Old thread:
the mongrels don't want to play like that, they just want to talk to the sheepfuxors

I am totally using "oddly shaped wall" as a euphemism for people's bits.

Hi mongrels. What's the etiquette re: leading someone on that you know likes you when you're kind of on the fence? Is it wrong to suggest doing stuff together because you get along knowing they might want more?

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Depends on if you think theres any chance of you becoming equally as interested in them. If theres no chance at all, then I'd say it's a bit mean.

-- edward o

Let me see if I uderstand you correctly. You're currently sitting on the fence about showing this person your oddly shaped wall?

ratty, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Yes, that's it exactly. The problem being that I'm a nice guy (YES REALLY) and I don't want to be all leading-onny.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

You can lead a woman to the oddly shaped wall, but you can't make her drink. Sorry.

ratty, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 04:43 (twenty years ago)

Sigh no more, ladies, sigh nor more;
Men were deceivers ever;
One foot in sea and one on shore,
To one thing constant never;
Then sigh not so,
But let them go,
And be you blithe and bonny;
Converting all your sounds of woe
Into. Hey nonny, nonny.

Only sucky thing about coming home - forgetting about the Potatoes and Onions in one's pantry!

I'm real poor, but I'm up for a FAP soon.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 05:06 (twenty years ago)

ewww potatoes and onions smell pretty bad when they go rotten, in fact I can't quite decide which stink is worse.

Potatoes are RANK when they go so off they create binjuice. Onions are just oniony and pervasive.

this just in: onions "oniony"

nein Socken, do you like Pseudo Echo?

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:12 (twenty years ago)

no, i never cared much for them.

in jr high school, this one guy named dj used to argue that they were called ' the pseudo echo' and not just 'pseudo echo'.

what do you think?

for work reasons, estela. i just moved here sunday night. i'm staying at a hotel here with two other irish guys but it's on the company's bill and we should be moving into a house soon. v. quiet during the week here but apparently it gets a bit lively during the weekend and the uni is starting up here again soon.

melbournites, is there a FAPenning sat. week? i'd be on for that.

Michael B, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 08:16 (twenty years ago)

Theres an okay irish pub at the end of dean street, forget what it's acutally called.

Some of the cafes up the other end are okay too. If Cafe Gryphon is still there you should pay it a visit.

EDWARD O: totally lead them on AS LONG AS YOU SAY "I dunno if I'm as interested as you, but what do you think of this oddly shaped wall?" beforehand, then it's totally okay. ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, what's right with being proud of your country? Do the crimes of the past completely invalidate the notion of celebrating your country as an idea?

Hell, the 'american style of patriotism' you guys refer to isn't even all that American. I've been in the US for some of the more patriotic holidays, in the midst of the Bible Belt and they aren't a PATCH on the flagwaving and hollering certain subsections of Europeans involve themself with on a regular basis.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm usually very patriotic. But I don't really like the jingoistic nature of waving flags. And if a flag stands for a country, then I think burning it as a way of protesting something about the country you don't like is at least as valid as venerating the flag for all the things about the country you do like.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:07 (twenty years ago)

Maybe if we confronted the crimes of the past, then maybe I'd feel a little more patriotic.

Ditching a defaced British Blue Ensign for the Boxing Kangaroo would help too :P

Actually fuckindammit I had a fantastic time! The Paladin was crammed to the gills with old geezers who used to do Abyss years ago, I saw SO MANY people I havent seen in ages. I wisely eschewed any actual goth gear and wore bowling shirt, tank top and skirt, was good and comfy.

Dom wore fishnet with a hawaiian shirt and somehow made it look GOOD. He da man. Me and Nick got very drunk and he kept disappearing on me.

They got rid of the mezanneine cage! haha no more showoff spot for you, skanky babygoth hos!

Ive been in bed all day. Thankfully the flat's not hot at all.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Of course you don't like goth music Trayce.

gaz I'm contemplating taking up the bass again. I need to buy one first.

HAPPY INVASION DAY!

I am drinking vodka and making beef bourguingon for two beautiful, heavily tattooed women. I am in heaven.

ratty, Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:55 (twenty years ago)

I actually am serious, i dont like it. I mean 80s new wave i do, yr bauhaus and wotnot, but sisters/nephs/mission/ebm stuff? meh.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:56 (twenty years ago)

Argh, nobody is the original inhabitant of anywhere, we're all johnny-come-lately's due to wars, invasions and migrations. Now, I'm no fan of the treatment of the aboriginal people - hell, I wanna see some reconcilation and I wanna see it NOW - but the fact that shit happens shouldn't invalidate a day to celebrate a shared idea of a nation. Fark.

