YOU REMIND ME OF MY JEEEEEEEEEP

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been making CD-R's of songs from CD's I'm getting rid of for a while now and I'm listening a CD that combines the best of 2 R. Kelly albums (R. Kelly and TP-2.com) with two songs by Knife In The Water and Nearly God's "Poems."

R. Kelly just told me he's going down on you by the fireplace.

And in the liner notes he'd like to give a shout out to all Black colleges. When he comes your way, reach out to him!

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 16 July 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

some LPs arrived yesterday so:

Morton subtonick 'wild bull'- haven't explored synthesizer only compostion much but this is triffic; wide range of sounds and frequencies are played with.

'clyma est mort' 2nd side, another great record from them, the last track is one of the more improv-ish things I've heard from them.

rudolph grey 'transfixed'- the blue humans guitarist 'legend' in bonkers duo with arthur doyle and summer crane, as well as some multitracked bollocks in the studio.

'CHRISTOPHER HOBBS/JOHN ADAMS/GAVIN BRYARS' Ensemble Pieces (Obscure) LP: 2nd Obscure release, produced by eno, the island label going 'avant' in the mid-70s.

good for you, jel. casiotone is the best. i listened to twinkle echo, the last record, today. also, i listened to paint a vulgur picture five or six times in a row as i've been doing for the past few weeks.

Casiotone's good? Goddammit, they/he/she/it just played here.

Ronan's bid on the Satellite of Love house remix being the song of the summer has been independently confirmed by multiple sources. I can't NOT be listening to it, which isn't bothering me at all. The beats are soooo pedestrian but it's almost better that way: you can just kind of zone them out. Also "Move Your Body Girl" by Nina Sky, "Kill Bloodclot Bill" by Kardinal Offishall, and er "Sunshine on Leith"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 17 July 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 17 July 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to go out and buy William Parker's Scrapbook and maybe one of those Gilles Peterson British jazz compilations, if I can find one, but I woke up much earlier than I wanted to, and now I'm going through a ready-for-a-nap backlash to having awoken too early. If I take a nap, I could just end up staying inside for the rest of the day, but that would be okay.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Saturday, 17 July 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

BERIO 'Coro'- Berio uses folk-ish procedures (something like that): fuck knows bcz its a blast (but no bombast). great great piece from '76.

BERIO Circles BUSSOTTI Frammento CAGE Aria With Fontana Mix- Cathy Berberian on vocals, the realization of 'fontana mix' involves cage-ian tapes going crazy and berberian is up to it, the reast is so-so.

finally 3 Lps worth of messiaen organ works.

Maybe I just haven't heard the right stuff, but there is something I can't put my finger on that really bothers me about the sound of Ray Barretto's salsa recordings. Angel Canales to the rescue.

Every time I listen to her album I like it a little bit more. I want to make out with her so bad. With my mouth.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit that when I first heard the album I was in a kind of lonely state where I was more than happy to hear a funny, weird, smart girl talk for two hours.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, I'm always in that kind of state. It was just a little more desparate than usual at the time.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

plus she says "Miccio, you give meaning to every day" near the beginning of "It's A Pose." It's because she loves my blog.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I can't help but rewind and listen to that line a bunch of times when I play the CD.

further circumstantial proof that Nellie McKay is talking about me:

1) Supposedly she's an insomniac who spends her nights roaming the internet.

2) when I started my blog I was writing in a tighter Review Of The Day format (that's why the rockcritics.com links page refers to the site as Mr. Miccio Does The Daily Deed).

3) the writing was (perhaps, is) mediocre enough to deserve a pun about giving meaning to everyday.

3) she bitches about hearing another story about AC/DC, who are my favorite band. This would be damning evidence if she specifically mentioned Bon Scott-era AC/DC.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

What's that FF remix like?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to listen to Squarepusher, but there's this weird droning buzz/static coming from my pyooter speakers, which is oddly fitting.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

cardew 'treatise' CD2, plenty of buzz and static on this one.

What's that FF remix like?

It's actually not very different from the original, just some squelches that beef up the bottom end. basically the pitchfork review except that I love it.

Sweet, velveteen Bingo! That rocks!

Lauren, it was only "Cold Hard Bitch." I refuse to apologize for liking the song that most sounds like Bon Scott-era AC/DC we've had in ages (their ballads are total shit though).

