Winter begins! The name "winter" comes from a Germanic term meaning "time of water" and refers to the seasonal precipitation. The winter solstice—the moment when the sun's apparent path is farthest south from the Equator—is used to officially mark winter's beginning. In the Northern Hemisphere, winter begins on the "shortest day" of the year, December 21 or 22, and lasts until March 20 or 22, the beginning of spring, marked by the vernal equinox, when day and night are equal in length. In the United States, this winter's solstice occurs on December 21 at 2:21 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, 7:21 P.M. Greenwich Mean Time. Those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, today celebrate the beginning of the summer season.

Nice article, why the picture of Natalie Portman?

Posted by: Robert Carver at December 12, 2005 03:44 PM

Posted by: Vincent at December 12, 2005 04:04 PM

umm. That's not Sinead O'Connor, that's Natalie Portman. Wrong baldie.

Posted by: jumanji at December 12, 2005 06:55 PM

Natalie Portman is no Sinead O'Connor...

Posted by: Siobhan at December 12, 2005 08:35 PM

Not all bald women are Sinead O'Connor. That is, Natalie Portman is not Sinead O'Connor. Neither is Melissa Etheridge after chemo. Neither is Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. Sinead O'Connor is quite famous -- and quite thirty nine years old and quite Irish. Natalie Portman is a twenty four year old Long Island Jew. Not to nit-pick, but that's a big mistake. Get your shit together Village Voice photo department.

Posted by: Randall Snare at December 12, 2005 10:08 PM

I don't believe you should be so hard on Sinead. Rastafarianism is not a race-based faith system; it based in one's heart. One love, one heart.

As a avid and passionate reggae fan who is well-versed in the history of reggae and its artists, I admire the Sinead's ability to render such moving "remakes" of these classic reggae songs. Furthermore, the fact that Sly and Robbie decided to collaborate with her speaks volumes; who is a better judge of anyone's reggae or rasta merit than these guys? Why not be much harsher in your criticism of these new age raggamuffin dancehall reggae artists who have destroyed the spirit of the music with their obsessive focus of consumption and bling bling. No doubt, Sinead clearly displays and pays homage to the "true" spirit of reggae on this album.

Posted by: at December 14, 2005 09:29 AM

um, yes, how is it SUPPOSED to be a picture of Natalie Portman? I don't think the use of inimitable is ironic.

Posted by: meg at December 14, 2005 10:05 AM

it's not very funny, if it is supposed to be a joke...

Posted by: at December 14, 2005 10:38 AM

it's not a joke. it's just wrong. "inimitable" is a word used to describe someone or something so singular that it or she cannot be copyable. so the caption on any photo is inevitably saying "here is a photograph of sinead o'connor, who is so singular, she cannot be copied."

if the editors were inexplicably trying to ALSO send a wry (and incredibly off-point) message to natalie portman to stop trying to copy sinead o'connor (why on earth???), the caption presumably have to be recast as a declaration, as in, "sinead o'connor is inimitable (even though some try)" or some such.

in any case, this really seems like simple retardation - either on the part of a photo editor, or a lexically challenged word-editor. in either case, two modern words: duh and Gawker.

Posted by: Anna Xenides at December 14, 2005 12:13 PM

Last year, the tracking Web site at http://www.noradsanta.orgexternal link received 912 million hits from 181 countries, and the Santa Tracking Operations Center answered nearly 55,000 phone calls on Christmas Eve.

According to NORAD lore, the tradition began in 1955 when Sears-Roebuck placed an ad in The Gazette in Colorado Springs telling kids to dial a number if they wanted to talk to Santa.

But the number was one digit off. When the first call came to NORAD's predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command, Col. Harry Shoup told an eager child he would check the radars for Santa.

