Is ILX fatally diminished now that a lot of the more interesting ilxors such as Momus, John Darnie11e or Mark S. no longer post?

This could well be the case...

Pip pip!

nostalgic, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

We've been through this. It's rubbish, yes.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

It's bad that N. doesn't post no more.

the bellefox, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Diminished it may be, but the final, fatal moment lies years hence, long after you have ceased to care.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

See some section of here:

Longtime ILXors - how has this board changed over time?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's fatally diminished, though I do wish then fellows mentioned above still posted here. Did Momus ever do a "farewell u fux0rz" type post, or did he just stop? (or, for that matter, is he really just busy w/other stuff at the moment?)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm still posting.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago)

This thread implies that there have only been three interesting ILXors which is just mean.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Aja, apparantly, is back.

Huk-L, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Momus briefly posted on a couple of threads the other day, so he's not gone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Yes!! (x-post to DV 'ere) Actually quite a few of then people who were here when I found this place are still posting quite regularly.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

THEY ALWAYS DO POOS IN ME GRABS FANNY THEN I COME IN

GARU G, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Momus has posted occasionally of late, here and there. Even John D posted once recently (I was hugely flattered). I desperately wish that Mark S would post as much as he used to, as that significantly ups the average intelligence, knowledge and funniness here.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I miss Nate Patrin and Ethan.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

This Garu G thing? It isn't funny.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Momus was only interesting in that he posted asshat bullshit that caused people to argue with him for hours, and in that he was a celebrity. I think any of us could take care of the former if you think it would make ILX more interesting (I'm perfectly willing to take this position), and we've got Hurlothrumbo for the latter now.

I liked John D. a lot, actually, but the only thing that made him "special" (better than other ILXors) was his celebrity status. See above.

I don't even know who Mark S. is.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I am in a bad mood today.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago)

i like the idea of hurlothrumbo as a celebrity.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago)

he wrote about Cabaret Voltaire for SPIN! Almost tricked me into buying some in high school, the bastard.

Who's Hurlothrumbo?!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:34 (twenty years ago)

How can we make ILE better?

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:34 (twenty years ago)

STOP TALKING ABOUT ILX.

Dan OTM

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

John D was more interesting than just his celebrity status: he's intelligent, sensitive, funny, and has interesting and sometimes unexpected tastes.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I wish Nabisco would post a lot again. And that Josh would return. And that Tom would post on ILE again. And Tim H.

John D was one of the most consistently intelligent and interesting people here, and I formed that opinion before I knew he made music. (xpost)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Hurlothrumbo is from the great band Oneida (who make better music than Momus or the Mountain Goats anyways).

John D was more interesting than just his celebrity status: he's intelligent, sensitive, funny, and has interesting and sometimes unexpected tastes.

You mean like most everyone else on ILX? (This was kind of my point).

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

oo i remember the time we used to have much more meta threads - that's when it was really good. NOT REALLY OF COURSE, I'm just having a laugh

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

ILX will be so much better once I die.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

hey yall, I just stumbled acrross this site! you guys are funny but stop makin fun of those awful tabloid pictures of me!

Britney Spears (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:39 (twenty years ago)

momus and j0hn d aren't really much bigger celebrities than all you lot with yr vi11age voice pieces, you know

FINALLY A PLACE WHERE I CAN SHOW THE WORLD MY MAGIC PUNANI

Christina Aguilera (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I think I saw John D's byline in Magnet before I ever knew who the Mountain Goats were.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

yo yo anyone here wann talk about the impact of ralph ellison on choclate starfish?

fred durst (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Maybe if the Vicar left, ILX would improve, again, at last?

the finefox, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm still here!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago)

momus is in japan/hong kong and probably having far too much fun to post with us, wait till he gets bored or poor in Berlin again.

Ed (dali), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:48 (twenty years ago)

The bird would cease and be as other birds
But that he knows in singing not to sing.
The question that he frames in all but words
Is what to make of a diminished thing.

briania (briania), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago)

n/a, John D is very well versed in a wide range of topics, some of which most ILX0rs don't know all that much about, or if they do, don't seem to be too interested in discussing, and he was always very funny and polite with it, too. That's not a very common ocurrence, even on ILX, and I don't think it's insulting to the rest of us to admit it.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Martin OTM about John D. It was months before I discovered that he was a musician, and a rather good one at that.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago)

i enjoyed reading some of momus's posts, although less and less as time went on and he seemed to reduce himself to caricature. the ILM thread on the new le tigre single is a case in point: momus shows up, makes a statement that goes against what nearly everyone had been expressing, and backs it up with a nonsensical argument which he half-heartedly supports with overly artifical dichotomies, and then just gives up and makes bad puns until he disappears.

mark s i miss, but he's off writing two books, so we have those to look forward to.

john d i miss as well. i agree with daniel, he had a protean outlook, was usually polite (always polite to me), and he had a real moral sense.

in general i miss what i felt was a more permissive attitude toward taking small things about pop culture fairly seriously. this still happens of course, and any thread might turn interesting at any moment, but suddenly i feel like i must look over my proverbial shoulder when i make a long, involved post, concerned that someone will decide to hold it up as an example of my being silly or effette or just taking things too seriously or in need of "a life." (as if those who spend their time searching for posts they can make fun of are being much more productive.)

nabisco is around, but less than before, and it's his contributions i miss most by far. and felicity, but she's gone and i respect that decision. as i do with john (though i could have done without the fanfare accompanying his exit).