Last night I had a dream where I was playing on an amateur football league with a bunch of assholes who stopped a play because someone had handed the QB "the new Wilco song" and they all wanted to listen. I got pissed off and jumped on a fence screaming that they were all a bunch of cocks. The QB then ran after me and I woke up just as he was about to kick my ass. So I'm listening to Summerteeth.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a shame recording technology wasn't just a little bit better in the 40's, when Oum Kalthoum was probably at her peak in terms of sheer voice power. There is just no way the microphone can handle what she is doing. Not that it's not enjoyable, but it begs for a high fidelity recording.

Hey Nick, I wanted to ask you, seeing as how you're an indie rock dude in Chicago: do you know/know of Inspector Owl? We played a show with them last night and good golly miss molly I loved them. I'm a sucker for indie rock bands with ridiculously good drummers.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, ditto exactly what nickalicious just said but insert Voltage for the band.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Btw Nickalish, how long have you been letting me languish alone in my Fahrenheit Fair Enough fandom? I shall punish you with this absolutely wretched paragraph from Pfork:

Kicking off with the title track, Cooper and Eustis perform their deft impersonation of the lulling, tastefully echoed tones of the Album Leaf. An electronic piano makes deliberated, pseudo-profound statements before the Warp-descended posse of percussion squiggles, bips, blips, and blops take up their squirmy position by the e-piano. These opposites never attract. Though a steady backbeat keeps both time and order, Cooper and Eustis are forced into using a calliope-like sound to bring any beauty to this ill-conceived pairing.

From what I've heard (trusted friends & sound clips), the follow-up to FFE is ass. All crappy neo-soul vocals and chamber orchestras instead of wonderful melodies and hot beats.

Ellery Eskelin/Andrea Parkins/Jim Black - The Secret Museum
Tammy St John - "Dark Shadows And Empty Hallways"/Doctor Father (a.k.a. Godley & Creme circa 1970) - "Umbopo" (both off the Songs For Mario's Cafe comp)

Mobb Deep - The Infamous
M Ward - Transfiguration Of Vincent (in preparation for gig tomorrow)

I am stuck in a library for the next 5 and a half hours (been here two and a half already) with no music.

This thread hurts me. I can sneak little peeks at videos on launch.com, but what I really want to do is curl up with my CD player, put in the GVSB, RFTC, Giant Sand, GBV and Sebadoh CD-Rs I made and set it on random.

sigh...

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The mix is AWESOME, Velveteen Bingo! I'm DJing an indie night at a local bar tomorrow night and will likely be incorporating stuff like "Rump Shaker," "Do Me," "Rub You The Right Way," and without a doubt "Iesha" to the mix. And if anybody decides to come back to my pad afterwards, I'll make sure to throw on disc two. Oh baby.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually spent a good part of today listening to a CD-R my little sister sent me from Scotland a few months ago when she was up there. The glory of this thing only became clear today. It's got a crazy mix of stuff on it: Elliott Smith covering "Jealous Guy", TV On The Radio (who are really growing on me), Alex Chilton (a great track from his late period called "Oogum Boogum"), Usher's "You Make Me Wanna", "Youth Of A Nation", Korn's "Adidas," Gillian Welch, Wrathchild, System Of A Down, Matmos, Fantomas, Allister, Azure Ray remixed by the Postal Service, Danzig and some other stuff. I can't believe how cool her taste is.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to try to burn some of that Shiina Ringo stuff to CD when I can. By the way, do you have a new CD out? I saw a review in The Wire.

hey sundar. yeah I'm deep into shiina obsession mode by this point. that's the fourth and best album, the 2nd 'shoso strip' is a grower though...

the review was for a 12", but it's all old stuff. most of my energy is still just going into live shows... your CD's out now, right?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Omar Bashir/Sahar Taha: Baghdadiyat. I resonate sympathetically so much more to Arabic rhythms than to the rhythms of straightahead jazz. (I was listening to a bit of that earlier.) These rhythms just keep rolling. Haha, that sounds like some sort of trucker music concept, but anyway. "The political context has shifted" (says the Guardian). This track is quiet though. There was some Arabic music, oud and a male singer, on "Democracy Now!" tonight but they didn't announce who it was, as they often do. (Maybe I should right an outraged letter: "Why do you announce American artists, but treat Arab artists as mere anonymous ciphers? Is this the attitude of "Democracy Now!"?!)

