What is the verdict on Out Hud?

I couldn't find a thread on them, so...

I don't remember why but I was inspired to download S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D. and Let Us Never Speak of It Again today and I'm really enjoying both. The former album sounds to me like a syncretic blend of Disco Inferno and ESG instrumentals and the latest one throws New Order into the mix while reducing the DI yet it's all kaleidoscopically wonderful. I'm enjoying the new one a bit more than the first album but I'm relishing both.

It's a shame that their song titles read like Xiu Xiu lyrics, though.

God, I searched how many times and couldn't find any of those? Yeesh. Lock thread.

(Advice: search under Thread Title instead of Keyword.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

That didn't help because it won't read words under four characters. I typed song titles, too, but nothing came up.

No, the point is that Thread Title does work for words under four characters -- Keyword doesn't.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I'm just trying to be helpful! :)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I love the new Out Hud album!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Ahh, okay. Good to know (on both counts)!

Xiu Xiu lyrics = self-loathing, uncomfortably confessional, bordering-on-goth-if-they-weren't-so-startling-and-unreliant-on-the-usual-reference-points, cheerfully sadistic with a point, etc.

Out Hud titles = snarky, ironic, silly, tongue-in-cheek

not sure i see the connection

william s fields, Monday, 18 April 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

You're right about that, William, but both have the capability to make one cringe easily, and that's what I meant.

Went to see OutHud in Chicago last Saturday. They were great, but the set was short, the venue sucked (Empty Bottle) and they didn't play anything offa STREETDAD.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I've heard nothing but good things about the empty bottle! Surprising.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

I just heard the Street Dad EP the night before last and LOVED it! Way more than most instrumental music I hear (which usually doesn't get more of a reaction than "pleasant"). I'm really excited to hear the album.

jon, joel has used that joke like four times already.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

this album is great, especially wonderful for a romp in the sack with a lady.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Great live show.

cdwill, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

Empty Bottle is a small venue that I've been to twice, both times packed. Went to see the Lonesome Organist and I could hardly see him (which is a big deal live), and I'm 6'1". Last Saturday, it was packed again, and we (wife and I) attempted to dance, but you don't see too many sardines in a can dancing.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

Cutty, I never read any of the threads until now! Just saw them and thought about making the joke!

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

it's the venue's fault people show up to it.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

I like the Empty Bottle. Obviously, it's better when it's less crowded, but isn't that the case everywhere?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

Of course, since I stupidly failed to secure tickets for the show, I'm pleased to hear it was disappointing.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

My criticism is more about that they should have played at a larger venue. (They turned people away at the door) That Shubas place maybe.

nine years pass...

I wish so, so badly that there was enough demand for this band to get back together

aaliyah papi (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 04:45 (eleven years ago)

Very few bands I can think of that batted a 1.000 average.