Even if it doesn't have a plot, though, all video games have a narrative. It isn't necessarily a narrative built of characters having their adventures, but, well, the narrative path of SMB3 involves a few easy levels, discovering a few strange quirks, changes in pace, introduction of novel effects, all set up with a certain rhtyhm, all executed with a certain visual and musical style, with a certain type of interaction between the player and the character, and developed over the course of probably hundreds of plays. Finally getting through a level can have the force of a great restatement of theme in a Beethoven symphony; discovering a vine leading up to a cloud area can work like the bridge of a Beatles song. In fact, it might be easier to talk about the art and interpretation of a video game in terms of music, since both are abstract and both are, at least these days, generally made familiar through repetition. Focusing on the "plot" is like focusing on the lyrics of a pop song -- sure, it's there, and sure it can be great, but very often it just isn't really the point, and isn't where (most of) the art lies.

wow, i didnt know my messages would get so much attention, i guess i should just calm down with this whole xmas junk and try to be a little more careful, i relize with every 'ying' there will be a 'yang', so all these negative comments are complementry to mine, no problem.....such an issue is not gonna get more senseful if dont take it to the extreme, and thats what we all doing, taking are opinions and comparing/contrasting with others.....all i have to say is that your stupid 'quoting' ability is hypocrysy (i claim to be a hypocryt in many ways myself), much what jesus warned us about, and that all i ultimately hope that we all dont become........yes i claim i have a high IQ, but i only mentioned it just incase people thought i might be some 'stupid' to sociately standards......such things like these webpages remind me of my Mensa Meetings, and that being said, this is all healthy discussion, each opinion and idea on here is just as equal and important as mine, but thats not the issue...the issue is that we are on earth for a blink if a period, dont invest too much in this earth, for we are only leasing it.

anyhow, the only reason why i came on this site and why my intial entry contains signs of anger is because prior to that entry, i just came back from the mall and while i was there, i was in a store (american eagle) and as i was paying for my purchase, i said thank you and merry christmas, and when the girl wanted to say merry christmas back(seeing that she was wearing a cross), she hesitated and said 'merry holidays' confused whether or not her manager that was standing next to her was gonna get mad if she didnt follow company policy and say 'merry christmas'.....thats what got me pissed, and as soon as i got home, i googled 'fucking secularism' and this page was in the search result.....so there you go......thast why i was pissed off and i hope no one quotes me cause quoting me would just prove that you have no argument of ur own, just a reaction to what i say, and if u dont have anything original to say, then dont re-iterate what i did, and no, i wont explain what i write in my comments, i stated above before that i am so-called condescentarianism ...whatever

anyways, merry christmas and i hope you all see the light of christ

and just for the record, to whomever wants to 'kick me in the nut', go ahead........i can practice my football and rugby skills on you considering its the off season and i havent channeled my physically strength on anyone yet for a while ;), besides my girlfriend :)

cheers all and merry christmas.....and like i said, bring on the 'yangs'

OK space boomerang trap of doom is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. What is wrong with people who draw comic books? Why can't superheroes ever get into mundane situations, like for example a villain with a gun. I just can't take these things very seriously when they are going to go to the lengths of ridiculous that involve shooting the Flash onto the moon via boomerang. I mean, why not a fucking rocket? Why not just kill him to begin with??

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 30 December 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Don't even try to tell me that setting the Flash on fire, or purchasing an off-licence rocket from the Soviets, is less cost effective than a giant boomerang, I'm already researching that angle and finding it's untrue.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 30 December 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Also it seems like it just leaves it wide open for the Flash to come right back, assuming the boomerang works as expected.

God.

Two things bother me: 1) the assertion that people who aren't fans of hip-hop gauged their entire objective framework of the genre exclusively from the standard Mass Media outlet channels 2) That hip-hip is somehow "innovative".
Though I'm not a fan I'd like to think I had a pretty good working knowledge of hip-hop - the suface tensions and rumblings from the substrata. This however has not changed my overall lack of interest. A sly turn of a phrase, an interesting sample, experimental experimentation, rhythmic acrobatics bordering on the asymetric - still are not enough to make me a regular listener.

I may be wrong on this (and I take this opportunity to note that I am a finite being not capable of trasnversing time and space on a whim - there are events that I am going to miss) but I'm not familiar with any "innovations" in hip hop that hasn't been done elsewhere. Prefuse 73, who I am a fan of, sounds very reminiscent of glitch electronica and Ambient as espoused by the likes of Autechre and Mouse on Mars. Even the more experimental offerings from outfits like cLOUDDEAD, Boom Bip, Telephone Jim Jesus, and Attwenger leave me underwhelmed. Can sample-based music be entertaining? Of course! Solex, Tipsy, and Messur Chups come to mind. Originality isn't so much as big an issue if what is presented is presented creatively and makes for interesting listening. In the end I think that's really all that matters.