XPOST.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:58 (twenty years ago)

Bullshit Trayce, you had EBM and Bauhaus and SoM and Ellen Alien playing that night at yours last year!

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:59 (twenty years ago)

That is SO old skoool goth Trayce. The kids are all about Marilyn, Angelspit, NIN (still), Rammstein. I don't mind a bit of the ol' Rammstein. We went to a goth club last week. No-one over 22. There were many highlights, one of which was a goth chick doing a full-tilt interpretative dancing. Maaaaaaaagnificent.

ratty, Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:59 (twenty years ago)

I never went goth clubbing and i kind of regret it. I was one of those floppyhaired nonces bopping around at Supermarket and later, Weekender, for you Melbourne people. God, Weekender got old - same old nocturnal pale beasties swapping between each other every week and spilling beer over me to 'Disco 2000'.

No wonder I'd drive home at 3am, being proto-emo to 'How Soon Is Now?'

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:05 (twenty years ago)

What EBM Mikey? I dont own any! Also, um, dude, Ellen Alien is not goth even remotely, I can assure you (no one I know in that scene would know who she was, let alone like that "techno shit").

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:11 (twenty years ago)

EMB = electonic body music. Hmmm, that would be Front 242, DAF, Nitzer Ebb, etc. Maybe a bit of Frank De Wulf also.

Well it's funny you should say that, because I recall hearing plenty of Smiths on the old skool goth dancefloor. Not to mention '100,000 Morrisseys', who was that, Mr Floppy?

ratty, Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:13 (twenty years ago)

first para to Trayce, second to Mikey.

ratty, Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:14 (twenty years ago)

did they play...

DANCE DER MUSSOLINI DANCE DER ADOLF HITLER

??

xp mikey that sounds OK, I'd fit in well with beer-spilling pale people I think.

controversial buffalo stance (haitch), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:15 (twenty years ago)

Klatsch mit die hande!
Und tanz der mussolini!

ratty, Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:18 (twenty years ago)

See to me EBM is more yer Wolfsheim, Covenant, Apoptygma, vnv nation, and other such "its not trance, really - its goth! See how whiney the singing is! Ignore those glowsticks" music.

Which I really hate.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:19 (twenty years ago)

thank you, trayce, for the insight. but aren't sheepfuxxors welsh?

i've been accused of having an australian accent, but alas, i'm from southern california.

i will now depart your lovely thread.

nein Socken (nein Socken), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:38 (twenty years ago)

nein, Socken, Sie mussen hier bleiben! Southern California aaaaaaah such a lovely place.

ratty, Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:46 (twenty years ago)

ah well Trayce in that case I fully understand. Apoptygma shocked me with how much they sucked, when I finall got to hear it. I didn't think it was possible for music to suck that much, and I love cheese. The more cheese the better. But this was cheese with a stab at profundity, ugh, brrrrr no, get behind me you humourless friendless twomblies.

I like my EBM slower and fatter. Like me, ha. It HAS to be sexual/sly and predatory, even if it is industrial, that is fundamental. It must assist one in one's nightclub hunt for fresh meat. That reminds me - the beef bourguignon needs my attention. Excuse me.

ratty, Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:53 (twenty years ago)

Bah, I don't know. All that nonsense sounds the same to me.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 26 January 2006 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Lemme put it this way: I think I only recognised about half a dozen songs played last night. I havent even heard of half the bands some peeps I know go on about, let alone heard anything by em.

My audioscrobbler will show you I'm really an 80s new wave/nindie head of large proportions.

is lidell playing summer series kit?

no, he's playing at Marrickville Bowling Club with LIVE BAND for TEN BUCKS (allegedly, yet to be confirmed)

last night he did first song with Scott Saunders on kbds, then an hour or so of microphone-and-sampler [plus pre-recorded backing on two songs, and he had an organ which he also used twice only: played a couple of chords that he then cut up at the end of one song, and a bassline on another], then Saunders' band came back minus turntables but plus sax (so keys/sax/bass/drums) for the encore. he handed the mic down for choruses on Multiply, which I think was last

No kit - my dubby stuff tends to be extremely traditional digital dub, not particularly original sounding, just sorta sunny and fun, child friendly.

No. I guess not even the Duke of Windsor's there (not that it was very nice anyway).

Actually, Rob Bolton and I had a drink at the 'Lizard Lounge' on Chapel St. It was tolerable. I guess it would be okay on a Wednesday.

