QUOTE: Most of the time, ILM is a disappointing dick-measuring popularity contest where any serious, sincere discussion of any kind (particularly of gender) is met with a seventh grade bra-snap and high five. I’ve even brought it down to their level: ever think your disrespect of women might have something to do with the fact that you’re not getting laid? I try to step back demurely and make jokey foxy rock critic jokes and join in on bathroom habits threads, you know, just to lighten things up. But no avail, on ILM girls are still icky and not allowed in the tree house without a mudpie to the face, thanks to the Noize Boys, who think their power drill symphonies are so much more sophisticated than everyone else. Their politically incorrect putdowns are so “gay” and punk rock, when really, their language parallels the rise of conservatism in this country. So really, in 2005, this shit makes my blood boil. I can only okey doke along for a limited amount of time, and I have less tolerance than I did a decade ago, perhaps from a decade of this shit. And I mean, my music probably sounds like power drill symphonies to some people, but I don’t use my taste to impress other losers on a message board or make jokes at other people’s expense (except Penn kids who like Citizen Cope because Sonic Youth scares them). The funny thing is, with the Noize Boyz, you can’t joke about their bands or they get all self righteous and cry and rub their penises together, but they will put down anything that you like, if it happens to be female-identified with humor that would make Maxim look smart in comparison. Wow, hairy feminist lesbian jokes, how original? (Le Tigre’s music has been kinda lame lately, which I’d be more welcome to discussing because I can’t figure it out myself). And I mean, when you’re talking to people halfway around the world, don’t you want to do something better than oscillate your weiner? But times like this, something good can come from it. This is from a Sri Lankan woman who responded to a thread about MIA, and thanks to Ned Raggett, she got this piece published in City Pages, a very illuminating discussion on MIA’s politics as PR from someone who lived them. It’s disappointing when a board with so much potential (like the internet itself) has so few flowers among the mudpies. There used to be smart discussion more regularly on ILM, I guess I just missed it, which coincidentally, disappeared along with most of the female posters, I’m told. Everyone knows that guys in packs are dumb, but why do they get so much power when they’re anonymous and cowardly? Not pointing out their obvious cowardice to me, seems downright cowardly, but doing the opposite is an impassioned waste of time, and I have far too many distractions these days. Entry Filed under: Uncategorized 17 Comments Add your own 1. mike | April 5th, 2005 at 9:05 am And this is why my ilxor.com posting is very selective. It’s such a strange place, and it’s a matter of cherry-picking the threads that are actually interesting to me. If nothing else, ilxor.com did lead me to that 1981 10-CD box set, which is going to enrich my life immeasurably. 2. Jim | April 5th, 2005 at 4:22 pm Man. On what planet does this list exist? To each his own, but if you ask me, any list that’s made up of nothing but one-liners is bound to attract idiots who are not capable of posting any more than a single line of semi-original wisecracks. 3. Barry | April 6th, 2005 at 1:59 am Sara, I enjoy your writing most of the time, but you are way off the mark here. Maybe 5% of the threads are dedicated toward making fun of musicians, and maybe 10% of those centre upon silly, harmless jokes like that Le Tigre thread (which is easily ignored amongst the dozens of more constructive threads). The other 90% of the ridicule-based threads attack bands such as Arcade Fire, Wilco, and other blatantly obvious indie-rock targets. I think you’re seeing what you want to see. 4. nathalie | April 6th, 2005 at 3:49 am alas no, barry, she sadly had a point. it’s not always *overt*, but mostly an undercurrent. i hate saying it out loud because most of the time you’ll only get a “sigh, not again.” barry, why do so few women post on ILM? compare it (for example) with ILE. 5. ScottR | April 6th, 2005 at 11:08 am Why post on a list that’s not to your liking? Seems like a waste of time to me. 6. jimmy draper | April 6th, 2005 at 12:05 pm wow! once again, a dude telling a woman why she shouldn’t feel oppressed or marginalized, etc. “it’s you, not the world, that’s totally crazy.” this stuff never ceases to amaze me. 7. jek | April 6th, 2005 at 2:41 pm i always feel like a spoil-sport when i point out some of these things about ilx, but the discourse there really does bum me out about 70% of the time. i think it started out as something good, but it seems to have degenrated pretty quickly. i dunno - maybe i’m just wearing the same fog-colored glasses as you, but a lot of the time i just end up feel frustrated with it. 8. nathalie | April 6th, 2005 at 3:36 pm “Why post on a list that’s not to your liking? Seems like a waste of time to me.” it’s not that i hate it, quite the contrary. but why should i stop? there are good moments/people. and with that attitude (just refrain from posting), nothing will change. 9. Barry | April 6th, 2005 at 3:43 pm once again, a dude telling a woman why she shouldn’t feel oppressed or marginalized, etc. That’s not what I was doing — notice that I didn’t defend those asshattery threads — but to characterize *most* ILM threads as being chock full of dick humour in the manner she described is certainly nonsensical. 