ILMiXor Disc 3: I've Got a Secret

Message Bookmarked

We just ended Disc 2; now it's time to move on to the next one(s). The queue is below. Since this is the start of "round 2," I decided to alternate between people who haven't gone yet and people who went in the last round. Dom goes first, I follow him, and so on. Keep your eye on this thread to see how things are progressing and to be aware of when your turn's coming up. I'll also be posting the updated queues in the comment boxes on the blog (they'll be in the top or next-to-top blog post, depending on when I get around to dealing with it).

The theme this time is "I've Got a Secret" -- take that to mean whatever you'd like it to, but make your choice specific enough so we'll have some idea of what you're getting at. Remember that this is a mix and not just a random bunch of songs -- part of the fun of this (for me, anyway) is finding good segues out of the track that comes before yours.

I'll be adding updated info to the blog later tonight.

Relevant links below (if you're not sure about something, check the earlier threads for frequently asked questions answered frequently) (we didn't really start establishing "rules" until somewhat late in the first disc).

Expect a first entry at some point tomorrow.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

hooray! i was just wondering whether i should e-mail you.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 26 February 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

JBR, could you change the blog settings so that only the most recent ten (or fifteen or twenty ...) posts are displayed?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

i'll do that.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Everyone should just submit 'Take Your Mama' and be done with it.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

i was thinking this would be the time for the obligatory fred neil segue.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Obligation nothing. We'll beat it out of Fred of his own free will.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

tidbit i just found out, that makes these cds come full circle in a way: the lead singer of my track went on to sign and "executive produce" deee-lite at elektra.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Right, who should I contact to host the MP3? I'm not very big on doing the Yousendit thing.

(The blurb'll go up tomorrow morn)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

you can mail it to the shared gmail account (see info above) and whoever gets to it first can host it.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Marvo. Will do.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

i need my turn to come up by thursday or after saturday otherwise i will have to go later in the queue.

basquiat (disco stu), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I've only just got round to catching up with the last 10 or so songs, but the Ark track from the last disc has expired :(

I won't be able to go til Wednmesday morning.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 28 February 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

posting the ark track to gmail.

lex - swygart is going today so wed. morning is cool.
tricky - expect your turn to come up after saturday. if it doesn't, maybe someone will trade spots with you.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

everything up to disc 3 track 2 is now in the gmail inbox. would some generous soul mind hosting the couple of yousendit-ed tracks that are on the blog? i'm already hosting nine mp3s myself.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I'll trade spots with Tricky should he need it.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Right, I've not written the blurb yet, that'll probably go up around half-six-ish, but I'll email the track along now.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

i can host the other yousendit files. do you know what they are off the top of yr head, jbr? thanks for offering to switch, jeff. hopefully i can still go in the appointed order....

basquiat (disco stu), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

looks like it's just the ark. i thought there was another, but i guess it's found a happy home. :-)

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Blurb up.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

good song!

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

swygart's track still needs a host. it's in the gmail folder.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Haha I had a choice of three songs for my turn and I was going to pick the one which sounded best after Will's - and they'd all sound great! Maybe the answer will come to me in my SLEEP.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

is there a time limit for tracks on this disc? i have3 or 4 options here (depending on what comes before mine)

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

use your judgment. i'm betting that the average track on this will be between 4 and 7 minutes.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

how's it goin', lex?

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

no word from the lex. that's odd. firstworldman, do you want to post in the meantime?

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 March 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

damn i should've gotten in on this

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Thursday, 3 March 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

i can't post til tomorrow, actually. but if you don't hear from lex by then, i will happily do it.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 3 March 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

just posted! sorry, I was going to post before I went out but managed to delete everything without saving it, bloody computers etc. I'm a bit drunk so apologies if the blurb makes no sense: also it's a yousendit file which needs to be hosted.

i'm planning on posting an instrumental, which perhaps offers an alternate but still literal take on the 'secret' premise, though there are other aspects of secrecy involved. it is all rather tenuous though!

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

tres cryptic!