Actually, no he isn't. Diplo, Dabyre, Oktopus,Deadalus, and Restiform Bodies come to mind. The all do interesing things which I can enjoy on some level - Though not enough to make me a permanent fan. And with all do respect I don't remember discussing an inherent skill level required for ANY genre. Racism? This is usually the point where reational discussion devolves into slander and I move on, but I feel as though I can reason with you. In my post I actually defended hip-hop as more than capaple of providing an enjoyable listening exprience, even though I may have heard such elsewhere.

also, sexual attraction often has to do with familiarity, and so clearly you're more likely to be attracted to someone of your own culture (note the word culture i.e. not necessary race)

Well, I often find both Asian and black folks attractive, and it might be exactly because to me they're "exotic"; Finland's immigrant population is rather small, so the exoticness comes from that.

Hi every1 I am a real Heavy Metalist, Rock, Blues, Latin, Orchestra and Jazz guitarist and bass player and also a highly committed Christian. CAN CHRISTIAN MUSIC REALLY BE ALTERNATIVE. As a composer I put up a few rulz:
1/ Every song must have a clear open confession that

Jesus Christ is LORD and God
The Holy Spirit is LORD and God
God the Father is LORD and God

If this is not clear in your songs then all you are doing is entertaining just like pubs, beer, drugs and sex. How can I say this . I have been there until my LORD brought me out.

2/ As I said all lyrics must be clear. It is no use rocking out (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) if the lyrics cannot be heard clearly by the audience/congregation.

Example: WHITECROSS is one of the best christian metal bands I have heard. They are full on yet 1/all lyrics are clear and easy to understand. 2/ besides not being afraid to confess their LORD their lyrics are firmly grounded in Biblical Scriptures.

No Christian musician should compromise their work or be afraid to confess their LORD. These rulz are simple but require guts.

I talked abour metal coz that takes it to the Xtreme. Having said that all styles are accepted before our LORD because music is a universal language and there are way to many people judging over this matter. If its rock that comes out of your heart and you give it to the LORD then that excellent, if it's rap that comes from your heart and you give it to the LORD - AWSOME, if it is blues ,latin, classical....etc you get the drift. IF YOU ARE SINCERELY GIVING IT TO THE LORD AND NOT JUST PARTYING AROUND THEN NO ONE HAS ANY RIGHT TO JUDGE Don't get me wrong the LORD doesn't mind you partying AS LONG AS YOU INVITE HIME TOO AND KEEP HIM WITH YOU.

Seeya Guyz
Any further questions, abuse, insults, death threats, kisses, hugs etc hit the email.

PS Not many people will like this but the greatest songs ever written were (No not Stairway to Heaven - who said that)

1/ The Psalms: By Israel's greatest king King David
2/ The old Hymns: By men and woman who feared God.

Today we sing about I love Jesus and the devil's gonna die (so what. That is shallow we know all that).

The Psalms and the Hymns sing about I luv Jesus alright but they also sing about His death, His burial, His Ressurrection, His Coming also His Mercy His Judgement, Faith ane the Holy Spirit.

Comatose kitties and falling pussies...., April 10, 2005
Reviewer: Nathan Christian (Scottdale, PA USA) - See all my reviews

I have had to watch this over and over and each time there is something goofy I missed the first time or the previous time. It is a strange movie, but a fun romp. It is funny watching guys wear dresses and not be drag queens. I roared when the Doc visited one of his patients at home and she had comatose cats all over the house, even hanging from the ceiling. She was happy, like God was rubbing her tummy, she said. It reminded me of the episode of Mama's Family when Ilona's cat dies and she freeze dried it.It also was outrageous to see the guy denying he was gay but the person playing his wife was a man in a dress! The only character I didn't like was Cancer Boy. I think he was pasiing out tumors or something at one point. Luckily, that character was only on a minute or so.Get this and watch the fun!