Today I listened to assorted mp3s. I was specifically looking to see if I still had Don't Touch My Bikini by the Halo Benders, and I did, but thanks to random play, after it I ended up listening to most of a Mandy Moore song followed up by Talk Talk's New Grass. Not the smoothest transition ever. Then it was the ambient channel on cable, then the Delays cd again, then Boards of Canada, Geogaddi. Saw that Bjork thing just now too.

The Wagnerian hyperdrama that is Depeche's "Enjoy the Silence" CD single from 1990. The second instrumental B-side in particular is grandiose insanity (and oh do I love it).

What's Chicago II like?

A bad Blood, Sweat and Tears impression, with music that inspired 20 years of "Action News" theme songs. Horns! and Soulful White Guys! and even the occasional Ballad! It's pretty terrible, really. Except when it's not.

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this good Barima? I've stared at it a couple of times in the store.

I like it a bit, though the two Waves have been distracting me. Fave stuff: Lopazz - Take Me Home, DJ T - Electrofied, the Chelonis R. Jones tracks (Ronan otm) and the mixes from Tiefschwarz and Captain Comatose. It's better than the Classic Records Seven Magazine mix and almost good as the Ryan Shaw/Tom Middleton DJ Mag mix - I love cheap promo bins. I'd recommend it if you've been digging on Get Physical so far (I haven't, but I bought it due to the decent M.A.N.D.Y. track on Tiga's DJ Kicks and Tiefschwarz's general on fire present state). I'll let you know if it grows on me more. Meanwhile:

International Pony - We Love Music
Grand Popo Footbal Club - Shampoo Victims
Timbaland and Magoo - Welcome To Our World
Artful Dodger Presents Rewind mix CDs (oh, to be 18 in 2000 again)
I'm also hooked on the double-kiss of 'One Touch' and 'Lush Life' on the first Sugababes record.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've decided to spend the afternoon listening to recently purchased CDs that I don't like. I got through most of a couple really boring, sweet, heavy-on-the-orchestra, Fairouz CDs, and now I'm listening to Mephista (which is a trio that plays kinda modern classical stuff, free improv maybe though I'm not sure). I do like some of the sounds, but the apparent disjointedness is too much for me. It's very modern classical and difficult. (sundar likes it. I'm still waiting for his comments.)

RS: It's just hard for me to articulate. I'm still digesting it. I guess, partly, it's that it doesn't feel disjointed for me. . . the feeling of 'place' - in the sense that each snippet seems to somehow evoke a specific mood and location and there's an effective sense of travelling between them or something? Just the way that they're all players I love and they seem to connect well - the sense of flow and dynamics? The way that Mori's electronics can sound kind of evil sometimes or delicate at others? The pictures of Susie Ibarra (j/k)?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Took me ages to find it when I went to see Bailey/Prevost. Plus I had to go and find a cash dispenser and I asked the barman in the gallery where the nearest one was and he said, "Leave it aht, this is 'ackney". Well he didn't really say it like that, he was Welsh. It was more, "Look you, 'tis Hackney, see?"

I've gotten to like this a lot. I'm sorry that it doesn't seem to have attracted much attention (though it made one of Chuck Eddy's ILM lists of things he liked alright from 2003, so I guess that's some press).

I guess it's target audience would be the usual suspects for a.g. jazz, but about half of it is more free-form Americana than jazz; which may not sound like a good thing, but it is in this case.

I bought four Arabic CDs to donate to the library where I work: Oum Kalthoum Roubaiyat el Khayam, Nazem AlGhazali Vol. 1, Fairouz Safarbarlek/Bint el-Harass, and Marcel Khalife's Caress. I am listening to some of them and trying to imagine how people unfamiliar with this stuff might respond to them (or I'm doing that at least some of the time). These things won't actually make it into the collection for at least another year, I would guess (assuming they do make it into the collection, and aren't stolen at some point during processing).

(If I donate four more they will probably be another Oum Kalthoum (most likely Ana fe Entezarak), maybe Marcel Khalife's At the Border, some early Abdel Wahab that I don't even own myself yet, something by Farid el Atrache (though it's hard to find one CD that is really good all the way through), and maybe some Wadi al Safi.)

Justo Bentacourt: Pa Bravo Yo

I still don't love this or anything, but it's okay. I think it's working pretty hard at approximating a Cuban sound (although most if not all those involved were not Cuban), which may explain my lukewarm reaction to it (given my meh response to most Cuban music). The title track is probably my favorite, followed by the boleros. But his voice and his singing don't really impress me all that much.