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

my link to the theme was horribly tenuous. I had one song which totally fit the theme but the blurb wasn't coming at all, and also I think more people would like this one.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

I can re up the Ark track if it is still needed, or if anyone is having problems with shared gmail inbox.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

lex, i uploaded yr track to my site if you want to change the link:

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

cheers! have done so.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

could you do that, mfg? thx.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 March 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

has there been any thought or discussion about covers or artwork? craving something since i burned 'chutzpah' and 'pop top 40' but am no graphic designer.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 3 March 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

i was gonna ask elvis telecom cuz he does the best cover art of anyone anywhere. nate patrin's no slouch either, if he wants to come up with something.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

elvis will be making us pretty cover art this weekend.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

still have to write something, will do tonight/tomorrow - where's firstworldman at?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

dunno! i'd like to keep this moving though, so if you wanna post tonight (or tomorrow), feel free. firstworldman can still go if he has something ready before then.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

working on it right now between work stuff. should be up in a couple hours.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 4 March 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

roxor. thanks!

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

mine will be ready by monday - will this cramp anyone's style? i can probably do sunday if so...

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 5 March 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

I've just re-upped the track by The Ark (link in the comments box.)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 5 March 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

sorry firstworldman, i gotta pass the mic to stevem.

ms. witherspoon, can you do sunday night? that would be great.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 March 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah - i can do sunday night - no prb.

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

sven bastard's post is up!

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 March 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

someone should post the Geir track!

Sven Bastard (blueski), Sunday, 6 March 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

i gmailed mine - short blurb.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

peter, you can post the blurb using the blogger account you signed up with. (i could post it for you but your name wouldn't show up in the "posted by" field. sadly blogger hasn't come up with a way to change that.)

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 March 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

ah, i just went into the settings and i'm seeing that you didn't respond to the invite i sent to your hotmail awhile back. did you receive it? should i send another to your gmail address?

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 March 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

hmm. i dont think i got it. sorry! yeah - send it to the gmail account.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 7 March 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

sent. once you've got an account, go ahead and post your blurb -- i'll post the mp3 link once i get the track uploaded.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 March 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

also, a reminder to everyone hosting mp3s: you can take the disc 1 tracks offline on march 11.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 March 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

blurb up, jbr.

bump

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm writing the blurb now ... almost done.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

OK, my post is up.

Whoever can host the yousendit file, email me and I'll change the link. Enjoy!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

running time's at about 25 min. right now.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm on it - Barry's track has thrown me a bit so i have to decide between a few.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

oooh, i have a great track that would go after barry's.

basquiat (disco stu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

The entire mix is throwing me for a loop thus far. I'm glad to see that I kept up the trend.

I was a bit lost after hearing Peter's track ... I thought about going the musique concrete route, but couldn't find (what I considered to be) a good fit.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

mine is ready to go - but i've never used blogger before, here's hoping!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

sorry for the curveball, barry.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

mine is up. the link was broken initially but works ok now.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

No problem, Peter, curveballs are fun!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

i woulda thought jed especially could go from a woob track no problem.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

but, uh, wow...not what i was expecting!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

just out of interest does anyone think there are some links that don't seem so cohesive? i've not worried too much about what's come before my choices as i don't value that aspect too highly (tho of course i recognise that two tracks back to back from the same genre/with many similarities is probably not the way to go).

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

it's hard cos it's quite a strange theme though. it made the segue more limited and much tougher.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

just out of interest does anyone think there are some links that don't seem so cohesive?

yes, i do, definitely, but the beauty of digital music is that you can rearrange!

basquiat (disco stu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

i will have something up within the next 12 hours or so....

basquiat (disco stu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

just out of interest does anyone think there are some links that don't seem so cohesive?

i'll be the first to admit that my track doesn't segue so well out of dom's -- i had other songs in mind that made for smoother transitions, but after careful deliberation i decided i wanted to go with the best song, not the best segue.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I think the three most recent tracks segue together very well (but I am biased, obv.)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

stevem complains about the mix being not cohesive but his caveat is that "i've not worried too much about what's come before my choices as i don't value that aspect too highly"

wtf?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

well maybe "complains" is putting it too strongly.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

i'm more concerned about people's song choices being a little tooooo tenuous w/r/t the theme.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

i mean, did we want a cd full of "secret agent man" and "the secret life of arabia"?

