I've heard people say that there was a huge crossover fanbase between people like Merzbow and grindcore.

of course, we have to wait for FREEDOM LOVING Americans to wake up to get responses to this.

Where is the populist japanese punk/thrash/grind music? All I see is referencing of highbrow jnoise, High Rise clones and nu-jmetal.

are you wanting precedents to Japanese grindcore? I mean, there was a lot of cool Japanese underground music in the 80s, but the stuff I listen to isn't "noisy". Actually, the closest thing I can think of to 80s "grindcore" is YBO2.

A Japanese grindcore band toured Britain with Napalm Death not long after 'From Enslavement To Obliteration' came out. I think they were called S.O.B.

I know Napalm Death had a critical role in the formation of BOREDOMS...

Anybody ever hear Bathtub Shitter? They are/were supposed to be excellent grind.

How about Japanese underground synth-pop from the '80s

Yes. "Lifetime Shitlist" is one of my the early locks for my Voice poll. Results for others may vary. They've a website with a good sampling although the CD I have is better. The band covers Witchfinder General but only a purist would recognize it.

well, hell, 80s japanese hardcore is cool. check out:
s.o.b. - check out "symphonies of brutality" or any compilation of their early material, it's thrashy hardcore stuff, very fast with shrieky vocals. they did a split with (prime, dorrian/steer-era) napalm death. new stuff allegedly sounds like fear factory.

g.i.s.m. - metally hardcore, second album is more metal.

confuse - totally distorted, sick hardcore. check out "indignation" for great noisy shouting hell inspired by discharge, crass, etc. they've got a song called "absolute power of armaments old man."

there a bunch more i absolutely can't think of right now (rose rose? aburadako? gauze?) and know precious little about anyway.

nowadays, i gotta recommend:

anadorei "pussy cannibal holocaust" - feminist (?) noisy punk stuff, with a bunch of very short songs and a 15 minute cover of sister ray complete with organ. the band name means "asshole slave."

clotted symmetric sexual organ (c.s.s.o.) "are you excrements?" - used to be a grindcore band, now they mix japanese heavy psych elements (think high rise & acid mothers temple) and noise with grind. really, really good.

Jon, you weren't referring to Hanatarash and Masonna as "highbrow," WERE YOU?

I find it strange that those Japanoise threads listed upthread have no mention (that I saw) of Violent Onsen Geisha, who is just as important and/or interesting as Merzbowel. I'll just chalk it up to his cds being hard to find these days.

merzbowel huh huh huh
