Getting vaguely back on track, I guess -- edited for timing:

----

mmm...i dont know if it's true for all problem child movies.
i mean in Todd Solondz's ones he uses those colors, to portrate a cynical view of the "perfect" familys as portraid in tv american series (from Brady bunch forward) gone wrong.

but if you take Larry Clark's movies, which tend to be realistic, i don't think your mark is seen.

I heard that Marylin Manson had his cock removed, so that he could suck his own ribs. I have also heard whisper that Led Zeppelin allegedly took turns to fist a camel on the "Houses of the holy" tour, and forced a reporter to lick their hands clean. In 1978, Crummy crutch, of liverpool band "Anal Storm", masturbated to completion an alsatian onstage, and swallowed the resulting fluid, which he then french-kissed into the drummers mouth. he then smeared "Chappie" dog food on his nethers, and the dog returned the compliment.
I have also been informed that Jim Kerr of Smple minds regularly places his glass eye up his rectum, and farts it out into the audience. the lucky finder gets to go backstage after the show.these are all rumours, and, I am not for a second, making a statement of truth. but what is a scientific fact, according to my opinion,is that whatever Eltons hair is made of, it looks fucking stupid.

Thanks to all of you for giving me the biggest laugh I've had in ages. I've been reading this site for the past hour and I've now wet myself. It's a good job Justin has a great sense of humour. He'll need one if he ever came across this.
Just to clear up a couple of things:

1. Justin doesn't live in Italy. He lives in Monte Carlo.

2. "Marie" is one song, "Heart of Steel" is another and they are nothing to do with each other.

3. His wife is not rich. She plays golf amateurly which means she earns no money from it and she was never a successful model - only part-time. Before they married she was working in the cloakroom of the club where they met (not exactly a job that pays millions!).

4. Yes, she is/was less attractive than him but then that also goes for a large percentage of the world's population.

5. I saw him in the flesh just a few weeks ago. Very charming, very classy and still very hot!

6. That is a f****** awful picture of him.

Weird thing last night: we were playing some slowcore jazz and all of a sudden my eyes stung and teared up, like someone blew smoke in my face (which is impossible, because of the smoking ban) or because of freshly cut onions (which would be weird, because the kitchen is on the other side of the club).

Then it happened again in the second set, when we were playing THE SAME SONG.

ok well it started out innocuously annoying enough, just two dumbass German tourists standing on the way of the escalator. Who apparently could not understand any permeation of "Excuse me" "Pardon me" "MOVE YOUR BLEACHED BLONDE ASS" etc etc. OK whatever. But then at the top of the escalator they proceed to STOP AND TAKE OUT THEIR MAP AND DISCUSS THEIR NEXT MOVE (keep in mind it's like 9:15 right now, at Metrocenter). They are literally two inches from the top of the escalator. It is impossible to get past them. They kind of get crowded and tossed around so they move up slowly, being all like "Oh so sorry ha ha ha" to every dude who basically shoves them. Then this old black lady goes to pass and they just won't move, so she finally yells "PPL ARE TRYING TO GO TO WORK, GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE" and they start saying some REALLY AWFUL RACIST SHIT IN GERMAN. I'm right behind them so I repeat "PPL ARE TRYING TO GO TO WORK, GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE" except I also threw in "cunts" and said it to them in German and they get all horrified and start doing the "oh so sorry" act again. So I called them Nazis, asked them why they were nice to white ppl but rude to this poor old lady, and ended up SHOVING one of the bitches to the ground because they were all uppity about being told off about their racism.

Then I bust out laughing and yelled "PLOTZ" at her which is the german command to tell a dog to sit and stay and then old lady and I "ran" out of the metro.