I don't know why I use this thread to post detailed comments on music that virtually no one here listens to.

jp ryan (kephm), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's pretty wild. I prefer the more hectic stuff near the beginning of the cd, esp. "The House That Faded Out," but it's all pretty interesting. Lots of imaginative use of keyboards and weird vocals.

n.a. (Nick A.), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Very cool you like that, NA. It's good stuff. :-)

As for me, the new "Enjoy the Silence" single from the fourth Depeche single box set, now including the ridiculously wonderful Tim Simenon/Holger Hiller/Gareth Jones/Adrian Sherwood "The Quad" remix. This is possibly the greatest hour of recorded music anywhere (that isn't Loveless).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got Ned's Disco Inferno CD in the mail (I'm hoping the Blue Orchids will show up tomorrow). So far it's pretty cool!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 23 August 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

A Phish show from 1994 I just downloaded. I'm still giving these guys a chance.

That's kinda the trick. I would stick to live material from like 93-97.

Aargh, do they have to sing?

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha OTM

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 23 August 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I was listening to my own recordings. It all went wrong when my lovely old Fostex conked out and I got a super new Tascam, except the Tascam is too hi-tech for me.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

So far it's pretty cool!

:-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha jel I sometimes wish I'd hung on to Grave Dancers' Union. What Tascam do you use? The 424 mk III has a special place in my heart.

Meredith Monk - Mercy (Yes, this is ranking higher than Dolmen Music for me right now.)
A Wilco show from May 20. I never heard these guys before now but I really like them so far. Kind of a Velvets/Stones (Beggars' Banquet-era?) mix with lots of guitar noise.
Rush - "The Pass", "Roll the Bones"
James 'Blood' Ulmer - Memphis Blood (Fuck yeah.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 23 August 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a Portastudio 414 mkII Sundar, it has too many buttons, and I can't remember how to bounce! I will have to read the instructions again, I like things to be intuitive (ie esay!). Yeah, Soul Asylum were great "Somebody to Shove" is brilliant!

Today:

James Kochalka Superstar - Monkey vs Robot
Soul Asylum
Ladybug Transistor
Mates of State

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

due to the middle school angst I associate with "Somebody To Shove," I can't hear the song without imagining Brian Krakow running through a field crying. It is indeed a great song.

I've been listening to the Mountain Goats' We Shall All Be Healed and Interpol's Turn On The Bright Lights today.

Mario Winans - Hurt No More
Ghostface - The Pretty Toney Album
R. Kelly - Happy People/U Saved Me
the Blue Orchids CD Lauren sent me that showed in my mailbox today

I must confess Mr. Kelly is the front-runner.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

a bunch of old stuff because it feels like 1988 (in my opinion a crap year of hair metal bands).

The ever ubiqitous my friends laugh at me Charlatans banana album
Blondie - Plastic Letters
US Bombs - 1st EP and Garibaldi Guard

sundar, since you seem to be on this thread a lot, here's a couple CDs I recently saw reviewed that I think would interest you:

Sten Hostfalt [missing umlauts sp?]: 29 Pieces for the Microtonal Guitar Live at Knitting Factory New York

Hugh Ragin: Revelation (And actually this whole Francis Davis article is pretty interesting.) The other musicians are: William Parker, Hamid Drake, and Assif Tsahar.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 26 August 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to Hector Lavoe: The Fania "Legends of Salsa" Collection--Volume 1. Anyone remotely interested should hear these songs. Right now it's "Sonando Despierto."

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 26 August 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do I even bother trying to keep current when the best recordings are mostly from the past? I realize that these are fuzzy terms, but I know what I mean.

It's very very good. ;-) More seriously, I'd have to give it another listen to comment accurately, it's been a while, but it felt like PT didn't change for the worse when it made the leap to the majors.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like Opeth!! hahahaha! Well, kinda, actually. Or at least the 5th Beatle/Steve Wilson produced acoustic Opeth. but i suppose it is the other way around. Opeth sound like PT. which is a good thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

You're a doll, RS. I just bought and downloaded Hostfalt's 29 Pieces for the Microtonal Guitar from NetMusic. I'm listening to it now. There's some nice stuff here. I think I was expecting it to be more focused on resonance/texture but he seems to be actually more concerned with the melodic possibilities of microtonality. He's got a new album coming out soon.

