that thread became a bit "things that make me ia" when actually "things i don't get" is kinda more discursive.

I think we're a community of analytical people, but we get so caught up in it that when more than two or three people do something we instantly want to categorize them and their intentions in a "stuff white people like" style. It can be unhealthy to be so hypersensitive.

ia has the saving grace of the "irrationally" part. work bitching has the fact that hey, it's work, built into it. lifestyles in theory should be about the hows and whys of "not getting it" but seems especially unpleasant to me. all these complaints all ready to go with an almost complete lack of curiousity or self-doubt.

there was a thread last night i was reading, something like "check out this punk goth dating site LOL" & it was just exactly this exact vibe of horseshit forced incredulity. i like gawker but i feel like the relay between some of those articles & ilx has gotten a bit too tight esp with those little newsclippings about totally insignificant micro-instances of people being assholes, kind of takes things out of perspective

Yes, sometimes I find it to be an attempt to validate the delusion that you're above such passive behavior in this way or that. no, there's def. much to be said for 'trying', having this sort of meta-discussion is, uh, not really 'trying' imo

there are threads on ilx where people express their better nature. fucked up as the worser nature threads are maybe that's mainly an effect of many people's worser natures partying down all at once.

some people are just really into complaining. it's how they bond. this is what i've gathered.

in the long run i think it's a net positive, especially if u do things like steal jokes/opinions to charm people with irl. but in the short-run there are definitely some lows

I tried rationing myself to one post per day, period. That made me feel much better, but now it's more like one post per board per day, usually ILM and ILB. But it can be more, if the conversation gets good, or if I can several pieces of exciting news to lay on yall (ehh, usually re Rolling Reissues). Anyway, works for me.

ilx filled an important hole for me after a difficult breakup but i think it also created some holes of its own.

how so?

mostly because it makes the internet a much more potent distractor for me than it was before and i've always spent much more time on the internet than i wanted to. but also i think there was a point in time in the summer when i was allowing myself to get actually offended by things people said on here and i didn't have enough perspective to fully realize that this is just a virtual space, that people here don't know me, etc. and this sort of freaked me out when i realized it, if that makes sense.

the internet in general has a lot of benefits and drawbacks and it's hard for me to say whether it is good or bad. it fills a short-term need for interaction, information, etc. but in the longterm it can make you even more isolated. i guess the important thing is to be self-aware about your internet use.

ilx is not really good enough anymore to justify really spending a lot of time on, like the amount that could bum you out, which makes it easier. get saturated very quickly, which used to not be the case

i think what i value most about ILX is fun, stimulating conversation about music i really like and care about -- conversations that really help me better understand why a particular musician or piece of music resonates with me. i don't talk about music with too many people IRL, so I value that here. i also appreciate the ILPM parenting threads. it veers into a compulsion or gets unhealthy when i'm spending time here looking at threads whose topics i don't really care about or that are mostly negatively focused.

yeah, i post a lot to the more phatic, chatty threads but the ones that make me happy are about books, movies, or albums i care about.
