A Prayer For Owen Meany vs. Catch 22

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh there are so many though! where to begin? Hmmm, I will have to think of a good one that I remember.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I was mostly thinking current threads, rather than digging through the archives. So that ILBers who wanted a little more book talk wouldn't have to worry about all of ILE's random threads and could have a handy guide to the bookish threads all in one place.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Carson McCullers

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a good idea, Chris. I actually thought of doing something similar a while back. There are definitely some good lit discussions on ILE.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love for people to add to this, but i don't know how many fans of his are on ILB who haven't contributed already. Probably not many. (Not that ILBers aren't savvy to good writing, that's hardly the case, but I wonder how far his books travel outside the U.S. - aside from his poetry, which he is mostly know for.)

Haruki Murakami
Books on Mormonism
What's your favourite tree?

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The last one because it's such a lovely quiet thread for Friday

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone enjoy the mccullers?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, well it made me realise that she's one of the few authors whose books I want to *own*, and at the moment I don't :(

Will be a definite revisiting at the library tomorrow though.

A Prayer For Owen Meany vs. Catch 22

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 27 June 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

hi chris!!

I remember this amazing thread about ronald firbank from about a month ago...terrifyingly obscure!

erik, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Erik! That was a good thread, although I still haven't picked up any Firbank. Stick around, ILB is pleasant!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the link to Carson McCullers and was surprised to discover I started it. I have no recollection of it.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

There is currently nothing on ILE worth reading. I sometimes forget how good ILB is until I compare it to ILE.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There's actually a number of good threads there -- the political discussions these days can be quite good, if low key in comparison, and there are others. The idiocies on many threads, however, have not gone unnoticed by the mods, and various approaches are being considered.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, what can you do? ILE has periods where it dips and you just have to ride with it.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I've just read through the discussion on the mod board. I think ILB should be outside any new process (if it comes to fruition), but it's Scott's shout ultimately.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned's on ILB! Ned's on ILB!! Alert the media! I have a witness. Mikey, you saw him. (You are safe here, Ned. We won't tell anyone that you are here if you ever need respite from the chaos and turmoil of ILE.)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned found out that I was #1 on the user list and, ever since being deposed from ILE's #1 spot, decided to be a big fish in a smaller pond.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

my, I'm 2nd on the user's list. go ned!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right underneath me.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

go ned!

cºzen (Cozen), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

ever since being deposed from ILE's #1 spot

You really must stop smoking all that sweet, sweet crack.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Here are all the literature threads on ILE:

(Apart form my thread on jim thompson, which I did not categorize under literature)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone else find the rapidity with which people are adopting this place - using terms like "ILBers" ferchrissakes - actually quite creepy and counterproductive?

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What are we supposed to be producing?

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I keep asking the girls...

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ancient Greek Tragedies: Search/Destroy
I was thinking about starting this, but that Dirty Vicar beat me to it.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 1 July 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, obviously I was talking about the 30 days list. Sheesh.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, dear boy. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
There's a night out in London Town, Thursday (tomorrow) night. I expect full attendance from ILB posters. 'I live in Kansas' is not an excuse.

It would be good if some of you could make it.

Club Freaky Trigger THURSDAY 29th July

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mank. I can't go to this, I have to, er, fight crime. Yeah, that's right, with my secret identity.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 29 July 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Webcomics: S/D
I wanted to post it on ILB as it's the only forum I'm a regular on, but it would have been out of context, so I would love it if you all will post your fav webcomics there :-)

Fred (Fred), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't go, neither.

Next ILB meet up = ?

the bellefox, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My place on Tuesday.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, we need a bookish gathering.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 3 October 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

I haven't clicked on that Gilbert Sorrentino thread in a while. Is it still the case that it is only myself and- in his only non-I-Love-Film post ever, a spectator bird- that like old Gil?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 3 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

If I couldn't stand Mulligan Stew and thought the Orangery was OK but not riveting, is there something I should consider reading, even though admittedly I will probably never get around to it?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 3 October 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid I can't help you, Chris.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 3 October 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Although most ILBers will have spotted this one, I will direct the attention of those who have not to A thread where you commission a poem from ILE.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 1 December 2005 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

I might be picking a fight here: Philip Larkin - "What will survive of us is love" or "Books are a load of crap"?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 12 December 2005 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

four months pass...
Now in its infancy, but already promising to grow up to be a cute kid and a hellacious adolescent: A thread for making a linked poem
