i am skint and am getting broadband next week, so will be doing a bit more downloading than i have before, even though i've moaned about it in the past (hell, i've never grumbled about people using it as a try-before-you-buy thing and that's what it will be for). in any case macs are a bit of a pain to use for this aren't they. how do i go about it? teach me some lessons please...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

try before you buy, my arse. You know you will save up money to pay for all the tracks you have downloaded and end up spending it all on an ipod, so lets be honest eh? You are looking for www.limewire.com. Or something called winmx which apparently gives access to both windows and mac users at the same time.

i already have an ipod and all the tech gadgets i need

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

do you have osx? you might want to try acqu1s1t1on (replace the 1s with is).

maura (maura), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

there's soulseek on OS9 which is not as good as the PC version, but it'll do for now. you can also use soulseek on osx but i'm dumb/can't seem to use it. another thing i use is DC Connect - which doesn't have that much music, but loads of mac programs. i'm also on filepile.org. the other programs are shite or i'm not using'em properly.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i've heard mlmac is good but i can't get it to work at all

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Acquisition for single tracks, Bit Torrent for albums/bootlegs.

anode (anode), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

please also bear in mind anyone giving advice that i am a total spastic when it comes to computers so don't be afraid to explain things in a layman-like fashion

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

does acquisition work in osx 1.5 or will i have to upgrade to jaguar and are all these graphic-interface, simple to use things that don't require fink and all that other stuff i can't get my head round!?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't need to upgrade to jaguar, no. and you can find the program (it's pretty easy to install) at versiontracker.com

maura (maura), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

if you have osx you should definitely make the effort to get slsk, it's about 1000 times better than anything else out there. does slsk classic work on osx? that's the os 9 client i believe.

if you can use DC (which nat's post suggests you can) then you'll be interested in the uk garage hub on that, loads of sets off deja etc etc...

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, i can't get soulseek for osx to work at all, no sirree...
what do you have to do with it. i can get it up and running in OS 9 tho

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i have soulseek running under panther. there are guides on how to do this under unix on the web. just follow the directions, dummies.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

FWIW, I hated the slsk OS X experience, not worth following the guides and waiting ten years for everything to compile.

Also, you may want to give IRC a shot, depending on your tastes. Finding a good channel for you chosen genre(s) is difficult, but it's the best thing for completists and obscurantists since AudioGalaxy's demise. The Direct Connect experience is very similar, but then you'll have to deal with anal hub admins.

anode (anode), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

soulseek classic doesn't connect on osx but if i use it i can always just boot up in 9.2... not exactly too much of a trial. cheers toby, nat et al...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

waiting 5 hours for nicotine to compile under OS X is worth all the music you can steal. stop being babies.

Sure, except there's other options that don't make you wait in huge queues or make searching a pain or give you clunky X11 GUIs.

anode (anode), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

no, not really. if you want full, complete albums--FOR FREE, then i do not think waiting in a queue is much of an issue. you people are spoiled fucking brats.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

hey dave stelfox, do this:

http://www.captnswing.net/howto/nicotine/

it takes a couple hours to complete (tho most of the time the computer's doing its own thing & you can even be doing stuff in other programs at the same time), but it's pretty easy if you follow the step-by-step and no other mac p2p even comes close. the best for sure.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

amen.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, go here. Acql1te is another version of Acqu1s1t1on (replce 1s with is of course). The problem I've heard with the latter is that they hassle you to pay shareware, yet it's open source, so a lot of folks have had a problem with that. Acql1te is completely free. Not only that, but I have OSX and this program has given me no problems (there's a trick to connecting to more networks I can pass on to you if you decide to use it).

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, replace 1's with i's, that is.

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, just do as s1ocki says. I can't stress this enough.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
When trying to download XCode Tools v1.0 CD, I get a whole load of dmgpart.bins. What do I do witth these (now that I've downloaded them) in order to install the whole thing?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 5 April 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, after typing sudo gcc_select 3.3 in X11 I get a message

sudo: gcc_select: command not found

JoB (JoB), Monday, 5 April 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
JoB-
You'll need to mount all the disks, which should be pretty easy, then run the installer. I think you need to get that step out of the way before you can get the second

Also check the moron's guide. It took me two attempts, but sticking to the guide will get you through it.

Elliott (ebb), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Elliott, but in the meantime this has made it all a lot easier.