10. jimmy draper | April 6th, 2005 at 4:43 pm i don’t think sara’s point is “nonsensical” at all, barry. i definitely characterize ILM in general as being a space that’s overwhelmingly dominated by a gross duuuude mentality. (sometimes it’s simply more explicit.) which is why i personally keep away from it, and why i totally understand why others may not feel comfortable participating in it. 11. carolyn | April 6th, 2005 at 8:18 pm not to make light of your post, but dude, i love high fives. i’ll slap your paw a good one once i come out of this work coccoon and family-induced tragic fugue state i’m in. high fives and a boozy may brunch for Bees and me, okay? 12. Barry | April 7th, 2005 at 12:44 am Jimmy, you may be interested in reading the recent “who do you not engage with much on ILX?” thread that was on ILE last month. There, you can read comments by people like yourself, who enjoy slagging and making wild generalizations about ILM despite not having a clue about what goes on there because by their (and your) own admission they never read it or post on it. There was a lot of discourse on that thread about why some people avoid ILM. Believe me, dick jokes and adolescent humour are not the main reasons, not by a long shot. It also bears mentioning that anyone proposing a “girls don’t feel welcome on ILM thanks to the noise dudes” theory has to find a way to explain why the ILX noise board has far more regular female posters than ILM does. 13. Sara | April 7th, 2005 at 1:07 am Barry, The noise dudes welcome ladies who aren’t a threat to them, who coddle them like cute puppies who shit on your new carpet, and never disagree with them even the slightest. I’ve been posting on and off on the board for about a year, and as Stevie was saying, it’s more an undercurrent of hostility if you dare to even rock the boat slightly. The dudes (both noisy and not) seem to have this playing back and forth, but the women tread lightly. I mean, there are people like you and Ned and Anthony and a few others, but unfortunately, you guys are in the minority. And it’s interesting that most of the people who agree with me so far, are guys. And there are far more folks who have written to me privately who feel the same. I couldn’t figure out why this was bugging me so much and then Jimmy hit the nail on the head privately about ILM’s growing influence in print pubs, which only rewards the asshole behavior. And seriously, why would Jimmy post to a board where people were giving him shit for voting for primarily female artists in Pazz and Jop? Wouldn’t it be interesting if all the folks who agreed with me, male and female, all posted to ILM en masse, instead of posting here, which is still quite nice. Hey I guess I have more to say. I lied. 14. amy | April 7th, 2005 at 2:28 am sara, you are writing so much important stuff here. i wish i had time to write some sort of in-depth comment, but alas, EMP continues to fry my brain!! all i can say is thank you for bringing up these issues. 15. fifty nine cent | April 7th, 2005 at 9:29 am I am that rarest of creatures, a rock music illiterate. Almost completely, as those who know me will aver. But I love the writing on this blog. The ideas being bandied about are germane, up to the moment and usually make me think. Sara’s writing usually makes me laugh, loud. That is why I keep coming back to Bees! No apologies, ever, Sara. 16. Diet Tab with Lymon | April 8th, 2005 at 12:25 am I love you, Sara, even though I’m a bad friend lately. But please: More krazy kustomers, less “the InterWeb’s got me down” stuff. I don’t understand why you waste energy on this junk. The InterCon is like the TV. Turn the channel if you don’t like what’s on. I don’t know what the heck this internets chat room geekery is that you’re talking about here, but it sounds like a.) it’s just another place where guys have to rub d-ckheads together because you know, that’s what guys do when shit gets their intellectual pee-pees hard. And b.) more generalizations about guys keeping the females down. I’m a “noise rock” guy (I assume, I like noise) and I don’t want to be coddled by women, I want to be challenged by women. Which I guess makes me one of the 300,000 “exceptions” to the “rule.” And c.) do you want these guys to “change?” Do you want to be their mommy or something and redeem them somehow? Like that doctor chick in “Road House” tried to do with Patrick Sawyze? If they’re dipsh-ts, they’re dipsh-ts. They’re young, they’re drunk with internets power, whatever. Just leave it alone and pay no mind. There are plenty of friendlier places to chat with people. It just seems like there’s a masochism involved here, where you get hopelessly attracted or rather hopelessly drawn to people and places who make you feel unwelcome, instead of just saying “eff you, I know who I am” and walking away and being around the many people and places who welcome you and treat you decently. I mean, you’re not some high school kid. You should be above Internet squabbles with mental juveniles, or even people pretending to be juveniles, by now. I so miss typing “curse words” but I wanted this to get through. Monkeyfluffer! Anyway, I beg you, don’t make me attempt to share more “self-help” with you in the future. It’ll be even worse than this attempt. 17. Sara | April 8th, 2005 at 12:46 am Type all the curse words you want, we’ll make more! No, seriously, all the spam I’m getting is from diets and pharmaceutical companies, which I could surely use in real life, just not here. So the words that have been despammed are words that most people don’t use anyway, but might cause blockages of other words.

