Doom could have been an awesome genre if it weren't for the fact that most of the bands suck. So much empty pretension...

But do check out Katatonia. Brave Murder Day is an original and brilliant piece of doom metal, imitated but never equalled.

The rest of the line-up consisted of Helevorn, Saturnus, Novembers Doom and Ataraxie, who go for the English early 90's doom/death sound and were the other best band of the night.

twelve years pass...

some of it's a wee bit corny but I dig Sorcerer's "In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross". their vocalist is more Robby Steinhardt from Kansas than Dio, there's a lot of NWOBHM in there.

some people told me it was Candlemass-ish before I picked it up but....I don't see it. Candlemass is darker and dirgier, Sorcerer aren't afraid to introduce lighter elements, sometimes bordering on power metally.

but very hooky, and almost all about Satan.
