Really Joey, it's okay, I'm not mad. I promise. Come home.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:41 (twenty years ago)

This is the thread where I say - Pt 18: We'll Dress Like Minnie Pearl

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I always wondered about that song - who was Joey? What did he do? Why was she angry? DAMMIT JOHNETTE, I NEED ANSWERS.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago)

wasn't he passed out on the floor?

kephm (kephm), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I have spent the entire day reading Doyle Brunsons Super System at work. Fuck you worko.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:47 (twenty years ago)

what are all these "this is where i say" threads about anyway?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:49 (twenty years ago)

not much and everything else?

kephm (kephm), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago)

joey's main problem seemed to be drink.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Still don't feel like going to work!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:52 (twenty years ago)

it's hard to make it to work when you are passed out on the floor

kephm (kephm), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, he was drunk and complaining or something.

(I actually like most everything else on the album more. And I LOOOOOVE the album. See?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago)

I was kinda hoping someone was gonna bring up Joey's sitcom. I'm afraid that it's gonna be a little too much Joey.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Joey, you're not funny anymoooooooooooooore....

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago)

What was that show where this kid was a teenage tennis sensation, or something like that? Her bother was Joey wasn't it? Phenom??

Oh! I'm thinking of Blossom. Jess is right I watch too much damn TV.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I was kinda hoping someone was gonna bring up Joey's sitcom. I'm afraid that it's gonna be a little too much Joey.

do you think that's gonna be a Frasier or Joanie Loves Chachi II: Joanie IS Chachi?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:57 (twenty years ago)

the amg bio needs an update, CB arent broken up anymore.

kephm (kephm), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)

It won't even be a Cybill.

x-post

Sean Bateman (Barima), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Phenom!
Whatever happened to the brother from that show? He was funny.

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I am curious to see Adriana from the Sopranos on the Joey show though.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Huck! The brother was in High Fidelity apparently!

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0521974/

jel -- (jel), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I want to see Joey self-immolate for our pleasure. Hang on, that's my schtick.

Sean Bateman (Barima), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit, of course he was!

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Phenom -vs- Small Wonder -vs- Out Of This World

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

i'm sorry, is it okay to talk about t.v. shows on this thread? i didn't mean to derail it. i can go start a Small Wonder thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:14 (twenty years ago)

who cares?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago)

(sorry)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Ugh. Getting sicker.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:16 (twenty years ago)

The point of this thread is to derail this thread. That's the beauty of it - you can't derail it because it isn't about anything.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Just watch out with Growing Pains trivia, it tends to break Luna's brain.

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh, okay! Gee, I'm good at that!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I just had creamy peanut butter on a single piece of 12 grain bread!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago)

See? Perfect.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:20 (twenty years ago)

10 more posts.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Well, 8 more after this one.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:20 (twenty years ago)

What's the countdown for?

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Because I am a giant dork, over.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to take a nap while Rufus is taking his. He got up early and I only got 5 hours of sleep. Seeya later!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago)

10-4, G.B., over.

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I think I might go home early from sickness, despite the fact that we're already getting off at 4.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago)

It's a little silly, really.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I was supposed to have an easy day, but I just made it difficult.

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Who, me? But I feel like crap and my eyes keep watering up.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I was looking at the users thing yesterday, and realized that this - yes, this one right here - is my 10,000th post. In just under 2 years. I thought it would be a little more exciting, that there would be drinks, or at least balloons, but nope, nothing, other than the slight satisfaction of knowing that I have wasted spent 10,000 posts worth of my life on ILe.

Thank you, I love you all.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Not you, Nick - go home, get better. Tell them I said it was ok.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

I not sure I'm cut out for this thread, sadly.

Sean Bateman (Barima), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Can the seamstress humour, Sean.

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:34 (twenty years ago)

the care bears care

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:35 (twenty years ago)

well done Luna! You've got to push on to the 20K, such is the nature of the beast.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:37 (twenty years ago)

That's cardboard humour to you, Chuckles.

Sean Bateman (Barima), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

where do you find out how many posts you have made?

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

click on users, and then click on 'show for all messages'

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

10,000 posts! Luna is one of us. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:40 (twenty years ago)

You, me and the Borg, baby.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

hmm, your achievement is indeed mighty

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

And yet somehow, lame.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit! I was 12K before I lost my log-in! I is lame.

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:50 (twenty years ago)

but so adorable.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Shucks!

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I feel bad Nick had to go home. Now we'll be sickies together - what great hosts we'll be for my dad! I guess he's not really a party animal type anyway. That makes me think of Spudz McKenzie (?).

I had creamy peanut butter on a cinnamon raisin bagel earlier. I am much more for extra crunchy, but that's what was in the work kitchen.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Casuistry will vouch that that is a very close approximation to what I actually look like.

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago)

One of these days I'm gonna name a TITTWIS thread!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm only at 8249 (now 8250) posts total. :-(

But enough about me... Congrats, luna!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:08 (twenty years ago)

you can name the next one, Sarah.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait to get on a PLANE!! I love airports! I love traveling! It's all so exciting!

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Where are you going?

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Mandee, Did you just change your user name again or are you a different mandee?

I'm going to an airport in an hour to pick up my Dad.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I am at home now. Hi!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm not getting out of work early liked I hoped. I might not make it to the comic store! Must...be...bigger...nerd!

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Hi, Nick.

Huck, Don't let go of your dream!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago)

To lessen the reunion spectacle, the Pixies put on more than a dozen warm-up gigs last April in what they hoped were obscure, out of the way cities, to make the whole thing more “low key.”
Those dates included stops in Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Victoria.
Thompson says Canada was key because “even though the jet age has made it possible for all of us to travel everywhere, let’s face it, there are probably not a lot of London-based journalists that are going to get their editors to buy them a round trip ticket to Regina.”

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Lucky me, I'm done work a whole TEN minutes early. Fuckaduck!

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Holy cow, a kiss for Luna for remembering (while I, on the other hand, forgot) that this thread was named for "Joey." I'm pretty sure he was a lover or an ex- lover of Johnette's who had a drug problem. I never knew C0ncrete Bl0nde sang the song. I always figured it was Heart. And it makes me weepy. AND it's P!nk's favorite song. So there.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Are you kidding? I've been desperate to get that other thread over with so I could name it this! (I R a dork). I love it, too.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:24 (twenty years ago)

I can vouch that Huckatron does indeed look vaguely like that. A little less emotive, and different hair, but it's the basic idea.

I'm home from work! Ahhhh!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:14 (twenty years ago)

I never knew C0ncrete Bl0nde sang the song. I always figured it was Heart.

Haha! EVERYONE thought that. I think I only knew it wasn't because I reviewed the album for KLA when it first came out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:18 (twenty years ago)

I saw Concrete Blonde perform "Joey" on 120 Minutes and I felt it was a vastly superior version to the CD. Just acoustic guitar and vocals, and JN really belted it out.
I was under the impression that the song was about AIDS?

They also did Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" on there, but I think it was a different appearance.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I was under the impression that the song was about AIDS?

That's actually the subject of "Tomorrow, Wendy" from the same album, which is an Andy Prieboy cover.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:27 (twenty years ago)

ah...well in any case that 120 min Joey performance pwned.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:29 (twenty years ago)

My teacher hates me.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

I am bummed out. I am considering starting a thread about being hated on by teachers.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

What a punk. Sir, we will drink to the confounding of the foolish teacher on the morrow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Hm... drink....

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago)

OMG IT'S FRIDAY!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

AND A THREE-DAY WEEKEND!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

LAST ONE COVERED IN TEQUILA IS A ROTTEN EGG!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Drink is high on the agenda for the following two evenings. This is why this evening will be one of relaxation and preparation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I agree! Also, where do you want to eat?

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Saturday, 4 September 2004 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Well, pretty much check over that link I sent ya! As I'm up for anything, I trust yer judgment -- if something looks like the must try place, let's do it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 01:01 (twenty years ago)

Okay, check your email early in the morning, I'll ship over some shit then.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Saturday, 4 September 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Rock. Haven't heard back from Laura yet but I'll keep checking and at the least Bene should be up for joining us after food. Meantime, I'm going to try making a tomato sauce here...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 01:07 (twenty years ago)

And Jeremy! Just heard from Arthur and he's definitely in for dinner at least!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Wow, food, fun, liquor, and NEW POSTERS! Welcome, one and all, to the insanity!

Huck, last night, while I was doing my homework, I listened to bits and pieces of your radio stint and thought it was awesome how low-key your speaking voice is! I don't often get to hear soft, quiet speaking, so when I do, it's a treat. I have to say that I didn't think much of the music, but I'm guessing that's not what you usually play on your shows.

Hi, Pink! Hi, Archel! Hi, everyone else!

(Chris, sorry, but I'm a rotten egg. I will ALWAYS be the last one covered with tequila.)

Oh, and thanks to this thread, I've got "Joey" stuck in my head. Gee, thanks a lot. ;) No, really, it's cool. I'd much rather have that song stuck in my head than a song by some random teenybopper pop tart. MUCH, MUCH rather.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:29 (twenty years ago)

And congrats to luna on her 10,000th post! I seriously doubt I will ever get to that number. I think I'm probably working toward post # 3,000 or something similar. LONG way off.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for listening, Dee! Sorry the music wasn't more to your liking, I think sometimes that I probably alienate people by being all over the place like that, like I'll play some really cheesy stuff and then some really serious stuff and I'm not offended if you didn't like the music. Most of what I played last night is stuff that I'd normally play. My regular show is just before a show that counts down the Cdn Campus Charts, so I do neglect a lot of that stuff that you mind like more out of respect for the kids after me. Still, I'm glad you liked my voice! I've actually been sort of working on it lately, taping my show and listening back to it way to often and measuring how long a good pregnant pause should be. Though my pauses are only a little pregnant.

Wasn't the album called Bloodletting and had lotsa vampire references and stuff and very Annerician, and AIDS:Vampirism:weirdness.

Huck, Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes, my friend. This is why you should check that link I created. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Did I miss it, or is there no reviewer credit on that? Did they stop running bylines at AMG, or did I miss it? (Fully willing to cop to missing it if I did!)
Anyway, I don't know what Dee was talking about Ned, you can too write.

(just kidding)
(just kidding about Dee saying something, not about Ned can too write)
actually, it's almost funny how well you nailed what everybody was trying to say on this thread.

Huck, Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:04 (twenty years ago)

Ugh "Joey" always reminds me of my alcoholic ex, who was adopted and found out just after we broke up that his birth name had been Joe. So the song was like, too close to the bone.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Except, uh, you are still angry, I presume?

Huck, Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:14 (twenty years ago)

This is why you should check that link I created
Oh man I just had a Pauly Shore flashback...

Check out the wood you created!
Lisa Lisa! (Pauly! Pauly!) The One I Ador-ore!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Except, uh, you are still angry, I presume?

Eh... not really. Wouldnt piss on him if he was on fire but Im not angry like I used to be, nah. The song lyrics are pretty close to the situ I was in though.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:17 (twenty years ago)

make...it...stop...

I'm a stony crusty dude with a mop on top
My melon's fully tweaked and I'll never stop
Stop trying to weaz the nugs from coast to coast
The ones with the cones are the ones I dig the most
Lisa, Lisa!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:19 (twenty years ago)

From the web:

Concrete Blonde
Joey
Joey, baby - don't get crazy
Detours, fences...I get defensive
I know you've heard it all before
So I don't say it anymore
I just stand by and let you
Fight your secret war
And though I used to wonder why
I used to cry till I was dry
Still sometimes I get a strange pain inside
Oh, Joey, if you're hurting so am I
Joey, honey - I got some money
All is forgiven. Listen, listen
But if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you.
And when you said I scared you
Well I guess you scared me too
But we got lucky once before
And I don't want to close the door
And if you're somewhere out there
Passed out on the floor
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore
And if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you.
And when you said I scared you
Well I guess you scared me too
But if it's love you're looking for
Then I can give a little more
And if you're somewhere drunk and
Passed out on the floor
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore
Angry anymore, angry anymore

Don't fuck with me, I have a Ph.D. in Spelling.

Huck, Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Huck, Saturday, 4 September 2004 03:42 (twenty years ago)

What should I make for lunch?

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Saturday, 4 September 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Go to a Farmer's Market and go nuts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

No, go cabbage!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 19:28 (twenty years ago)

(I went spearmint & pecans)

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Saturday, 4 September 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Sunday night. And for me it's NOT a three day weekend (we had one of those last week though). So I have the sunday night blues, only a little bit, and mainly because, after I've eaten my sausage butty, I don't know what to do with myself! I sort of want to watch a Sopranos DVD, but that's something me and S do together and she's still in Arkansas and it doesn't feel quite right doing it alone.

Anyway, hello to everyone, and have a great holiday.

(p.s. I went to the seaside today (Bognor Regis, if you're interested) and my trousers are STILL WET from being splashed when paddling. And no, Archie, I didn't fall in. Not even close.)

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 5 September 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago)

How can it be Sunday night? I just woke up!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 5 September 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Hi all! Hope y'all are enjoying your day off!
I've just had the best w/e! I am so tired this morning though, ah well!
Right ladeez, any ideas of how I could have my hair cut? I am so desperate for a change. At the moment it's long, straight & has no fringe. Any ideas?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 06:56 (twenty years ago)

Mohawks on ladies will be the next trend, mark my words. A few months ago I did a mohawk on a friend of mine, and she looked terrific!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:10 (twenty years ago)

But I doubt a mohawk would fit you, judging from the couple of pics I've seen.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:15 (twenty years ago)

i always think mohawks would be annoyingly high maintenance. what happens if you want to have an arvo nap, you'd have to respike for your evening commitments.

gem (trisk), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:16 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking more of a shorter mohawk, not the punk type.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:25 (twenty years ago)

Hm, I am being serious i need suggestions from the laddeez of this thread. Also, I have no idea what this 'Joey' song is!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:30 (twenty years ago)

ok here is a serious sort of suggestion, depending on your hair. i recently got my long (halfway down my back) fringeless hair cut. i have copious amounts of thick wavy/curly hair which is totally unmanageable, and the hairdresser cut lots of the top leaving quite short layers all around the crown but still really long layers beneath and a longish fringe to one side. i was a bit scared that i would look a bit like a mushroom or as if i were wearing a triangular helmet on my head when i dry it straight, or alternatively that i'd have mental little short curls on the top when curly. or even worse, i would be a try hard trendy with mullet stylings. i was proved utterly wrong on all counts! it is one of the best hair cuts i've ever had! so i say get some layers chopped/razored into it.

gem (trisk), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Pink: Joey I'm Not Angry Anymore... if you present me with a an em41l addy that can accept large file sizes I'll send it to you.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:38 (twenty years ago)

I haven't got speakers at work & i'm not on the interweb at home, thanks anyway.
Thanks Gem. I have really fine hair & I've got short layers around the front & longer layers round the back. I know i really need to post a pic, but I dont have one. arrrgghhh I just want a change. :-(

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:41 (twenty years ago)

Morning Pink! I am totally clueless when it comes to hair I'm afraid. Today I am being as close to adventurous as I ever get, my wearing my hair down.