Reminds me of the time a friend of mine had just shaven her head bald, and she said, "No one will fancy me now...", and I tried to cheer her up, and ended up saying, "Don't worry, a lot of militant dykes would probably fancy you!". Or the other time another friend said, "No guy will ever want to have sex with me again!", and again I tried to be cheerful and said, "You're wrong, there's probably bunches of pensioners who would.".

The bottom line: I'm not good with compliments.

I kept bothering my friends and coworkers about this a while back but they just couldn't see the conspiracy of bad writing. What's up with the super-intelligent Jewish mathematician stereotype in movies and television, and what is the relationship to Judd Hirsch?
Jeff Goldblum plays ridiculous mathematician in Jurassic Park. He then plays a computery dude in Independence Day. The actor portraying his character's father? Judd Hirsch. Currently Judd Hirsh is on the television show "Numb3rs" where he plays the father of two sons -- one is an FBI agent, the other is a MATHEMATICIAN.

Predictable casting or bad stereotype?

Initially I was encouraged, the frog's wide throated emissions had an almost sympathetic similarity to my father's expostulations upon the insistent, engulfing matter in question: that of getting an actual "job". I had high hopes thereof promulgating a mutually beneficial discourse. These hopes proved intially well founded; my father and "teh frogGG!1!xo" (as my net-literate sister had wittily named him) found that they had much mutual interest, and agreed heartily upon the subject of "the birch". Teh frogGG!1!xo was particularly vocal upon the subject of "the fucking dirty gypsies", my father nodded downwardly. We took this as a sign of approval.

Problems first arose when, in honour of the fine festival of Easter, my mother baked an eight hundred foot rabbit consisting mostly of sweetened pastry strips. The frog, a devout Protestant, led us to believe via a systematic mixture of swellings, croaks and increased posture that this offended him (we later discovered via a mutual friend that he was a strictly Calvinist frog! My, were our faces as red as his poisonous belly, or what?!?!). He used his ill-developed front legs to drag the words "idolatrous papists LOL" in the patch of damp sand which only the night before had been dumped before our devoutly sandless and utterly landlocked household by a disgruntled tradesman.

From here on out things went from bad to worse. Soon we realised that frogs and humans couldn't actually communicate, and from there it was only a short step for even my parents to deduce that I had been hidden behind an overly large rock bun for several weeks, ventriloquising my dissatisfaction through a bemused amphibian. I am now written out of my father's fabulous will, and I hope you're happy, you bastards.

You're half right, Jon. The wiki entry might help explain more of where you're coming from:

In American English, commas and periods (full stops) always go inside the quotation marks, no matter the circumstance:

He is called “HAL.”
Also called “plain quotes,” they are teardrops.

However, due the influence of computer science as explained above (see BNF rules for describing formal languages), the following is sometimes seen:

He is called “HAL”.
Also called “plain quotes”, they are teardrops.

In America at least, I have never seen full stops outside quotations marks in corrected manuscripts, books, publications, grammar primers, or any other legit formal writing. I don't know any teachers or editors that consider it proper.

HOWEVER, the placement of question marks and exclamation points depends on whether or not the punctuation belongs to the quote, so you're right about certain types of punctuation following that logic.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

In America at least, I have never seen full stops outside quotations marks in corrected manuscripts, books, publications, grammar primers, or any other legit formal writing. I don't know any teachers or editors that consider it proper.

Because.... THEY ARE TURDS. These rules are arbitrary. My scheme encodes the most meaning. Go with a winner.

Hart's Rules and the Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors call [this style] ‘new’ or ‘logical’ quoting. This returns British English to the style many other languages (including Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan, and German) have been using all along.

You don't need a period at the end of that sentence. Even though the question mark is part of the quote in that case, it doubles as an end punctuation for the sentence.