Human mysticism, which thus represents the last traces of vitality, also became the fountainhead of mechanical sadism in Hitlerism. From the deepest sources of biologic functioning still remaining, the cry for "freedom" wins through again and again, notwithstanding all the rigidity and enslavement. There is not a single social movement that could advocate the "suppression of life" as part of its program and hope to win over masses of people. Every single one of the many different social movements that suppress the self-regulation of life energy, advocates "freedom" in one form or another: freedom from sin; redemption from the "earthly", the freedom of lebensraum; the freedom of the nation; the freedom of the proletariat; the freedom of culture; etc., etc. The various cries for freedom are as old as the ossification of the human plasma.
The cry for freedom is a sign of suppression. It will never cease as long as man feels himself to be trapped. No matter how different the cries for freedom may be, at bottom they always express one and the same thing: the intolerableness of the organism's rigidity and the mechanical institutions of life, which are sharply at variance with the natural sensations of life. If there should ever be a society in which all the cries for freedom fade away, then man will have finally overcome his biological and social deformity and have achieved genuine freedom. Not until man acknowledges that he is fundamentally an animal, will he be able to create a genuine culture.
Man's "upward strivings" are nothing but the biologic development of vital powers. Such strivings are conceivable only within the framework of the laws of biologic development and not in opposition to them. The will to freedom and the capacity for freedom are nothing but the will and the capacity to recognize and promote the unfolding of man's biologic energy (with the aid of the machine). It is out of the question to talk about freedom if man's biologic development is choked and feared.
Under the influence of politicians, masses of people tend to ascribe the responsibility for wars to those who wield power at any given time. In World War I it was the munitions industrialists; in World War II it was the psychopathic generals who were said to be guilty. This is passing the buck. The responsibility for wars falls solely upon the shoulders of these same masses of people, for they have all the necessary means to avert war in their own hands. In part by their apathy, in part by their passivity, and in part actively, these same masses of people make possible the catastrophes under which they themselves suffer more than anyone else. To stress this guilt on the part of masses of people, to hold them solely responsible, means to take them seriously. On the other hand, to commiserate with masses of people as victims, means to treat them as small, helpless children. The former is the attitude held by the genuine freedom-fighters; the latter the attitude held by the power-thirsty politicians.

The problem with saying "worst track ever" is that it creates a seemingly unresolvable paradox; the fact that it's the worst track ever makes it interesting, and therefore it couldn't be the worst track ever. It has to be something so middling, hopelessly mediocre and sickening, yet lying on the border of irredeemably bad and barely tolerable. My vote goes to "Bucky Done Gun" by MIA.

As has been said MANY times above, the Tamil Tigers are classified by the US gov't as a terrorist organization, and I do tend to agree with them for once. This is the group who invented suicide bombing.

I don't trust the US government's judgment in this area. Since 9/11, rebel violence gets painted with the broad brush of terrorism, without question of any other factors (e.g. does a group attack primarily civilian or military targets), while certain countries' ties to terrorism are conveniently overlooked (Saudi Arabia).

Do people have the moral right to engage in violent struggle against an unjust government? Any patriotic American who says "no" needs a history lesson. There's an interesting Wikipedia entry on sucide bombers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_bombers - that makes it sound like the Tamil Tigers primarily go after military and government targets. I'm not saying they're a bunch of choirboys, but I do see a difference between military vs. civilian suicide bombings. Desperate people take desperate measures, and sometimes you can't blame the mud for bringing the rain. I work with a Sri Lankan, I should ask him.

The film The Battle Of Algiers is an interesting + balanced look at the question of terrorism vs. freedom fighting. The Algerians practically invented civilian targeting (a reprehensible act, to be sure), but they were locked in a brutal struggle for independence. Some of what the French did in Algeria makes Guantanamo Bay look like Club Med (such as killing peaceful demonstrators and castrating prisoners to get them to talk - this is stuff that's not in the film). The Algerian success in driving the French out of their country (which was essentially a province of France at the time) was a great incentive for terrorists/freedom fighters/whatever for decades to come.

Have to read that Christgau piece...

This show is the best thing going on television, as far as quality bad acting goes. Everyone (including actors doing one-time guest spots) delivers their lines in the same weird stilted cadences...and they are forced to constantly regurgitate the same pet phrases that the scriptwriter(s) seem so fond of using. In every episode, there will be at least one instance of a character saying "for a minute there I thought that you were [x, where x=pregnant, having an abortion, quitting school, shacking up, etc.]. (pause, followed by furrowed brow indicating grave concern) You aren't planning on doing [x}, are you? (another pause, as concern switches to a look of near-exasperation) [insert character's name]!Please tell me you're not planning on [doing x]!"