sara's post makes me sad, because i believe there's a germ of truth in it, and i hate the idea that i overlook that kind of stuff. lately, i've been more and more conscious (and thus self-conscious) of the fact that so much music criticism is a great big sausage party. and i don't like thinking that i am an unwitting participant in it.

I think she has a point, although I wouldn't single out "noize boys" for creepy sexism. It's present on ILE and ILM and as much made by non "noize" posters as "noize" ones.

yeah rosemary otm. i think it's easy for some people to blame the noise board for the "downfall" of ilx. i mean, it's not like it went from thoughtful five-paragraph posts by nabisco and tom ewing to huge jpgs and zings overnight.

I called her on the ILM thing, so she backtracked by saying that there's an "undercurrent of male posturing" on ILM, or something to that effect, and that this noise dude attitude was responsible for driving women from ILM. Then I pointed out that more women post to the noise board than ILM, so she backtracked again and made that puppy/coddling comment. I decided to end the discussion there rather than point out that several prominent female ILE posters are also noise board regulars (which goes to show that she has no idea who actually posts here, as if that was any surprise).

so, the general consensus is that there is nothing valid in what she says at all?

i'd say there is a valid point in there but it's overshadowed by the generalisation and deliberate button-pushing as a result of frustration. it's a frustration that a lot of men on ILM might even share wrt dearth of female contributors - not because they want to hook up, just because why wouldn't you want a place like this to be as diverse and balanced as possible?

