amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 24 October 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, tonight I'm quite happy. I've just had another sort of date with that girl who I had the sort of date with before, which got mentioned on that other thread, and it was really nice and she's very lovely and fun, and while it's still sort of vague and slightly confusing, well, I like her enough that even if things don't come to anything more, I think I'll still be glad to just have her as a new friend anyway. So that's a good thing, right? I think it is. So I'm not sad.

Also, pictures of totoro are the opposite of sad. Even in the rain.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 26 September 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

that thread became a bit "things that make me ia" when actually "things i don't get" is kinda more discursive.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 26 September 2013 15:14 (twelve years ago)

I think we're a community of analytical people, but we get so caught up in it that when more than two or three people do something we instantly want to categorize them and their intentions in a "stuff white people like" style. It can be unhealthy to be so hypersensitive.

Evan, Thursday, 26 September 2013 15:20 (twelve years ago)

think the problem is not so much being analytical, which is a good thing, but not redirecting the same analyticality inwards. like i think it's not that hard to imagine what local garda's "small range of approved behaviours would be left" are (for starters, we know making crabby posts on the internet all day is one), we just don't like thinking of ourselves as a type, like that's where the "distance" comes in

Yes, sometimes I find it to be an attempt to validate the delusion that you're above such passive behavior in this way or that. I understand the compulsion to get frustrated with people that don't seemingly value their own individualism as much as I feel like I do. Explaining why gets out of hand and you end up looking like cynical ass.

three weeks pass...

Do you think that posting to ilx makes you more happy or less happy than you would otherwise be, on balance?

low tolerance for average white (bends), Monday, 21 October 2013 23:22 (twelve years ago)

I smell a poll

c21m50nh3x460n, Monday, 21 October 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

in the long run i think it's a net positive, especially if u do things like steal jokes/opinions to charm people with irl. but in the short-run there are definitely some lows

hobby v. compulsion

Mordy , Monday, 21 October 2013 23:27 (twelve years ago)

I tried rationing myself to one post per day, period. That made me feel much better, but now it's more like one post per board per day, usually ILM and ILB. But it can be more, if the conversation gets good, or if I can several pieces of exciting news to lay on yall (ehh, usually re Rolling Reissues). Anyway, works for me.

ilx filled an important hole for me after a difficult breakup but i think it also created some holes of its own.

(emphasis Treeship's) (Treeship), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 00:17 (twelve years ago)

how so?

markers, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 00:18 (twelve years ago)

mostly because it makes the internet a much more potent distractor for me than it was before and i've always spent much more time on the internet than i wanted to. but also i think there was a point in time in the summer when i was allowing myself to get actually offended by things people said on here and i didn't have enough perspective to fully realize that this is just a virtual space, that people here don't know me, etc. and this sort of freaked me out when i realized it, if that makes sense.

(emphasis Treeship's) (Treeship), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 00:23 (twelve years ago)

the internet in general has a lot of benefits and drawbacks and it's hard for me to say whether it is good or bad. it fills a short-term need for interaction, information, etc. but in the longterm it can make you even more isolated. i guess the important thing is to be self-aware about your internet use.

(emphasis Treeship's) (Treeship), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 00:25 (twelve years ago)

More happy.

I don't think any people IRL who would be charmed by jokes/opinions from ilx, to be honest.

Big Train sadly (guiltily?) OTM

what's the difference between jokes/opinions from ilx and any other type of joke or opinion? i mean it's not like i'm going around at house parties quoting luriqua posts verbatim

flopson, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:07 (twelve years ago)

ilx is not really good enough anymore to justify really spending a lot of time on, like the amount that could bum you out, which makes it easier. get saturated very quickly, which used to not be the case

I was on Yelp Talk the other day. It read a lot like being on IL Xor, with minor differences.

i think what i value most about ILX is fun, stimulating conversation about music i really like and care about -- conversations that really help me better understand why a particular musician or piece of music resonates with me. i don't talk about music with too many people IRL, so I value that here. i also appreciate the ILPM parenting threads. it veers into a compulsion or gets unhealthy when i'm spending time here looking at threads whose topics i don't really care about or that are mostly negatively focused.

marcos, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i post a lot to the more phatic, chatty threads but the ones that make me happy are about books, movies, or albums i care about.

Um, this post was mean to be made when logged in as bends, I wasn't just guessing what someone else was talking about.