MOM: Oh that is such a relief, Simon...for a moment there I thought you were going to tell me that you were quitting school. (pause for several beats as she scans Simon's tentative expression) You aren't planning on quitting school, are you? Simon! Please tell me you're not planning on quitting school!

They had odd "theme" episodes during the would-be final season-- one show had all this Gershwin stuff running through it; while another had a running thread concerning how the different characters ate their Oreo cookies.

I find it much more entertaining than say, The O.C.

My sister and I are not close now, but when we were young we did sexually play with each other. She claims she doesn't remember anything about it but has problems with sex that indicates something happened when she was younger. So the question I have; is the dream about a wanted sexual encounter she is subconsiously wanting or is it about something different.

I guess I've been hanging around here long enough to introduce myself...

I'm Tuomas Alho from Helsinki, Finland. I'm twenty-three going on twenty-four, and I study at the Helsinki University, majoring in Third World studies (ie. trying to save the world). What else... I've listened to electronic music and hip hop ever since I was a teenager, and I've never liked rock. Later on, I've expanded my horizons to jazz, funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian music etc. Nowadays I like almost anything with a strong rhythm and no distorted guitars.

I'm not an active InterWeb user (I've never owned a computer), so you won't see me here too often. Oh, and I do have strong political views (I'm an anarchist/vegan/conscientious objector), but I never preach. I guess that's it. You seem to be a nice bunch of people, glad to be here.

One more thing: could someone please tell me how to make my typing appear in italic or bold. I have no idea how it's done.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

Some stuff edited out:

The Mat is bustling for noon on a weekday. The hum of spinning washers, the clink of change, and the slam of dryer doors creates a symphony of domestic productivity. I breathe deeply the perfumed soap air. It warms my dampened spirits.

I haphazardly separate and stuff clothes into machines and am two dollars deep into pumping in silver when it happens. "Where mah clothes?! Don't throw shit at me, you lil' bitch!" Before I even turn my head I can tell what this woman looks like: big. Black. Hard. There's a black man in a Minnesota Vikings jacket yelling back at her. "Fuck you, dis mah shit!" He's referring to the claim he's laid on the nearby washer. The woman is throwing a pink plastic clothes bin at him. "Ya broke ass bitch, I'm gonna fight chu!!" There's a third guy trying to defuse the situation, but neither of them hear him. Everyone else has stopped mid-fold to stare, t-shirts and sweatpants held in limp limbo.

She takes a swing at him and he swings back. Both miss. The woman chases him outside. As they pass I smell booze. She's screaming, "Ya bitch, they should kill yo state money ass!! They should kill you!!" Now patron mumbles of disbelief rise above the rinse cycle. My mind drifts to the subtle joy I get from warm socks.

My dryer dream is shaken when the cops show up. Mr. Minnesota shrugs them off slightly conspicuously when they ask him something, and they come inside. The woman's story starts: "He pulled a knife on me two days ago and threw a chair at me and he hit me with a basket..." I get a good look at the woman for the first time. She is addicted to something - dope, pills, deadbeat men.

Immediately the cops go back outside, where Minnesota Joe (at this point I've learned his name is Danny, but it doesn't have as good a ring to it) tells them he didn't do anything. He has his hands shoved deep in his jacket and the cops are yelling at him to take his hands out slowly and turn around. Joe refuses. I wince at this and imagine him having a gun. I realize I am in the line of fire beyond the glass doors, but I don't move. Joe's bluffing. The preemptive wince was for what happens next. The barking goes back and forth until the Viking is eventually thrown face-down into a puddle and cuffed. I hear words like "police brutality," "because I'm black," and several times, "lawyer."

The female officer comes in to ask me if I was a witness, if I thought their use of force was excessive. I want to say that the puddle seemed melodramatic, but instead I lie and say no because she is somewhat attractive. The blues leave as quickly as they came and The Mat returns to its disinterested whirrs and clicks. I wonder if the woman will go bail him out of jail. I glance over at her as I pull a towel out of the dryer. She will.