I think, from reading a lot of ILE threads, that a lot of people, men & women, but maybe mostly women, are intimidated by ILM. And they just don't go there that much and they see one Calum thread and they go running back to ILE. Which is understandable. But they never do see the whole picture. And to be intimidated by ILM is so so silly cuz it is filled with the biggest babies in the whole wide world. Myself included. From reading the ILE threads, I notice that the people who are intimidated see it as a VERY confrontational place. Whereas, I think people who hang out there wouldn't think of it as very confrontational. They read some threads, they tell people their fave pet shop boys song and they go to bed. No biggy. From the outside, i think it looks a lot worse than it is.

ilm is terrible. it ain't discourse, it's posturing. and it's DULL!!! if i were to get my music news/info/recommendations from ilm life would seem fucking boring. there definitely are female posters who have vacated ilm -- maura, melissa, ally, some others i'm forgetting -- tho i don't think that has anything to do with dudeness; that's simply seeing the same shit talked about over and over by kids waaaaaaay too eager to prove how smart they are and to denigrate everyone else's taste. THAT aspect of ilm is very macho, but i think that's just record collector/music geek kulchur -- i.e. something not exclusive to men even if the majority seem to be swinging schlong.

sara, yr dig at the woman of the noize board is honestly unfair, and it would do you well to rescind that. judging another woman's feminism is like judging someone's music taste: boring and often misguided.

i've been quasi-part of the whole ilx community since 2001 or so. since the greenspun days. i never post on anything other than the baseball board these days, with occassional stops here and at ile. ilm i skim, just to see what records people are talking about. it's extremely difficult to make a generalization about ilx since it's so big and it's not focused on a lone subject. you could call it geeky, i guess, but -- hello! -- it's a message board!

anyway. i didn't take offense to yr post, sara, although i do believe you are quick to judge and these noize board dudes are some of the nicest people i've ever met. but there are far worse crimes than that.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

otm
and one more thing! i could make a list of "misogynisms to discuss on my blog" a mile long, and anything that happens on an internet message board goes way way at the bottom.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

yancey, i think you make some good, insightful statements but i have to ask: why should sara have to rescind her statement? i think its a little bold of you to ask her to quell her feelings when its other board folks who caused this discomfort in the first place.

yeh yeh, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

well, if she honestly feels that every woman who posts on this board is some meek mouse (or whatever it is that was said), then she shouldn't rescind shit. my read on that was it was an easy way to maintain her hardline stance despite the sudden appearance of conflicting information. the most likely answer of all, i think, is that sara simply didn't know that women posted here and just assumed that they must be lame or even aunt toms to do so. in any event, none of the women who post here exhibit those traits. (except hstencil)

BECAUSE THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT NERDY SHIT!!!!!! YES THE DICK-WAVING IS CRAZY AND OBNOXIOUS, AS SHOULD BE EXPECTED FROM A GROUP OF BITTER YOUNG MEN WITH NO CONTROL OVER THEIR EMOTIONS, BUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE WIMPSTERS AND THE REMORSELESS, OVERBEARING WOMEN-HATERS OF THE REAL WORLD SHOULD BE PROFOUNDLY OBVIOUS. THAT'S THE HILARIOUS THING ABOUT ILX, ITS VERSIONS OF RACISM, MISOGYNY, HOMOPHOBIA, AND ALL OTHER SOCIETAL ILLS ARE STRANGELY SEDATED COMPARED TO WHAT MOST PPL ASSOCIATE THEM WITH. I KNOW I'M GOING DOWN A BAD PATH HERE, AND I REALLY DON'T MEAN TO SUGGEST THAT ANY OF THIS INVALIDATES COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE RACISM MISOGYNY ET AL THAT *DOES* EXIST HERE, BUT THERE NEVER SEEMS TO BE ANY ATTEMPT TO APPRECIATE THIS STUFF IN A PERSPECTIVE BESIDES THAT OF THE ILX MILIEU (EXCEPT WHEN THERE IS). THIS IS WHY IT'S SO HARD TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY WHEN PEOPLE CALL JON HOMOPHOBIC - NOT JUST BECAUSE HE ISN'T, BUT BECAUSE ANY EXPOSURE TO THE KINDS OF GUYS WHO DO HATE GAYS MAKES IT APPARENT WHAT A FAG JW ACTUALLY IS (