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

no. but one should be able to recognize (wihtout reading the liner notes) that each song has a "secretive" element.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

wihtout

when the fuck did i become dyslexic?

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

(full disclosure, though: one of the songs i was considering was strawberry switchblade's "secrets")

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

jody i don't know if i have the technology to follow up after the trickster goes, i'll let you know later tonight

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

whatever i like the "meaning" open eneded its going to be the best one yet

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

ob. sour: if you can e-mail an mp3 you've got the technology.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

i was almost going with Dee Dee Sharp's northern soul stomper "Deep Dark Secret".

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

but my actual track is more secretive than that one IMO.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I can email an mp3 but I'll try, you just see if I don't

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

ok sourpuss, you're up...

basquiat (disco stu), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

sourpuss, just upload the MP3 and send it using http://www.dropload.com -- it's what I use and it works and it's easy.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

yousendit worked for me

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

Whoa, wait, I'm after Sourpuss, yeah? Hmm...I *really* need to catch up with this. But I shall, tonight. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

hey so did this work? jody?

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I put the blurb up but didn't publish it, mp3s don't work from this computer or mine at home, if someone wants to take the song from the group email (I also emailed it to you jody) and put it up and publish the post we'll be good to go

otherwise skip me as i have mongo deadlines (trying to write about the lebanese/syrian conflict for grade school kids, oy vey) and shitty internet technology

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

hang on -- been offline until now.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

cool. just let me know if it all works. if not: it's NED TIME FOR BONZO

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

WARGH. Etc. If it's me up next then it'll have to wait until tonight, if that's no worry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

you're all uploaded and posted -- track works fine (i converted it to mp3 but i'll leave both formats in the gmail folder).

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

THANKS

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

(no worry at all, ned. it'll give everyone a chance to catch up on the insane amount of posting we're doing.)

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

current running time is 41:33, just past the halfway point!

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

(pondering that I'll most likely be on Disc 4, and guessing how far up in the tracklisting I'll be)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 10 March 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

*merry* Okay, hopefully sometime tonight -- I will listen to the recent songs, think and dig up something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

is the theme gonna change after 1 disc?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 10 March 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

Disc 4 is "Maximalism", Disc 5 is "Voyeurism" (discussion is on the signup thread).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 10 March 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

the Maximalism one will be interesting as the word itself has different meanings/interpretations in different art forms..

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 10 March 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

(pondering that I'll most likely be on Disc 4, and guessing how far up in the tracklisting I'll be)

i'm guessing you'll be pretty close to the beginning of disc 4.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Reviewing all the recent songs now. Some inspired choices here!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Okay, thanks to a flash of inspiration, a pre-existing mp3 being available and questionable taste on my part, my entry is up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

i wonder how many people are downloading these? one thing that's missig from ilMixor so far is more action in the comments boxes.

There's actually a way of finding out how many people are downloading; it just needs jbr to visit www.mybloglog.com, fill in a couple of boxes, and add a single line of code to the bottom of the blog template. This will then track and count all clicks to external links on the site.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

jed your post ws awesome and so ws the song!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

i added the code but blogger's being shit right now and won't let me republish. they're probably in the middle of adding another completely unnecessary feature.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I've been unable to edit posts in Blogger all day. The service has been getting slower/flakier over the past 2/3 weeks.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Well, while we're waiting, did my choice qualify as something with a secret? (I do like the fact we've gone in three songs from a David Sylvian song to RYL and it somehow still made sense.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

haven't listened to the track yet but your choice of ryl was definitely inspired!

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

You should give it a listen, it's but a minute and some seconds long. Simple yet effective. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

gotta head out now, but i'll be back in a few hours to address all your ilmixor needs!

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

blogger's back up. back to work, all of you!

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

i wonder how many people are downloading these?

number of external clicks since i added the code: 33.

