Listened to the first side of the Zerfas LP (recently reissued on Radioactive) last night. Very good! Really looking forward to the Michaelangelo reissue on Void, which should be out in May. The Michaelangelo outtakes record that Void put out (A Sorcerer's Dream) is great.

1. msp and stelfox hit the nail on the head.
2. Stuponaut your critique is worthless what with you taking the term out of context and applying your revisionist standards which ignores the intent of what Bangs, successfully or unsuccessfully, was trying to communicate.
3. Carlin, how Bangs lived his life has nothing to do with the quality of his work or intelligence -- you show little understanding of addiction.
4. Perpetua, you could certainly use a little Bangs spark in your work, speaking of someone who writes like they are seeking a career as a label publicist or music magazine shill.

Oh, and I know of a really good way for the military to save bigtime on funds -- just get out of Iraq (I can't believe I'm saying this), then bomb the hell out of that place. Bomb it off the map. Because, according to what I hear day in and day out about soldier after soldier being killed "by insurgents", apparently these people don't want any help. So bye bye, sayonara, farewell. BLAM BLAM BLAM, in blasts that would make what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki look like child's play. No more Iraq.

what is that re:, stormy?

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 19 May 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

oh, nothing in particular, Ian. It's just that MC probably hits at the heart of any community -- certainly any on-line community -- wherein there's really not that ability to build up actual RL connection and so forth. I didn't even read the original thread this came from! but I dig Marcello, and he was just probably calling out the same general nonsense one sees on ILX all the time. Because, see, I like Marcello because he has good taste. He is a smart, ambitious guy and a good writer. And I sort of get where he's coming from. But he fires from the hip, to be sure. Fair enough. I still like the guy. He knows music real well. I'd take a million passionate Marcello Carlin over one lifeless boring Ragget -- an office worker who spams the board all day long with inanites. It's a pretty simple equation in my mind. Bring on the Marcello Carlin types, and the Ian Johnson types!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 19 May 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

In other words, I like commentators on ILX who've exhibited some individual taste, let's put it that way. Fuck a hive-mind idiot, in other words, basic stuff.

So, about a year back, I picked up the 40 GB iPod (which, as I look on the Apple website, it appears they don't make anymore). In any case, it purports to hold 10,000 songs. I looked at mine today and wha-hey! Whaddya know?: I have 10,142 on it.

Should I be concerned? Will it splutter, wheeze and expire on me from the sheer weight of all that music? Or maybe did I win the Wonka Golden Ticket iPod that can hold an indeterminate amount of songs (rounded off to infinity).

Anyone else ever spot this?

There's one guy there who bugs the snots out of me. He kinda looks like a supervillian. Thin mustache, sort've long greasy black hair. Sort've a perpetually flushed complexion. He was working behind the counter at the Kim's that was once located on the west end of Bleeker Street (two blocks away from Christoper). I was in there one day, and they were playing something that piqued my curiosity. "Who is this?" I asked. Captain Flush-face looks up, sneers, and says "this is Curved Air." "Oh yeah?" I exclaim, "So this is what they sound like. I know Stewart Copeland was briefly a member." Flushed-face looks up. "No, he wasn't." "Uh...., I'm pretty certain he was." "No, he wasn't. You're mistaken." "Wanna bet?" I ask...pushing my luck. "I'm not interested in discussing this further. Are you going to buy something?" "Not anymore I'm not."

Went home. Checked. Stew Copeland WAS in Curved Air. THAT FUCKER WAS WRONG!

PS: Curved Air fucking SUCK!

Is that thing worth the money? It's about $45 at a local Tower Records over hear. I was THIS close to buying it 30 minutes ago. My mom talked me out of it. She told me to find out if it was worth it and if we could find it at a cheaper price somewhere else. Then she convinced me to buy a Nirvana DVD because it was on sale for $12. Then I began to sneeze! Three times in front of the cash register, just as the woman rang it up. My mom said I must be alergic to Nirvana and I told her it was because she talked me out of Killing Joke.

So you're standing in a club. You're loose, you're feelin ok. The DJ is doing a good job. Then, gradually, as you sip your gin and tonic, you realize that the DJ is doing a GREAT job. The DJ is building something HUGE. And you feel it, you know it, the dance is about to become REAL REAL big. And you look out on the dancefloor and you see... oh, jesus. It's so sad. One girl is walking up and down like it's a catwalk. That's her move. One dude fancies himself Spanish, and is trying to affect a Fandango in his pointy shoes to this HUGE HUGE beat. Everyone else is trying to pretend like they're not embarassed as all hell to be on a dancefloor. It's the most inadequate dancing ever, en masse, to a beat that really moves you.
And then -- AND THEN -- you look down at your feet and realize you're not dancing at all. And who the fuck are you to judge all these people who are at least trying, no matter how much they are hurting the basic idea of dancing? WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?