my only experience with calling out a gender issue on ilm was on one of the fiery furnaces threads. after however many posts, it devolved into a discussion of how pretty eleanor is. i found it disheartening that after all was said and done we were left with indie rock hot or not?, and posted to that effect (so did matthew p). people went bonkers, accused us of being puritannical and fun-hating, and went on about how their discussion of eleanor's looks was part of a pure aesthetic consideration. the whole thing carried on for some time, and came to no satisfying end. i'm pretty sure that was my last attempt to seriously discuss something seriously, not because i felt intimidated but because it felt beyond pointless. these days i stick to the occasional one-liner about how awesome tom petty is and i feel much better.

now.

andrew l. r. (allocryptic), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I read the article, I didn't think it was much cop. It was, in fact, pretty useless.

ILM seemed a little less nerdy-boyish in the past to me, but it wasn't anything to do w/"noise dudes", it was more that there wasn't any useless fucking list threads or shit like that. List threads are the worst, like 100s of posts which are just like the name of a record, or the name of 10 records or wtfe. wtf is the point of that shit? It does seem kind of stereotypically "boyish", I guess. one could criticise "old" ilm for a variety of reasons perhaps, but list threads weren't a feature of it. When I found ILM, it was like I'd found the best internet place ever. If I found it now, most of it would just be incomprehensible to me.

most of the stuff I liked on ILM is still there, it's just kind of outnumbered. Some days I really enjoy reading & posting on ILM, somedays (like today or yesterday) it's kind of annoying and depressing to read.

ILE and the noise board (and the mod request forum) are the best, fuck the motherfucking haters.

I don't expect or want anyone to give a shit about what I think about all of this, mind.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

IIRC, she turned up in the aim room, posted a load of stuff along the lines of "fuck you all, shitheads" then dropped off. I was drunk though, so I might be wrong.

Did you see Van Der Graaf Generator live Gareth? They were very good.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

You fail to see one important thing: that Jon and Sara are actually quite alike in that both of their names lack an optional H.

SMELLY MY... (Thor), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

"When I found ILM, it was like I'd found the best internet place ever. If I found it now, most of it would just be incomprehensible to me."

my first impression of ilm was just the totally weird sense of taste the majority voice seemed to have. i was already used to the concept of people jockeying for brain merit badges whether it's music or computers or whatever. that's NOT unique to ilm AT ALL. compare ilm to slashdot.org sometime.

the "good old days" talk about ilx has always bothered me. maybe it's cause i'm more of a new schooler, but i was around on ilm in the older days as more of a lurker and many things still seem quite the same actually. outsider perspective i guess.

m.

msp (mspa), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

the first thing that impressed me about ilm was just the generally high level of discourse, people talking seriously about pop music. i thought that was cool. i can't tell whether that's actually lessened, or whether the novelty has worn off. i mean, i tend not to get as excited about a 1,000 post thread about rockism or racism or whatever as i once did. i'll still read it, but i'm not as eager to engage with it anymore. these days, i just like the people.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I was impressed with how nerdy it was. Only hardcore music nerds would start threads comparing, track by track, the live versions on John Cale's "Music For a Rainy Season" with the original recorded versions.

I don't understand many people's negative reactions to the list threads. They're just another form of music trivia, and when you're wasting time but still want to think about something music-related, they are certainly no worse than any of 50 useless ILE threads piling up on any given afternoon. Nobody's pretending that there's any in-depth analysis happening on those threads.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

The funny thing is, with the Feminazis, you can’t joke about their bands or they get all self righteous and cry and rub their vaginas together, but they will put down anything that you like, if it happens to be male-identified with humor that would make Cosmo look smart in comparison. Wow, hairy macho caveman jokes, how original? (Le Tigre’s music has been kinda lame lately, which I’d be more welcome to discussing because I can’t figure it out myself).

-- tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemarygilber...), June 20th, 2005. (later)

funny, at the time you never said anything rosemary.

most people on this thread treat ILM similarly to the original article, that is to say they don't post there but criticise it alot in a place where a reply is not possible.

Also this "ILM days of yore" thing is kind of a strawman, when was the last time somebody on ILM started a thread about how ILM was better in the old days? The only people I ever see talking about it are you guys really. It's funny, I never thought the Noize Board would remind of "this is the thread where I say" but the constant evocation of a non existent "ILE (in this case ILM) was better in the old days" meme that only exists as a strawman really does remind me of the paranoia on those threads on ILE.

I think the amount of the ILM/Noize Board tension that is just based on mythical stuff or perception is probably huge. I think people take ILM too seriously, just as much as the Noize Board.

yeah I know alot of you do, but there's alot of people for whom this board is like their safety blanket. same as any of the subgroups on ILX I suppose to an extent but still.

x-post

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I don't think there's a "ILE was better in the old days" vibe on TITTWIS, though.

I just realized me and Hstencil are the only people who post to both the Noise Board and TITTWIS.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Dance music is the best music in the wrold.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I remember how the noize board used to be, before I showed up. it should return to those halcyon dayz

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

nah jaymc I mean that both TITTWIS and Noize Board are very sensitive that established ILE posters/ILM posters think the boards were better in the old days.

adam otm.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

i think we talk about ilx here a lot. witness the enemies and humor threads. the pickle bar has a lot of "back at the clubhouse" commentary... where we cackle over things that happen elsewhere.

don't even strawmen come from somewhere? where's a nuILX thread? oh searchy...
m.

msp (mspa), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Ronan, how much of this board do you actually read? (ie, it doesn't appear to be much at all!)

or they like coming here so they dont have to deal with impossible posters like harvell and you, ronan.

jack cole's skeletal remains found at the bottom of a ravine (jackcole), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

gotcha, ronan.

yeah, msp is right about that. before i read the noise board regularly, that aspect of it really turned me off. (obviously, as all of you surely remember). but then i stuck around and realized there was more to the board than just that. it still sometimes bothers me from time to time, but whatevs.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah I wasn't particularly trying to start an argument, by saying a lighthearted post was otm.

gygax, I probably read here as much as the other boards, maybe not a huge amount but I do look here anytime I'm on ILX. as I say, my actual point is that I don't think "noize dudes" are necessarily so different from "ILMers", it's just the two boards have kind of different rules.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

no shit!

Ultragrill (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't think the nostalgia for old ILX is overbearing, but it's there. I've seen a fair number of posts that actually single out noize dudes for ruining ILX forever, as if a few JPGs and animated GIFs were destroying the precious fabric of something something...

Cute thread headline (courtesy somebody screen-named "yr mom") on I Love Music recently—"There are two kinds of people in the world: People who hate Wolf Eyes and liars." I kinda disagree, believing that said highly fashionable Michigan noise hypes and onetime Andrew W.K. cronies—not unlike many other turbulent acts plugged below—make fairly compelling if entirely meaningless elevator clatter that goes in one ear and out the other but often coalesces into unexpected hooks whilst passing through. But I still think yr mom's way funnier than all the lying Wolf Eyes fans whose thread headlines always aspire to be fake Boredoms song titles notable for spelling POOOP wrong.

I (noizedude) rarely complain about ILM as a whole but I noticed today that occasionally when MUSIC is discussed on ILM, some wiseacre contrarian/imbecile inevitably waves the "rockist" flag.

The fact that the "intelligent discourse" so bandied about on ILM rarely if ever touches on the music itself instead of leaning heavily on libarts contextual/socio-anthropological angles bursting with academic-buzzwords continues to reinforce my preference for writers like Edd Hurt (quoted above) or Tim Ellison (hell even John Darnielle when he used to) breaking things down in terms of music comp/structure/content.