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Hey, we've still got Ned, Alex in NYC, Amateurist and lots of people whose posts I enjoy. (Did ILXs decline begin when I ceased being a lurker? I'm not convinced it declines anyway, really)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

i don't know about decline, but i think it's coarsened.

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, if I had a nickel for every time some ninny declared "Immanent Death of ILX Predicted BY SCIENCE, Gratuitiously Explicit Film at 11"... I'd have...oh, about 15 cents.
(xpost)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

ILX has grown callused like the penises of drugged-up speed wankers.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago)

that's not inaccurate

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 16:44 (twenty years ago)

i enjoyed reading some of momus's posts, although less and less as time went on and he seemed to reduce himself to caricature. the ILM thread on the new le tigre single is a case in point: momus shows up, makes a statement that goes against what nearly everyone had been expressing, and backs it up with a nonsensical argument which he half-heartedly supports with overly artifical dichotomies, and then just gives up and makes bad puns until he disappears.

Momus is great, just not great to argue with. Sometimes when I can't sleep I picture him skipping down the streets of Berlin, whistling songs from "The Threepenny Opera" and informing random passerbys that their logic is tainted by modernism. Then I get a huge smile like DeNiro at the end of "Once Upon A Time In America" and drift off into dreamland.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 13 September 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah, he's great to read. his writing style is very pleasing.

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago)

By "pleasing" do you mean "not very different from anyone else on ILE who bothers to post more than two lines at a time"?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago)

by pleasing I mean he has quite a clear, structured writing style with no flash, which he uses to argue interestingly and extremely politely, considering.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what he means, though.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I miss Nate Patrin and Ethan.

I was thinking about Ethan and Nate the other day. I was reading the second chapter of Lord of the Flies.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I think this endless nostalgia for the past is more detrimental to ilx than the absence of all of the great writers mentioned upthread.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago)

fwiw, I still think there are lots of ppl who post are as interesting and intelligent as the ppl mentioned who have gone, the trouble is that for the most part they are the ones who tend to post (sadly, I admit) in only one or two lines at a time.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago)

It's not even TUESDAY you fuckers

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 September 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I think this endless nostalgia for the past is more detrimental to ilx than the absence of all of the great writers mentioned upthread.

That and having essentially this same fucking thread at least every two months.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:27 (twenty years ago)

What's wrong with posting only one or two lines at a time?

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Obv ILX needs to start a recruitment drive to get more professional indie artists on the boards since the assembled office worker massive don't have time to write 6 paragraphs of undergraduate ethics rhetoric to keep you all entertained

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 September 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago)

SEE I AM CLEVER (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm still here.

Ilx would be better if Matt DC did a cover of Elton John's "I'm Still Standing".

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Who'd I like to see here?

Kodwo Eshun and Tony Marcus would totally bring the party (also one more Ghanaian would be nice for Barima). My friend Steph (who has a new job at let's call it Posh Mag) who spent time with me, Tom and Ally would also be cool.

One or two bored artists and my friend Carlos, who is probably either too busy or paranoid about work to post from N0rm4n F0$t3r land.

Nick's around, yay. Just intensely gigging right now.

Neil Tennant would be funny (I adore him in the soppiest way) but I'd make him post as Uncle Neil. Yesterday I met someone who used to care for the guy who had the coolest house in Northumberland/Durham/whatever, which NT bought and fixed up after the man became too infirm to live there.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Eeek Nicole, which ILXor is going to be relegated to doing the crotch thrust on the front of Elton's car? (PLEASE DON'T SAY CUSTOS)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I thought you would want to do it.

I am doing a cover of "Xanadu".

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:00 (twenty years ago)

My "present crotch" days are behind me, alas.

We should throw this open to a vote. NEW THREAD! "Which ILXOR should be the crotch-presenting hood ornament on the car from Elton John's video for 'I'm Still Standing'?"

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm doing a cover of "Abracadabra" by the Steve Miller Band.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

"Which ILXOR should be the crotch-presenting hood ornament on the car from Elton John's video for 'I'm Still Standing'?"

I want TOMBOT. And its my car so I get final say.

All these n00bs are spoiling ILX

Nu Skool (GerryNemo), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago)

It's a shame you had to do that Onimo, I always enjoy reading your posts, especially on football threads. Actually, you're one of the several reasons why I think the whole nu/old ilx thing that people on both sides of the debate get so het up about is a red herring.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:56 (twenty years ago)

(Matt, how is what Onimo did any different from what TOMBOT or I have been doing? Or Leon, for that matter?)

(TOMBOT has just rendered me completely irrelevant.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

In prime of years, when I was young,
I took delight in youthful toys,
Not knowing then what did belong
Unto the pleasure of those days.
At seven years old I was a child,
And subject for to be beguiled.

At twice seven, I must needs go learn
What discipline was taught at school;
When good from evil I could discern
I thought myself no more a fool.
My parents were contriving then
How I might live when I became a man.

At three times seven, I wexèd wild,
And manhood led me to be bold;
I thought myself no more a child,
My own conceit it so me told.
Then I did venture far and near
To buy delight at price full dear.

At four times seven I must take a wife,
And leave off all my wanton ways,
Thinking thereby perhaps to thrive
And save myself from sad disgrace.
So fare ye well, companions all,
For other business doth me call.

At five times seven, I would go prove
What I could gain by art or skill;
But still against the stream I strove,
I bowled stones up against the hill.
The more I laboured with might and main,
The more I strove against the stream.