Had a pretty quiet weekend, ending somewhat unfortunately last night with The Worst Electronic Music I Have Ever Heard. In a cellar. On a beautiful sunny evening. While an asshat who my best friend inexplicably crushes on seemed to be doing his best to humiliate her. Grrr.

But, only today and tomorrow to work and then I have the rest of the week off for camping woo!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:44 (twenty years ago)

hey jeremy could you send "joey" to my gmail? I haven't heard it in a while...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:58 (twenty years ago)

i've had it stuck in my head since this thread came to the surface of new answers. frankly i'd be happy with a bit of silence from the johnette in my head

gem (trisk), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:00 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I wish i knew which song everyone was going on about.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:08 (twenty years ago)

it was a massive hit here in australia when i was at high school in the late 80s/early 90s, i remember the video being rewound and played over and over ad nauseum in the rec room at my boarding school. maybe that's why i don't like it!

gem (trisk), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Morning everyone. Is it physically possible for me to have put on FOUR FUCKING POUNDS in 48 hours? Because that's what my scales say. I was all happy on Saturday (the official end date for my diet) but after a wedding with requisite food and drink and a lethargic Sunday with a big lunch, I seem to have achieved the impossible of actually turning thin air into lard. This is really depressing me.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:37 (twenty years ago)

< / moany vain emo twat >

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:37 (twenty years ago)

It is possible mark, although it'll probably even out over the next week.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:38 (twenty years ago)

I hope so! It can't be water retention as surely having a hangover means that you're body's doing the opposite! Seriously, I didn't even eat 4 pounds of stuff, so it's a mystery*

*yes, I am conveniently ignoring liquids, even though it's probably all their fault

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Big nights out or whatever will always do that mark, try not to worry too much, oh & don't weigh yourself again til next week!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:47 (twenty years ago)

Okay.

I'm not very happy today and have already fucked something up at work. Sigh. I need a holiday.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:51 (twenty years ago)

Dude, you just having a bad day or is there something more?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Mark, I can relate. I was depressingly lardy last week (all food available at work seems to be pastry-based). Subsisted over the weekend on low fat yoghurt in a desperate attempt to look normal by today. All stupid of course.

Can you book some time off? Give you something to look forward to? Maybe you and Sarah can have a holiday together when she gets back?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:58 (twenty years ago)

You guys on aim? We could have a little tittytwister chat room?

I'm taking the day off when Sarah gets back (next Friday), though I expect she'll spend most of it sleeping :) We're hopefully going to Venice in a month or two, though we really need to get that organised.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 09:06 (twenty years ago)

On msn, might be on aim later!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Jeremy I sent you Amon Duul II "Archangels Thunderbird" in exchange for "Joey". Hope you don't already have it...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 6 September 2004 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Man, I'm having some crazy hot flushes over here. I mean, it's a hot day, but seriously I feel like someone's ironing my head. Feel kind of sick too. Am I having an early menopause?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago)

I feel like that today, but I don't think mine is the menopause! (not that i think you are having that. oh just shut up pp!)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Well I would be quite surprised to have a menopause at 26 I must admit! Some other meteorological/hormonal freak no doubt.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:30 (twenty years ago)

It couldn't just be because it's quite warm, could it? i.e. warmer than it's been for a few weeks? I spent Sunday at the seaside which was lovely - I wish I could do it more often.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I love how the "how do you feel today" thread is just TITTWIS for those who'd never allow themselves to be so emo on *this* thread :)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

The seaside rules for the fish & chips & paddling alone!
(sorry archel)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Will you both come to MY bit of seaside soon? Please!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes definitely! Only if you & matt will come to our halloween housewarming! :-)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I would love to. My other Cambridge friend has just moved to a new house too, so hopefully I can combine the two visits!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Holiday!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Celebrate!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I'm actually here at home at this time, just listening to MP3s and reading a few threads. I have to leave the house in an hour to attend a relative's birthday party, and yesterday was quite a lengthy and action-packed day (is it just my family that could've thought of having two competing Labor Day BARBECUES?), but it felt good waking up "late" (i.e. 9:30), sitting down for awhile to read Saturday's newspaper (still have Sunday's to read), oh yeah, and posting here at this time.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:45 (twenty years ago)

(No really, that's quite admirable. *applause*)

luna (luna.c), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

luna (luna.c), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Unfun! But you get to wear those cool bandaids with flowers on them or something.

The headache from the hangover lingers still, so more aspirin for me. And then off to see Hero.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:58 (twenty years ago)

You know what fucking rocks for the cocktail flu? Excedrine Migraine and lots of water.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, noted. The water is well taken of (I am going to bring a big ol' bottle to the theater.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I've spent a good portion of this vacation weekend being bored, but it didn't bother me at all. I actually kind of enjoyed it. The malls were a bit nuts today. Jerseyites getting their Labor Day Sales on. Did some wedding registry stuff with my best friend (the bride-to-be). I don't think I've ever said the words "gravy boat" and "flatware" and "bundt pan" so many times in a single hour before.

It's fall here. No doubt about it. Mellow, mellow weekend. But crazy three weeks to come. Told my NYC showbiz uncle that I want to pursue standup tonight. So I assume NYC showbiz will now open its doors and embrace me.
Also, for some reason, everytime I get Vietnamese lately, I just go for s&s spare ribs, which I NEVER liked in my whole life until about 6 months ago. Now, I'm like, addicted.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago)

At the Vietnamese place we went to?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't it Vietnamese? I don't think I ever actually ate Vietnamese food until I got to Canada, and then I had it in Winnipeg and Regina. And... I don't think I've had it since!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 05:27 (twenty years ago)

Yes!
Funny you bring it up, because I just mentioned the museum on that thread, you know the one where I would bring up the museum.
My new apt. is not very close to Viet-Thai but it is pretty close to Little Saigon, which is about equally good in terms of pretty tasty and pretty cheap.

Huck, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago)

The place we went to licked ass. I haven't been back there since.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 05:50 (twenty years ago)

Your name was below the bottom of the window, and I though Chris was making a pretty witty joke. Because HE HASN'T BEEN BACK!

Huck, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 05:54 (twenty years ago)

Since when has licking ass been a bad thing??

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Nice hat Jeremy!

I played in a rather large poker tournament this weekend and won $2500. Looks like my vacation is paid for. Best thing about it was i won the whole tournament around 12am while Player's "Baby Come Back" was playing in the background.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Good going, Chris. I'm sad you didn't want to take up my offer of investing in you!!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Anyone care to join me in the 'Archel's only got 4.5 hours left at work before fucking off for 5 days' dance? I can do it solo, but you know, it's fun!

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm shaking my arse wide-style, Archie!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:41 (twenty years ago)

There's nothing like coming back to work after a long weekend to make you feel like your life is going nowhere.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Yay, Archel! How fun! I'm happy because it's a four day work week.

This morning, I woke up to a seductive female voice saying:
"Would you like me to take my clothes off? Yeah, that's right. Aaaaaallll the way off?
No, I'm not just being a tease. I want to take my clothes off just for you. So come down the Gentleman's club after work..."
Nick had put the radio alarm on some modern rock station. ha ha

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I woke up to the same thing, only I had drifted off at the massage parlour again.

Huck, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Argh, fuck up at work and it's my fault and I'm feeling picked on and resentful and desperately trying to think of ways in which it's not my fault, but I can't. Somehow I've got to shake this persecution complex. I DO try, but not consistently enough, and that's my downfall. Days when I'm slack fuck up the rest of the time when I actually do work pretty well. God I'm a dick.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry you're having such a hard day, Markelby. Hang in there!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:52 (twenty years ago)

The new interns are here, and they seem like morons.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Well, at least they only "seem" like morons.

Why do the sales reps and customers expect me to work today? I need today to just acclimate myself to being in the work environment after a break. Surely they know that?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I really don't want to be at work today. Or any day, but especially today. I think a two-month horror story involving the disappearance of a young girl is going to come to an unhappy conclusion today, and I hate being here when evil shit happens.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Oh, yeah, and everybody here should read Ballad of the Whiskey Robber when it comes out in 10 days. Or maybe wait for the paperback. But it's really, really good.

xpost: Huck, I saw that cover on ILb and was like 'well, I'm sold!'

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I feel kind of crappy today too. I have absolutely no energy at all. I'm not sure if this is from sleeping on the floor the last few days, the end of the holiday, or the low-grade cold I've had for about a week now. I really don't want to do work but for once I actually have some stuff to do.

On the plus side, the Fake Fictions have a whole bunch of shows at the end of the month now. Wa-hee!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Nick, was that link to a band's website some band we're playing with? I guess I should find out when these shows are. :-D

My job is dumb.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Since when has licking ass been a bad thing??

Good point, Mark. Ok, the place licked a dysentery-ridden porcupine's ass.

Hi everyone!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Hy Brian, er...

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Hello again. It seems I am *slightly* less to blame for the fuck-up than I thought (say 75% rather than 100%) and it's been resolved without being a big problem for anyone, so I'm feeling a little more chipper. Thanks for your support :)

Archie, I make too many mistakes, that's the crux to be honest. I just feel I'm stretching the patience of the people I most need to impress.

My flip-flop hate has risen in my gullet like so many dysentery-ridden-porcupine quills. It's somehow worse when people you actually like wear them.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Bryan: Well, we didn't die, at least.

Archel & Mark, for sepearate reasons: Huzzah!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I just booked us into the campsite - turns out you can't have camp fires or barbecues on site which is a bit of a gyp but v excited otherwise :)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago)

That's a bummer. Where's the joy of camping with out FIRE? On my June camping expedition, I discovered I absolutely love chopping firewood. I think I've missed my calling.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Please don't break out into the lumberjack song.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry. Never been a Python fan.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I think that stems from my early days on the high school Improv team, when half the squad thought that, well, you know damn well what they thought.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Which doesn't mean Python is bad, it just means quoting Python incessantly is bad.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Also, what other thread?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Im excited to get home and watch the Bands Reunited show on Haircut 100 tonight.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I hadn't really seen much Python beforehand, so when I finally did, I was like, hey, these guys stole all their routines from those nerds at the back of my Geo-Trig class!

other thread was the stuffed animals in museums thread.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:00 (twenty years ago)

This thread needs to be more active today, dammit!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Um, I'm going to eat a frozen burrito for lunch? But I'm going to microwave it first? See what you can do with that.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I'm about to head off to work! Weren't you going to pop something in the mail for me several months ago? It's OK if you didn't, but if you did, then it never got here.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Email me yr mailing address and I'll do it. I'm so scatterbrained. And lazy.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago)

I have e-mailed you, Huck.

Also, that seems like a sad story. What happened to the happy Saskatchewan of my youth?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Sadly, this is part of Saskatchewan that's always been here, only it's been easier to look away from before this. No developments as of this hour, nor will there be any tonight, unless they're searching in the dark.

My brother will be back home from NYC in about 90 minutes. I was talking to my mom earlier tonight, talking about what a lunatic that guy is for not telling anyone when his flight gets in until the last minute, even though he's had the ticket for at least a week. My mom said (remember, I have two younger brothers and an older sister) that all of us kids talk about the other ones as if each one is crazy, except no one talks like that about me anymore. "You're the one they all respect," she said.
"I'm the dull one."
"I like to think of it as 'sensible'."
"You guys know I'm planning on moving to Montreal, Toronto, or maybe even New York to pursue my dream of being a stand up comedian?"
"Oh, you joker, you."

So I'm the dull, sensible brother, who seems to have finally accepted defeat. Maybe I won't go to the airport after all. Who's sensible now, Mom?

PS Casuistry, the envelope is addressed and...in my shoulderbag to be put in the mail tomorrow. The return address is my parents' (same one I gave Kingfish--hey, I'm finally gonna have the book in my hand tonight!), as I don't know my new/next postal code yet.

I had a day off sick yesterday, what have I missed?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 07:06 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea. Busy busy before vacation time. Last night I had a dream that I was playing bass for Haircut 100 and when I got up on stage I had a stack of fan letters from people on ILX. It was weird. All because of that damn Bands Reunited thing on VH1.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 09:41 (twenty years ago)

You given up smoking yet dude?

It was decent, Pink, though I did start to feel a bit sorry for myself because I didn't get any happy birthdays outside my immediate family, Nick, and my best friend from High School. But also, I'm being a bitch, because you guys Happy Birthdayed me on my Birthday thread. I think I was just getting worn out by that evening from playing hostess all weekend (and sleeping on the floor).

Nick, I emailed you some pix but it will probably take a while to transfer.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago)

The thing about birthdays is that you get these expectations that they're supposed to be all special, despite yourself, and then they're just another day, and people are busy or they forget or whatever, and it's actually kind of nice when they're over. Especially if there's leftover cake. I hope there's leftover cake. Cake is important.

I just want this week to be over. It will be soon enough, though...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:46 (twenty years ago)

My last birthday, I had no expectations, and my friends kind of insisted we get people together and go out for dinner, which was nice. Some years I'm happy doing nothing, some years I try to have a bit of a production made. Next year I turn 30 and who knows what I'll demand!

But I generally don't mind if people forget my birthday -- forgetting my birthday is hardly the same as forgetting me.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:51 (twenty years ago)

A good point. I got a bday card this year from a friend who I barely ever hear from otherwise, who I'd kind of discounted as a friend. That said something about her, though--even though she isn't an everyday friend anymore, she still remembers me and wants to keep in touch, in her way.

And then some true, close friends forgot. So it goes, and it doesn't really say anything substantive about the people, not necessarily.

The important thing is the CAKE. There should be more dessert-oriented events in everyday life.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

If you eat French Toast Bagels for breakfast everyday, you'll be happy.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I made a blueberry custard pie last weekend, and the other day convinced one of my roommates (whose birthday is tomorrow, stitch!) that it was clearly a "breakfast pie", although we later agreed that all pies are breakfast pies.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago)

eating breyers cremesavers yogurt is like busting a nut.

velvet bingozo, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Great, now I want pie. (Note: I never *don't* want pie. But now I really want pie.)

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Me too. Breakfast pie, please!

Having said that, I found a McDonald's last night that still deep fries their apple pies. Heaven.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

It's true! Most pies have fruit, or some sort of egg-based stuff. I'm not quite sure how you'd justify chocolate pies, but I eat chocolate for breakfast because I'm too sensitive to the tiny amounts of caffeine to eat anything chocolate at any other time of day.

Cheesecake is also an excellent breakfast.

And thank you, Huck, I now have the KEY TO HAPPINESS.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Ask anyone, since I've been eating them (most often with peanut butter, sometimes, when I'm feeling like a member of the pre-Revolution French aristocracy, with butter and syrup--even though there's already POCKETS of syrup inside!!!) I've been the happiest man I know.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I have an Italian pie sitting on my desk, but I'm too diet-focused to eat it! After the shock of putting 4 pounds on over the weekend (although they appear to have all dropped off, hurrah) I'm stcking with my health regime at least until Sarah gets back. 9 days and counting...