I played The Infamous just yesterday, as it happens. It is great, yes. Since then:

The Avengers: "TEH AMERIKKKAN IN ME"

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

My next door neighbor who was annoying me by blasting the Thompson Twins is going to think I'm so cool maybe.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. I alternate between laughing at this and getting a litle bummed out by it. I really am more in the mood for their (musically if not lyrically because I'm not sure there are any lyrically) upbeat tunes.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Body Acoustic: S/T.

It's okay, but owes an awful lot to Miles Davis, which leaves me feeling funny since I'm not a Miles Davis fan. Although, well, these piano parts don't sound too much like something that would appear on a Miles Davis album. I think. I haven't heard most of them though. It also reminds me a bit of Jon Hassel's Fascinoma (which, of course, also owed a lot to Miles Davis). It seems like really great late night music though. I like the conga playing a lot.

Personnel:

Bob Mintzer, bass clarinet
Giovanni Hidalgo, congas [I think I have some really awful very generic Latin jazz by him somewhere, but this is quite different. Maybe I'm confusing him with someone else.]
Andy Gonzalez, bass
David Chesky, piano
Randy Brecker, trumpet

Is everybody watching the Republicans? I guess I should be too. I guess I should keep tabs on these fuckers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm cycling Mayhem's 'Chimera' with 'De Mysteriis Don Sathanas' at the moment. Which one do I prefer? That is an unanswerable question.

The deliriously insane Black Ship by the Sadistic Mika Band. It's a Japanese Roxy Music knockoff from 1974 that I had to look up because their band photos were too cool - and the music does live up to it.

The Body Acoustic. (Okay, but I still think the trumpet sounds a little too much like Miles.)

Omar Bashir and Sahar Taha: Baghdadiyat, after hearing some Iraqi music on "Democracy Now." (I really am going to write them an e-mail or something complaining that they don't announce the Arabic music they play, although they usually announce the western things they play.)

Still haven't listened to my two new Willie Rosario CDs all the way through.

I thought the PJ Harvey sounded really good myself, dunno what everyone's all disappointed about but then I didn't catch anything after To Bring You My Love.

I actually kind of like Rush's Feedback

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked Feedback too, Sundar. It's so unexpected from those guys, you know? I only wish they would have had a little more fun with the numbers that offered the opportunity for extravagence. Like "Summertime Blues", there's no reason to cover that one and NOT go for the full-on Blue Cheer treatment. Oh well.

Which one of us is going to nominate Ask the Ages for that silly 90s' poll? I keep waiting for you to blink so I can nominate one of my pet favorites :) Either way, Sonny has to be on there...

Heh, "Reed", maybe we should make a deal. I can nominate Ask the Ages if you agree to nominate Lost Rivers perhaps.;)

Lifeson's pretty great on Feedback, eh? I like how he just piles on layers of texture and, well, feedback and makes it pretty. Also a bit of a surprise in that Geddy doesn't shriek at all. Even in the moments where he does go high, he's all clean and rounded. By his standards anyway. I really noticed how well he enunciates. I have to say that "For What It's Worth" has never been my favourite song to begin with though.

Yes - Relayer. I never heard this before. It sounds really great so far.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Could this be better than Close to the Edge? Moraz is so much cooler than Wakeman and is Howe actually using a lot of effects? What an amazing sound. Why doesn't everyone love Yes?

And yeah, why DOESN'T everyone love Yes?? I guess there are like, Fiery Furnaces and Girls Aloud records to attend to or something. Fuck if I know.

Then I went outside and it was brisk and autumny and I just ended up listening to Sung Tongs again. What a great fall album.

i am listening to one year by colin blunstone again. it is fairly new to me.

Um, I'm not really sure where that question's coming from but she's 1.5 yrs younger. We listen to some similar things (Beatles, Neil Young, Nick Drake, Portishead, Fugees, Sonic Youth, REM, Soundgarden, PJ Harvey; we saw Lal and Andrew WK together; she bought me Sean Paul's Dutty Rock). I don't really give anything up just because she listens to it unless I'm misunderstanding that part.

Sacrifist is currently #1 on the list of albums I hated when I first heard them and love now. It's funny that Yamatsuki Eye is almost entirely responsible for my then-hate/now-love. Eye, and Bernie Worrell.

As it happens this is about as untrue as a musical statement can be!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree. If I didn't like Jel so much his Bon Jovi fixation would horrify me.

Don't listen to me, though. I spent a solid half-hour listening to Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" on repeat today.