At six times seven, all covetness
Began to harbour in my breast,
My mind then still contriving was
How I might gain all worldly wealth,
To purchase lands, and live on them,
To make my children mighty men.

At seven times seven, all worldly care
Began to harbour in my brain;
Then I did drink a heavy draught
Of water of experience plain.
Then none so ready was as I,
To purchase, bargain, sell, or buy.

At eight times seven, I wexèd old,
I took myself unto my rest;
My neighbours then my counsel craved
And I was held in great request.
But age did so abate my strength
That I was forced to yield at length.

At nine times seven,I must take leave
Of all my carnal vain, delight,
And then full sore it did me grieve,
I fetched up many a bitter sigh.
To rise up early, and sit up late
I was no longer fit; my strength did abate.

At ten times seven, my glass was run,
And I, poor silly man, must die,
I looked up, and saw the sun
Was overcome with crystal sky.
And now I must this world forsake,
Another man my place must take.

Now you may see within the glass
The whole estate of mortal man;
How they from seven to seven do pass,
Until they are three score and ten,
And, when their glass is fully run,
They must leave off where they first begun.

John D has last plane to jakarta -- he started a forum which is kind of modelled on ilx; Mark s has a blog and posts on freaky trigger, and I didn't think Momus had gone away (he sort comes and goes doesn't he?).

Basically most of the people mentioned have their words in print/blog so you can keep up with them -- and I mostly do.

Do miss andrew L, felicity and paul in santa cruz tho'. But I don't post or read it as much as a couple of years ago.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 13 September 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah to Duane and Felicity. Don't think I've seen Mary around recently either, but we might be on different threads. I didn't think of Andrew L - he's one of my best friends and I'm in touch with him constantly, but it would be great to have him back here as well.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 13 September 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I've 'left', but I'm certainly here less these days. It's mainly because I'm having such a wonderful time in the far east this summer, and spending any spare time blogging, which doesn't just involve writing but also making little radio shows and photos and videos. I've also been on deadline for lots of journalism.

There have been times in the past when I was bored or unhappy in Japan, and came here to talk to anglophones because all my friends were Japanese and the level of discourse wasn't high enough. But this time hasn't been like that. I do lurk, but when I see New Answers lists bristling with 'sheepfuXors' and 'bootyflakes' I kind of think 'Why bother?' It looks like some weird jargon, not the Orwellian plain analytical English I enjoy.

Blogging feels more positive to me at the moment. I miss some of the sparring I used to do here, though, and I do think the intellectual level here is pretty high, when it needs to be. Still is. Nice to see a thread on Rudolf Steiner. And hey, isn't that JD person John Darnielle?

Momus (Momus), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh, no, it's not.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:03 (twenty years ago)

I love the development of odd language terms in ILE. It's given me a fresh taste of how languages grow and spawn. The last time I had such an experience was working in a kitchen with people of many continents and no common tongue. Many language games proliferated and in no time we appeared to have developed our own pidgin English/Spanish hybrid. It was stunning, amazing. I will never forget that. ILX has the same hothouse language tendencies, in written form of course.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

A little nonsense now and then
Is relished by the wisest men

(Roald Dahl)

It should be no surprise that ILX careens from extremely sharp intellectual sparring (by forum standards, let's not go overboard, because we should not flatter ourselves too much here - I've seen much, much sharper debate outside the forum format, and don't come here for deep insights into the nature of music - do you? Of course not - you read books and articles, where people have the time and space to develop their ideas without intrusion) to extreme foolishness.

Creative intellectuals tend towards word games. Therefore, I like the joking Momus just as much as the serious one.

It of course fills one with confidence, as always, when a thread like this comes up and the same older crew are mentioned as being missed, time and again, as if (as others have pointed out) no-one else here has anything of value to contribute.

I have meant for some time to start a thread about the value of short sharp wit or chat vs long thoughtful posts. Both have merit, and as Tom pointed out, a lot of us just don't have the time to sit about chewing on a pen and coming up with a 200 word essay on crunk (nor would I bloody want to).

I often make a point of trying to post something thoughtful and longer and it is either ignored or the thread dies. I am also consistently in the top 10 posters yet no one ever mentions me in any context (except to have a ha-ha at my ex-gothness, which I brough upon myself, I'll happily admit).

Is it a wonder I bother anymore?

I think there's much more of a moral sense here than you might think (though I agree that John's one of the clearest and most forthright on the point). For instance, I think it's clear that TOMBOT has a very strong sense of right and wrong, and expresses it very well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 03:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh nearly everyone here has a good moral sense, so it's unfair to single anyone out, esp when you're all buddy-buddy with them anyway. If anything, people here are reflexively hyper-moral and holier-than-thou.

Maybe if in every other post I expressed my utter outrage at all the dumbfucks who inhabit the planet with me, I too would be noted for my outstanding moral character.

I think there's something in that insight. Sometimes 'morality is vanity': someone's moral stance is more closely tied with his ego than people allow. We pose and we preen, and what comes out is a moral position. I've been reading the history of the Opium Wars and it's amazing how the British presented as matters of moral principle and 'the dignity of the crown' the most mercenary and cynical gambits: land grabs, the protection of an illegal trade in narcotics. They were running opium up and down the Pearl River, but back home it played out in the press as a question of the dignity of Englishmen being mistreated by Chinese. A clear case for war! A moral outrage to be mentioned in Queen Victoria's address to parliament!