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Have you had the Taco Bell deep fried apple empanada things yet?

I don't actually like French Toast all that much, unless it's made just so. It's generally too eggy for me.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Eat the pie, Mark. EAT IT.

yes, Chris, I've had them, and they're just this side of heaven, but the caramelly goodness is almost too much.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Thank god it's lunch time, as all I had for breakfast was some yogourt. I'm gonna go eat something sweet and fatty!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago)

My friend says the "Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes" are total trash artery-clogging heaven, and I can imagine why they would be, but the high levels of sour cream put me off. I've been debating whether to give the apple empanada a whirl, though...

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Do it. Really, run, don't walk.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Nick made me birthday cupcakes and a small cake - both yellow cake mix and chocolate frosting. I was to take the cake to work to share, but decided at the last minute that it would be better appreciated at home. BWAH HA HA! But yes, birthday cake is what it's all about.

x-post: eat it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Eat it good.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:08 (twenty years ago)

(now that weird al song is in my head)

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Eat it, you say?

Hmm, maybe tomorrow.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:12 (twenty years ago)

No, see, you should do it now, cause then whatever calories you ingest today will be burned off by then, or at least you'll have another day to burn them off before sgs comes back! TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Mashed Potatoes can be your friend

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Well then, maybe I'll just leave the pie on my desk and watch it go bad before my very eyes in a senseless waste of sweet sweet pie self-disciplined flagellation kinda scenario.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago)

That's sick and wrong. Mail it to me.

Oh, Martin, I had no idea you were such a lout! My idea of you needs to be reconsidered.
I just got a call from a band I'm supposed to interview, but totally forgot about. SHIT. And I don't know a goddamn thing about them.
"Uh, can I call you back in 5 minutes?"
SHIT SHIT SHIT

Huk-L, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 17:10 (twenty years ago)

"So, what questions have you always wanted to be asked by an interviewer?"

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't even have my tape recorded at work with me.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

which band?

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Apple picking season opened this past weekend. You know what that means? P-I-E. Lotsa apple pies will be baked by Mama Fury. Hand me the peeler, I am ready.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I don't really have anything to say, and here I am saying so.
I'm freakin' exhausted. And wading hip-deep through some really terrible music. God, why don't these people have real friends? You know, the kind that will tell you that your music sounds like ass, and not in a good way. And that having a chorus about kicking a girl's ass when you're a dude and nothing else on your album gives any sense of you being a social satirist is really shitty, but that's the third song in and most people probably won't make it that far anyway.
Dee, if you think the stuff I play on the radio isn't so hot, you should hear the stuff I pass on.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Is your show tonight? I'll try to give it a listen.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:00 (twenty years ago)

Ladies and gentlebeans, I AM A COMPUTER MASTAH! *laughs*

Okay, so I was forced into that position, but hell, it means that I'm finally using the computer I got for my birthday present last year. :) Yay for using something from 2003 vs. something from 1997!

Long story short -- woke up early this morning to find my computer had frozen in the middle of the night. Spent fifteen minutes trying to unfreeze it using various options, then decided my old computer was finally ready for the garbage heap, so shut down computer and went off to work. After coming home from class and eating dinner, I went upstairs to try to set up the new computer. Spent roughly an hour unpacking everything and plugging everything in, then proceeded to spend roughly three hours trying to set up the computer to accept my old (30GB) HD as the slave to the new (80GB) HD that came with the computer.

This is the first time I have sat down to the computer and IT WORKED!

IT WORKED! IT WORKED! IT WORKED! IT WORKED!

I KNOW COMPUTER STUFF!

La la la la la... excuse me while I come down from a high not altogether unlike the kind that comes from eating too much sugar.

Oh BTW honey, have I mentioned before how much you rock?

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Aw shucks, you're gonna make me blush...

Reminds me, though, I have mail coming your way probably Monday - I'm slow, but I get there eventually!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:33 (twenty years ago)

A kid I went to high school with, and coincidentally, the kid who told me / taught me about masturbation died in a car crash two days ago. He had been diagnosed in the 6 years since I last saw him as having a 'thought disorder.' I would feel sadder, but I remember him so fractionally that I think a serious emotional reaction would be affected. As is - I'm feeling that strange happiness that current ironic-indie film tries so hard to distill: that 'didn't get me this time' tempered enthusiasm, a sarcastic lust-for-life, a cynical fatalist's joi de vivre. I'm listening to a promo of Tom Waits 'Real Gone' last track, 'Day After Tomorrow' and seem on the verge of having a serious fit. But I'm not sure if it's a happy one or sad one, or (likely) an indifferent one. Anyway, if you have a sec...

I am terribly sorry to hear this, Jeremy. My deepest condolences.

(Luna, no rush! I'm just as slow!)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago)

A fit of indifference?

I almost understand.

Tonight at ten (kenan), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:49 (twenty years ago)

It's okay. Now that the moment of surprise has passed, I've put on some Pulp and I went to cut some onions for tomorrow's lunch. I closed my eyes while using the mandoline, because the onions were making them teary. And I accidentally grated 1/8th inch from the end of my knuckle, which had a strangely purgative effect. Granted, there's blood on my t-shirt now.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:50 (twenty years ago)

You go, boy.

Tonight at ten (kenan), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry to hear it, jeremy

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:56 (twenty years ago)

Me too, but at least it was purgative, right? You gotta get it out somehow. Blood seems at least symbolically appropriate.

Tonight at ten (kenan), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:58 (twenty years ago)

Hey kiddos! It's 9.05am & I want pie. mmmm. my friend cooked us a blackberry & apple pie as a housewarming gift. Man it was yummy!!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 07:05 (twenty years ago)

we are all down with the meat pies in NZ, I had a mince and mushroom one today and boyola did it revive me.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

I still have my little pie. I wish I'd remembered it when I came in as I could have had it for breakfast. But now that I am a lithe 177.5 pounds I can't afford to let my guard down for a minute! I MUST be 175 or less by next Friday!!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Hey Rainy!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Hi! I need to stop eating so many pies. May I join this happy thread and chart my progress with you?

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:47 (twenty years ago)

B-b-but why would you want to stop eating pies Rainy?? (hi chica!)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, pies ARE good. Do you have a pie quota? The worst thing for me would be to find I was getting bored of pies. Fortunately they're a rare and wonderful thing in my life, and only on one day a year do I splurge and stuff my face with as many pies as I can find. Hurray for Thanksgiving and Mrs Steady Mike!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I never want to stop completely. Just cut down a bit. Maybe a good quota would be one every fortnight. I could never get bored of pies, they are the greatest foodstuff known to humankind.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:09 (twenty years ago)

So can you choose between a sweet pie & a savoury pie huh?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

It's a tricky one. I think sweet pies have a higher rate of success, but a good savoury pie is pretty much the finest thing ever. The downside of svaoury pies is you can't have ice cream with them.

How many pies are you on at the moment, Rainy? Perhaps there's some kind of patch or gum you culd use as a substitute?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:14 (twenty years ago)

pie gum?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:18 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm finally gonna have a go at making pastry this weekend. I have some lovely apples that I picked from the tree in my mum's backyard that are aching to be in a pie. I should put my hands in ice now so that maybe they'll be cool enough by Saturday.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Hey Bryan! *big hugs* How are you my friend?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:29 (twenty years ago)

Awake at 5:33 am but otherwise ok. I don't know about ilx these days...something about it isn't sitting right with my mind. Maybe that'll change. I am glad to see new people around these parts. The more the merrier.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh dude, what's up huh? Send us an email if you like!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I reckon ILX is quite healthy at the moment. But that may just be because Jon Williams isn't in everyone's face all the time.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:50 (twenty years ago)

DUDES I AM NOW EATING PIE. It's very very nice, though maybe more biscuit (UK style) than pie, kind of shortbready with chocolate. It's good.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:58 (twenty years ago)

mmm, i would love to have some pie. Apparently, strawberries, cakes & Pimms will be available at 3 in the gardens, due to somebodys birthday. hm, nice!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:59 (twenty years ago)

whats Pimms?

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Erm it's a drink. you tend to serve it with lemonade, mint, cucumber & some fruit. V tasty!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Good morning, everyone. *yawning and stretching*

I have too much work to do. The obvious solution is to play on ILX.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I think I've asked this before, is it common to have alcohol at lunchtime in the UK when your at work? I noticed that most of the Uk'ers go to the pub for lunch and have lunch drinks. Not very common here, at least in my neck o the woods.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm not a Uk'er obviously, but I've only ever done that ONCE and it was only because my boss took me out for Mexican food and margaritas.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:28 (twenty years ago)

If I could get bombed at lunch it would make the day a whole lot brighter.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago)

well personally, i wouldn't do it for 2 reasons. I drive to work & I tend to go sleepy after a lunchtime drink. It can depend on your company, for example they might have a regulation where they ban any drinking during working hours, even if you're on lunch. Alot of ppl do drink at lunch though. Usually in the cities where they don't have to drive.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:30 (twenty years ago)

strictly banned here. well only 5 more hours left and then its all vacation all the time for me! I wonder if i can still drink for seven days straight? We shall see.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:34 (twenty years ago)

I do it once in a blue moon - I think I had a beer when me and Matt DC met for lunch, and occasionally my best mate, who works round the corner, meets me for a game of bar billiards, accompanying a pint. So that's 4 drinks at lunch in 14 months - that's probably about right for me.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:34 (twenty years ago)

I do it maybe once every other week, just a pint with friends. Some people do do it every day.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago)

used to do it when i worked right in the city, but not that often as i would get the heavy eyelids once back in the office. i would usually just go run chores and comb through the used bins.

non-office jobs were another story!

kephm, Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:44 (twenty years ago)

yeah one summer i worked landscaping....i think we drank all day.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:45 (twenty years ago)

I have a theory that the people at my work are trying to fatten me up to eat me. Last week it was candy, earlier this week it was chocolate chip cookies, yesterday it was Twinkies (which I managed to avoid due to their non-vegetarianness), today it's Hostess cupcakes and bear claws. I am going to weigh 600 pounds.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm a little bit hungover. Woo hoo.
In my writing job, I can drink on the job most of the time. But I've learned the hard way that you have to be sensible about it. My mom was right! I AM the sensible one.

That Willie Nelson cover is the best thing he's put out (except maybe his kids album, which I haven't heard yet, and probably his Lanois-produced instrumental album) in years. His albums lately SUCK ASS. And I LOVE Willie Nelson, so I oughtta know.
Though the main reason I played it was that it was the right length. It totally didn't fit with what I had been playing beforehand, but it was just short of 5 minutes long and that meant I could clear out for the next guy. And go to the bar.

I've got a giant mad-on for my town right now. I'll see if I can find a link to the atrocity they unveiled yesterday at city hall.

Huk-L, Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Someone brought in these delicious homemade treats today to my work. I can't remember what they're called but they taste a lot like butterscotch and they're the sort of brownie type things you'd get a church youthgroup meeting (but not Preacher Cookies).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Nick, what are bear claws?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:22 (twenty years ago)

they're like crab claws, only sweet! ;-)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Bear claws are beautiful.

xpost

Huk-L, Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Bear claws can be different things, but they are usually pastry with the texture of a croissant, but flatter, and it has some kind of cinnamony paste stuff inside and maybe a little frosting on top. I was going to eat one but then I looked at the nutritional information. 23% of your daily fat intake. :(

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Nick, why don't you split one with someone or just cut one in half anyway? We'll do lots of walking tonight!

Chris, that's such a bad stereotype of landscapers! When we lived in Virginia, there were these landscaping guys who worked out near my complex who would take their siestas in the lawn together. So you'd be driving by a huge office building and see 10 guys all sleeping on the ground in the middle of the day.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Butterscotch brownie-type things-Blondies, perhaps?
I think I am the only person in my workplace who hates Krispy Kreme. They are always sold out in the shop and the student union by about 10 am. They brought some in for my brithday and so I felt really bad and ate one. It was sickening.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Um that would be my birthday, not my brith-day.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

So, I have two articles on the front page of the today's Entertainment section (a record, my stuff is usually consigned to the third or fourth page, where it belongs) and they spelled my name wrong in the byline on one of them. MY NAME. It's not like they have my employment records to check or, say, the FOLDER that they took story from or the email I sent them letting them know where the article was OR the story right above it.
These trivial indignities, why is it they get my dander up so much, as opposed to my lack of a decent wage, benefits or holiday time?

Huk-L, Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:44 (twenty years ago)

To get the true Krispy Kreme experience, you have to go to one where they make them in the store and eat them while they are still warm. But if you aren't fond of VERY SWEET foods, they're never going to be your thing.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I associate Pimms with extreme-drunkenness-to-the-point-of-ridiculous-embarrassment and vomiting. College was such fun.

Blondies are great. Easy to make too.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago)

How do you mis-spell Horace?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

It's a policy, if you have more than one article, one of them goes under a "pen name".

Did I mention that I sold an awful 80s Willie Nelson album on Amazon for $26 recently? ("A Horse Named Music".) I never thought anyone would buy it at that price, but... there you go! Now I need to find some other ridiculous and awful out of print CD to list for far too much...

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Well, actually, I just got my pay stub and my name is spelled wrong there too. So, whatever. As long as the money comes in, they can call me Fanny Fartsalot for all I care.

Huk-L, Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Um, we can call you that too, right?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

So be it.

What the hell happened to everyone today?

So there's a very well-known comedian in town tonight, and I have a good chance of getting on the guest list, if I can only track down the club's manager at this late hour (i shoulda done it a week ago, I know), but I'm thinking I should go anyway, even if I have to pay $22. Am I right here? People? Is this thing on?

Huk-L, Thursday, 9 September 2004 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Moot point. Chicken shit bookers in this town (THIS TOWN, I TELL YOU, IT'S GOING TO THE DOGS!) cancelled a day ago. THANKS FOR TELLING ME, JERKS.
Great apartment be damned, the sooner I'm out of here, the sooner I'll be able to get on with my life. It's like, like I've broken up with Regina, but we still live together, y'know, and so we play these shitty little vindictive mindgames with each other. Like, I'll litter, and she'll burst a watermain on my busroute, making me late for work. We just need to see other people!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 10 September 2004 09:10 (twenty years ago)

no pies today, phew!

rainy (rainy), Friday, 10 September 2004 09:15 (twenty years ago)

A pie free day is a sad day!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 10 September 2004 09:16 (twenty years ago)

Not as sad as toilet overflowing day. (I really hope you didn't have to clean up sewage)

rainy (rainy), Friday, 10 September 2004 09:18 (twenty years ago)

Well it seemed to only be water, but from a health pov, it is classed as sewage. It was literally pouring into the kitchen, discovered only by me saying 'can you hear something dripping?' blimey! I've never seen so much water!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 10 September 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

You've probably never intentionally disconnected a live water pipe, thinking "it'll just spurt for second or two while I reconnect it", then :)

No pie for me today either. Possibly sushi or vegetarian Moroccan something-or-other with chick pease in it.

