although nothing funny going on at the mo...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

here's one:

I was deejaying at a college function many years ago, playing a freeform set that was being well received, when some dirty hippie freshman told me that my music was "bumming everyone out". Normally, I would have politely disagreed and sent him on his way, but it a beutiful day, the set was going really well, and I was drunk on whiskey, so I told him "back the fuck off now or I'll slit your fucking throat."
I am not proud of this memory.

There should be cake for all. And I'm making the coffee. No-one except my Zen coffee master makes better coffee than me. You know how good my espresso is? I take a thermos of it to the finest cafes in the land, and drink it openly in front of the bastard faces of the staff, because once you've tasted this black gold, you cannot go back down to that shit. You just can't.
I'll tell you another story about my espresso. When people come round and I give them coffee, they fall into silence. A reverent silence descends. Then one of them might say, 'holy f***, this is some damn fine coffee'. That's how good it is.

I go to the best grinders, I make up my own blend, I SPECIFY the coarseness of the grind, if necessary I get the manager in, especially if I'm getting attitude from the cheese goofer at the counter.

Then, fueled with this mellow, deep, arabica, crowned with a the slightest of lemon astringencies, I come up with the most ridiculous, the most pointless posts, imaginable.

deep dark woods in wyoming, I was 16 and no coffee drinker yet. we were camping, metal coffeepot bubbling over a fire. my mom's boyfriend produced a bottle of Yukon Jack, poured a couple fingers into a couple of cups of coffee, and handed them to me and my brother. we all recited from the bottle: "Yukon Jack is a taste born of hoary nights, when lonely men struggled to keep their fires lit and cabins warm."

sen on is a great track - and it is "sen on", not "send". the original 7 was misprinted, as very often happens. still, it makes sense either way. i also really like tanya stephens on that rhythm - can't remember exactly what the track's called - ready fi me, or something similar?
loving the french vanilla right now, too. greensleeves will be putting the album out and it looks like it'll be pretty strong but for now i only have tanya, ward 21 and alozade.
anyway, i only dropped in here to refer to something cybele (one of the few people here who has anything useful to say about this music) said on this thread and am leaving again.
however i have to add, fassy, that i'm not even using these boards any more and will have no impact on your life whatsoever (unless you buy any of the newspapers i write for), so would you please keep your sarcastic, effete, unpleasant and, i'll say it again, creepy comments about me to yourself.
i don't know what the hell your obsession with me is, but get over it. for the record, i don't have much of one with you. in fact, when you're not right under my nose, i really couldn't care less about you - get it?
*sigh* i just wish this worked the other way round.
anyway, you're still not man enough to say anything to my face, so just shut it, okay?
if you do suddenly find a spine, you can mail me at the address below and we can sort this out. i don't like antipathy and confrontation, even with people i have no respect for. it's a waste of my time, so i'd rather resolve whatever the issue is. again, i don't have one with you if you just pack this shit in.

This reminds me of a bloke at my university known to no one by his real name, but to millions as The Rutherford Wanker, so called because of his habit of masturbating in the public computer rooms at Rutherford college. Apparently a couple of people noticed him doing it, once, not even while looking at porn. Just sitting there, bold as brass, knocking one off under the table and then wiping it off on the tissue IN THE FULL KNOWLEDGE THAT PEOPLE WERE WATCHING.
Then he did it the next night. And the night after. And the week after that. It became a regular thing, people would actually go to see him wank after the bar had closed. People started to run a book on how long he'd hold out for on any given night. It was a spectator sport. Then one day a porter walked in and caught them all at it, possibly alerted by the loud drunken chants of "Wanker! Wanker! Wanker!" He was kicked out of the university on the spot.

I still really heart this movie. A lot of people I know were kind of put off that finding emotion and pathos in all the po-facedness was the point, and were annoyed at being told they didn't "get it" if they thought it rang false. Fair criticism, but the emotions didn't ring false for me; perhaps I've been hornswoggled, or perhaps I've just watched too many Hal Ashby movies.