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 04:56 (twenty years ago)

Must one express outrage to show a strong set of morals?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 05:01 (twenty years ago)

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 05:07 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, no, it was Lao Tzu I was thinking of:

When the great Tao is forgotten,
Kindness and morality arise.
When wisdom and intelligence are born,
The great pretence begins.

When there is no peace within the family,
Filial piety and devotion arise.
When the country is confused and in chaos,
Loyal ministers appear.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 06:34 (twenty years ago)

I think the 'it's all men' complaint is an interesting one. I mean, I mentioned Felicity and Mary, but there is something there. The gender balance is more even here than many online places, but when it comes to the big serious debates, they seem to be disproportionately dominated by male posters (I'm not failing to notice the women involved in these, but there is less contribution from women there). It can't be the in-person dynamic where women get shouted down, as in print that can't be done, at least not in the same way. And despite this meaning that the men show off their intellectual qualities more than the women, I'm certain this doesn't mean that the women are less clever. When I think about the women here who I know are very, very smart, not so many of them seem to post in a style to demonstrate that overtly as much as many men. Is this a fundamental social difference? Are women conditioned more to debate less forcefully, to keep their opinions to themselves, to be sweet or loveable rather than brilliant? Are women less concerned with winning an argument? Is there a different debating style that my maleness and conditioning means I miss the point of? I think there has to be some sort of explanation for this. Or maybe I'm alone in thinking this?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:58 (twenty years ago)

No you're not, I think about it as well but it's difficult to rationalise. I'm so used to male dominated environments online and offline tho.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:05 (twenty years ago)

Maybe the men feel the need to show off their intellectual prowess whereas the women don't feel that they need to prove themselves.

I think women are more attunbed to the dangers of expressing themselves forcefully than men and less likely to fall into the trap of thinking that their subjective opinions are objective truth.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:10 (twenty years ago)

The cleverness of many of the women who post here is manifest in their posts. I don't think anything is being hidden. That they are happy to be intelligent without being ostentatiously intellectual seems to me a point entirely in their favour. (x post).

Token woman thing does resonate a bit. The flipside of this is the whole queen bee thing, where women actively seek to be on top of their little posse of submissive drones, and woe betide any other woman that wishes to play alongside. See also: Thatcher, M and Love, C (feminism being her Tourette's rather than a way of life; deep down I think the same psych switches are getting pushed as when a standard sweary Tourette's person says fuckshitpoo).

Thank you for that clarification (and you deserve congrats and/or some kind of health screening). I've known her for about five years through work and being neighbours; she's totally ace.

She\'s a fascinating and delightful person. (She\'s utterly merciless about portraying friends in her \"fiction\" though. Be warned!)

OI!

Frenchy, I agree totally and am also a writer so know the drill - fiction is like that. I think I'm safe next book as it is to do with faded poshos and the occult. I have just been telling her things like 'of course an endangered species like the poorer aristo is going to be schizoid and resort to the paranormal as a means of control, as wanting that sort of control over others/the elements/whatever is a schizoid impulse', tying it into anorexic rich girls who do same and the film Clueless: 'it's just my little way of taking control in an age of chaos'

I must say I'm impressed with the poetic turn this thread has taken -- at the very least, I've counted Frost, the Stranglers, Lao Tzu and what I take to be a Childe ballad. Probably a Haikunym post in there somewhere, too. Diminished? Hardly!

I take it all back -- ILX sucks now.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand the last half of this thread. I'm not bothered if posters are male or female.

There are still plenty of posters who I greatly admire, and some I don't and many more who I don't really interact with despite having been around here since year dot. I've never had the time to get involved in 700-post sinker/momus/nabisco discourses, so I don't yearn for the days when they were common, but I guess it was nice to dip in and out of them. There seem to be lots of interesting new people too. Mind you, ILX would be fatally diminished if the Pinefox went away.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Dr C speaks the truth there.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago)

I third this sentiment. (On the admittedly rare -- and that's my fault entirely -- occasions when the Pinefox praises my humor, I actually feel very pleased.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a little funny how trife & I have become some sort of Bird/Magic inseparable ILX dichotomy or something.

Anyways. I initially stopped posting here 'cause I was mad at ILx. Then I continued to not post because I figured there wasn't anything worth contributing (exception: coming up with "conkies" on the Racial Slurs for Robots thread). I saw some ILM thread where everyone was trashing Beck in favor of some band I'd never heard of and was all "Meh. I'm'a go play MVP Baseball 2004." Didn't seem worth defending anyone's honor.

Why not start a thread about slash then instead of coming on another thread and saying how bored you are with it I mean if it bores you then DON'T FUCKING READ IT!!!!

Jimmy Gator, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Because any or all thread mutations would be more interesting than the usual tripe being dug up on this done to death thread. When was the first "ILX: not as good as it used to be?" thread started? About three months after ILE started? Or was it more like three minutes?

ILX was better when it was just random drunk talk about asses. That's my opinion. If you don't like it, don't read my posts. End of story.

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:35 (twenty years ago)

As opposed to the done to death tripe that you usually bring up on ILx.

You want random drunk talk about asses, go start a message board of your own and call it "Random Drunk Talk About Asses."

pinefox if you are referring to my reference to you upthread it was provoked by your approach on numerous threads, which I am perfectly entitled to remark upon with disapproval, as you are to my approach of course. you've been criticised for it before by others and i recall us discussing it before in the pub and your attitude seemed to be one of nonchalance, which is fine, perhaps even at times admirable, though also, at times, annoying. that said, depending on what mood i am in, i would say i am almost 'flattered' when you acknowledge my posts, which is an additional consequence of your approach, albeit one that you needn't pay any mind to i would fancy. that ledley king to eh?

