What's Good On ILM?

I read all but a few ILE threads, but I don't have the time for that on ILM too. Nor the interest in a lot of cases. But I know there must be great stuff there, threads that become fascinating, great individual posts (it bothers me a little that I am undoubtedly missing some prime Sinkah and Kogan stuff, for instance), hilarious exchanges and all that. Obviously some stuff might show up in the 'posts that made you laugh' thread, but I want those who spend lots of time on ILM to let us (or just me) know where I'm missing something special. A link and a reason for the recommendation would be good. (I will of course ignore ones from Calum saying "Here's a top thread where I go on about women repulsing me.")

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

when was the precise moment that Techno became dated?

Try that one, it's pretty interesting I found.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Most criminally unsung old-school & new-school hip-hop and R&B producers

Frank Kogan & Shasha Frere-Jones et al gettin' into it rather seriously

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bang! thread has its moments but it's obscured mostly by a) stupid fighting (that's not even entertaining; apart from Suzy/Kate) and b) being a talkshop/market research for Bang!. It also has people boasting about being professional proof readers (!!! boasting!!!) for some reason.

The 'techno' thread is really interesting too.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

rockist scientist's oum oom umm thread just keeps on giving!!

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i just love the title!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i second the om thread. it keeps getting revived and the discussion is v interesting. The bang! thread is v funny.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I know welfare mothers, so of course I can appreciate the *realness* of the Bang! thread!

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I read the techno thread. LOts of top Geir, such as:

"I would say you have a very limited approach."

"Btw. dancing sucks. Good music should be enjoyed sitting, actively listening to it." (A top comment to make on a thread about dance music.)

but surely all the pop music now is electronic?
"Not the truly good pop music. Coldplay aren't electronic, Travis aren't electronic. Oasis aren't electronic. Crowded House weren't electronic."

But (and this is me again) the weirdest thing about that thread is how many people on it have this really tight aesthetic, and they are butting up against one another with no hope of real communication. Geir is the most bizarre and extreme example, but Ronan has his only strict and prescriptive aesthetic. I love Ronan's writing when he is enthusing about records he loves, but this is less fun.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I ain't starting on a 4000-post thread without stronger recommendation than the Bang one is currently getting. I will read the unsung R&B producers one. (Ha, I'm acting as if this is just for my benefit, just because I asked the question.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah you're much better with the R&B thread but it's really deep in an 'I feel extremely out of my depth' here kinda way. If you're not clued in it's hard going.

The Bang! thread I think is of limited interest to a) people who haven't read Bang! a) people who aren't too fussed about in-print music writing c) people who a soul d) people who think Popular is the greatest TV program in the world that I ever just watched ('cos it is!).

(Martin, I'll root about in the archives and post a link here to one or two of my favourite old threads that need reviving. Pinefox's Smiths one for example.)

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the GNFingR OPX thread.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've rather been avoiding any OP/PO threads for a long time, to be honest.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The guava and cheese pastries are delicious.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(it bothers me a little that I am undoubtedly missing some prime Sinkah and Kogan stuff, for instance)

you can use ilm search to check on whether particular people have been posting, of course (not that i ever would ahem ahem ahem).

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 5 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I guess I could search for all Kogan and Sinkah posts - but they were just examples. Do I also search every day/week for all Tim F, Jerry the Nipper, Tom Ewing, Anna F posts? Where does this end?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah those ones are all rubbish, Martin. But I'll teach you how to spell my name, if you want.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously I already search daily for all your posts, David!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Just like I programmed you.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've been enjoying the Hongro challenge. He thinks Nik Kershaw is better than Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, probably put together if that's the kind of thing you fancy trying out.

one month passes...
Revive because there are some long threads that look as if they might be a) interesting discussions of such things as misogyny, b) full of stupid comments about sexism, c) sprinkled with the kind of misogyny that maybe a moderator should read, or maybe all three. And besides, what I said at the top of this thread is still true so I'm interested in fresh recommendations. (I've lost faith in ILM even more, and haven't even marked a couple of recent deaths, because I was sort of despairing at the lack of interest in one I started a little while ago. I am torn between wanting to note, say, George Faith's passing, and not wanting to create the indignity of an obit thread that everyone ignores.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Film Criticism vs Music Criticism is good but difficult going. (I think as a rule-of-thumb all the 'misogyny' threads are rub. Also search: where jess posts an excellent Frank Kogan article on the 'Jism: Academic Bullshit' thread, near the bottom.)

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I posted some stuff on the "pox: disco" thread that I thought was good, though perhaps a little Vice-magaziney. There are other golden contributions there. We could, however, use your input, Martin!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I get exasperated with thread titles like that. We get (to exaggerate only slightly) POX Dinosaur Jr or Foo Fighters, then POX All Black Music Ever. I'll take a look though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ilm seems especially weird lately.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

um, its the same as usual actually.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Village Voice/DC C. Paper writer on "vocal complexity" in rap & Prefuse 73 vs. Kogan, Frere-Jones take on production is pretty excellent.