"Great big watermelons
Go round and get in your way....
Luscious pork chop bushes
Bloom right outside your door

-- andy (and...), February 26th, 2004.

Well that's easy. It was a rice pudding salesman at the world's fair ran out of milk. The man in the stall next to him was selling any old crap and offered it to the rice man to use in place of the milk, but the rice man said "No, I don't want that, it would be revolting and not like rice pudding at all". The any old crap man was offended and threw all his crap at the rice. At the same time, a vat of boiling water from the nearby water fair fell off a cart and some starving urchins started to eat the resultant gloop. They called it Rice-A-Roni. The stallholders asked them where they were getting the 'a-roni' bit from, since it bore no relation to macaroni or anything. The urchins attacked the stallholders and the fair was closed.

U&K - The new Laurie on "That 70s Show": C/D, RFD

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right, so in the blockbuster double episode where Kelso got Brooke pregnant and the immigration officer came to investigate Fes' and Laurie's wedding, a new actress was playing Laurie. Is this a permanent switch? I don't think it would be a good one. (Are these switches ever good?) She is better-looking in a bland kind of way but that seems to actually work against the character's trashiness. She doesn't have 1/5 the personality of the old Laurie. When Hyde was dissing her, she just sat there and grinned moronically/stoically. The old Laurie would have if nothing else demonstrated withering contempt just with her eyes and would have probably zinged him back and worse. And her "I'm not that trashy - I wouldn't sleep with you" to Fes was so limp and feckless compared to how the old Laurie would have delivered it. Besides, it didn't even make sense since they only got married after they slept together on the camping trip. THESE MATTERS REQUIRE IMMEDIATE DISCUSSION.

I was in a coffee shop a couple of years ago, and this weird old guy stumbled in and walked up to the kids at a nearby table and started rambling pretty
incoherently and shaking his fist a lot. The kids were trying to ignore him, but then he got down on the floor, somehow managed to execute a pretty
decent headstand, opened his legs and farted very loudly in the direction of the table. He then tumbled to the ground and said, "Let's see your mom do
that, yoga boy." The same guy once told me I had a "sunshiney smile." He is clearly insane.

i went out to eat with my folks recently. they're getting up in years (late 50s/early 60s) and their taste in food is leaning away from more unusual chowhoundy things and towards bland suburban chain restaurants. so we all went to a chili's. and my mom couldn't figure out whether she was ordering the soup or salad that came with the entree for an additional $1.99, or whether it was the soup plus salad plus entree (not an option), or whether she was just ordering the lunch-portion soup and salad combo for $4.99. if she'd actually read the menu this wouldn't have been a problem because it was all spelled out, but once the waitress came over, mom got so flummoxed she ended up ordering just the soup and salad and later bitched the waitress out wondering where her entree was (she never ordered one).

i was really embarassed. my parents are becoming THOSE PEOPLE.

i mean don't they teach you the difference between and and or in like preschool?

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 1:45 AM. (later)

I think the menus are full of too much information for people of a certain age (i.e our parents) We went to Chili's last night, and had a spot of confusion over the regular menu version versus the atkins style one (bunless hamburgers!) My parent don't read TV Guide because it "confuses" them.

-- tokyo rosemary (rosemarygilber...), March 25th, 2004 3:38 PM. (later)

This is one of the reasons my parents have started going to buffets -- the food's all right there in front of them and they can take a little of everything and not have to make any "choices" (another reason being that my mom's diabetic/Atkins and she can load up on vegetables and meat and not be stuck with a plate full of carbs she can't eat).

-- stockholm cindy (jod...), March 25th, 2004 4:56 PM. (later)

It is reasonable to be confused by menus, because menu writers are not typically members of any cultural elite themselves. "Pie with chips and peas or salad"? It's a goddamn trick question. Use commas, pricks.