Stevem, your judgement is nonsense and your unwonted, seemingly unending spite astonishes. I suppose I must have thought better of you than this.

It makes me wonder what the point of it all has been.

the chimefox, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

You people.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago)

this is what ILX is like -- everyone getting out of hand -- and nicole REELIN' 'EM IN.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I re-discovered I Love Comics, it's great! Though, I'm in a terrible mood of comic based nostalgia and my room is all dusty from getting out loads of old X-Men comics. I feel old.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I remember a nice old X-Men comic where they were at a fairground. Or even a carnival. Do you know that one, Jel? It is the only one I can recall reading.

the bellefox, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I vaguely recall a fairground based story, or it could have been Daredevil at Coney Island.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I find the basic premise of the thread worrying - the idea that there is a kind of cabal of talented witty ilxors who have buggered off and that the board is poorer as a result. Yes, I miss them, yes it is a shame, but consider this - the presence of witty, intelligent individuals who are liked by a huge throng of people can equally be seen to have a limiting effect. If ppl are in awe of them and feel that they are extremely highly regarded, they might feel intimidated and less likely to post themselves. So, once the popular, eloquent, intelligent ilxors of yore disappear, it can be seen as a tragedy, but, equally, it can be seen as an opportunity for new ppl, or quiet old ppl, to really shine and show their true mettle.

This does however highlight something else I find intriguing - the fact that the FAQ of a board and the activities of its moderators never account for the sum total of rules. There are further, unwritten rules which a community creates in a looser sense and sometimes lurkers and ppl who post only rarely can feel intimidated by this, too. They may feel wary of posting more for fear of transgressing these vague rules which ppl somehow feel are there, as opposed to actually set in stone.

Like, for example, how much can you mess about rather than just engage in reasoned debate? How much can you pretend to be someone else? How many pictures can you post? I think most of us would say that the posting of pictures is about as much about bandwidth as the protests outside parliament right now about animal welfare, i.e. only a bit. Just as the countryside lobby are effectively saying "Don't be so townist" as much as anything else, so a person who complains about someone who posts the same picture 100 times are saying "this hacks me off" as much (or probably, more) as they are saying "this is wasting valuable bandwidth".

RANDOS, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago)

MarkH OTM. Also, I would like Nicole to come and sort out my real life conflicts please. Thanks.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Like, for example, how much can you mess about rather than just engage in reasoned debate?

i think there's a contingent that seems to mind if you do the latter.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:36 (twenty years ago)

There's certainly a contingent that minds if you do the former.

(I accidentally typed "mings" and almost left it for comedic purposes but that would undermine my point rather than enhancing it, whereas discussing it as a meta-aside allows the interjection of the intentional humor while dodging accusations of messing about and never adding anything of value to ILX, which people seem to be quuick and ready with these days; it also allows for me to write out a full paragraph about something that only needed a one line explanation, bloating my post to the point where people can say "Ah, obviously you are intelligent because it took you longer than a minute to write that."

These are things that in a perfect world I wouldn't give a shit about. Although, now that I think about it, I don't know if it's so much that I care about these things as much as it is that I want to say something snide about people who do because I care about these things but DON'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago)

"One way of making sense of this mess might be to refer (gingerly, I hope) to auteur theory. Say Tom Ewing and mark s and maybe The Pinefox and Jess Harvell and N. are the equivalent of Ford and Siegel and Haks--intentional posters, sure, but unselfconscious even when they're pretentious. Ambitious craftsmen who think about their place in history--Momus, HUNTA-D, Macello Carlin--are more like Preston Sturges (when they're good) or John Huston (who offers more than meets the eye but can still be a real jerk). All the new guys, meanwhile, are like, how about that, Godard and de Broca and Bourguignon. La nouvelle ILX, they used to call it.

To extend the metaphor, you could say that each of the latter two groups has produced its Allens and De Palmas, too, and while away the tween-sets trying to figure out who's who. The question then becomes--where's Francis Ford Coppola?"

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago)

i'm confused. in whose voice are you writing this? what does it mean?

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:02 (twenty years ago)

"Pinefox and Jess Harvell and N. are the equivalent of Ford and Siegel and Haks"

Jess is more like whoever directed Empire Records. Or maybe Pump Up The Volume. Miccio is definitely like whoever directed Gleaming The Cube.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:08 (twenty years ago)

So but the recurring theme of "ILX DYING" threads is that there used to be long "serious" discussions, right? Everyone writing giant posts and politely following one another's thought processes and smoking pipes and going "yes, quite, Dr. Pinefox, quite so."

Which is sort of true. But whenever I look back and see the threads that worked that way, it's pretty obvious why: it was always like ten people pretty much agreeing about something! It was like a bunch of guys at a bar talking about the Smiths, except writing it all down and using bigger words and nicer sentences.

There are way too many people here for it to work like that anymore. Which is perfectly cool and natural. But anyway so it seems strange to me for anyone to imagine that ILX has "gone downhill" because those posters have left. The reality is surely that the place itself has gotten a bit more crowded and rambunctious, and whatever posters yearn for some sort of sedate lucid serious-conversation have had to either adapt or just bow out. Sure, I miss when I first found this board and could stay on some sort of day-long mega-discussion about something fascinating and high-minded, but I also like the quality of the humor and the regional chats these days. So it's a wash.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Am, that post was written in my voice. It boils down to "I am fucking tired of feeling like I have to prove to a certain contingent on this board that I am intelligent because of my posting style; normally I really don't care but for about five minutes there I was feeling like a 13-year-old goth looking longingly at a Lacoste shirt".