That's it! The only ism I want to come out of your mouths is jism. Overacademic Bullshit Must Die. has mutated pretty fast (& there's some really good stuff near the bottom, esp. the Kogan essay which would be right up yr alley, Martin.

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you'd like to hear me prattling on on doom-e's prog-rock thread, as well. Shambling (mis)insights.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"I get exasperated with thread titles like that. We get (to exaggerate only slightly) POX Dinosaur Jr or Foo Fighters, then POX All Black Music Ever. I'll take a look though. "

i started the pox disco thread because i don't know very much about disco, and would like to know more
i'm sorry if that exasperates you,but i wasn't going to pretend that i know about something if i don't,and since i know there are lots of people on ilm who do know a lot about it i though it'd be a good place to get some recommendations...

robin (robin), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry that was vague. I guess I mean that it seems like there are a lot of threads started about the same sort of things, and mainly negative things like misogny or that kind of thing. I wish there were more threads about how people really love things. Maybe I'm not digging deep enough.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

disco is vice magaziney?

Chip Morningstar (bob), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i think its more that tracer is worried that the comments about the tracks on the disco thread are vice magaziney
i've never read vice so i can't really comment-i like the descriptions though,i'll have to get downloading

robin (robin), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

''sorry that was vague. I guess I mean that it seems like there are a lot of threads started about the same sort of things, and mainly negative things like misogny or that kind of thing. I wish there were more threads about how people really love things. Maybe I'm not digging deep enough.''

I don't 'dig enough' either bcz i don't have the time but I read the titles and I've been around long enough to know what is 'good' for me and what isn't. I'm sure you can do the same.

I see yr point abt threads being 'circular' but sometimes you can learn something new on those bcz new ppl come in all the time etc.

don't click on the calum ones tho'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, I wasn't born yesterday. ;)

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yes surely the solution to "pox: [absurdly broad subject familiar to few on ILM]" vs "pox: [ridiculously particular and focused subject familer to many on ILM]" is for those who know their way around the too-broad subject to intervene with brio and educate and complicate, not to step away sadly shaking their heads at the state of youth today!!

in other news: i am nearly finished w.my first "teach mark s a LESSON" response

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

''those who know their way around the too-broad subject to intervene with brio and educate and complicate''

b-but miccio might complain!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the "POX : disco" thread has gotten me into downloading lots of disco, pretty much (though I finally thought to search through the archives, but none of the existing threads seem any more "useful" than this one) (also as a great singles genre which is also way back before I was born etc, the POX : genre thing works in it's favour - not too much to be overwhelming, but enough to etc etc).
tracer's comments were really good (esp. since nobody else has commented).

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Robin, I didn't at all mean a dig at you. I fully accept that this can be a good way to learn some things (except it tends to be just lists of records) - I get exasperated at the bias towards particular areas of ILM (and magazines like Mojo say), and examples like those I cited are just a manifestation of that. I find it almost impossible to start thinking in such terms in areas where I love/like hundreds or even thousands of tunes, which is why I still haven't chipped in there. I'd be more keen to post one long thing about something not yet mentioned (say the Trammps sublime Penguin At The Big Apple/Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart) than a list of ten that I love best.

Thanks for the film/music crit pointer, Cozen. I've just read through the whole wonderful thread, and posted something that I think has some vague relevance (except it's mostly about comics, sadly). Lots of ILM's best and brightest on strong form. I miss Josh. Not got round to the 'jism' one yet, but I will.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah don't worry about it martin,i understood your point and so on,i just wanted to point out that threads like that were of benefit to someone-i only have limited resources and am trying to hear as much music as possible,so i thought it would be a good way to hear some disco...
i'm aware that i'm always dipping my toes into genres people could write hundreds of pages about, looking for a few songs to download or whatever, but i dont really see any other way of trying to get to know about all the hundreds of types of music i haven't even heard yet...

perhaps you should start a more specific disco thread, there are lots of people on ilm who know a lot about it(as you can see from the thread),i'm just not one of them

robin (robin), Saturday, 24 May 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I would have no problems with the big broad threads if there were occasionally more detailed threads that took off in those areas. It's things like my last obit thread for a wonderful if fairly minor soul figure getting one response that make it look as if the superficial overview is all we can get in areas outside ILM's core interests. Unfortunately my interests are mostly outside that core.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been droppin' mad science. That's all I know.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 24 May 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Overacademic Bullshit thread is mostly pretty poor, but there are some great bits, most certainly including that Kogan essay.