C/D?

In Canada, PSB's were (and are) liked by the DM/NO/Smiths/Cure crowd, but they were certainly considered to be in the second division, far behind those bands. I never knew anybody IRL who was a hardcore PSB fan, which is why I'm somewhat baffled that so many people on that thread are honestly proclaiming them to be the greatest thing ever.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

there are people on ilm not from the northamerican continent.

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

The alternative (formerly new wave) station here in San Diego were generally Anglophilic and played tons of Cure, Smiths, Depeche Mode, etc. constantly (still do). I don't think they ever played much Pet Shop Boys, though, and now I'm wondering why. Maybe they were perceived as being more mainstream?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

alternative/indie stations never played them in the uk either, fwiw

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

stormy, have you ever considered that your endless championing of real music for real americans, the old guys at the jazz club down the street listening to bud powell or the dudes watching detroit lions games on tv rocking out to tom petty, is just as much a pose as this supposed hivemind you rail against?

i mean, "nobody in america would be caught dead..."? are you joking? you make it sound like a) everyone in america is listening to your beloved jazz and classic rock EXCEPT for ilxors, and b) if the ilxors aren't, it's because they're "dorks" who have too much time on their hands and a need for acceptance.

it's impossible for you to understand that someone might genuinely like a band like the pet shop boys (who i'm not even sticking up for, i don't even know them that well) on their own terms. i mean, go to one gay club already.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

fwiw, erasure (whom i often associate with pet shop boys) was pretty popular in my high-school theatre circles. :)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Maybe they were perceived as being more mainstream?

That's very likely the case -- "West End Girls" shot into the pop charts and therefore bypassed some of the chart-phobic "alternative" stations. Smiths/DM/Cure/etc. never had a North American hit that big (or even anything close to it) until the Cure's "Lovesong".

Our Toronto alt-station was fairly PSB-friendly. They often played "West End Girls" (which was too big to be ignored, I suppose), and once in a while you'd hear "Oppurtunities" or "It's a Sin", but little else until the "Behaviour" singles, which all became radio staples for whatever reason.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

I think there's a definite perception that "hivemind" ILMers embrace so-called shallow pop music whilst dismissing anything that could be considered more difficult or that some might call "real". Which isn't across-the-board true, but then again look at how some of the VV'ers seem to concern themselves mostly with intellectualizing crap and can't even be bothered to remember the names of/sound of/listen to certain music (Kogan pretty much said he doesn't bother with any indie music, which by his definition probably extends beyond the usual corny indietude!)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

what are you even reacting toward? the fact that i said andrew was hot? he is! anyway, there's not really any "might" about it. i self-identified as bisexual for six years or so, and the only reason i don't say i am anymore is because a) i'm much less interested in dudes than when i was in high school and college, and b) i didn't feel like a label like "bisexual" adequately described the fluidity of my sexuality. but you'll never catch me saying i'm straight, either, since that's just as limiting -- if you do, feel free to call me out on it. i also don't know why this bothers you so much, joel.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

(unless you're reacting to the fact that i said "go to one gay club"?! i mean, if that's the case, then "i might be bisexual" is a pretty weird extrapolation there. all i tried to imply was that stormy has a pretty narrow view of "americans" and, for example, that gay people exist. there's no personal statement even implied there. i mean, i mention homosexuality in passing = i'm a latent homosexual?)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

(also, the "you're secretly gay" line doesn't hold much weight with me because i've actually thought about it quite a bit, and have had homosexual encounters, and don't really see it as something to be ashamed of, and so if it were true, why wouldn't i just admit it?)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

haha when i was in middle school pet shop boys were pretty huge down here (in rural georgia), i remember the first time i asked out kr1sty blu3tt we were talking on the phone and watching the 'west end girls' video on our respective tvs so in a way the pet shop boys were responsible with my first contact with a vagina that didn't involve my head poking out of my mom. 'it's a sin' coming out was kinda a huge deal too, we were clueless about any homosexuality though we'd heard the name 'pet shop boys' meant something, i remember by eighth grade though my gaydar had developed or something cuz i remember going to a bookstore in downtown athens and some dude was listening to pet shop boys and thinking 'cool - a real gayfer'. i didn't hear any pet shop boys at the gay bar last week - just some ciara and new order and ALOT of deborah cox, the gays must love her, i hear her EVERYTIME i'm in there (maybe she's the new pet shop boys?) - but i did score with a teenaged chick i picked up there so big ups to pet shop boys and queers in general, providing me with a back door *rimshot* to young pussy for nearly twenty years and counting.