From the "Fat Boy" vs "Pieces Of You" thread:

Snaggletooth
Goes to the bathroom
Sees her reflection
Doesn’t know what to do
She feels little inside
Except crooked teeth against her tongue
Oh, fragile flame
When no one sees the same

Snaggletooth
Never laughs wide
Or smiles when guys walk by
They like her tits
But alas those gnarled chicklets
Hidden behind her lips

Oh, fragile flame
When no one feels the same

Hush, sleep
Don’t think
Just grind your teeth
You’re daddy’s little girl
You’re momma’s whole world
Never know the feel of a drill
Because they won't pay the orthodontists bill

And snaggletooth says
Wouldn’t it be nice?
If I could spit them out one by one
Or get punched in the mouth
And then just Fixadent and forget it

Oh, fragile flame
Sometimes I feel the same

according to Wikpedia, in the "cultural impact" section of the Meiwes entry:

In 2006, the Greek artist Doulo painted "Meiwes," a controversial abstract work celebrating Meiwes as a hero of the common man.

I thought about this for a minute and I think I have figured out how this angle must work. Meiwes is the hero of the common man because he got another man to eat his own fried penis. Am I missing anything?

funny you should mention it, this, along with quality and general quality, is an important consideration. Starship Troopers for example has a large number of boobies of the naked variety, they are "just" OK. To complement this, Denise "Mona Lisa" Richards possesses quite extraordinary boobs that are kept under wraps throughout, but the quantity (1 pair) and clothed-nature is offset by the aforesaid extraordinary quality.

From the past:

Most of the really interesting slang actually comes from prisons. Seeing as how I've never been to prison, don't identify with convicts in the least, I try to avoid it. It also sounds pretty ignorant and juvenile, seeing how it is obviously something that must be conciously worked into speech. There's a guy I work with that makes me chuckle each time he simply says, "What up, kid, how's it goin', son?" with just such a laid back/cool/dangerous/sneaky expression. I answer, "not too shabby, you?" He answers, "chill, chill". That amuses me.

Some phrases simply stay around so long, they become much more "norm". By then, the real cool cats have moved on to some other slang, of course. Yo, what dat jive turkey be talkin' bout?! Did I mention poor grammar and overuse of the adjectives "fuck" and "motherfuckin'" are considered ignorant? It's true! A "good mind" is classified by good speech, as our whole symbolism is represented to ourselves by way of semantics. It's psychology. One who has control of semantics can express himself critically.

Like, I remember when "like" was, like, a valley girl thing. Now it's common. So all slang cannot be avoided. Eventually, I wonder if it's even slang anymore.

-- (ignoranc...), April 25th, 2001.

I don't want to sit in filth and piss any more than the next guy, but I really don't think that we as a society need to put our resources into fancy plastic sleeves to keep our asses from ever touching anything that another ass has touched. I think I would rather die of ass-bacteria like a human being than be the sort of person who requires a glorified butt-condom to take a dump outside the home. Half of everyone else on the planet is pooping in holes in the ground -- those of us without open sores on our asses can probably deal with just wiping off any obvious stains and leaving the rest to chance.

Dan (ROFFLE) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 June 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

Regarding the message on top, from "InterHygiene Automated Toilet Seat Protection". That was my message, but I put all those words instead of my name in the name field, because I didn't want to put my name. So as I seem to need an identity now, call me "AAA 96" (and don't think those are my initials or age!).

First: Hey, guys, for once, you've got something interesting to read about, and especially a REAL solution, not just gossip.... and I bet many readers never saw such a toilet seat system, so my message should fit well on this page, right? Maybe not for gossip lovers, but in theory, it should.

Second: Sorry for those who consider my previous message as spam. I found that automatic seat so funny and useful that I said "Why not share it?" Anyway, I'm just a user like you. I'm not owning that seat or that company, I'm not affiliated to it either, if that's what you thought. I was just astonished by the system and thought of it when seeing this page.

Third: doesn't anybody want to talk about solutions to this page's topic, or is it just a chat-room for ALL EXCEPT the topic?

So, I apologize for those who felt somehow agressed by my message, but I hope at least one person will have learnt that there actually IS a solution to this page's topic...