Yesterday, I FINALLY got the package from the bass player from my last band with the legendary cassette tape recording of our last show every, which I am supposed to transfer to cd. It's pretty funny. We talk for literally about five minutes, play one three minute song, talk for another five minutes, play one two minute song, and then talk for about 8 minutes (this time due to a broken string and retuning) before actually getting into our set. However, once I edit out the SIX HOURS of TERRIBLE PATTER, it should be pretty awesome. She also sent us the new cd by one of my favorite Virginia bands, VHS and the Babies, who despite the kinda shitty name, are a great great twee pop band and terrific people. Hooray for twee pop!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

i found "A Clockwork Orgy" last night. I think its plot closely follows the original, only using large-breasted chicks and assfucking in lieu of violence.

the opening shot is exactly the same, with only slightly more forced accents.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Nope.

The differences are slight.

For example, when the droogs find a bum, instead of taunting him and beating him up, they taunt him & then go down on him.

Slight.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:07 (twenty years ago)

so, the droogs are ladeez then?

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago)

it's true, most of the "futuristic" sets involved apartments/offices that looked _peculiarly_ like those you'd see in Southern California, except for the "street" scenes, which you could tell were all dystopian cuz they all took place in a junkyard with burning trash cans.

i think they spent the budget on the hats and the white bodysuits which had the _strangest_ way of getting ripped open at inopportune moments.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:33 (twenty years ago)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:37 (twenty years ago)

their version of the Aversion Therapy scene is to have the female lead be constrained by just a straightjacket in a darkened room. no eyelid porn here, please move along.

seriously, the plot FOLLOWS the original:
-scenes at the "KorovIa milk bar"
-the arrest, aversion therapy, and the aversion "testing"
-the "Alex is released back into society and has to cope" thing
-the wheelchair-bound author, who this time features a luxurious pony-tail/mullet and Billy Ray Cyrus facial scrubble
-the hospital "oh you've been cured, alex!" scene
-the final shot of the zoom in to Alex's eyes, where she deadpans "Oh, i was TREATED, all right..."

except that the poor thing has absolutely no idea how to deliver even this key line.

oh well.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Also, perhaps my increased ingestion of coffee and cigarettes are actually CONTRIBUTING to my constant anxiety, rather than relieving it.

It's certainly possible.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:44 (twenty years ago)

You should just review the Black Dice album instead but submit it under Black Keys. People would be like "Hey, what's Fat Possum doin' puttin' out minimalist squelchy electronic noise music? WHHHUUUHHHH?!?!?!!?" Eh? Eh?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:56 (twenty years ago)

200 words isn't very much! C'mon, you can do that in like 20 minutes.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm just so non-committal about music lately. It would help if I could figure out a good narrative hook or something.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Also, here's where I'm really blocking myself, I haven't been doing too many reviews lately, and the reviews boss hasn't been passing along too many review copies, it's a chicken and egg situation, but if I don't get this review in for this week, he'll start passing along EVEN LESS, which would be about none. Which would probably be a giant fucking relief.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry about a hook, just write a by-the-book descriptive cd review and get out of there. It won't be great, but it'll be at least decent and you'll stay in the loop with the editor (if that's what you want).

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm just stalling because I want to write something good, but I'm not going to. I should just huck-a-buckle down.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Fuck this. The section editor is still on holidays, so when the reviews boss (he's not an editor, he's just the guy who all the publicists think is the editor and the most senior music writer guy) gives me grief, I'll just say that I did too submit, but, oh, you know how it is when the people are on holiday....

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago)

This morning, there were these 2 guys at my el stop campaigning for Kerry. They were handing out pamphlets and trying to talk people into voting. These three teenage guys walked past me and they had said something rude to him, don't know what, and upset him so much that he was yelling, "I HOPE YOU AREN'T OLD ENOUGH TO GO TO WARRR!!!!" ANd this one guy in the middle is like, "I am! And I hope I go to war and die!" and laughed his ass off with his friends.

Anyway, feeling rather annoyed with the "kids these days...", I decided to take a Kerry sticker from the campaign guy. I put it on my jacket and wore it on my walk to work.

Just now, I decided to pull it off and I can't get the damn white sticky backing off my jacket! GRRRR!!!! I'm voting for Bush now.*

In my placement year from university, the software house I worked for (which was part of the university) had for its major client the Territorial Army - that's a UK part-time voluntary reserve army section. 600 bases around the UK used our system. We got regular calls from army officers about problems, and many of them were so used to having orders obeyed that they tried to talk to us that way. The most difficult one for me to talk to was at their head office, and was kind of in charge of their software, so called often. Marx Brothers fans will know why a call starting "This is Captain Spaulding" was hard for me to handle.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:14 (twenty years ago)

There's a big song number where Groucho is introduced, featuring the refrain "Hooray for Captain Spaulding, the African explorer!" It includes the classic gag "I once shot an elephant in my pyjamas. How he got into my pyjamas I'll never know."

Ugh, I had to break into my apartment this evening - my roommate locked me out and went away for the weekend. Good heavens man. We need more LA FAPs to save you from yourself.

Lately I've been listening to old Burns and Allen (radio) Shows, which are of course filled with that kind of silliness. It's terrific.

I am taking my mother to see Di4m4nd4 G4l4s next month. How many songs do you think I'll get through before my mom punches me in the head?
-- Je4nne ?ury (jeanne?ur...), September 10th, 2004. (later)

sorry but can we go back to this for a sec...so how come you're taking yr mom to see this?

I am passing up on two chances to see G4l4s for free this weekend. Feel free to make fun of me because of this.

aargh why?!

anyway she's my fave goth! here's some stuff on ilm for whoever wanted the info:

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Because I haven't liked anything I've heard by her? Because her work seems cheesy in its ubergothitude?

Anyway, last night was the Defixiones performance, or whatever, and Sunday night is the cover songs performance. I might still go to that, because some friends are going and because, you know, I can go for free and stuff.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Casuistry, you crazy man, she's a wonderful performer. I mock thee.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:43 (twenty years ago)

My stepfather was one of the NYPD cops who retired after working 12 hours a day, seven days a week, for several months, digging up all sorts of terrible looking things that used to be parts of people. Apparently he also found one of the airplane tires.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago)

I've been on AIM. Big whoop. Believe me, it's not like I'd suddenly turn into a wildly interesting conversationalist in an instantaneous setting.

Ah, so slow! *slaps forehead* We've had to endure huge, noisy de-humidifiers all w/e to try to dry out our flood! Parts of the carpets are missing & we couldnt go into the house for 2 hours after they treated the carpets affected. Tomorrow the assessor guy comes out. Prob is, me & james both feel really guilty, for what I dont know. It does on paper look like we've forged the claim cos we've only just moved in, but I have to say, pouring a load of toilet water into my kitchen would not be my first thought!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago)

But I can't leave it in my desk, for similar reasons!

Hi guys. Please, someone, anyone, save me from myself. Please. I either need the most kickass thing to happen to me because of who I am, or I need to figure out how to change in such a way that kickass things start to happen to me.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Like, if someone has any suggestions on how to purge this whole fandom thing from my system, please, let me know. Because my fandom is offering me nothing but frustration and disappointment, and I'm truly digusted with myself for being so much into it that I've neglected the rest of who I am. And I apologize from the bottom of my heart for foisting it upon you guys.

I now realize the need for a new ILX nickname.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 06:51 (twenty years ago)

Just walk away. You can if you want to. Oh, you'll always have memories, and it'll be there and you'll still get a slight glow from it. But, sad to say, it won't miss you. And you won't really miss it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe you need to be content without kick ass things happening. Just a thought.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Just walk away. You can if you want to. Oh, you'll always have memories, and it'll be there and you'll still get a slight glow from it. But, sad to say, it won't miss you. And you won't really miss it.

Oh God, I wish I could quantify for you how hard I've been trying to work toward this goal since I started to post here last April. I have tried so very hard to just "walk away", by immersing myself in other things, other concerns, other things to go crazy over. But every time I think I've conquered it, it comes back.

Or maybe you need to be content without kick ass things happening. Just a thought.

You mean, live life the way I've lived it for the past 24 years or so?

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 06:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh God, I'm antagonizing you two now. Argh.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 06:59 (twenty years ago)

You don't need to be content without kick-ass things happening, that's silly. You might have to discover your own meaning of "kick-ass", but I suspect you already have.

I don't think posting here is going to help you stop being fannish, though!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:04 (twenty years ago)

It sounds like you are anything but content.
If you want things to happen, then take steps to make them happen. Don't limit yourself.
What kind of things do you want to happen?

Chris you think Buddhism is silly, then? I have mixed feelings about it myself.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:08 (twenty years ago)

But I think needing kick ass things to happen in order to be happy is not only silly but unhealthy and unrealistic.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:09 (twenty years ago)

That seems like an oversimplification of Buddhism, but whatever. I also don't particularly believe in "happy".

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:16 (twenty years ago)

I didn't mean to infer it encompassed the entire teachings of Buddhism, but that's part of it.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:24 (twenty years ago)

The Fake Fictions website has been redesigned again. It's pink now.
Thank you!
Aww Dee, the only advice I can offer is when you want to go onto one of these sites, just email one of us. Hey, it might work lady! I'm around if you fancy a chat!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't think posting here is going to help you stop being fannish, though!

Well, it's not so much the act of posting here that I thought would help me at least lessen the potency of the fanhood, so much as it was the idea that I'd get exposed to so many "new to me" things that I'd end up funneling all the energy and passion I'd held for The Band That Shall Not Be Named into various other things. But then I got tired of feeling like an idiot, going "I didn't know that" or "I have never heard of [x] in my entire life" (and feeling that I was the only person around here never to have heard of or experienced certain things) and that idea collapsed.

oops, I suppose "having kickass things happen" was limiting on my part. I would be content with things just changing in my life, because I seem to be experiencing a repeat of the same thing happening over and over in my life. Though obv I'd hate for things to change for the negative.

Like, I'm always searching for a place, either offline or online, where I feel like I'm so similar to everyone else there that I can comfortably discuss all manner of things without feeling like I'm earning myself new enemies or antagonists every time I express something. Obv this forum, with its seemingly inherent distrust of religion, its super-liberalism, and its incredibly relaxed moral attitude, has not been a solution to that. I'm not being judgemental here -- I never seek to judge, esp when this forum has shown me that people who behave in a manner I'd been taught was "immoral" or at the very least counterproductive to living a, well, productive life were actually quite "moral" people who also contributed highly to society.

But I'd like to be able to discuss what's going on in my faith life, for example, with others who can come back with what's going on in their own faith lives, and maybe then I can express some of the doubts and disappointments that come my way without feeling as though I'm contributing more ammo to those who would seek to destroy the foundation that my beliefs were built upon. And I'd love to find a place full of people who are similarly intelligent and knowledgable to this forum whom I can also discuss fannish matters with and maybe even also learn a few things in that regard.

Pink, thank you for your generous offer. I think I just might do that.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:35 (twenty years ago)

I know what you mean hun! Sometimes I don't even bother expressing an opinion on here as there are always about 10 different ppl that will try to shoot you down in flames, so to speak. Don't ever feel ashamed of your faith. It takes more courage to stand by your beliefs. Apart from ILX, I am active on another forum which is a specific forum (not like ILX) where I sometimes prefer to hang out as it's not some intellectual battle of who's got more degrees, who has read what or how many vip tickets you can get. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slagging off ILX at all, just saying we all feel like this at times. If you do learn something from ILX, consider yourself lucky, DO NOT think any less of yourself for not knowing it in the first place. If you already knew everything, damn the world would be pretty dull! I know I say this to you all of the time, but you really shouldn't be so hard on yourself. You have as much to bring to ILX as anyone else. Not everyone on ILX is super intelligent or super whatever, just try not to stress about it so much.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:46 (twenty years ago)

ILX is a big, pulsating brain. I'm not sure what I mean by this, I'm just being weird.

Pink, What colors are in your new house? Have you painted?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Dee, I'm gonna post something Freaky Trigger Tom posted to I Love Comics. It doesn't directly relate, but it made me feel better about liking stuff that other people might look down on.

Comics are like pop music in that I can consume them very quickly. So it's fairly easy for me to recoup the entertainment/time lost consuming a memorably awful comic/song by having fun talking about it. I suppose I don't take the comics medium 'seriously'. I enjoy reading non-mainstream comics, I think they're usually 'better' than superhero stuff, but discussing them rarely interests me. (This is why I felt guilty about starting so many mainstream threads). Pulpy genre comics tend to have the ludicrosity and gall that gets me going.

-- Tom (freakytrigge...), September 13th, 2004.

Last night, when I went out to pick up my sweet & sour pork, there was a guy taking a leak against the front of my building. He sort of stopped when I came out and then when he saw that he was a lot bigger me (though I don't imagine there are a lot of people he's NOT bigger than--and I'm talking about body size, you perverts) he just resumed pissing. I was going to say something, but what do you say? "Hey, I really wish you weren't peeing on my house!"

Huk-L, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I just spent maybe 10 minutes trying to formulate how I was going to respond to you, Dee, when suddenly I had one of those moments when you realize that the problem that you're trying to figure out might not be the real problem at all. Because, you know, if your biggest problem is that you've only heard of 500 bands rather than 50,000 (or whatever), well, clearly things are going all right for you.

Also, if you start talking about what's going on in your faith life -- you know, as longa s you accept that a few people on the boards are going to be jerks about it, and that most people will come from an entirely different perspective, then you might get some useful conversation out of it. There are some threads that Anthony started back in the day where he was exploring his faith that left many people baffled but still started some good conversation. And there are people on the boards who have some religious sentiment, even if they maybe don't talk about it often.

Although I can understand not wanting to talk about certain things in a public forum, especially one as potentially judgmental as ILX. If you ever want to IM me and talk about stuff, feel free (although due to this arts festival that I'm attending, I probably won't be online much until after this weekend).

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago)

All of what Pink and Chris said, Dee. (Except the bit about the arts festival, I'm not attending one of those I don't think.) There are things that are really important to my life that I wouldn't bring up on ILX, but hey, that is a limitation of the forum not of me. That said, I would be happy to hear about your faith life and the experiences of others too. But maybe there just aren't enough non-asshat people on ILX for you to feel able to talk about it comfortably. As you certainly know already, ILX is not the whole interweb and it's certainly no very reliable microcosm of the 'real' world. I think you'll be just fine, dude.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, people are funny. I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with one of our host families trying to spell out an address in Japan for him. It was hard as he didn't know what an apostrophe was and wrote down 'i' as '1' each time... but we got there in the end. But then he called me back and said he wasn't confident enough he'd written it down right and could he come onto campus and meet me so I could give it to him in person. I had to say yes really...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago)

My friend emailed me to let me know that there's a tropical depression brewing somewhere in the tropics and if it turns into a hurricaine, they're going to name it Jeanne. My friend let me know that said storm is headed right towards the Virgin Islands. This amuses me to no end.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Haha. Lock up yr daughters, Jeanne's on her way :)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Rrrowr!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Like, I'm always searching for a place, either offline or online, where I feel like I'm so similar to everyone else there that I can comfortably discuss all manner of things without feeling like I'm earning myself new enemies or antagonists every time I express something

You don't need to be similar to anyone - you are who you are for a reason. Also, as Chris said, if you want to start threads about your faith, then start them. Sure, there are people who will be jerks - but that's the same anywhere you go and with anything you do. Ignore them - none of them, none of it, matters at all - no one can change your faith, no one can change how you feel about something unless you let them. You are a strong woman, Dee - whether or not it always feels like it. You have the power to change your life, you have the power to stand up for yourself and what you believe in - and that's part of what makes you so special. You may not see it, but I do, and I'll remind you all the time if it'll help.