Also the Hives album. Listened to that a LOT.

Right now, Farid El Atrache: Hekayet El Omr Kolloh, a nice new package on Virgin Arabia for (I think) mostly late-career material by a singer/oudist/composer who is no longer alive. I think I will be saying more about this on ILM. I don't think I've ever heard these first two songs, but they are both good.

Kings of Convenience, "I'd Rather Dance With You" (damn good)

White Stripes, "The Hardest Button to Button" (hey, still playing catchup here!!)
andumsomemybloodyvalentinewhichi'mbeginningtolikealot
(buti'llstoplisteningtoitifsomeonehasaproblemwithmylisteningtoit)

I'm trying my hardest not to listen to anything New Wave or New Romantic. Best to abandon that musical comfort food and try to actually listen to things people around my age listen to for once in my life. :)

(Though I just acquired some rare Duran tracks, including that infamous Krush Brothers track and the instrumental version of "Bomb", which I found out last week was mislabelled as "Throb" on the b-sides compilation I own. And they're tempting me. Fuck. :( )

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 12 September 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do I even bother trying to keep current when the best recordings are mostly from the past? I realize that these are fuzzy terms, but I know what I mean.

Rockist, this is the kind of attitude I'm steadfastly trying to avoid permanently adopting. I've spent FAR too much time idolizing the past and trying to revive a period that has long since passed me by. This is partly why I've abandoned all my Duran stuff, even though this past week was a terrible one for me and I usually reach out to my Duran stuff when times are difficult. I don't want to slip into the same comfortable outfit I've been suffocating myself in over the past dozen years or so. I want to try on new clothes. Or at least "new to me" clothes.

Rockist, this is the kind of attitude I'm steadfastly trying to avoid permanently adopting.

But I'm thinking of a lot of music from the past which is still new to me, so I don't think it's the same situation you're in. (I haven't heard it yet, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be good since so much else I've heard by the same artists, and from the same milieus, is good.)

Also, depending on how narrowly you define the musical "present"--and I would tend to, pretty generously, think of it as the last five to ten years--the past is going to have had more years to come up with good recordings.

But I'm not actually looking for an argument about when music was better. It's a losing battle. I'm more interested in drawing attention to things I like (from whenever).

Dee, Duran Duran were on Top of the Pops on Friday - original line-up, I believe. They are no longer the past!

I just saw a video clip of that very TOTP performance and was amazed at (a.) how much the audience seemed to be getting into the performance and (b.) how much *I* was getting into the performance. Plus, they're actually about as polished as they would normally be, which is good.

But I'm thinking of a lot of music from the past which is still new to me, so I don't think it's the same situation you're in. (I haven't heard it yet, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be good since so much else I've heard by the same artists, and from the same milieus, is good.)

I too am trying to play catchup with a lot of artists from the past, though. So I am sorta in the same sort of boat that you're in. Point taken with the rest of your post, though.

Me, I, um, got dragged into the Durantrap. After viewing the infamous Duran vs. Spandau "Pop Quiz" ep and previewing a track that I *think* is the "Astronaut" one, um, they got me again. Argh argh argh argh.

This minute, I'm listening to the song "Tower of Strength" by the Mission (on the 80s cable station). I think I used to have an old cassette with it back in school, but even then in my pseudo-goth haze, I couldn't quite love it. It has lots of elements that make me feel like it's close to being a great song, but it just fails somehow. It may be Wayne Hussey's vocals in parts. I dunno.

The York library has it. (The guy in charge of the audiovisual section is a Hendrix fanatic who gave a colloquium two years ago where he compared and contrasted over 60 bootlegs of "Red House".) This appears to be a legitimate release. It's copyright 2001 Experience Hendrix under exclusive license to MCA Records catalogue # 088 112 737-2. Recorded live at the Capitol Theatre Mar 19, 1968 second show. Apparently the Soft Machine opened but they're unfortunately not on the recording. It's not Woodstock or the Isle of Wight but there are some pretty intense performances. Some v cool feedback on PH.

I'll look for that Murail, milton. BTW I just mailed you a CD tonight. It'll be in tomorrow's mail.

See, this is the kind of Hendrix fan I can't quite fathom. I don't even feel the need for one copy of "Red House" let alone 60. (WXPN used to do an annual Hendrix special that lasted several hours and I remember them playing "Red House" over and over again.)

