Has the second edition of Burn To Shine been released yet?

van nostrum (Buck Van Smack), Saturday, 9 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I have a feeling that there won't be another one. If they do go ahread with that series, they should include more diverse acts and give them more time. The DVD was WAY too short.

Kids Are Alright - seconded. Guaranteed to make you pull out all your old albums & love them all over again.

Westway to the World is another good'un.

Found this link regarding Burn To Shine...apparently they are finishing up the editing on #2. http://www.trixiedvd.com/

I like about half of the American Whistle Test release.

Bill Withers makes it worth owning single-handed, though.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Saturday, 9 July 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Withers makes it a good purchase but Marley & the Wailers makes it essential.

The Kids Are Alright is indeed incredible, maybe the best I've ever seen.

also good

Guided by Voices--Watch Me Jumpstart
Fugazi (I forget what it's called)
Looking for a Thrill: An Anthology of Inspiration
Pink Floyd--The Wall
Pavement--Slow Century
DiG!
The Flaming Lips--Fearless Freaks
The Rolling Stones--Cocksucker Blues
Led Zeppelin--How the West Was Won
Fantasia
Jandek (I forget what it's called)
The Ramones--Rock & Roll High School
The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization, Part II (somewhat depressing, but worth it for Ozzie's poor pouring skills)
Heavy Metal

The Moog one is excellent!

I wouldn't be me if I didn't nominate Judas Priest's 'Electric Eye' as a great DVD to put on when you're feeling silly and drunk.

WattStax is available on DVD, it's "exceptionaly (sic) good"

I wouldn't say it were incredible by any means, but it was far more pithy and enjoyable than I expected--the 'Looking For a Thrill' DVD out recently as a fundraiser for Greenpeace. Unique presentation, as well--not a linear documentary, but organised in a way seemingly inspired by the internet--intervnews accessible by different categories and in different orders.

I'm a fan of Bjork's videos (more like short art films), so 'Volumen' is quite a steal.

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Recently, the Super Furry Animals Storybook one, and the Basement Jaxx Videos one.. as far as music videos go.

Music docs I'll get to, later... once the Minutemen one is released.

donut e- (donut), Sunday, 10 July 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget:

Born To Boogie - T.Rex
Family Jewels - AC/DC
Some Kind of Monster - Metallica
Mayor of Sunset Strip
Tom Dowd & The Language of Music

If you are thinking of getting Björk's 'Volumen', order it from one little indian's webshop right now and you can get any of her other DVD's (buy one get one) free with the Medulla videos DVD. It's some kind of deal to make up for the different ways and times the Medulla documentary was released in the UK (alone) and the US (as a double-pack with the 5.1 Audio DVD-A version).

I'm not 100% sure if this include Volumen/GH (I'm poor and don't have either) but it's worth a try.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone seen the new (I think) theremin one?

Cheek0 (Cheek0), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

They get hyped on the other threads also, but the Michel Gondry Director's Label dvd and Daft Punk's Intastella 5555 are truly excellent. Gondry in particular has made so many good videos for widely varying artists, and the short films and commercials are class too.

Bill A (Bill A), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

The Kids are alright DVD is very fine.

DVD2 though, at least half is "oh I cleaned up the original film by doing this" style TERMINAL BOREDOM!

It does have the 5.1 mix of "Who are you" which is indispens.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

The Oxcam, Rogcam, Petecam, Mooncam thing is good though. Or it will be, if I ever watch it properly. You can also listen to the Ox's bass on its own, which is a bit like the lipreading scene in 2001.

The other WHO one, 35 Years, is good too. Marvel at Roger Dlatrey discussing Dippity Doo. It goes on too long (the DVD) but still.

Stone Roses has its moments (the TV bits), The Jam is good, Led Zep is the king in terms of presentation, Style Council is a missed opportunity, but still good, I think, as a kind of postcard from the 80s.