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I can't see how having much more of you, Sinkah, Josh and so on having long serious discussions would diminish any of those newer positives, though. (xpost to Nabisco)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:14 (twenty years ago)

dan: i hope you didn't take my post to imply that at all (that you ened to be verbose etc. to be considered "intelligent"). i certainly couldn't have a higher opinion of your intelligence, dan. and i don't mind the different kinds of conversation here, since i participate as much in the "regional chats" and other "dumb" threads as anything else. i was just noting that a few times in recent months, myself and a few other posters have been ridiculed for taking something seriously in a way that would have been par for the course not long ago.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago)

So but the recurring theme of "ILX DYING" threads is that there used to be long "serious" discussions, right? Everyone writing giant posts and politely following one another's thought processes and smoking pipes and going "yes, quite, Dr. Pinefox, quite so."

I have never knowingly agreed with the Pinefox. I reject this thesis.

I liked Daniel's auteur analogy though, mainly because I was mentioned.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago)

FWIW that's pretty much what I imagine happens at every non-karaoke London FAP, only cricket and crumpets are also somehow involved.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Actually life in the US would probably be improved if the government made everyone eat crumpets.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago)

(I see that the comedic half-life of the word "crumpet" is approximately 0.0000000000000000000000013 seconds.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:23 (twenty years ago)

haha, I hope no one finds out where that quote was appropriated from.

nabisco, I don't think ppl are talking about what you described, or at least not exclusively about it. I mean, I get yer point - I've seen many early threads that read a bit like that, a very friendly atmosphere that perhaps didn't lead to that much actual debate (Miccio's tea party comment on one thread was very otm about this), but that time was long gone by the time I joined, in fact on ILM the overall climate was probably even more agressive than it is now (since it was around this time that a whole slew of new foaks appeared that in many cases weren't down with the Morley/Reynolds Freaky Trigger anti-rockism conglomerate of thoughts that the old guard repped for), but I still remember plenty of long threads full of insightful posts. And they're still around now, too, but losing ppl like mark s and John D means less people likely to start and/or engage in them. Not that I think that starting (yet another) thread about it is helping much, and thankfully ILX is so huge now that I don't really think that this type of discussion will cease to exist just coz a few folks have left (amateurist's thread on musicology is a good recent example), but yeah, they're missed.

The whole talk of Long, Inteligent Conversations vs Short Witty Banter seems pretty silly to me, tho, seems pretty obvious that a good forum needs both, and that the second option will be around a lot more than the first. I can't think of a time when the opposite was true re: ILX. Hell, I can't think of a time when the opposite was true in real life!

oops, John D almost never acting holier-than-thou was a big part of the moral compass that amteurist referred to! Moralist != moral

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Miccio is definitely like whoever directed Gleaming The Cube

have I told you lately that I love you, Scott?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:27 (twenty years ago)

As it happens, cuz I looked him up, the guy who directed Gleaming The Cube is a lot fancier than I thought. Not only did he edit Don't Look Now, The Man Who Fell To Earth, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and The Postman Always Rings Twice (the excellent remake), BUT he also directed Frances, one of my favorite movies. Hmmm, I might have to rethink this.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:41 (twenty years ago)

I got into a fight once because of Gleaming the Cube.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:42 (twenty years ago)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:48 (twenty years ago)

That was one dramatic fight!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Me and my friend were over at her house snarking on how terrible it was and her brother blew up and called us a couple of hypercritical bitches who enjoy ruining people's fun.

Not that he wasn't right, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a bad movie...

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago)

The AMG review is pretty good:

Gleaming the Cube does for skateboarding what Over the Top did for arm wrestling -- i.e. not a
hell of a lot. Christian Slater is the skateboarding star, playing Brian Kelly, a sneering and laconic
teen outcast. He feels left out and envious of his adopted Vietnamese brother Vinh's (Art
Chudabala) success as an honor roll student and as the center of attention in his family. When
Vinh commits suicide, Brian is suspicious and rolls away on his skateboard to find out what really
happened -- and ultimately to avenge his murder. Brian's investigation is aided and abetted by a
sardonic detective named Al Lucero (Steven Bauer), a collection of skateboard aficionados, and an
incredibly attractive Vietnamese girl, Tina (Min Luong). -- Paul Brenner

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago)

who enjoy ruining people's fun

You mean you hate fun? *hides*

See, now if Paul Bremer had done the review, it would have revealed new depths.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I just watched the trailer on IMDB. I have to see this. I'm not sure what the cube is and I have no idea how one gleams, let alone gleams the cube.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Now that's one I haven't seen.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago)

haha it is really weird and atypical that I rented this without watching it. I've watched all kinds of horrendous shit. I've seen Prayer Of The Rollerboys. Maybe it was a sign. Alright, I won't rent it. But I'm soo watching a bit if its on TV.

