yes, i do understand satire, aaron. i have read jonathon swift. i often like richard pryor. and the dictators. i also know some satire is much more obvious than other satire. and some satire is geared toward people who aren't nearly as smart as they think they are, and some isn't as clever or insightful as it pretends, and is in fact quite smug in its delusions of insight. (hello, bill hicks.)

that said, "slime" is a fairly catchy song. almost as catchy as "dirty love."

Thinking Ween were ever funny = God's way of telling you you should smoke less marijuana.

I loved Ween 6 years before I ever smoked weed, and since then I've only listened to them high once. Ween's "schtick" is that they write amazing songs. Ween is not 100% satire - more like 5%. You're missing the point. "Weird Al" isn't a songwriter - he's a joke writer. Ween puts their songs way before their "jokes."

Faust is classic and brilliant, but less than consistant, whereas I love every Ween album. The only wholly consistant TMBG album is Flood - and their songs are way better than their jokes. "Weird Al" is boring after you enter puberty.

I do actually think that 90% of Zappa's music is pretty boring. The best 10% is pretty awesome though.

And as for Mr Bungle, sorry, but "throwing tuneless parodies of every genre we can think of into the pot with no subtlety whatsofuckingever" does not make you innovative. It makes you a silly cliche, and a cartoon from the gitgo.

o.e.d, Sunday, 10 April 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

See, the fallacy of Ween, Bungle, and Zappa (all the way back to Freak Out and Only In It For the Money) is that they stupidly think they are superior to the genres they're parodying. When in fact, they're almost inevitably a lot dumber.

I've only heard about three Ween songs and didn't like them. Now, granted, maybe these were not their good songs. So I'm only gently pushing them aside, not kicking the legs out from under them. Until I get more facts, I should not say a bunch of stupid shit about one of the most musically eclectic, passionate and proficiant groups working today.

I think what we have on this thread is a few die-hard Ween fans vs. a few people who hate Ween and have somewhat arbitrarily chosen to champion Weird Al as a way of annoying the Ween fans. I say "arbitrarily" because I would be very surprised if any of the vocal Weird Al supporters on this thread actually listen to any of his records on a regular basis or would pay to go to see him, whereas I have no doubt that many of the Ween fans on this thread have all of their records and have been to see them many times. This doesn't prove that Ween is in fact superior, although I think it is a point in their favor.

ween thread brings out the idiots shockah

I'm an idiot now, because I can't stand modern country music? The local "country" station is played in my house constantly - my mother insists on leaving it on downstairs all the time. I've had to listen to it for the past 8 years, and I've never once heard a song I liked on it. In fact, ironically, nothing I've ever experienced has made me loathe this country more than songs like "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy." However, I do love 100's of popular country songs - the majority of which were hits in the 80's and earlier, ie Randy Travis, Glen Campbell, Crystal Gayle, Eddie Rabbit, Charlie Rich, and the like. It wasn't until 12 Golden Country Greats that I realized anyone agreed with me on how real country music should sound. Four years later I heard Laura Cantrell for the first time on John Peel, who is probably my favorite current country singer. I don't listen to a great deal of alt-country or whatever it's called, but I know that what I've heard is much more tolerable than my mom's country station.

See, the fallacy of Ween, Bungle, and Zappa (all the way back to Freak Out and Only In It For the Money) is that they stupidly think they are superior to the genres they're parodying. When in fact, they're almost inevitably a lot dumber.

In the best Ween stuff (by which I mean the first album or two) there is no sense of looking down on the styles they imitate. Parody doesn't have to imply a sense of superiority. It's just a way of playing with form. Their over-the-top lyrics and dadaist humor don't imply any commentary on the originals, because they're so obviously products of the bands' own THC-addled imaginations - the band is so eager to play the fool that there's no way you could seriously believe they're looking down on anybody. Nobody could take "LMLYP" seriously as a critique of Prince - in fact, it's pretty clear that the band is having so much fun trying to sound like him because they probably enjoy his music.

But then, all the people who hate Ween are douchebags too, so I don't really know what to think.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Ween is a parody band, and is not a parody band. They are just too imaginative and cross far too many lines.

I've never heard Faust or Yann Tomita.

I'm kind of curious where this notion that Mr. Bungle is a "joke band" comes from. I suppose this observation is based on having heard the song about fucking Betty Crocker from back in 1991. GET ONE CALIFORNIA.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

I do find it interesting though that, with discussions of Ween and Bungle in particular, there seems to always be a fairly visible amount of condescending sentiments towards those who listen to them.

I think the central thing to Ween's "thing" they do, honestly, has much less to do with irony and satire as it does as attempting to blur the lines between satire and sincerity.

Also: I like Ween the most when they are being sentimental and not-jokey, to be frank. "Cold Blows The Wind" I listen to far more often than "Piss Up A Rope".

One time I heard "Japanese Cowboy" though at an honest-to-God shit-kickin' saloon. I'm not sure the DJ really knew what he was doing, but holy shit was it funny seeing people do some boot-scootin'-boogie to "like a Japanese cowboy/like a brother in skates".

This thread is frustrating. I think I will go away for awhile now.

God damnit, who gives an Alf turd if you don't throw some Rufus Wainwright in the mix! Seriously, this guy could write a concept album about fucking flip flops and I'd jizz my Oshkosh B'Gosh's in a New York minute. When I'm alone, I think about his sideburns and wonder where all the songwriters went. Just take a second to ponder this man's God-like ascent to the top of the pile and then slit your own wrists for knowing you'll never write a song even a quater as good as "The Tower of Learning." FUCK! Rufus Wainwright - underappreciated like stained bed sheets and George Wendt.
