I would have been confused and ignorant, but 6 years later I would have dug it up out of curiosity, and it would have blown me away. This is not a game of quick returns.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 24 December 2004 07:41 (twenty years ago)

There's no way preteens are going to be into the albums you got for them. There's no way a 12-year-old has the patience to sit through Tortoise. I mean, part of the joy of being a music listener is that your tastes grow as you become exposed to more music and more types of music. You need a little growth, however, before you jump into more sophisticated listening. You can't just throw Tortoise at kids.

All the kids that I know that are the age you are buying for like stuff that is ultra-catchy or funny. They like stuff they hear on the radio. They like stuff that their classmates are listening to. Whenever kids this age come into the music store I work at, they are typically accompanied by their parents. To be honest, most of the parents take a real interest in what their kids are buying. Often they will ask me about the music their child wants to buy: is this album any good? Is their swearing on this album? Is this album appropriate for my child's age group. A fair number ask to hear the album before they buy it. While your desire to expose your cousins to some really cool bands is noble, I just don't think you thought about this enough.

grapeshine (grapeshine), Friday, 24 December 2004 08:29 (twenty years ago)

I think it's cool in a hope-chest sense, y'know, but they won't get it now. I ended up with Morrissey's Southpaw Grammar when I was 14 or 15: "what the hell is this? who is Morrissey? is that the band's name? Does this first song ever end? whatever!". Two years back, though, I found it in a pile and loved it. It's all about planting seeds, not instant gratification.

Maybe they'd like Soul Coughing's first album?

derrick (derrick), Friday, 24 December 2004 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Well, I've thought about it, and decided the new jersey is probably a better idea.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 December 2004 10:12 (twenty years ago)

What, exactly the fuck, would be "ridiculous" about that? Except if the word "ridiculous" can be defined as "awesome to the point of being more awesomer than infinity times awesome with french vanilla whipped cream on top and some hot fudge on it".