It is reasonable to be confused by menus, because menu writers are not typically members of any cultural elite themselves. "Pie with chips and peas or salad"? It's a goddamn trick question. Use commas, pricks.

I've hardly ever had that happen, and if it has I've usually been able to figure it out from context -- with this example I'm pretty sure "peas or salad" is the variable.

LISTEN to what John Mayer says about Jimi Hendrix!
"Hendrix invented a kind of cool. The cool of a big conch-shell belt. The cool of boots that your jeans are tucked into. If Jimi Hendrix is an influence on somebody, you can immediately tell. Give me a guy who's got some kind of weird-ass goatee and an applejack hat, and you just go, 'He got to you, didn't he?'"

One cause of fainting is a sudden drop in blood pressure. Such a sudden drop is associated with shock. Shock is, among other things, your body's last ditch, hail-Mary response to prevent your immanent death from blood loss. Some people are just very sensitive to blood loss, or the sight of blood and it triggers this reaction.

BTW, classic. Ask any phlebotomist.

more barry classics!:

I do think it's real, and by a woman - and that Payne isn't up to date with the modern £800 quid call girl who does two or three extended tricks a week and provides conversation etc, as well as sex, and doesn't feel too ashamed or self-disgusted about it.
That isn't to say that these diaries are the gospel truth. The diarist will be hiding her tracks like mad, so I assume stuff like her hair colour, origins, background, location etc. will be false trails. She mentions no public events that I can see (surely a current diarist would be commenting on things like the Madrid bombing - there's a tip for you, Belle)) so I have a feeling that the diaries - or at least the punter action parts - are set in the past. Maybe she did this a few years ago. That would make her much safer from present exposure and explain why she can be bothered with writing a book.)

I think she is quite a good writer, and I'm glad this thread has pointed her out to me, because I will go on reading. I don't like the wishy washy bits about shoes, handbags, and pants; but I find this blog to be the only readable sex blog I've ever come across.

okay, here's my scenario. i have two computers, a powerbook and an older powermac g4. both are running panther. they're both connected to each other (and a dsl modem) via a netgear ethernet hub. when i want to transfer files and stuff between them i use appletalk, then i switch it off so i can use pppoe again, and thus access the internet.

my question is: is there anyway to do both at once? in a simple fashion? cuz i can't use appletalk and pppoe simultaneously, and it'd be totally more convenient to be able to transfer files and stuff without turning off the internet (the main inconvenience is running upstairs to change the network settings on the powermac, and then having to change them again).

thank you computer smart people.

Good reasons to faint:
*your corset is too tight
*one of the gentlemen just said 'dammy!'
*your man arrives at your door and you thought he was dead!
*he tells you he shall go mad with grief if you do not marry him at once!
*he's doing something daring and dangerous, like wrestling a tiger.
*it's a hot day on Box Hill when your party takes a stroll there.
*you have just been told that you are the legitimate heir of the Ponsonby-Wallace fortune: and that you are a duchess!
*You are in the queue to congratulate the vicar on another fine sermon, and you conveniently 'faint' into the arms of the man whom youhave decided will ask you some day for your hand in marriage. Later that day, he visits you in your bed, bearing flowers and a card.

By the way, after another listen, the Tanya Stephens record belongs in my top pantheon. No better reggae album has been made since like forever. It's also kinda dancehall and doo-wop and folk-song, fiery and horny (the sweetest love song is about a guy's huge dick)...wow.

Martin were you a counselor at any summer camps in Vermont?? Evidence: my enduring memory from that summer of D&D was that our magician, one "Anaujiram", bought a clay phallus from some pedlar outside the tavern we'd been mucking about in for half the day, getting into outlandish bets and spending all our goldpieces. Anyway Anaujiram told the DM he wanted to "rub it". It shot a wad of splooge 30 feet in the air, and our characters all looked up in stark amazement, our mouths hanging open... After a roll of the dice it was determined that our magician caught a huge wad right in his mouth. "ha ha ha!!" we all shrieked with derision. The DM glanced at us, and back at our humiliated magician. "+3 hitpoints for Anaujiram. That's pure protein."