That said, I'm stoked about Tim's book!

also, not to hamper on the sexism part since thats BORING by now, but: i dont understand why some people from ILE/M come over here and feel a need to post, at all...when they know they're pretty much precisely the reason why this place was created as an "escape/haven" from their (perceived or not) ubiquitousness/dominance over there

i also dont understand the MASSIVE need for approval/acceptance some of the ppl who post to the NB regularly/daily have, who are v obviously _not_ of the "noize" mindset at all, and who many have simultaneous problems with some of the "content" here either... a few almost as a response to their early jeering on here (the NB enemy list) - and perhaps they think that if they keep posting here they can "contain" it

Chaki: you said i could ask

Orbit: you can ask. but I can ask too.
i'd like to know the motive behind it before I decide if i will answer

Chaki: just curious.

Orbit: what made you curious?

Chaki: being male

Orbit: and you want one? I don't give blow jobs to people I don't know and love. When I know and love them, I am fantastic at it.
8:45 PM

Chaki: no i dont want one.
i asked all females and gay males on my list

Orbit: and what do they reply?

Chaki: all different
most people say they are great

Orbit: Well, it's not a difficult skill

Chaki: sure it is
i couldnt do it

Orbit: The evaluation of how good it is should lie with the receiver, not the giver. Ask XXX(Ex-LTR), if you dare and he will tell you what it is like to be on the receiving end of my blow job. That's the only way to know. And why would you want to give a blow job? Are you gay?

Chaki: sheesh talking with you is like talking to a scientologist.

Orbit: how so?

Chaki: you tell me?
see what i did there

Orbit: look i don't know you well enough to be comfortable with you in that kind of conversation. I am protecting myself, asking questions, and being suspicious.

THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW:

1. i prolly started all this by inappropriately hitting on both ms. sherr and ms. scoh fuck i can't spell her last name, y'know, maria, on aim and myspace. i didn't think i said anything too obnoxious (unless "U R CUTE" is tantamount to "blow me" these days?) but hey, that's cool, i was a jerk. maria really looks a lot like babs manning tho! and tho i've never seen her in person, i've always been a fan of ms. manning's work. she is a fantastic songwriter and performer (and firewoman! or park ranger or whatever) and also pretty dang cute.
2. nonetheless they both booked my friends' band, which was mighty big of them.
3. actually come to think of it they booked my ex's old band! the one with teh lezbian in it! i spose they could ask them about big ol' gaybashin' womanhatin' hpencil.

come to think of it i went with ex's band to one of their philly shows?! and i remember there being something about female promoters but they didn't say hi? something like that? wow. weird coincidence. also, in the wawa down the the street i ran into my old friend sar@h w00d who was one of my best friends waywaywayway back when (when i really did act like a jerk, being 12 and all). it was so nice to see her. it's so heartbreaking that she lives in this city and i never see her. oh well. such is life.

attacking him as "insensitive" will only strengthen his position and mindset. Guys like these(& their voters) feel that "sensitivity" = "tolerance" = "polical correctness" = "multiculturalism" = "coddling", so being "insensitive" as such is a good thing, to them.

there's the other connotation as well that "sensitivitity" = "not macho" = "faggy", etc.

is calling me "dork" and "dweebasaurus" (seriously!) supposed to "get me," too? do you realize how junior-high locker-room that sounds? funny. and what the fuck are you even talking about, "trying to be all collegial"? i know and like most of the people who post on the noise board, so i come here and talk to them. what's wrong with that? i've explained on other threads why i started "noise dude nonsense," and i think everyone understands where i was coming from, so it's even not worth going into again.

"in my opinion, if there is something you don’t want to be photographed, don’t do it in a space where there’s high visibility. this is not advocating sexual prudence but id like to see people think about what possible outcomes come from their actions. for example, say stupid shit on the internet, and it will wind up on a blog, messageboard or elsewhere. have sex in front of a plate-glass window in high proximity to college students, expect to be photographed/ridiculed on the internet."