It is. It is a box every man must tick. Also, when she slaps you, you must not react, because you are such a man, you hardly felt a thing! I was crushing on old-school Hillary Clinton (in her Twenties) -- probably because she resembles my supremely attractive friend Erin (who, despite liking me, is with someone else right now and so she's horribly unattainable). Goodness gracious, I'm an absolute sucker for blondes these days. But after dropping by a bookstore yesterday where my long-time friend Molly (who is not a blonde, mind you) works -- oh goodness, she's always stunning but yesterday I really wanted to pounce on her because she looked so exceptionally scrumptious (without even trying!) and was just so bubbly and charming. I wanted to playfully tackle her behind the counter and from there on it would've been wonderfully inappropriate! Anyhow, she's invited me along to dinner and some other event with a group of her friends on Friday -- it's not a date essentially, but at heart I wouldn't mind if it twisted into one. Ooh, I just remembered that she complimented my appearance! No-one ever does that! Squee! Cuddlestein Mountain! Nuvvieworld! Okay, I'm just getting ridiculous -- I'm just excited because it's a prospect to escape social poverty with a possible hint of romance. I'm probably being too optimistic; I can't help it! I've wanted something to look forward to!

I have a ton (not literally) of boxes. We just moved from Phoenix, AZ
to Campbell, CA. If you need some boxes for moving then this is your
day! I know there are at least 3 wardrobe boxes. There should be
enough to move a small house or apartment.

The only catch is you have to come and pick them up.

Subject: REMOVED! -- FREE: Boxes

I'm sorry this has been removed because my dog just peed on the
boxes! I can't believe it...

If you still want PEE soaked boxes let me know otherwise I will be
putting them out for collection tomorrow.

If you want a dog who will love you till the end of time then this is

I got bullied in the beginning of elementary and high-school, mostly because I had to change schools a lot and was always the new kid. I usually won fights except for the one against Br*** ****ll (who was actually a friend, still kind of is - we were sparring after school and he dislocated my jaw with one kick, I did not NOT expect that whiteboy's Aikido claims were real, but holy shit they were). Usually I just took it until I gradually befriended them, then schemed and backstabbed like hell until everyone turned on them. That's pretty much been my adult life as well.

Fifty bucks seems like a lot to spend on an experiment. The glass bulb model seems like it's more for the enthusiast. I'd go with the first link you posted, because of this:

The strong vibration at the tip makes for great clitoral stimulation as well.

So even if you lose, you win.

Also, in my experience, fifteen dollar vibrators are juuuust right. Spend $50 on a sex toy, and you end up with some complicated jelly french tickling thing that is fun for about ten minutes, and then sends you back to your old reliable vibrator to finish off.

Is this only a celebrity-based game? Cause otherwise my answer will probably always be "my dad." I mean, I dunno, if it's between my dad and Son of Sam or something, I might feel more comfortable with my dad, cause he loves me and everything. But still. Also is this restricted to our own sexual orientations? Cause if not I might have to say it's Goatse. Or Muhammad Ali. Except possibly you could get with Goatse without ever actually touching him. That'd be a paradox, I dunno if that counts. Even if it's just women, I dunno, I saw this woman with a fat baby on Maury Povich once where I'd probably rather get with my mom. I mean, if we had to, we could get through it. As a family, you know. Plus what if I was really grossed out by the fat-baby lady, and she could tell, and she got really violent about it? I mean, are there guards here? Do they know you're being forced, or do you actually have to pretend like you're into it? I mean, I'd probably pretend I was into it either way, just to be polite, but still. Also does there have to be kissing and stuff, or could you just be all like "a sex act is officially achieved here, we're done?" Oh and what about people with diseases, like horrible skin conditions or degenerative stuff? Or really super-old people?

It's probably just celebrities, though, isn't it.

Future plans?

Graham: Well, the most immediate thing is going to be a CD on Corpus Hermeticum, which will be called Wax-work Echoes, and is the stuff we've been working on with Tim over the last six months, and I think it's our best material ever. Tim has brought a new edge to proceedings, and we sound more together as a unit, and playing live should be easier now as well.

Darren: Dry Leaf Discs has just issued two new 7"s, our one, and a record by the No Neck Blues Band, which is quite an astonishing piece of work. They are (or were) an undocumented NYC ensemble who have been specialising in a lot of free-energy sound broadcasts, and recently played with The Dead C. on their US tour. I think they are going to become very popular, so if anyone's interested - play at 33.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I LET THOSE FUCKING HUCKSTERS CON ME WITH THIS SNAKE OIL BULLSHIT, THREE HOURS OF DOGS STARING BLANKLY TO A DELIGHTFUL LITE JAZZ SOUNDTRACK, MOTHERFUCK YOU!!!!!!!!