Trayce, you know any places?

I meant the Zen saying was like Fight Club in the "face death, discard the material, live in the now" sense; irrespective of the taste or otherwise of said film =)

Anyhoo. I just got an interesting email from a certain singer who is doing a certain tour in April he's put me on the door for, if anyoe else wants to come see a certain singer we all remember and lurv? ;)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 03:37 (twenty years ago)

we have a new 'dirt cheap cds' shop here in perth. do they have them in melbs? i know i've bought some stuff online from them before. anyway - they have quite a lot of cool older stuff! i confess i was surprised. i bought two beastie boys cds there the other day. they have the publishing info in spanish so god knows where they're sourced from but appear to be the real thing. haven't seen your album in there though jim.

Must be the season, or something.

do they own the whole shoot or just what they choose to publish? you might be able to hold back some for portfolios at least by not sending 'em the whole run.

I meant five words up above btw.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Well they don't pay togs, so it's sort of up to my model to pay me not them. I will certainly be keeping a few for my own portfolio, although I think the ones I hand over (50 shots starting clothed heading up to explicit) become their property entirely. I'm really just doing it as a feather in my cap kind of thing....and because it's hard to find chicks to disrobe for my photos for free.

i went to an all girls' school, there was no rooting at my year 8 camp. however, in year 12 they sent us on a camp with the students from our brother school in a belated attempt to introduce us to the opposite sex in an informal, casual setting. i think there was plenty of vigorous rooting at that one. to make up for lost time and such.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 12 February 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure my mood will improve substantially once i'm over all this breakup nonsense. frankly there's a massive upside to the whole thing that i'm yet to embrace.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Sunday, 12 February 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Thats a good way to look at it at least :) It'll get better matey.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 12 February 2006 23:08 (twenty years ago)

As for me, mood-improvement plans short term include getting back into painting and drawing, doing a total spring clean overhaul of the house (even if it means I have to pay professionals to to some of the cleaning), and buying some new things like a fridge, couch, etc.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 12 February 2006 23:10 (twenty years ago)

In fact I should make a point of a trip to Freedom next weekend why not.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 12 February 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

a clean house is an impressively big mood improver, i can tell you. pay those professionals.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 February 2006 05:22 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's my old cat that lives with my parents now since I didn't take her with me when I moved interstate. She's been gone four days.

After one of the cats where I live now, I don't need this. I don't even have any photos of her to remember her by, and it's gonna feel shit going up to visit the rents in April and not see my Matilda :(

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 13 February 2006 05:35 (twenty years ago)

When my cat's brothercat went missing my flatmate (who owned him) was in hysterics. We found Eddie 3 days later with a broken leg, being looked after by the neighbours. He'd fallen out the kitchen window - 3 stories down. Amazing he didnt really hurt himself worse.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 February 2006 05:35 (twenty years ago)

The only time she's ever been missing more than a day was when she got a tick. My folks live up in tick country, there's a creek with bandicoots living there (natural host of ticks) a few hundred metres away. And she's such a house cat, too.

Apparently the new neighbours are weird too and don't like cats as they keep guinea pigs. (Two facts not related, mind).

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 13 February 2006 05:41 (twenty years ago)

I remember when a cat of mine went missing when I was 12. Thought the poor kitty cat had gone forever...until a month or so later when the fucking thing turned up by the door like nothing had happened! So there's always hope.

Dsico as serious ahteest = k-snore

Moley's stuff really good! esp. one second-last or so in set with these kind of hard rounded pingy noises. BWOOP! early on I was thinking "hey this could be mixed into erm-is-it-Assassin by the Orb?" and then the very next one I thought "hey this could be mixed into Toxygene by the Orb!" These associations may cause our Mole grief, but I like it when the Orb do big bouncy pop basslines, and I liked these. In a dark room with lots of upright people I would have danced, but in the RSL opulence I remained sofa-bound and allowed my head and shoulders to non-ostentatiously mark enjoyment, in the time-honoured manner of my people (ie whitey).

People from Melbourne with video projections OK but unspectacular. First solo blokey fine. Two-person group who occasionally employed microphone also good but a) need to learn technique of flowing from one song into another and b) rapping bloke had quite good flow but zero strength of delivery, I recommend using filters on his voice live and not bringing him any higher in the mix.

    Caesar salad = underwhelming.

I'm not in the least offended by those Orb associations! Many a happy day was spent on the balcony listening to Ultraworld and smoking recreational cigarettes back in 1992. I'm sure it affected me. But the biggest thing for me would have to be those funny Lee Perry tracks, especially the ones with the cows in them.