Me? Marcel Khalife's Caress. I still have the occasional uneasy feeling that made this "really is" bad. It is very airy certainly.

Earlier, Susie Ibarra's Folkloriko. I think I like the first 2/3 better than the last, but one thing I noticed this time around is the was the instruments will sometimes switch responsibility for time-keeping (I guess you could say), not that there's always a precise pulse.

Right this moment I'm listening to a burned CD (from a record) my roommate gave me with two tracks of Jaco Pastorius, John McLaughlin, and Tony Williams playing together live. It totally lives up to my expectations of TOTALLY SICK, albeit with really really shitty sound quality.

And, on the fairly-often-lately front: a whopping plethora of Mano Negra, a group I only recently heard for the first time, after having become such a disgustingly obsessive Manu Chao fan and having worked my way backwards to their material. They were so totally the Euro-Fishbone. And so, of course, I'm in love.

Come on, RS, "Red House" is a classic song + one where Hendrix really demonstrated the variety, depth, and range of his improvisational skills, melodically and rhythmically as well as just sonically. There are lots of things a guitarist could learn from a comparative analysis. I probably wouldn't hunt down 60 copies either but given how much useless crap people do in the world + all the other things that go on in universities I don't find it that hard to fathom.

I'm listening to that same Sachiko/Otomo disc right now, Julio. Earlier I was listening to the Summerstage premiere of Cage's "Four^6", which I'm going to ask you about on the 90s poll thread on ILM. Also, PJ Harvey's Dry (I'm still smarting about the time in pop class when I wanted to discuss how her posing naked in a non-model way was, yes, a feminist act but at the same time could reinscribe some of the concepts she was opposing and wankers shouted me down because they just thought I was saying that there's no difference between that and Spice Girls cheesecake shots because they thought I was a fanatical popist is this the longest sentence I've ever typed I hope so FUCKING WANKERS), Sten Hostfalt's 29 Pieces (I'm going to try burning this again - the sound seems problematic at times), Miles Davis' Pangaea.

sundar, "Red House" is too purely bluesy for me. I haven't heard it in a while though, so maybe that makes less sense than I think it does; but from what I remembmer, it was just basically a blues song. I'm sure a guitarist could learn from listening to whatever by Hendrix, but as a non-guitarist, non-blues fan, I can do without.

Yeah, RS, it's a totally straight blues song but it gives Hendrix lots of space to improvise. I totally understand your reasons for not being interested.

Pavement – Slanted and Enchanted
Plastikman – Closer
T. N. Krishnan – The Carnatic Violin
Chunks of Are You Experienced?
Fila Brazilia – A Touch of Cloth
Aphex Twin – SAW 85-92

The new Megadeth album is good.

Marcel Khalife - Dreamy Sunrise

That sounds like it would be something bad. Did you download this (or something) because I've mentioned his name (or am I beign megalomaniac in thinking so)? Because he has put out far more junk than good material, and this sounds like it would be one of his bland instrumental orchestral things.

Does she have an album coming out or anything?

Alas not yet. Lady S is working on a new single though. I think she's working with someone from Roll Deep as well as Medasyn and Skinner on some tracks.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Only album was the new Dizzee. The rest is individual tracks. Some inspired by some threads on ILM, some more or less random:

Rolling Stones - Moonlight Mile
Big Bud - Millenium
Alex Banks - Control
Ram Trilogy - Titan
Biostacis - Titanium
Digital - Ease Off
Billy Bland - Little Boy Blue (in which he claims you spell his name 'B-O-B-B-Y' - can you tell who he is covering, without much thought)
Motorhead - Ace Of Spades
Culture - Where The Tree Falls
Tommy Hunt - The Complete Man
Lee Perry - Yakety Yak and Cold Weather
Dom & Roland - Spooks
Shorty - Shorty's Return
Andreas Kremer - Minestrone
Pink - There You Go

also Top Of The Pops: McFly, Minnie Driver, Marilyn Manson. All sounds the same, this young people's music.

the first gal costa album: the beginning of 'nao identificado' is almost a haze of electronics. I think it wd make a terrific beginning to a mixtape.

I saw an Arabic music video that appeared to have an anti-piracy message. The chorus was something like, "Insik haram. . ." It was done in the current reigning popular Egyptian style, with two vocalists, a male and female. (The male seemed a little better than average.) It looks like I'm able to catch an Al-Jazeera news broadcast on the international channel, but it's all in Arabic. :(