You are a strong, beautiful, kickass woman, sweetie - you just need to have a little... faith.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I read that as "Also, as CHRIST said..."

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Me too! I just didn't want to be the only one. We're in a club now, Jeanne. YOU and ME. 4-ever.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:29 (twenty years ago)

And Jesus spoke unto them, 'let there be threads!' and there were threads.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

It's fashion week here in nyc. I work two blocks from the madness. I read the other day in the Post how Naomi Campbell threw a royal diva fit. It made me so angry that I could've bitch slapped her tongue out. YOU. DO. NOTHING. You had absolutely no contribution to your genetic make-up, which is the entire BASIS OF YOUR CAREER AND SUBSEQUENT LIFE. I can NOT fucking stand these supermodel douche bags with their hideous entitlement issues and ego outbursts. Not that I can't appreciate a thing of beauty. I can. I love a beautiful face and body. But being a spoiled, rotten, massively overpaid psycho is hardly beautiful.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm being spoiled because I got a new task chair at work! It feels so great on my back. See, two of my coworkers had gotten them and said, hey, I'd bet they'd approve for you to get one too. But I sit out in the open, so everyone has seen it today and now they are all jumping up and down saying, "I want one too! Why can't I have one?" So now, everyone's getting one.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago)

A coworker just came and stood facing away from, but behind me. Then he farted and walked away. It stinks over here. I'm going home.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. My friend used to work for a construction company while he was in college. The construction guys used to have their feet up on the desks and yell over to him in these thick Brooklyn accents: "Hey college boy, I'm blowin' you a kiss." And then fart. My friend quit the job. He couldn't take it.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Isn't that The Sum Of Canadian Humour, Huck?

I fucking hate people farting and appearing proud of it. I bet that's what Naomi Campbell does.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago)

I just do what I can, you know?

Jesus (Chris Piuma), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Huck, maybe you need to start wearing "wacky" hats?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Do wacky hats prevent people from farting and peeing in my general direction?

Funny you should mention "wacky", last week I managed to use both "wacky" and "zany" in ONE of my movie capsule blurbs that I no longer have do since last week. Apparantly, the editor thinks Vanity Fair is neither.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:25 (twenty years ago)

i had another job interview this morning, at a place about 15 blocks away in this little arty district on Alberta.

They just called me back and they want to meet me tomorrow for lunch.

Also, is it a good sign when your interviewer programs your number into his cell so he can remember to call you back that day?

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago)

It's a good sign when he says "you're hired". Other than that, signs are pretty hit-or-miss.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:31 (twenty years ago)

It's an even better sign when you get that first paycheck.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Better than that is when it doesn't bounce.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

When you get that 35 year watch, you know the job's as good as yours.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Oo, something arrived in the mail today! Par avion!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Someone's hair has gotten long!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:23 (twenty years ago)

I realized, after I mailed it, that a clipping of the review might've been something that you actually would have WANTED. Ha ha. Silly me. The book is not great, but it tries and it's one of the modern day SK novels.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:30 (twenty years ago)

Hey, yeah, I thought you were going to send me a copy of the magazine! Oh well.

Are you still near the fax machine? You could fax it to me on Thursday...

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago)

I lost my wallet! WTF!

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:45 (twenty years ago)

You could buy another wallet, but your wallet could never buy another Jeremy. So let's have some perspective here, eh?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:48 (twenty years ago)

Are you sure? Where did you see it last?

Laura E (laurae55), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:58 (twenty years ago)

In the gym, and it had 11 dollars in it.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:59 (twenty years ago)

Is it too much to hope that it might still be there if you return?

Laura E (laurae55), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:08 (twenty years ago)

hmm... 50/50.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:08 (twenty years ago)

Pink, What colors are in your new house? Have you painted?
The flood has set us back a bit to be honest Sarah, but we do have the nicest colour for our lounge & dining room (they're gonna be the same) it's called biscotti & it's a creamy colour. When the kittens have stopped climbing the curtains, we are going to get chocolate brown ones & then at some point a choclate brown sofa. We've got this gorgeous rug which is browns & creams, very cool. So that's the theme for some of the downstairs, but we cannot think of what colour to do the bedroom. Any ideas?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:04 (twenty years ago)

JeAnne, that's great!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:04 (twenty years ago)

I really should be asleep, but I felt compelled to state that this is just about the best grouping of individuals here on The Forum, period. End of story. Chris, oops, Pink, Sarah, Huck, Archel, luna, and everyone else, I send to you hugs and radiating waves of love and appreciation and thanks. Chris, I'm currently experiencing other, perhaps more complex and serious problems, but since they have nothing at all to do with things of a social nature, I feel they're not worth posting about here. luna, thank you for the words of inspiration. Archel and Pink, you are once again two of the sweetest people out there on the planet. Sarah, thanks for that seeming nonsequitir. It made sense to me. oops, thanks for beating me over the head with a sensibility stick. Huck, after reading that quote several times in a row, it started to seem quite applicable to my situation, so thanks.

As a thank you, I invite any and all of you who wish to have a temporary pillar to lean on when times get rough for YOU to fire off an e-mail to me. I will be there for you, no matter what. Oh, and I'll stop struggling to be someone I was never meant to be. I'll embrace everything about me that is genuinely ME and simply strive to improve upon that. I will make this promise to you. And I hope that if I exhibit signs of veering away from that course, you too will beat me over the head with a sensibility stick.

(I'll read the rest of the thread ASAP.) (Good night.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:24 (twenty years ago)

*grins at Dee*

I have nothing to say this morning except for an excited *squeak* that I can now show people what the cover of my book looks like:
http://www.haynes.34sp.com/Frogmore/titles/images/three_voices.gif

As you were.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh yay archel! Can you let me know how/where I can buy one purrlease!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh of course you have seen the cover already IN DA FLESH Pink :)

You can buy off Amazon at http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0953138348/qid%3D1089215785/202-9094069-0602251 or from the publisher at www.frogmorepress.co.uk by printing out the order form (click on 'titles in print'). Or, I will try and send/bring you one next time I can get hold of some copies. But don't feel obliged to buy it!

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I don't feel obliged at all darl, I just liked what I read & you know James did too! (he wasn't just drunk you know!)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Good morning, campers. Some guy talked down to me this morning at work about the dumbest thing. I got an email from one of vendors with their contact numbers. They asked that I forward it on to the sales manager and president of the company. I work in this really small office, less than 10 people, so I simply forwarded it to our main email addy and asked that it be passed on to everyone. That didn't happen. B-but the vp is supposed to check that! GRRR...

In happier news, it's break time.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Hey everybody. I'm in a foul mood today for too many reasons to bother trying to list. It would only make my mood fouler. But last night American Psycho was on TV and I stayed up until just after 3 watching it. I saw right up to where he calls his lawyer, and then I just couldn't stay up, I gave in to slumber. I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.
And yes, fatigue is an aggravating factor in my surlitude.
I'm gonna go take a extra-sized smoke break. I hate smoking. I love smoking.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Hooray for breaktime & boo for co-workers that suXor!
x-post
Huck - would a hug help? ;-)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Work is dumb.
I just found out there's a little publishing company in the building where I work. Would it be weird if I dropped by there to hand them my resume personally and introduce myself?
I just spent a half-hour of work time illicitly making a flier for the Fake Fictions show next week. Yay me.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Huck - would a hug help? ;-)
This was a sarcastic remark designed to make you chuckle Huck!! hope you are ok dude!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:20 (twenty years ago)

i'm in a boring ass training session and all the computers are fucking up so it's taking hella long and i only got 3 hours sleep and i know in an hour or so i'm gonna hit my head on the keyboard while i pass out and oooh there's some donuts over there...

OOOOPS, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it would be weird nick. Someone did that in one of my old workplaces IIRC and within a month or so they were going in a different door... which WAS weird but only for the rest of us left behind at Hell Inc.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Go for it, Nick! Or at the least, find their website and see if they have any job openings posted. You can learn more about them that way too.

I love the cover, Archel! Yay!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Don't sweat it nick, just do it. I got a job at a place that was in the same building as the one i was currently at!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Do it Nick. They're not going to come looking for you. Well, they might, if you steal their mail, but otherwise...

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:47 (twenty years ago)

OK. Well I can't do it today, because I don't have a copy of my resume with me and I need a haircut, but maybe later this week.

Hey, Huck, can you write a promo sheet for the Fake Fictions? Ok thanks bye.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Nick, email me.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Suddenly, my day threatens to turn around. I was just invited to a party. BY PHONE. Because I don't have a corporate email account. Which nobody knows but me and now the guy who used to work here who's having a party on Saturday. But what do the Rules say about accepting a Saturday date on Wednesday? Does this make me a slut?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I just read the thread title about bendy busses as "What's wrong with bendy pussies?" Someone please shoot me.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Boingy boingy boingy.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago)

You could always just answer what you thought the thread asked, Jeanne?

(Incidentally, someone was saying that your tropical depression was called "Gene". You should BEAT THEM DOWN)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

WTF?? IT'S J-E-A-N-N-E. They're even spelling it right, for chrissake. And today, Tropical Storm Jeanne is "battering Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands." I resent the implication that I batter virgins. Hear ye, hear ye -- Virgins, you are safe with me! Whores, you, too are safe with me!

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's in alphabetical order, schmucks!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Sorry! I realized it must be a J storm after thinking it was Gene. I just really wanted Hurricane Gene, okay?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Maybe if it gets down to M you can have a "Mean Gene"!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago)

no then i'd want Mortimer.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago)

You're impossible to please.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Does this make me a slut?

No sug, that's not what does it.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago)

So do y'all ever tell people about ILe? 'Cause I usually don't, only last night I did, and then realized 'oh jesus fuck, do I really want my collected ramblings here to be a representation of who I am?' and then realized um, yeah, hi stupid, they already are. Then I thought, 'well, I guess I'll just have to watch what I post from now on,' which was okay until I realized that I am far, far too lazy to do this, and anyway, I couldn't fool my own mother on the foolingest day of my life with an electrified fooling machine.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I think ILX could use some new blood.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't fool my own mother on the foolingest day of my life with an electrified fooling machine. HA!

Doesn't a cranberry orange muffin sound like it should be relatively healthy? Well, it's not. So don't eat (the one at Starbucks), unless you're into that sort of thing. (I've been looking at the calories online thanks to the diet thread)

x-post - Do you mean like college freshmen?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

the server won't let me search right now, so i'll post this here. I think it's kinda neat that Mike Patton(ex-FNM, Mr bungle, Tomahawk, etc) is working on a soundtrack for Rockstar Games, the Grand Theft Auto folks.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I just had a somewhat flirty interview with yet another West Coast singer.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Hey Luna, I think your friend showed up!
where i get a gun

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

If I mention ILE in conversation, I always make it very vague and never give the exact name or address.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Mmm, fresh blood.

Sarah, muffins are Fatty McFatsalots and they have a lot of fat in them to boost. This is why we like them.

Huck, did I flirt that much?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

yet another West Coast singer.

post hot pix, plz

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago)

B-but, Chris! They have cranberries and oranges in them!?

I am bored to tears at work. It's time for my lunch break, but I've already eaten at my desk, I finished reading the book I brought on the way to work, and I've already done a lot of walking today. B O R I N G...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Cranberries and oranges are good.

I baked biscotti this morning, but I'm not sure it came out great. They're cooling.

Also, "American Elf" and "Saskatchewan: The Roots Of Discontent And Protest" arrived today! Rock rock on!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago)

What does it matter if the biscotti is not so hot, you're just going to smother it in ketchup.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Or, in this case, coffee.

My god, I am so going to eat 30 biscotti right now. This is very, very wrong.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I think it wasn't so much that my friend has an interest in posting (though he may), as much as it is that he wanted to know what left turns my mind takes. I didn't want to give up the name, but he wore me down.

It ain't no thang.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

On the one hand, who wouldn't read your postings here and find you to be a great person? On the other hand, it creates a significant information gap -- he can find out a lot more about you than you do about him.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Tell him your login name is A-j-a.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

See, there's definitely that aspect (though I'd be willing to tell someone anything I've said here, memory permitting), but also that my postings here aren't necessarily representative of who I *really* am.

Except I guess there are. Damn.

All I can say is that I wish there was a delete function so I could delete one or two of the threads I've started and then I would be a-ok.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

What?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Why is my freelance cheque so small? I though I had a big month in August? I need to check my files.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, it appears that after the 16th, I didn't do anything again until the 28th! I need check someone else's files. Someone who's organized.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

i haven't really held back much in regards to what i post here - as a result i'm terrified of anyone i know tracking me down here.

i think you'll be okay tho, luna. you seem to be one of the "normal" ones around here.

dysøn (dyson), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Yup, what I thought was a busy month was actually just a busy week. I made nearly all my money the week of the 12th. I think I'm already past last month's total. Shit. I was hoping for a windfall.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I see it now. It's the stuff I do for free that I was busy with all month. Fuck me. No, wait, fuck the people I do free work for. What am I, the United Way?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh, so how's that Fake Fictions promo comin', Huck?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Did I mention we're not paying you?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

It's like getting to be a roadie.

You know, I'm sacrificing so much for this band by playing a show on the night of the Amazing Race finale.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I missed both Last Comic Standing AND Amazing Race last night and I didn't tape them like I usually would. Fuck me. No really. I'm sick of this shit. I should liquidate my possessions and buy a one-way ticket somewhere.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I just ate baby yogurt and now am eating a tootsie pop. Earlier I had a juice box. I think I'm reverting to my natural 5 year old state.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

(Baby yogurt, if you're wondering, is full fat yogurt designed for babies in teeny weeny little cups like the size wot you would feed an actual baby).

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! I hate myself! I just agreed to expand my radio show by an hour EVERY WEEK (starting in Oct). Ha ha ha! That'll show me!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Damn I was hoping baby yogurt:normal yogurt was like veal:beef.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I saw a bit of Last Comic Standing last night because I was bored and I thought Scrubs was supposed to be on after that (not so! grr). It wasn't that great, IMO, if that makes you feel better, Huck.