And if this is true then why did you say I'm like the director, Scott? After watching the ad I was flattered but now I'm not sure.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:58 (twenty years ago)

I got your mic in frame right here

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

It was the first thing that came to mind, anthony. Maybe cuz I said Jess was like Pump Up The Volume. He'll probably find that pretty flattering too. I was actually trying to remember the name of the bad stephen dorff movie where he robs a bank or something and he's a slacker and he sez slater stuff, but i couldn't remember it. It's got three letters, i think.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:04 (twenty years ago)

SFW!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

when we got to the scene in Hudson Hawk where Bruce Willis flies out of the ambulance on a gurney amidst a ton of other crazy random crazy shit, ILX poster Herbert Herbert asked me if I was the director. that was flattering.

that Dorff film was SFW, which was like evil bad.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Ah jinx x-post!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

It is worse than Gleaming the Cube.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago)

The only thing I remember about SFW was the Robbie Conal poster design. It was like my late eighties/early nineties LA experience suddenly went national.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago)

SFW was said three times, so Dorff should appear on our screens saying that nothing matters.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago)

"when all the great themes have been turned into theme parks"

that's the only line i can remember from pump up the volume. i wanna see that again.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Remember when somebody got the bright idea to release a film called Feeling Minnesota, quoting "Outshined," only it was released years later and who gave a fuck?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:08 (twenty years ago)

i hate stephen dorff. even though i like blade.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:09 (twenty years ago)

whenever they'd play "I Will Dare" on the radio they'd say it was from the Feeling Minnesota soundtrack.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I suppose I should be grateful the local alt-station was playing the song, but they made it rather hard.

sorry for helping to derail this thread. i can get it back on-topic: What would Momus think of Gleaming The Cube? And: Were the posts about Gleaming The Cube on old-ILX really long and thoughtful?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:14 (twenty years ago)

haha scott did you ever see my student film?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Scattered Gleaming ruminations of the past

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:16 (twenty years ago)

No, How would I have seen it?!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Scott, I think you'd like it and it would fit your theory: Fat Tony's Cancer.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:16 (twenty years ago)

It's a lurvly film, Anthony's is.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Pump Up The Volume is an awesome bit of indie propaganda: IF EVERYONE WOULD LISTEN TO THE PIXIES THERE WOULD BE REVOLUTION!

I wish I'd seen it in high school. Though I was already pompous enough.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I love Pump Up the Volume! I don't care if it's pathetic of me.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I will watch it on Maria's new computer, Anthony. Mine is waaaaaaay too slow.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago)

awesome! I'm curious what you'd think.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:21 (twenty years ago)

do you still make movies? you should. everyone should make movies.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Nicole - I know you. Not your name, but your game.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm either gonna watch Mr.Hulot's Holiday tonight or the angelina jolie serial killer movie i got from netflix. it's a toss-up.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:26 (twenty years ago)

that was my junior year project in film school, Scott. my senior year me and Herbert Herbert made a documentary about Christa McAuliffe (not on the net). Haven't done anything film related in 2+ years. A friend actually showed Fat Tony's Cancer to some guy somewhere on the MTV totem pole who was interested in pitching it as a series. I had really few ideas, though and didn't follow through on it. I'd learned from other film grads that those kind of things are like lottery tickets unless you put a lot of effort into it, and I'm not inspired or motivated enough in that direction to bother.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you really have to work that shit.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:32 (twenty years ago)

it was really weird cuz a) the guy who was showing the film didn't work on it and b) it happened 2 years after I made it! When I watch the film now I'm really proud of it but it'd be hard for me to try and recreate. I was really inspired by all the bad shit my fellow students were making and without that environment to bounce off of I just have no real motivation to make more.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Methinks this Jimmy Gator is stirring the effluent. Its rather tiring. As one of the so-called nu-ILX I take exception to having elders or betters, especially when they're probably younger than me. Young whippersnappers.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 08:38 (twenty years ago)

(I read up until about the middle of this thread and then decided to post this. The topic of discussion may have moved on since then.)

Just FYI (yes, I'm still up):

I'm too afraid to get involved in a lot of debates here, because my personal points of view differ so widely from those of the great majority of people here. I've definitely changed in a lot of ways in the past 17 months of participating in this forum to where I'm not as intolerant as I used to be, but at the same time, there are certain things that are non-negotiable, and I'm never going to be dissuaded from feeling the way that I feel in those areas. My goals and intentions for sticking around ILX have changed since the first time I logged in around here; previously, I'd been looking for intellectual stimulation, but now I want that PLUS a sense of acceptance, a sense of feeling that at least half of the people around here like me, perhaps regardless of what my personal opinions are. So I strive to be as noncontroversial as possible, keep many of my thoughts and ideas at bay, not reveal what it is that goes through my mind in public unless it's also noncontroversial or at least is something that the great majority of individuals here can agree with.

It's also rather difficult for me to get involved with ILX for many hours on end, unless I decide to stay up all night, like I'm foolishly sorta attempting to do right now. I don't dare to get involved at work, because I know my employers and I know my chances of being a target of their ire and disapproval would be rather great if I did anything entertainment-wise online. So I stick with my usual round of academic-oriented sites, which they seem to not have any issue with. And my schedule is so tightly packed that it's a challenge even just trying to maintain a presence around here.

I wish I could post things around here that would gain me some sort of intellectual respect. I wish I had that kind of mental reservoir to draw from. I wish my ideas and ideals were such that I could share them all with you, without editing, without fearing that I'd provide more fuel for those who wish to despise or discount me. (I really hate being disliked or dismissed.) I wish I had more time to involve myself with a lot of the non-controversial discussions around here. As always, I wish my musical trivia knowledge extended to much more than just the one musical artist. I wish I could contribute so much more here, because I certainly don't want to get viewed as one of the wastes of space around here, a void only willing to discuss the most trite and everyday of things.