(I watched the first 20 minutes in the vain hope that it would transform into something watchable, as if they had the REAL Puppy Bowl just waiting around the corner. I switched back later for the kitty halftime show but it turned out to be more of the same horseshit, except with disco music instead of Starbucks bluegrass. I have cats, I can just fuck around with them whenever I want.)

(I probably deserved this, as I read the Directv info box description beforehand and elected to believe it wasn't meant to be read literally [it was]. There were only two words: "Puppies play".)

Basically, here is the deal
1)Goku can move instantly, without hesitation, which is infinitely faster than the speed of light, Superman cannot.
2)Supes at his mightiest can juggle planets...Goku can destroy galaxies
3)Goku has trained under Gods and surpassed them in ability and power. He is a master martial artist, who has devoted his life to improving his combat abilites...Superman has nowhere near that kind of skill.
4)All of Goku's powers are innate...Superman relies largely upon the sun, which can be destroyed and Goku can survive in space.
5)Goku is resistant to extreme temperatures and gravities.
6)Goku can move so fast that he leaves images of himself in several spots, simply because light cannot keep up with his movements.
7)Goku is a tactical genius, born from a race of fighter geniuses and he can learn his opponents abilities.
8)Goku has super enhanced senses and is also telekinetic and telepathic.
9)Goku *lives* to fight and has the strenth of will to completely annhilate his opponents.
In conclusion...Goku would school Superman, beat his ass silly, and then bang Lois Lane afterwards.
Superman is better off fighting Batman or someone he can beat.

Czech Rupublic - Awoke to find scrotum covered in ticks, drowned them in rum.

Warsaw. Can't stop scratching. Eyes mad with pain. Now living in basement beneath animal fur store.

Prague - Wept from sores. Spent two days literally stuck to public toilet.

Belgrade - Took part in small revolution. In exchange for services, given sewing needle tattoo of black bear with assault rifle. I am told this represents freedom. Bear also has a large penis.

Berlin - Need help. Must find Dan. Please, someone.

Bratislava - Lost anal virginity to a crucifix.

Croatia - Slept in castle of man who claims his great grandfather wrote 'Dracula'. Murdered him with a wooden stake while he slept.

Bruges - Became embroiled in pedophile ring. Did not indulge in own product.

Moscow - Killed bear with cudgel, now wear skin as prize.

"Blue Lines" Vs. "OK Computer"

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 19 February 2006 07:44 (twenty years ago)

sublime was not the worst band ever. they were, by far, the best band ever. they started their own style of music. brads voice was magical. the guys were cool. im guessing most of the people saying they were the worst band ever are homosexual. or else they are just not down for partying, having a good time, or just chilling, because that is what sublime was all about. 311 is a decent band too. im from omaha where they are from so i used to like them a lot but ive heard they are dickheads and theyre music kinda got old so i can somewhat see people saying they are bad. i read somewhere that sublime was playing a concert with 311 and 311 was being snotty because they had a big tour bus and sublime was just in their van so after sublime played 311 was doing sound check and their sampler was on stage and brad deleted all their samples. thought that was kinda funny. but you fags that dont like sublime need to chill out and if you dont like them i guess thats your problem but dont talk shit. and whoever said they have a fake reggae style is a big fagget. they loved marley man, thats all. everyone i know loves marley, he was the man. and its not like they are completely reggae, they just throw a little bit of reggae in with everything else. if you cant appreciate that i guess its based on your own taste in music but dont say theyre fake reggae. you guys are all gay. peace.

I don't demand compliments. I just think that musicians should support one another and stop using exuses for why they don't.
There is something wrong with these people.
there is something wrong with people who only support less talented people.
they compliment untalented people.
that is what is wrong here.
they don't compliment talented people and ignore them and then compliment untalented people.
that is why the music on the radio is sooooooooooo bad. the people who run the show, only compliment untalented people.

has anyone got any reedits or remixes of Killing in the Name Of by Rage Against the Machine.