I tend to be all vague about ILX too, not that I ever post anything particularly scandalous.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:29 (twenty years ago)

?
I saw the end of Scrubs last night. I think maybe it came on at 8:30, because it was right before Amazing Race.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Scrubs is a show that I'm always glad I see, but never plan on it.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I thought it was on at 8, it was listed as such! Damn. That was probably the premiere too. I don't go out of my way to watch it, but I do like that show...one of few comedies that's actually funny.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I feel weird about Scrubs. It makes me laugh a lot, and that should be all the matters, but a lot of its self-conscious schtick is very annoying to me. Plus, c'mon, Heather Graham and that girl from American Pie? PLEASE.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I like the way all of the men are good-looking, but in a non-threatening way.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago)

since i have plugged my tv back in to follow the WAR and ELECTION BS i have watched Scrubs, i dig it. also: GILLMORE GIRLS.

kephm, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen the Gilmore Girls - mainly because I never remember when anything is on; sometimes I get tired of dramas about women (that was the sound of my Oxygen channel being revoked - like I care); and I can't get past the fact that the chick who plays the mother used to be the psycho girlfriend on Caroline in the City.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago)

yeah i never watched Caroline. GGirls just reminds me of Northern Exposure in some ways. a guilty pleasure for sure

kephm, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I loved Northern Exposure - and not just because Janine Turner was hawt.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:46 (twenty years ago)

The mom from Gilmore Girls was on the Seinfeld I saw the other day. She was the girlfriend who moved Jerry up and down on her speed dial depending on how happy she was with him.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago)

sure sure.

i liked Ed quite a bit.

kephm, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I have a migraine and I just hit myself in the cheekbone with the phone receiver.

The two are not related.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Ed was cool, and Chris was all kinds of hot.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago)

IS the cheekbone another funny bone? I don't think I've ever hit mine.

I really enjoy scrubs. *sigh*

What girl from American Pie? Do you mean to say guy from Can't Hardly Wait and Clueless, Nick?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Luna, you're on fire today :) Are you feeling okay? (those two sentences, also, are not related!)

I've just done house-preparing things for the return of my beloved - it really does look quite nice when it's (sort of) clean and (almost) tidy. I just wish she'd send me an email cos I haven't got one for days :(

Heather Graham is in Scrubs! Rad!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Whatserface from Drew Carey is also hot on Scrubs. I like the mean doctor.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago)

I always thought Chris from Northern Exposure was really hot, and then years later it turned out that he dated a girl I went to elementary school with, I just happened upon the info in some silly gossip pages somewhere. Strange.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:00 (twenty years ago)

No, I meant Mena Suvari, who was guesting for a while.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I liked Scrubs. My friend Simon is a lot like JD.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

You guys need to get an emergency services scanner. It picks up the weirdest thing. There's some lady on there right now talking about all the people her friend fucked. "Then she met this guy down the street, she fucked him. Then she met this other guy, he wasn't very good, and she didn't really like him, but she fucked him too."

It's bizarre. I don't know if it's someone's cell phone or what, but it's obviously someone who thinks they're having a private conversation.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

So huck, you are a comic, you interview bands, and you have a radio show. In what ways is your life not ideal?

(in reality, this is 18-year-old Mark speaking, but still, it sounds way sweet)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, and I have a really great comic collection.
I do have a lot of fun, thanks for spinning that back on me, Mark.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I meant comic books, in case anyone thought for a moment that I have Shecky Greene's head in a jar.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Dear abby, dear abby ...
My feet are too long
My hair’s falling out and my rights are all wrong
My friends they all tell me that I’ve no friends at all
Won’t you write me a letter, won’t you give me a call
Signed, bewildered

Bewildered, bewildered,
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain’t what you ain’t
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood

Dear abby, dear abby...
My fountain pen leaks
My wife hollers at me and my kids are all freaks
Every side I get up on is the wrong side of bed
If it weren’t so expensive I’d wish I were dead
Signed unhappy

Unhappy, unhappy,
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain’t what you ain’t
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood

Dear abby, dear abby...
You won’t believe this
But my stomach makes noises whenever I kiss
My girlfriend tells me it’s all in my head
But my stomach tells me to write you instead
Signed noise-maker

Noise-maker, noise-maker,
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain’t what you ain’t
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood
Dear abby, dear abby...
Well I never thought
That me and my girlfriend would ever get caught
We were sitting in the back seat just shooting the breeze
With her hair up in curlers and her pants to her knees
Signed just married

Just married, just married...
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain’t what you ain’t
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood
Signed, Dear Abby

just got back lunch with the guys who interviewed me yesterday. they actually said, "we'll be calling you back either later today or tomorrow. we want to put something together for you" which i will take as a positive.

now, i'm off to a second interview at the lower-paying job in the southern suburbs...

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Did you foot the lunchbill?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Good news: I'm done work for the day.
Bad news: It's thunderstorming.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:06 (twenty years ago)

And hail too.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:07 (twenty years ago)

hell no i didn't fit no bill.

i did get an offer from the other company tho. but it's a 20+ minute drive south(as opposed to 15+ blocks), the company is still in start-up mode, i'd only be making $8/hr with no benefits, but with a per- file bonus.

on the plus side, i'd undoubtedly improve my spanish, as most of hte office is hispanic.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago)

in other news, now that i've left, the main bar in ann arbor is having great shows again. Bob Mould, The Misfits, Agent Orange, Yo La Tengo, the Fiery Furnaces et al are playing.

i'll guess i'll have to make do with living in one of the major west coast stopping points for any indie tour. oh well.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago)

John Prine is nice, but I might like Jake Thackeray better.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't know this Jake Thackeray. I must investigate. I grew up listening to JP, he's one of my dad's favourites, and I'm a sentimental sap, so like double whatever objective value JP has.

Have you listen to the JM & HD disc? It's weirdy-weirdo stuff, he's done a lot of music for theatre in T.O. and I like him a lot. I thought, I don't know, I thought you'd get a kick out of him.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Only British people know Jake Thackeray. I didn't know either Prine or Thackeray until a few years ago and a few months ago, respectively.

I have the two-disc Prine anthology -- I like the early songs but halfway through the first disc it all gets samey for me. Are there later highlights I should look for?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm forever partial to the first two albums, the self-titled and Diamonds in the Rough. After that, before he sort of rubbed out in the 80s, the albums seem to blur together with slight production variations (and even the first two albums are v. similar). I've been listening to Common Sense, just because it's still in the CD player. It's the one he did in Memphis, the Stax one. I think he did a Sun one too, Bruised Oranges maybe? I liked Jesus the Missing Years, his early 90s comeback album, and he's good live again. I don't know if he quit drinking, but my dad saw him a few times in the early 80s when he was barely able to stand up.
I'm really into the sound of this album and I wish I had more stuff that sounded like that, like sort of mid-to-late 70s countrypolitan almost, cuz I'd play a lot of it on my show tonight. (that was a plug)
I guess I should start programming to avoid another panic. Any requests?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I might actually be listening tonight! At least for the beginning. So. Play stuff from before 1942!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago)

You like Emmett Miller?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Miller? I hardly know her!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Holy Shit! The new Willie Nelson album (another shitty live USA Network special) has "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" with Willie, Jerry Lee, Keith Richards, Merle Haggard, and uh, Kid Rock. It sounds like yr average allstar wank. Christ, what's it gonna take for Willie to just write some fucking songs? YOU HEAR ME, NELSON?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I'm listening to the Fake Fictions! I like it. "Go Get 'Em Tiger!" Is that you singing, Sarah? "Summertime" Yeah! It's loose, it's gonna fall apart! But it doesn't! I can shake my ass to it, that's for sure. Actually, what I do is sort of strut my shoulders and purse my lips. I'm a dork. But this is cool. Woo hoo. Good job TITWISers!

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago)

That was, like, your best show yet, -L!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 16 September 2004 02:04 (twenty years ago)

I just got back from a party with a bunch of the 20-something actors from the cast of Mean Girls, and - Jesus - are they aptly named.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 16 September 2004 04:56 (twenty years ago)

i found out tonight that it's only a 25 minute walk home from my new fave bar, and that includes stopping in at Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 16 September 2004 06:18 (twenty years ago)

I found out last night that my mum has to have a lump removed from her breast. They are not sure what it is yet. I'm not sure how I feel about this. :-(

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 07:02 (twenty years ago)

Oh no! Hope she will be ok Pink. My mum and a work friend have both had lumps removed and they were both benign - i guess it is a common thing among that age group (assuming your mum is around the same age as mine) and usually nothing to worry about. Hugs to both of you - when is the surgery happening?

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 16 September 2004 07:55 (twenty years ago)

thanks Arch. Not really sure when, she will get the test results back next friday & the surgery will be done asap after that. I'm sure it will be fine, but it's just the wider implications of the worst case scenario that are buzzing round my head.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 08:00 (twenty years ago)

I know how you feel. I had to see my doctor myself a few years ago about something similar and I literally didn't sleep for a week. It doesn't matter how small the odds are, the spectre of cancer is just such a terrifying one. We can't NOT be worried about it, but most of the time we really don't need to be. It's good that your mum's been tested and will have it sorted out very soon.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 16 September 2004 08:09 (twenty years ago)

I hope so. thanks.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 08:16 (twenty years ago)

Sending lots of love your way, sugar - I hope your mom is ok, too.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Thanks darlin! Now what are you doing still awake huh??

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:29 (twenty years ago)

I posted this on the other thread, I meant to do it here, and since I am upset and feeling redundant, here it is.

I have pink. hair.

It was blonde, and the roots were growing out, and I was awake, so I thought ok, I'll fix this, forgetting the CARDINAL RULE OF HAIR DYE, to wit: over the counter blonde dye turns dark roots red. Or in my case, orange.

No problem, she thinks, I can fix this, I wanted to go red anyway.

Apparently I bought the wrong one. It was 2 am, it happens. No problem, thinks I, it's a little brighter than I wanted, but that's okay, it might be fun, I'll use it anyway, forgetting YET ANOTHER CARDINAL RULE OF HAIR COLOR, which is that anything you put on blonde will be DARKER BECAUSE BLONDE IS PALE, YOU DUMBASS.

I. HAVE. PINK. HAIR.

Going to work today, Aimee? Oh, I think not. Perhaps not ever again.

PINK. HAIR.

AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY.

If anyone needs me, I will be under my bed crying for the rest of my life.

This: http://www.westburypharmacy.com/Merchant2/mivagraphics/bergen/324327.jpg

plus champagne blonde EQUALS PINK! PINK! HOLY FUCK, MY HAIR IS PINK!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:48 (twenty years ago)

It says deep RED, not PINK!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:51 (twenty years ago)

There should be a warning for stupid people!

"Attention moron, you know who you are: May cause hair to become magenta. Don't be an asshat, get the chick who usually colors your hair to color it this time, too. PUT THE BOX DOWN, PINHEAD. DOWN. I SAID PUT IT DOWN, WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?"

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh no luna! Still, there is nothing inherently WRONG with pink hair...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:54 (twenty years ago)

Pink hair isn't all that bad surely!! Can you post a pic??

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Nope, I almost wish I could, but I'm glad I can't.

IF I WERE A GOTH, I WOULD BE SO FUCKING COOL RIGHT NOW.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:59 (twenty years ago)

The one on the bottom right is VERY CLOSE.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Bottom right one is red right? oh did you mean bottom left?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:15 (twenty years ago)

No, bottom right - it's that bright pinky sort of red. I am in hell.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:17 (twenty years ago)

Ah that's not so bad lady, I'm sure you'll rock it beautifully!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:17 (twenty years ago)

PLEASE take a pic or three. this sounds so hot...

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Too late - I sent out the troops to get dark red, and it is currently on my hair right now. (It sort of burns, this cannot be good).

Either it will work or all my hair will fall out.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:32 (twenty years ago)

still take pics!

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:34 (twenty years ago)

in worse news, Johnny Ramone died last night. Rest in peace.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:34 (twenty years ago)

I've just heard a story on the radio about 3 young lads, kicking a lab puppy around a park like a football. It was blind & brain damaged as a result & had to be put down. I am stunned that ppl could actually do this.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry about your mum, Pink: good luck.

Luna, I'm sure you are still breathtakingly lovely even with a comedy hair colour. We need photos!

I like Jake Thackeray, but Prine wins for writing Sam Stone, a really great song. The cover by Swamp Dogg (with whom I used to be in a Yahoo group) is among my favourite records - really heartbreaking.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Martin. How are you doing today?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:04 (twenty years ago)

People can be so spectacularly assholish. It's sad to hear.

I hope your mom's okay, Pink. My mom's had several cysts removed that all turned out to be benign, but they still freaked her out, seeing that such things are inherently a bit freaky. My dad just had surgery a couple of days ago on his hand--there was some sort of growth, apparently, that was starting to interfere with his thumb joint. My parents didn't tell me til a couple of days before, and I didn't really know how to process it anyway because they never tell me about these potentially-big health things til the last minute, and then they always end up being fine. The surgery went great I guess and his hand will be good as new and all that, with time.

What am I saying--no idea, really, but something along the lines of...it's all kind of intense when these these things come up, and natural to worry about your parents. I hope that your mom's cyst turns out benigh, Pink.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Me too, Pink, and it almost certainly will. Good luck to your mum and I hope you're okay.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Thanks guys. It means alot to me. It's just always really scary when your parents have health scares. (big hugs bryan) Still, I am hoping & praying that everything will be ok.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Not good today, I'm afraid. I think the new tranquiliser pills are doing more harm than good. I feel really nauseous after taking them, for ages, so can't sleep - the when I try to get up I feel tranquilised, slow and tired and slurring words. I didn't make it to work again, and I don't think I'll feel up to going out for Rob's birthday thing tonight. I think I'll skip that pill tonight, see if it helps.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Aww Martin, I'm sorry. Hope it does work - you've been really vibrant lately, despite your condition.

I hope no-one minds me talking about

MY NEW SHOES!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:18 (twenty years ago)

They're nice mark!
Sorry to hear that martin. Perhaps the new pills take some getting used to & will settle down?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Pink, Be strong for your mom. She will probably be fine. My mom went through the same sort of thing a while back and I was terrified, but she's doing great now, at least in that regard.

Luna, I once tried to dye my hair red. It's normally kind of light brown and streaky. Anyway, it was BAD NEWS BEARS. I took the DIY approach. At the time my hair was pretty dang short. Anyway, I ended up looking like a clown. It might have even been the same color above. Anyway, it did not look just a little bit punky, just a little bit edgey. I looked like Ronald McDonald. And when I see photos from that brief period of my life, I am stunned at how horribly bad it really was. B-but hair grows! And you're well on your way to remmedying the whole thing with more dye. If that doesn't work, consult an expert.

Great shoes, Markelby!

Martin, I'm glad you're getting medicated. It will take a while for your body to reach any sort of plateau.

Oh, and thanks, Huk! We had practice again last night and it was a lot of fun. I wish there was a way I could play guitar without getting all red-faced, but what can you do? I get sweaty too - not very ladylike. But more importantly, what should I wear to all these shows coming up?

