strike of the beast, Friday, 2 September 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

i don't know if this is a troll or not, BUT..

black flag "the first four years" and "damaged"
bad brains "rock for light"
circle jerks "group sex"
assfactor 4 "sports" and self-titled
palatka "the end of irony"
nation of ulysses "13 point program to destroy america" (maybe a stretch, and I like their second album more, but they're still one of the best "punk" bands of the nineties. and they're on dischord, obv.)

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 2 September 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

hEY thanks for the list man, I am not a troll I don't think so anyway, I just read about Bad Brains they sound kewl, I didn't ever think I'll like any music except for metal my favourite song is betray now!

strike of the beast, Friday, 2 September 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

black sabbath is one of my favorite bands in the world.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

You might dig the Germs "GI" album - it's not like Minor Threat in some ways (real dark, more chaotic) but it's got some of the same energy

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

KEWL my favourite album is MAster Of Reality, Sweet Leaf was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar, my favourite band is Iced Earth or Against Me but only there early stuff.

strike of the beast, Friday, 2 September 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh I will check out the Germs I like dark music alot ;)

strike of the beast, Friday, 2 September 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the germs are great.

also,
how could i fucking forget:
THE MISFITS (original line-up; if you've heard the last few "misfits" records--THEY DO NOT COUNT.)

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Hey I already love the Misfits I didnt know they were hardcore but thanks for the info!

strike of the beast, Friday, 2 September 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

PPPP OTM

How bout: Songs to fan the flames of discontent - Refused

Marty Innerlogic (marty innerlogic), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

you will love bad brains. ian admits minor threat learned everything from them - he even let them rehearse in his basement back in the day, and the minor threat kids sat on the sofa and watched.

stevie (stevie), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

7 Seconds

latebloomer: not just indie rock but also rap, industrial and pop. (latebloomer), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Poison Idea - get the Best Of CD - it's not really a best of - it's a compilation of 3 of their records from the 80s and is hardcore all the way through.

They hated Minor Threat though!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments
Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Melvins & Butthole Surfers don't really fit here, although those are of course great albums, and you should get them anyway!

DRI - Dirty Rotten LP or Dealing With It, especially if you like metal, as they started mixing metal with hardcore on their 2nd album. Unfortunately the results were a bit crap after that.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

they fit if you like Black Sabbath.

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Uniform Choice - Screaming For Change
Turning Point - It's Always Darkest Before The Dawn...
Burn - Burn EP

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Good point. But they're not hardcore that sounds like Minor Threat.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I was follow the questioner, not the question.

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough.

Some more suggestions:

MDC - Millions of Dead Cops
GBH - City Baby Attacked By Rats
Social Unrest - Complete Studio Recordings vol 1

Ellis otm!

Here's some stuff that rubs up on stuff this kid likes:

Stooges - Fun House
Boredoms - Soul Discharge
Reversal of Man - Discography

Fushigina Blobby: Blobania no Kiki (ex machina), Friday, 2 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Ellis that is a great list!

That Bl'ast album is not underrated by me!

Some more:

Adrenalin OD - Sittin' Pretty
White Cross - Deaf, Dumb & Blind
Die Kreuzen - s/t

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Negative FX/Last Rights - Discography.

Maybe some more UK stuff - although this stuff tends to be a lot noisier than the US stuff -

Chaos UK - Riot City Years
Disorder - Complete Disorder

These bands (along with Discharge) were a massive influence on a lot of European & Japanese hardcore:

Gauze - Coretic (hard to find this unfortunately)
Confuse - Old God, Meet New God
Various - Varning For Punk #1
Agent Orange/Jezus & the Gospelfuckers - Discography (this is the Dutch band, not the Californian one!)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 September 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Denny Lethargy (NOT Denny Vertigo)

Stormy Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 2 September 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, i'm glad i'm not the only person who likes Bl'ast!.

Some more :

Negative Approach-7" (i'd say the full discography but i never really liked the "tied down" album)

Government Issue-boycott stabb.

Various-this is boston, not l.a.

Negative FX-discography.

Various-not so quiet on the western front.

Kraut-discography.

Cro-Mags-age of quarrel.

Life's Blood-discography.

Rorschach-remain sedate.

Rorschach-needlepack.7" (ah, fuck it just get the Rorschach discography).

No Comment-discography ("downsided" 7" is probably the best hardcore 7" of the 90s).

Ellis, Friday, 2 September 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I'd imagine that this kid probably doesn't have a record player or access to a good punk rock vinyl store.

Fushigina Blobby: Blobania no Kiki (ex machina), Friday, 2 September 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but kids today don't buy records anyway do they?! You can get all this stuff on Soulseek!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 September 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

You can get Infest live video footage from soulseek too !

Ellis, Friday, 2 September 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Shit, I don't even own approx half of the stuff I just listed! But then I don't have access to a good punk vinyl record store either. Not for old school hardcore anyway. I don't think there is one in London. The only punk record stores I've been to here mainly just sell Epifat crap.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 September 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Olneyville Sound System - What is True, What is False

Fushigina Blobby: Blobania no Kiki (ex machina), Friday, 2 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Sam K, Saturday, 10 September 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Dear Strike,

Glad to see you are getting into some great music. You have many happy years of listening ahead of you. But I must ask one thing: why do people of your generation often write "cool" as "kewl"? Is that how you pronounce it, as "q - ull"?

Yours,

Josh