I guess what one wishes and what one gets are two completely different things.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Dee the last thing people want is a forum full of people saying just the same thing. Differing opinions, put in a considered manner are what stimulates debate.

That said, I do know where you're coming from. This also ties in with the stuff about women in online discussions above, but I often stay clear of a lot of bollocks on ILM with subjects I do know about because I either:
Can't be bothered to waste my day typing at a load of people who won't respect my viewpoint anyway.
Or
Can't face being shouted down. Ego is a fragile thing. I ned to be in a fairly bolshy mood to wade into the fray.

Al Swearengen, Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:24 (twenty years ago)

ILM is NOT THAT SCARY. It's really not. I spend a lot of time on ILM (sad, i know) And people rarely get shouted down and most people are respectful of each other. Does it get "spirited" and bitchy and dumb and silly and rude? Of course it does, but so does ILE. Start threads on anything you want or on anything you love. Or revive old threads on stuff you like. ILM can be a lot of fun. I don't like fighting or scariness on the internet either. I wouldn't hang out on ILM if I thought everyone was out to get everyone else. You know? There are always gonna be jerks and people looking for a fight on any forum, but it really is the minority on ILX. On all of ILX.

For pete's sake, I just started a thread on ILM about a lollipop! Everyone loves lollipops!

I need help.

Actually, John Darnielle's forums just threw up a better discussion (of addiction amongst many other things) than I've seen on here in a long time.

I should be posting less, as I should be reading less. Haha the other thread that I read recently was the one for the previous Club FT! This one should keep me clean for another month :)

(the answer to the thread question is yes. Sorry, but it is. Two of the three listed, though they have the rhetorical skills to pay the bills, were also interested in discussion as (godhelpme) a journey rather than a circuit. Ned and Alex, entertaining as they are, don't have this.)

I think that is actually an interesting remark re 'journey rather than a circuit'. it's perhaps a shame that the person who started this thread could not be bothered to develop their question better from the outset so that we may have avoided so much circuitry on here.

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:49 (twenty years ago)

the thing I don't get about this thread is that I can't really see many posts saying "yes ILX is rubbish" and I can see about 99 saying "No ILX is not rubbish you pricks".

Who the you is I have no idea.

As regards ILM, it's still a good place I think, there is a good buzz about talking about new things with nice people who like them too. Simple truth is I don't know anyone in real life who likes some of the stuff I like, not cos it's crazily obscure, I just don't know people who like it. That's where ILM comes in.

I have never felt it to be too intimidating but then as far as debate goes I don't mind much. I'm probably more intimidated on ILE to be honest. I know where I am with records!

Even though it is a topic that can (and did) get heated and personal, it is also chock full of some interesting and thoughtful posts, including yours truly making an effort to contribute with something more meaty. Now, I did this mainly because the topic of conciousness, dreams, spirituality etc interests me greatly. toby (tsg20), Friday, 17 September 2004 06:52 (twenty years ago)

i mean, is there any legitimate way to become old skool ILX without having been an ILX newbie at some point?

you can't become old skool - you either are or you're not. (once a n00b always a noob etc)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:21 (twenty years ago)

This is all rather silly.

Yes, just pretend like you've been here a long time. Most people can't keep track anyway. People are surprised as hell when I remind them when I started posting:
"Oh, I thought you had been here much longer!" etc.
I'm just gonna stop reminding people starting now.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:43 (twenty years ago)

Haha tes, you could pick some old shooler username who doesn't post here anymore, and claim to be them!

Drift along
Drift along
Gonna find them
Drift along
Gonna find them
Drift along

Need to make is special
Need to make it new
Looking for the action
Something more to do
Underneath the pavement
Towers in the clouds
Gotta find the action
Need it soon
Right now

Drift along

Cause I've been searching for all the people
I used to turn to and
All the people who knew the answers
Let's get the feeling again

Back in sweet suburbia
Middle of the road
Looking for the action
Everywhere I go
Need to make it special
Need to make it knew
Looking for the action
Something more to do

Drift along

Cause I've been searching for all the people
I used to turn to and
All the people who knew the answers
Let's get the feeling again

Advice For New ILXers

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Fragile seams
I opened up too quick and all my dreams
Were walking out I'd slowly
Lost my fire
With every single man a river cried

I had no sensation
Completely numb, left with no satisfaction
I thought no-one could ever get me high again
I swear
I was not looking

Oh, waited so long
I thought the real thing was a fake
I thought it was a tool to break me down
You proved me wrong again

If love were liquid it would drown me
In a placeless place would find me
In a heart shape come around me and then
Melt me slowly down
If love were human it would know me
In a lost space come and show me
Hold me and control me and then
Melt me slowly down
Like chocolate

Tastes so good
My heart's been mended who'd have
thought it would
An empty bet and still I won the cash
A man who I love and who
Loves me back

If love were liquid it would drown me
In a placeless place would find me
In a heart shape come around me and then
Melt me slowly down
If love were human it would know me
In a lost space come and show me
Hold me and control me and then
Melt me slowly down
Like chocolate

Zoom in, catch the smile
There's no doubt it's from you
And I'm addicted to it now

Just one look boy to melt me down
Just one heart here to save me now
Your candy kisses are sweet I know
Hold me tight baby don't let go
Just one look boy to melt me down
Just one heart here to save me now
Your candy kisses are sweet I know
Hold me tight baby don't let go