:-D

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Sarah - wear a dress. (thanks for your kind words)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Pink, my mom has had two lumps removed that both turned out benign. I think it's relatively common for that to happen, but it's still rather harrowing. Best wishes for you and your family.

I only just recently heard Swamp Dogg's "Sam Stone." My local bookseller (who I've been seriously neglecting since getting so gungho into comics) burnt me a CD of soul singers singing about the Vietnam War. I think it came out not too long ago with a magazine.

Casuistry, you really think that was my best show? I thought it was definitely an atypical show, and probably my least hip show, though I really loved everything I played. Was there anything specifically you liked?

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the kind words, Huckie-pie!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Are you taking the piss Nick?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Hugs for Pink's mom.

Luna, I had hair that exact color a few years ago. But it was on purpose. Um, punk chicks are hot. (Does that make you feel better?)

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

She if JeAnne's got it Luna, you gotta have it!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I think Nick's talking about my praise for the Fake Fictions WAAAY upthread.

My newest editor liked my comic reviews! That means I'll get to do more! Hooray!

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Well let's hope so eh Huck.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Uh, yeah, I was talking about the Fake Fictions comments.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Hello again. I'm happy and drinkin' coffee and wearin' new shoes. The fact that said shoes are a bit too narrow I shall ignore for now (they're leather, they'll stretch, right?)

Do they still use dog poo to make leather? I hope not.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Aw my baby sister is cooking dinner for me tonight. It will be baked potatoes and baked beans, apparently. Maybe I should take baked alaska to complete the trilogy. (If I knew exactly what baked alaska was.)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Isn't Baked Alaska similar to deep-fried ice cream?

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it's ice cream with some kind of crust thing and they cook it so that it's hot on the outside and cold on the inside. Actually, it may even involve flambeeing (with FIRE!). I've never had it.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Actually the dung is one of least icky sounding parts of that process.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:58 (twenty years ago)

"Dung" seems too noble a word for dog shit.

Oddly enough each animal has just enough brains to tan its own hide.

I *knew* it'd come in useful one day!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 16 September 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Pink: Hope you're doing OK. Don't get more freaked out than your mother is!

Sarah: The nice thing about people who wear dresses when they play guitar is that if they sway their hips back and forth a bit with the music it creates a really satisfying sinuous visual. This doesn't work as well with pants, alas.

Mark: What's brown and sounds like a bell?

Huck: Generally I liked the older stuff and the, uh, the piece that was clearly from some other part of the world. But even the contemporary stuff was good. There weren't any songs that I really didn't like.

Martin: It's possible that Prine is the better songwriter in the final analysis; all I'm saying is that I've had "Isobel Make Love Upon National Monuments" and "La-Di-Dah" stuck in my head for a few days, and both are great songs.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 16 September 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Should I wear a dress as well?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Yes, of course. That hip-hugging blue number of yours would look great.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm wearing a dress today.

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Thankfully I no longer have pink hair - it's now dark red. I dyed my hair THREE TIMES last night - it's astounding that it didn't all fall out. I think I should do public service announcements, warning people of the danger of being stupid like me.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Uff I am full. I had a tasty diner omelette, hash browns, and toast for lunch. Mmm greasy.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I have never coloured my hair.

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm tired. Although I admit this is true, I don't like it that one of my coworkers pointed it out first thing this morning, and another asked if I felt nauseous. WHAT?!?!?!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:17 (twenty years ago)

SARAH, GET A NEW JOB!!!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Nick, CHECK YOUR EMAIL!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Mommy and Daddy are yelling at each other!

I have to go to Y0rkt0n tonight. Ugh. Family. Sigh.
But my comic reviews are up! I'm cool! Or whatever the comic nerd equivalent of cool is. Oh yeah, I'm a giant dork!

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Sarah, I already replied to your Eurotrip 2005 email. Are we having Yahoo problems again?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I guess so.

You know what sucks more than going to Subway? Smelling like it afterwards...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago)

FUCK!
I guess I'm not going to the party this weekend, as I've just signed up for more WORK (one paid gig, one non-paying gig) and I already have a shitload of shit to get done by Monday, including defrosting the stupid fridge.

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

i was once a sandwich artist in the sticks of maine.

kephm, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:57 (twenty years ago)

kephm, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Do you think my taking on all this work is a means of avoiding social situations?

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Yorkton! I ate at the Subway in Yorkt0n. It was weird seeing all the NYC subway sepia-toned photographs on the walls there. You know, pictures of where I grew up and stuff. If only the Subway restaurants in NYC had pictures of Yorkt0n!

I've started reading that Sask book and it seems to be more a book about "Why Economics, as it currently taught, is sooooooo wroooooooong. I mean, look at Sask!" Which is also interesting.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago)

DAMMIT, i wish that place would call me back. i need to know if i have a job for sure there or not.

fuck it. taquiera time.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 06:37 (twenty years ago)

If you ever get the chance to drive throught the Qu'Appelle Valley in the autumn, I highly recommend it. Unless you're with your brother who believes that blaming skunk smells on you is hilarious. Because blaming it on HIM is hilarious.

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago)

I spent $110 at Old Navy last night! I think that is the most I have ever spent on clothing at one time ever. I got a shitload of stuff though: cords, boxers, work shirts, and sweaters. I am excited because now I get to wear cords to work instead of the stupid slacks I've been wearing. I feel sexy.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago)

I need to do that but I'm wholly reluctant to drop that much cash on clothing...I really want to buy a pair of vintage overalls.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Cords! I love the fall!

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago)

MARK: say hi to SGS for me!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Yes I am look very autumnal today, with dark brown cords and a weird orangey-brown sweater. I feel cozy. And sexy.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

n/a - are you turning into gareth?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I do like brown. But I fear I will never be English enough to be Gareth.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:12 (twenty years ago)

You know what? I feel great today. I feel alert, well-rested, clean, and well-dressed. It's Friday, my boss isn't coming in today, and she will be out of the country all next week. Usually when she goes out of town, she gives us fucking annoying busy work projects, but this time, the projects she gave me were really easy and/or things I had to do anyways. It's beautiful outside, cool but sunny.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I just nearly the exact opposite! But I'll hold in so as to not be a downer.

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago)

My boss gets married next week so he's off for a while!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Yay! I feel good too - and I'm also wearing brown. And yay for Mark's honey being back in town!

This morning when I came back into the bedroom after my shower, I stopped dead in my tracks. I had made the bed because Nick's parents are coming back today. At the head of the bed, I had put Monkey. Pepper, my cat, was doing the kitty march on Monkey facing him and it looked really weird.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago)

euw!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm going bowling tonight. And I've already got some really good names to put on the scoreboard. It's the only reason I'm invited, I think. Last time, I was the hit of the alley even though I'm a shitty bowler.

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Just FYI: Kitty March = when the cat kneads the pillow/blanket/monkey with her front paws. Not really that gross.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh, hahahaha! Me always thinking the worst!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I was supposed taking a friend Chicago this weekend as a surprise late B-day extravaganza, but we've all been too sick/tired/family problems to plan it. So no Chicago for me. I'm sad. But we are re-scheduling for later in the month-if anyone has any concerts planned let me know.
Just looked at paper-OMG Bob Dylan is playing in my town in November. This tea is weird.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:54 (twenty years ago)

This tea is weird. I read this like on SNL: "This Bug is WEIRD!"

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Jocelyn. The website for the band that Sarah and I are in is www.thefakefictions.com. Our shows are on there.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I will take a look-thanks nick!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

ive got to find go go dancers this weekend, for the halloween party i am going to dj -makeout club here i come

kephm, Friday, 17 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I only cage dance.

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I am dancing tonight! I have tech rehearsal in a few minutes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago)

This day is going so slowly. I need it to be the weekend already!!!

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago)

i also gotta figure out what the differnce is between college radio board set-up versus club dj set up

kephm, Friday, 17 September 2004 16:13 (twenty years ago)

@&#^%&@(^#%@. It's only 1:30. If only some beautiful chick would show up at my cubicle...

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:29 (twenty years ago)

It's 1:46 now, and I just might get out of here on time (ie, in 30 minutes!), because I've been cracking on work, and have also decided to not do some shit that I probably should do, but fuck it. Not stuff that will be missed, that's for sure!

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm ready to go. This Indian food in my gut is making me drowsy. Maybe I'll make some coffee.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:47 (twenty years ago)

God I'm so bored at work today and it's lovely out and I want to go finish my book (Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) dammit. Breaktime in 7 minutes. WooHoo.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:51 (twenty years ago)

20 minutes and then here comes BOWLING and BATMAN! (i'm reviewing the new collection Batman in the Eighties, which I'm superstoked about, because, like, that's my childhood!)(that is to say, when I was 9, I used to fight crime)

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I haven't gone bowling in at least a year. But last night at Best Buy I played some stupid bowling video game. It was stupid.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand the appeal of video games that simulate things you can actually do. Like NFL Football, okay, that's beyond the reach of your average 8-yr-old, but BOWLING??? Get off your ass!
However, I used to really like the old Paperboy video game, even though I also enjoyed real life vandalism.

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I hate bowling and refuse to participate in it, though I used to go along, keep score and drink beer. Then everyone changed to automatic scoring, so now all I do is drink beer.

I guess I love bowling after all.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:57 (twenty years ago)

I like bowling, but I am godawful. I totally overthink it. Sarah just kind of plops the ball down there, but the last time we played, she beat me. Usually my first game I do ok, and then I get progressively worse with each additional game played.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Playing Tony Hawk 4 on the PS2 is way more fun than skateboarding.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'll give you that.

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 19:01 (twenty years ago)

That's why you have to have a "Special Bowling" move, like the twist or a rock n' roll guitar jump, after you release the ball. It adds loads of points onto your score, I swear. And then sing songs from Grease 2.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago)

What till you hear the names I've come up with. I'm gonna kill. KILL, I tell you!

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait for ILX the videogame.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm out of here, only 20 minutes later than expected, but still 40 minutes earlier than usual. So this is good. Have a good weekend.

Huk-L, Friday, 17 September 2004 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Okay, maybe I'm just a freak.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

No, "!" should be interpreted as "Wow! That's a good idea!"

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago)

My special Bowling moves name is "Crutchy", like from Newsies

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago)

It's like a finishing move from Mortal Kombat (to tie the video game theme back in). I think mine will involve falling to my knees, making the devil horns with both hands, and rapidly waggling my tongue.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I call it "The Hesher."

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Nick, We could make your parents take us bowling and say it's part of tasting the Chicago lifestyle.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago)

My bowling move after release is trying to come up with an excuse for why none of those skittle things have fallen over.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:49 (twenty years ago)

i finally posted photos of the Shopping Cart Races that happen in ann arbor. all the local weirdos & punks get their best gear together to run around main street:

http://www.kingfishphoto.com/gallery/ShoppingCartRaces2004

also, went & saw Casuistry's other band at the White Eagle last night. he rocks out on his keys.

today i hear back from those guys about the job(i hope), get to call the other guy & tell him i'm not taking the job, and go find some rummage sale.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:55 (twenty years ago)

My bicycle seat was stolen today. Just the seat. I do not understand this crime. Is there a big black market for faded bicycle seats?

Tonight at ten (kenan), Friday, 17 September 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Probably was a prank theft.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 September 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Did you see anyone peering out of nearby windows or an alley and giggling?

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 September 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Well, while walking home I noticed a lot of seatless bicycles, meaning they were either stolen or taken along by the owner to prevent them from being stolen. So I guess it happens a lot. Go freakin' figure.

Tonight at ten (kenan), Friday, 17 September 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Sneak preview of Shaun of the Dead tonight!

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 18 September 2004 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Dancing went well. I like bowling, and used to do it every Monday, but haven't gone in a while. I don't do "the walk", I just go up to the line and fling the ball. Someone once said it looks as though my arm is going to come out of my socket and slide down the lane with the ball when I do that. Also I have written two (2) songs about bowling (so far).

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 18 September 2004 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Also, the pix are pretty nice!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 18 September 2004 07:59 (twenty years ago)

I had my best day in ages yesterday. I've known G for over 23 years, and I love him as much as anyone in my life - and in the recent years of my depression, especially after my marriage ended three years back, no one has been a better friend to me. He's one of the most brilliant people I've ever known, and one of the most caring.

Yesterday he got married. I felt immensely happy - I know his bride reasonably well, but the main point for me is how happy she has made him over the last couple of years. I was grinning all through the ceremony, and almost in tears,

After the reception about fifteen of us went back to the most convenient home. The group included one person who was a really good friend in the '80s, but then he married and moved to Glasgow and I've not seen him in years. And my oldest friend D, with whom I was at school and Cambridge and after that we started a magazine together, was there too, and I hadn't seen him in a year or two. A fantastic day all through, though I'm rather tired today as I couldn't tear myself away at a reasonable time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 19 September 2004 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Excellent!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah for Martin! And shame on me for not catching up with this thread earlier, but the work week was pretty full. What's all this about pink hair and farting construction workers?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago)

It's true!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I must believe. Now what's all this about you giving your name to a film about a cat dying in Toronto, though?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Someone talk to me on AIM. I'm bored and trying to stave off Monday.

Archel (Archel), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Chatting will just make Monday come faster!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:31 (twenty years ago)

So I went to the party. I was the first to arrive and the last to leave. I am a shitty guest, but VERY entertaining. Or so I thought. Also, I almost enjoyed myself and thought maybe I wasn't ENTIRELY filled with spite and resentment. But it passed.

Huk-L, Sunday, 19 September 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago)

yesterday was spent tromping around in the rain doing voter reg stuff. then, a 4 hour nap, then off to the dive bar for the pinball tournament and alt-country show.

i think my hangover is about worn off by now...

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Sunday, 19 September 2004 20:13 (twenty years ago)

I have no hair!! Or at least I have short hair, it's taking some getting used to that's for sure! God I do not want to be at work this morning. I had my mum & dad round for dinner yesterday. We had a yummy roast dinner. My bro & his g/f came round a bit later, so I heated them up some dinner, unfortunately I forgot the plastic jug that I had put in the bottom of the oven, so that the kittens couldn't get to it. It melted (obviously) & gravy & hot plastic went everywhere. The cooker doesn't seem to be working. oops! :-(

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 06:55 (twenty years ago)

Argh! It must be really late!
Good morning Pink, and good night!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:08 (twenty years ago)

Hi PinXor. It's too hot to sleep (only 22 but I have no breeze blowing in my window). I may have to resort to popping a couple Sleep-Eze-Ds

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:10 (twenty years ago)

ahh to be too hot to sleep, i remember those days. it's pretty awful here at the moment, dark & rainy. maybe you could have some hot milk with a drop of something in it to help you drift off to the land of nod!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:23 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha.

Sorry about your oven Pink! I do things like that all the time...