"Don's" in Hackney(Or is it Dalston?) is run by two ebullient old men who have Italian wedding music on a continuous mix. The habit of their movements seem to have melded with the music to become a rolling oeuvre of whimsy; when they pour your coffee they make a litle flourish at the end, humming boisterously to each other and jiggling themselves distractedly on the balls of their feet. The high windows are indeterminedly opaque, and the inside looks like a horse stable painted over with yellow gloss. The food's ok.

Actually, in the first 'Austin Powers', Austin actually uses the phrase and it seems to refer to pre-sexual cleaning of the genitals. He also makes a hand flourish where the hand starts palm down and then leads with the thumb to flip palm up (while saying "how's your father"). I always assumed this hand motion simulated cleaning from the back to the front starting from behind the testicles.

That's exactly the thing, see -- that's very far removed from the stereotypical view of teenagers. You're supposed to have a livejournal where you whine about what Sandra meant when she said you "look very pretty today," and why that bitch must have meant you were ugly all the time otherwise, and how "pretty" is really kind of an insult, and math class is boring.

My dog loved beer. If we had people over on the deck and glasses were left on the ground he would just help himself. He loved it. He was a Schnauzer. Once we got fed up with him slobbering in our glasses, and put some in his water bowl. About a half bottle, which we (foolishly) judged would be a safe amount. He was most definitely drunk. He stumbled around a bit, fell coming down the deck steps, and then starting doing silly stuff like chasing nothing and then biting the ground and eating grass, which he seemed to really like. Then he puked and passed out. He had a very bad hangover later and was grumpy. Didn't stop him from going for beer again in the future, though. Sounds a lot like me there, actually.

It seems Mr.Joel had some credibility back in the earlier periods, circa THE STRANGER, but it all went horribly south circa the New-Wave-baiting GLASS HOUSES (from whence sprang the cloying "It's Still Rock'n'Roll to Me"). Y'see, you start a duplicate thread, and someone posts a link to the original one with four answers from 2001 (and they don't say anything else but the link so you're not sure if they're being helpful or irritated or just sitting back basking in the obsessive compulsive glow), so people go and revive that but by now the newer thread's already gained a few answers and they both just sort of shamble along the new answers page until one of them finally 'wins'.
Oh, the humanity etc

I swear this is true. When I was 12 a large group of girls and I coined the term wigger ,that is we made that word up. I found your site by accident and saw the word.I grew up in virginia beach ,va.I am now 26 and I cant beleive how many times I have heard this term used.I have lived in Virginia,Utah,3 cities in California ,and Missouri.Coast to coast and back. What I want to know is when is the first time you all heard the word wigger and what state?
-- shaylaa (shaylaa7...), April 13th, 2004.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh yeah here is another add on to my previous post.True definition of "wigger" is and was white kids trying to talk dress and act "Ghetto".This term does not apply to any other culture at all.We made it up because of white girls that stacked there hair and wore fila and addidas coats shoes etc.And the boys that are the equivalant to what M&M appears to be like. No offense was meant though. You had the stoners, the skaters, the grungers etc.

"In the English-language InterNet forum "I love books"
over-bid themselves the participants with short summaries of the
world-literary classical authors. The default is simple:
In maximally 25 words the book must be told. The fans of
the constantly growing Minimalisten Anthologie make neither before the
Bible nor newer works like the "Harry Potter" books stop. In
addition, a quantity nonsense develops, partially the thickest tomes
quite appropriate on the point is brought. Over Tolkiens
monumental Hobbit Saga "master of the rings" is called it about:
"small people turned out into large difficulties, during it
stolen decoration loose will want." The most beautiful
contributions often get along with a fraction of the demanded length.
Only three words hand absurd piece of "control rooms on Godot"
for Samuel Becketts: "nothing happens. Twice." "