Huzzah then Rattus! The tracks themselves did sound thoroughly dubby, not Orby, it was particularly a lightness of approach with the basslines on those two that reminded me. (Also probably because I downloaded two live bootlegs last weekend and listened to them during the week...)

After playing lots on the weekend without earplugs, I can't hear shit now either and have lots of high pitched buzzing. I need to invest in some of those pricey earplugs that cut out the volume, not the sound. And now my fingers are so blistered I can't write properly or use a fork!

Also, does anyone know much about solid-state sound recorders? It seems the better alternative to DAT and MiniDiscs, but still pricey at the mo'. I've been looking at these:

    http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack-main.html
    http://www.rolandcorp.com.au/default.aspx?prd=635

Listening now - it was easy to download after all. Of course, I love it. It's not loud enuff though - power electronics is all about live volume and on-stage madness don't you think? Do you go crazy on stage, and does your audience go nutty too? You should make horrible drinks on stage and force people to drink them, stand on your head, lick the floor, etc.

ratty, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I should explain that I can't turn it up to the appropriate volume without distrubing my long-suffering workmates.

ratty, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 23:12 (twenty years ago)

It isn't loud enough, or bassy enough :( It was recorded on a crappy Walkman and is missing guitar. However, we get our spanking new Yamaha mixer in a week and then we can use a dedicated four-track.

You should make horrible drinks on stage and force people to drink them

    This is a good idea.

We're trying to implement some kind of walkie-talkie device so we can go outside and yell at people on the street for vocals.

I'm picturing something doomy and psychedelic, like Electric Wizard?

trayce, re the tinnitus, my experience is that if you ensure you're always listening to music in your environment (not at a loud level, at a quiet level), and when you go to sleep (or put the fan on), you quickly stop listening to the ringing. After about 2-3 months you can't really hear it unless you deliberately listen for it. It may be even that it's still there (hard to tell), but dat any rate it doesn't bother you any more.

ratty, Thursday, 23 February 2006 03:04 (twenty years ago)

Nah esskay, I want to FAP wit y'all! I am just so monumentally fed up with being sick on and off so much of the time I want to smash things. How do people cope I ask you.

Moley: with my normal level ear ringing yeah that does help: I never notice its there. This current lot is worse, and maybe is is actually an ear infection I dunno but noise makes it *worse*, esp low bassy noise. It makes my whole skull vibrate and go WRRRRRRR. I've never had anything like it. Its making me feel like hurling.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 23 February 2006 03:09 (twenty years ago)

You can listen at http://www.myspace.com/batrider , but it's not as good as their live shows.

haven't heard of them - do you know them? i'll have to keep an eye out.

what does that actually mean anyway?

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:37 (twenty years ago)

ides of March = the 15th of March, or the time leading up to it.

I have no cable either, guess I miss out on GA's Australian Afternoon. I don't really know what any of them look like though. Or their names. (I'm assuming they don't look as plastic and fakey as on the album covers but I suppose I could be completely wrong there. but knowing anything about the identities and personalities of the singers seems utterly beside the point for appreciating the records, so "hmm, plastic" is the sum total of my thinking upon viewing the sleeves.) still GIRLS ALOUD IN AUSTRALIA!!!!!?!? how has this not been blowing up ILM for weeks? I now remember something on CFBgoesPop in like December saying they were going to do promo but then nothing until today.

have fun though Edward! (retroactively when you read this)

okay so there's a story on Girls Aloud in the MX, and apart from moronically falling into the trap of imagining that anything interesting about them has anything to do with THEM ("Harding has found sibling fealty through the group, something which had always eluded her in life," not to even think of mentioning "We're nothing like the Spice Girls, we're edgy!") I can now confirm that Nicola is indeed totally cute and Edward's enthusiasm is well-placed. (though now I'm home and looked in the What Will The Neighbours Say? booklet and if the red hair is real she was a FOOL to cover it up!)

every other act is staggered so there's about fifteen minutes non-overlap, but Avalanches run 8:45-10 and HS run 8:45-9:45. Buh!

in other going-out news we got to the dancehall/soca night abt 70 minutes after doors, and there were three bouncers outside, two people on the door and THREE punters inside. and the DJ was playing lover's rock. so went instead to a drum'n'bass night where James De La Cruz (EX-Avalanches) came on and did a two-hour non-DNB set in the middle. In a pub across the road from work! Decks were set up on the pool table. And a bloke came out and played sax over one of the DJs.