Unfortunately, Billy Dods has other things on his mind right now, so it seems that we should skip his turn. Hopefully he will post at a later date.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Saturday, 12 March 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

JBR, it's entirely possible I'll be on vacation in San Fran when it comes up to be my turn.. probably early on in the Disc 4: Maximalism. If my turn comes up anytime before Friday march 18th, please move on with the other folks until Friday March 18th arrives before asking me for a track/review.

I doubt that will happen, but just in case people get all speedy and shit.. ;)

I'm strapped for time these days, so I'll gmail my file to the account tonight with my blurb rather than wait for lemin.

BARMS, Monday, 14 March 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

you'll probably just want to put that one up. i'm in LA without my computer so i'll have to defer.

also, i have no fuckin clue what song i'd post. ahem.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

You mean, that double booking ISN'T a mistake?

(I was set to do it over tonight, if I'm bumped, does that mean I'm on disc 4 or 5?)

BARMS, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

no, it was a mistake. if you really really really do it tonight, you can be on disc 3. if you want to take the other spot, uhhh, probably disc 4.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I'll take Disc 4. I had a non-cliche choice in mind for this disc, but I'm not as flexible as normal right now. I have the perfect choice for disc 4, and if I'm not on that, I'll be let down.

BARMS, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

You could've put your disc 4 choice on disc 3 and the secret coulda been that you were really saving it for disc 4.

gspm (gspm), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

no, just the lull ;-)

sexy waitress connie stevens (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

I caught up with my ILMiXor listening last night ... Disc 3 is, of course, fantastic and I think the Free Association/KMFDM double bill would make a great conclusion to the mix. Ending with a weepy song
followed by a (somewhat) mood-lightening uptempo track -- that's a sequence straight out of Mixtape 101.

If the lull continues until Monday then we could consider making it final ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

yikes, just saw this ... sorry I was gone all day yesterday and out late last night. I am on it!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, actually MindInRewind makes a great point.. I think the curators of each mix should have the power to determine when a mix is done.. if he/she feels it appropriate. since jbr is on this one, maybe Stormy Davis should wait for her word before proceeding.. as she may feel the mix is just right as it is, and he may end up beginning the next one?

..or not. It's JBR's baby.

donut debonair (donut), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

sexy waitress connie stevens (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if i can sneak into secrets...i'm freaking about maximalism. i have no idea about soviet politics.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 20 March 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

Isn't maximalism just the inverse of minimalism???

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 20 March 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximalism

Maximalism is a term used in literature, art, and music to apply to post-minimalist movements or works, named in analogy with minimalism. It is not currently in wide use, though it has become more prominent as of 2004.

...

In the more general sense "maximalism" is applied to any doctrine or school of thought that extends its basic principles to the largest possible area. For example a "maximalist" vision of a nation state is one that encompasses all of the areas where the nationality is abundant, a "maximalist" program in science asserts the strongest possible form of its axioms.

Also...

http://www.musicdiscoveries.com/music/categories/meade/meade.html

Glenn Meade composes "maximalist" music: complex and dynamic works for a large synthesizer orchestra. Utilizing more than 40 different synthesizers, samplers, and audio processors he creates beautiful timbres and powerful musical statements. A master of electronic instruments, Glenn achieves sounds that reflect all the breadth and nuance of a skilled virtuoso. They are then fused together in compositions that are symphonic in scope, with strong melodies, chromatic textures, and energetic percussion. Complex and engaging, the compositions vary dramatically -- from those with blistering speed and intensity to those with slow grandeur and haunting melodies.

Haha, now I doubt Glenn Meade is seen as the absolute model for the theme for Disc 4 ;) ... however reinterpret his example into whatever form you feel a song you have in mind is analagous to the description(s) above.. and there you go.

donut debonair (donut), Sunday, 20 March 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

although the term "maximalist" was never used to describe these guys.. think MBV's "Loveless", or Cornelius's Fantasma... or anything that tries to be as multi-layered/multi-faceted as possible. Something that tries to occupy every part of your brain at once... or tries to occupy so much of just one part of your brain...

This would be my interpretation. Your interpretation is up to you.

donut debonair (donut), Sunday, 20 March 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

3 guesses what my intepretation is, and the first 2 don't count.