I went blackberry picking yesterday and we had blackberry and apple puff pastry things with our tea, which was goooood. I don't really want to be at work again either.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Ooh they sound yummy archel!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:53 (twenty years ago)

Im back. Did I miss anything good? Did you miss me? Doubt it. Had a rather enjoyable vacation, two friends of mine that came on vacation with us got engaged. Technically the last of my guy friends to make the leap. I also ended up in a fight with him two days later because he was bombed and insulted my wife. Needless to say after I grabbed him by the throat and pinned him against the wall he apologized. Then he cried. I totally pulled a Bruce Banner though and flipped out. He instigated though. I rarely get mad and tend to hold things in until a point and then I explode. I think he learned his lesson. We are still friends. Anyways other than what I shall refer to as the "incident" things were good. I bought my wife a dress as a surprise for our anniversay and we went out for a nice dinner. For desert I had a "snowball" which was a ball of vanilla bean ice cream rolled in birthday cake and covered in caramel and heath bar!

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:54 (twenty years ago)

dude, you were totally within your rights to not accept him insulting your wife, but you may have gone a bit too extreme. Still nevermind, good to have you back. Any babies yet??

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 11:57 (twenty years ago)

He stood up first and rushed at me after I told him to knock it off three times in a nice manner. Nope, no babies yet but lots of practice over vacation!

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:00 (twenty years ago)

Mm, that kind of snowball sounds a lot nicer than the British kind which is a disgusting drink involving Advocaat and lemonade, IIRC.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:02 (twenty years ago)

I am sad and angry because one of my favourite poets died, way way too young :(

Archel (Archel), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Hey everyone. I've had a pint at lunchtime and I feel slightly woozy now. It was nice though - catching up with my best mate after his horse-riding holiday (bearing in mind he didn't know how to ride a horse much before he went).

Sarah is back, and I am lovin' it :)

x-post Archie, which one? Did you know them personally? :(

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Chris - fairplay then Sir!!
Archel - oh sorry to hear that hun.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Mark - Michael Donaghy. I didn't know him personally, but he left a comment on my blog once, after I gushed about a reading of his I went to. He was very gush-worthy :(

Say hi to Sarah for me!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Pink, Your hair is growing as you read this - though I'm sure it looks cute anyway.

Archel, I'm sorry to hear about your poet. :-( Perhaps you should write a little something in his honor, if nothing else than just for yourself.

It's so much earlier this Monday morning for me than it is my Uk friends. I need sympathy!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Thanks M, P and S. I am going to re-read some of his poems tonight. (Feel sort of selfish being upset when his partner, son, family and friends are the ones really suffering.) It's a good idea to try and write something myself too, thanks Sarah.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Archel, you are allowed to be upset when someone you admire dies, I think writing something would be a fitting tribute!
Thanks Sarah! Having a fringe & short hair is taking some getting used to, I can tell you!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Hi Bryan! I didn't even know about Captain Canuck coming back! Cool. Maybe.
I didn't get enough sleep and I didn't get enough not being at work. But I did defrost my lousy fridge and clean my oven. I did some other stuff too.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

I bet your head feels a lot lighter though, huh? And it takes less time to wash it?

Chris, that snowball sounds yum. My 6-year anniversary (avec Nick) is 2 months from yesterday; Anniversary of our officially going out, anyway.

I'm excited about:
* all the FF shows this week
* planning EuroTrip 2005
* possibly buying a mini ipod sometime really soon

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh, scandal!
At the party on Saturday people were telling me they liked my CD review in that day's paper. I was like "Uh, stop lying. I didn't hand anything in."
"But I saw it."
So today I checked, and sure enough they ran a review that I had handed in like two months ago. And which ran then. But they still have to pay me.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Huck - will you come round to seeif you can fixclean my cooker?
Sarah - it sure does. It's still odd though you know, but i do like it!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Pink, pix plz

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Send me your digital camera Mark & I'll post as many pics as you want! ;-)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty handy in the kitchen, Pink. I cook, I clean, I suffer chronic existential angst. I'm the perfect boyfriend. Except I don't drive.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Dude my b/f is the perfect b/f & he doesn't drive either. You are in good company!
Now clean my cooker!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Yes'm.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Good. Now would you like a cup of tea?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago)

There is a huge difference between masturbating when you're horny and masturbating when you're lonely. I just thought I'd bring that up. Morning folks.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

What about masturbating when you're bored?

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Masturbating when you're angry?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:22 (twenty years ago)

and a pony she named Wildfire busted down his stall....

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

So remember how I was, like, feeling not so resentful towards the, um, universe? Well that's over. My hate-on is more fiery than before. It's my own fault.
So I went to the party on Saturday, which was given by a former co-worker, who had been the one person in the office to treat me like a human being. We're sort of almost-friends. Anyway, so I go to his party, and, whatever, I had fun. I enjoyed some booze and conversation. And now, back at work, the same people who treated me like dirt before, but were sorta nice to me on Saturday are just back to treating me like dirt. Or like non-existant dirt.
That's why I don't socialize with these fuckers. Because they're assholes and I despise them.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Ned, I dunno. There's a lot left to be planned, including who is going and where and when... ha ha

Originally, the idea was that it would be the three sisters and their boyfriends, but now one of my sisters, the one in Paris, has said her bf definitely wouldn't come along, but that makes things awkward. I wouldn't want her to be the third wheel the whole vacation, especially because she is SO super sensitive. So we'd all have to give her lots and lots of attention and never leave her alone and ay ay ay...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

my breakfast meeting at my new job was put off today, since one of the owners is at home with a sick kid, and the other got out of a med appt late. so! they want me to start tomorrow, and they'll pay me under the table for a bit just to get me set up.

not bad. move to a new town & get a job in two weeks.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 17:23 (twenty years ago)

The intern.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago)

This is the beginning of my meltdown.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

luna (luna.c), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I think I'll just be like, hey, guess what, I'm only going to do as much work as the interns do now.
And lots of, "that's not in my job description."
I have no job description. We're a union shop, and I'm the only person in my classification, so...um, there's really no point in anything. Fuck. I'm just really, insanely angry.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 18:06 (twenty years ago)

You should bring it to their attention - you work hard and you should be compensated accordingly. I know dick about Canadian labor laws, but this kind of malarkey isn't legal in the States.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:10 (twenty years ago)

It's really not worth fighting for. This is a shitty job and they said so when they hired me. The guy who hired me even said "I can't see someone of your intelligence lasting more than 18 months in this position." That was May, 2001.
Who's intelligent now, bluto?
I'm gonna go cry in the smokers' pen, bye.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago)

1. less shit

teeny (teeny), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I guess, lately, I've just been pretty busy and preoccupied by so many other things, that I haven't really bothered thinking about how I feel about my job and my relationship with the people I work with. And then, the party, and then overhearing the schmuck intern telling one of his buddies over the phone how much money he's making.
And that job in Calgary I didn't apply for. And I snuck a look at this week's music column and for the at least third week in a row it's something that has absolutely nothing to do with any thing local or relevant and I've been trying to get ahold of some shitty ska band all day and their cel phone is made out of ass and their bio is basically "we are a ska band" and I don't really have a personal life and
I am not going to dwell on any of this. I am going to move forward and look out for no. 1 (that's me).
And I'm going to "disappear" all the paper clips.
"What, you're out of paper clips? I just restocked the closet on Friday! What the hell is wrong with you people!?!"

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 18:43 (twenty years ago)

One of my new bosses told me in no uncertain terms that she thinks I'm an idiot. This was after maybe two and a half months of her being here. She insulted me so badly that when I picked my friend up for dinner that evening, I had to pull the car over to the side of the road because I was such a mess. I feel for you, Huck.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 20 September 2004 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Jeanne, I was told a similar thing by my boss last week. And that (among many other reasons) is why I am now getting out of here ASAP.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, Jeanne. It's important to feel respected and valued at work, I think. I've no idea what you do, but you strike me as very intelligent, so my strong suspicion is that your boss is no judge, as many aren't.

Plus, I'd just ruin my health by staying up way too late, as it seems like late at night is the only time I spend much time online at home. But I'm gonna go read comic books in bed and think about maybe calling in sick tomorrow. I've earned it.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

Why are you NEVER on AIM?

-- adam. (adamr...), September 20th, 2004.

What comic books are you reading? Recommend some more to me. DO call in sick. You HAVE earned it.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:45 (twenty years ago)

I bought a big pile of used comics from the 70s and 80s, mostly Justice League of America, World's Finest (dollar sized!), and some All-Star Squadron and I've been reading them. Did you even notice that whenever Batman hangs out with Superman (pre-Frank Miller), his coolness drops by about 5 degrees. Or goes up, since low numbers are cooler. I'm confused.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago)

It's because we like you, Huck, we really like you.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago)

hmm...I looked at some of the artwork for the new Capt4in C4nuck and it looks amateurish. I was kinda hoping for something interesting.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 05:35 (twenty years ago)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 07:06 (twenty years ago)

crummy. It was an apology, for something I said which may or may not have offended you. So, here, more publically, "I'm sorry for something I don't exactly remember right now but still feel bad about."

*covering self in sackcloth and ashes*

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 07:07 (twenty years ago)

You can't feel bad about it if you don't remember what it is!!

I do! I know I was being a jerk, but I can't remember what jerk occasion it was!

You jerk! Feel better now?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 07:11 (twenty years ago)

:) Yes. Also, I didn't realize you were an East Anglian - have I mentioned I went to UEA for a year in 2002?

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 07:12 (twenty years ago)

Well actually, I like to think of Cambridge as being separate from East Anglia tbh, but that's just me. Whereabouts is UEA?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 07:14 (twenty years ago)

Norwich - maybe the dullest town in all of England.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 07:30 (twenty years ago)

hahah, like I said, I like to think of Cambridge as separate to EA!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 07:32 (twenty years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:29 (twenty years ago)

What is all this huh? Y'all make me sound like some sort of ogre!
We were never 'not friends' mark, it's just that you were an arse expressed an opinion that suggested (to me) that me & my family were some kind of freaks for wanting to see the dead body of our loved ones. It's just something that was very close to my heart & until you have experienced it, you really can't know what it's like. (only joking about the arse bit!;-) )

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Well, no, I was a bit of an arse - I'm sorry I was so opinionated and insensitive. Hugglez?

Of course! *Grabs mark round the neck in a head lock & ruffles his hair head* ;-)

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

The basic rule of thumb with me (how pretentious am I?!!) is that if you get some sort of rise out of me, or I get a bit shouty at you (royal you), you've generally touched a nerve. It aint no biggie & it isn't meant to be taken personally. Now huck, about that tea...

PretentiousPinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 09:36 (twenty years ago)

I love Stephen Jay Gould. I mean, who knew that the labia majora and the testicles were the same piece of tissue, only the testicles fold and fused together while the labia didn't? Fascinating!

He also gives a very simple and logical reason why men have nipples, which is along the same lines - gender isn't differentiated in a foetus until it's a fair bit along the growth path, so the bits that become nipples simply don't develop fully in men.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Cripes this Andrea Bocelli song "Con Te Partiro" is friggin gorgeous.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:15 (twenty years ago)

why cant i find a chicken sandwich at 10am? is this the free world or what?

kephm, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Chicken doesn't seem any less breakfasty then ham or sausage to me, but what do I know? I'm a vegetarian.

I don't know yet, Pink - definitely Paris again to see my sister's set-up there, then on to somewhere else. Possibilities include Southern France on to Italy or Austria/Germany...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh c'mon Sarah, you know you want to come and visit Hove County Cricket Ground as well :)

My god, one of the tutors just came in, stared at the photocopier (which was churning through a rather large job for me) for a while, then grabbed a bunch of the completed copies, looked at them, then put them back on top of the still processing pile EVEN THOUGH it was obviously on SORT mode you MORAN ie I want the copies in the order they come OUT not the order you have idly shuffled them into out of pure nosiness!

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:25 (twenty years ago)

So you're not coming to the UK then? :-(

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago)

They have violated the Copier Code.

Holy Office Ninjas shall bludgeon them to eternal regret by COB Thursday.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit. I missed the radio station's AGM last night. Shit, shit, shit. I also missed two committee meetings this month. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Wait a minute...I don't really OWE them anything. But I do appreciate their existence, and I did agree to take on a certain amount of responisibility. Maybe they voted me off the board last night?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Ooh good. Although actually I feel a bit guilty now as she has just apologised and anyway there was no damage done in the end... but still: the Copier Code! Yeah!

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Why was I out until 1:30 last night? Why did I drink and stand 10 feet from a Marshall stack? Why did I talk (read: shout-in-her-face) to a merch gal for over a minute straight about how much I loved the band on her T-shirt? Why was I the only one dancing? Why did I leave two completely pointless messages on the voicemail of the girl I have a crush on? Why am I awake, at work, and attempting to function? W?H?Y?

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago)

kephm, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Je4nne. That sounds like fun to me.

I don't know, Pink. This whole trip-planning thing can be a bit of a pain. I really want to go to London too, but both my sisters have already been there and ay ay ay.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha. This thread is all over the map.

Je4nne, I wish you could come rock out at one of our shows.

Huck, actually, that sounds like a good idea, but I still want to Eurotrip 2005 myself. Nick and I could take a romantic excursion up to Canada sometime. What season is the best to visit?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Sarah - couldn't you & nick just pop over to london whilst your sisters are busy elsewhere? Oh & could you bring Luna & Jeanne with you? k thx bye!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Actually, there is no good season. BC and Western Alberta (the Rockies) are nice most of the time, but uh, on the plains you have your choice between blistering, dry heat mixed with pestilence (grasshoppers the size of turkeys) and blustering dry cold mixed with MORE COLD (thank you windchill!).
Obviously, this week I am no SK Chamber of Commerce.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I did well with the first week of December but I'm told it was unseasonably warm. But I kinda suspect that's what Canadians say to try to scare/impress the nonlocals.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I mean, wunderground.com implies that this will be a perfectly lovely weekend in the Gine.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, this coincides with what I was talking about on ILComics, about why more supervillains don't target Cdn cities, since we have a dearth of superheroes.

See, if I were a supervillain, that's totally where I'd go. I'll bet Toronto is actually completely run by supervillains who make fun of the Toyman and
Captain Cold and the Grinch and whatnot for bothering with the cities with superheroes in em.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I didn't take you to the Little Newfoundland neighbourhood in Regina, did I?

Anyway, Sarah, you'll be able to see the glamourous parts of Western Canada during the finale of the Amazing Race tonight!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

ARGH I just remembered I somehow have to figure out how to program our VCR so that we don't miss the AMazing Race finale while we're out playing our mini-show tonight!

Is the Little Newfoundland part of Regina one of the glamorous parts?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:53 (twenty years ago)

That could make a good (bad) sitcom. "Rock-in-Gap, SK", a.k.a "Little Newfie On The Prairie".

That doesn't answer my question. How is "b'y" pronounced?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realize that was your question. "bai"

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Last week during one of our work breaks, I learned that two of my coworkers, both less than 10 years older than I am, have NEVER been on a plane. I couldn't wrap my head around it. Also, they both said they never wanted to anyway.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

i've only flown twice...to florida. i hated practically every damn second.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I haven't been on a plane since '96. Do they still fly?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Last flying was 13 September 2001...