People who want to talk about that plastic sleeve system are welcome to drop some constructive lines. I wonder if anybody actually has an opinion on that, and would like to see constructive comments.

Ciao!

In my rich fantasy life I envision her being kidnapped and taken on tour with Deicide, where they make her work the T-shirt and sticker table.

This image makes my day, with her set up at the table next between the pizza hut stand and elevators that go to the luxury suites, scowling and wearing a black tshirt. She spends the next 3 hours alternating between arguing with some 14 year over which $25 shirt to buy, and sitting there bored, idly doodling on the legal pad they gave her to track sold merch and playing with her laminate.

"C'mon, cmon', kid, which shirt do ya want?"

she takes a 15 min break to go buy a $4 Edy's Ice Cream before returning to rearrange what stickers are left. Her 32 oz diet coke is running perilously low, but the guys at the pizza hut stand refuse to take her order.

This reminds me of stocking up for a spring break camping trip with a Sweedish friend of mine. She was awed by the volume and variety of food and utencils and toys and whatnot in this jumbo grocery store in Colorado. This was totally for show. "Oh my god, look at all those pickles. How many brands are there? In my grocery store we only have one kind. What's your favorite pickle? I bet you have a favorite brand of pickle, don't you?" This went on for a while with me denying that I had a favorite brand of pickle, and her saying things like, "Are you aware that the rest of the world is not like this?" And finally I broke down and started yelling about the fact that I am aware of the rest of the world and my culture and economics and the fact that she is fucking trying to pull off this bullshit Coming to America act and I'm not buying it, and SHE CAN SHOVE HER THIRD WORLD ROOT CELLAR GROCERY STORE DOWN HER COD-HOLE, and then we both have a laugh and I buy the Claussen Dills, BECAUSE THEY ARE FUCKING THE BEST PICKLES IN THE WHOLE FUCKING STORE FUCK SWEEDEN, and then we move on to the sandwitch meats and it begins again.

As a side note, it has been my experience that Europeans often do not understand when we Americans are being ironic in our love of our culture.

Also, "In Sweeden, groceries buy you!" flew completely over her head which made me feel superior (and yes, I am aware of what I just said).

Dan (Almost Redeems The Song!) Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 11 June 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

For a while in college I was an education major. After taking this one introductory course, I realized what a god-awful mistake that was. This professor was by far one of the dumbest people I've ever met. There was one chapter of the textbook dedicated to "philosophies of education" so she felt compelled to lecture on that, despite having absolutely no understanding of what any of them meant or how they really operated. Most her descriptions were limited to a few brief sentences. A couple of the "philosophies" were divided by region, such as the Native Americans who "believe in teamwork. They think that a team can accomplish more than an individual." There were also the Buddhists who "believe in reincarnation. They believe that when you die you come back alive as an animal. If you were good, you come back as a good animal, or if you were bad, you probably come back as a snake or a rat or something similar" (how this applies to education, I have no idea). When she finally came to existentialism, her description was: "These are the people who have a chip on their shoulder. Do you all know what that phrase means? Chip on the shoulder? [Pantomime putting something on her shoulder] They always have a problem with something. Existentialists believe you shouldn't care about other people, just yourself. They have chips on their shoulders."
That was when I knew I could never possibly work in public education.

-- like murderinging, June 11th, 2006. (later)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watching a roomfull of near a hundred people jot down notes during this lecture was definitely the onset of an existential crisis.

Does anyone else agree? All they did was pop in a DVD, and sing/play a bit of guitar over the backing tracks. Zero improvisation. Zero energy or soul. I ended up seeing them twice, the second time as a favor to a friend and they even had the same stage banter. Probably the most rehearsed uninspired live show I've ever seen. Orange marmalade is a long-recognized symbol both of patriarchal dominance -- the breast-like globes destroyed, imprisoned in pectin, and reduced to their purest subservience as a food source -- and of subliminated homoeroticism -- the seed-bearing fruit, the testes of the phallic tree, consumed in a sort of transgressive nod to Communion.

So, yes, obviously.

On the other hand, all of this is subverted by the two missing punctuation marks in the thread title: the apostrophe, the most masculine of the in-sentence marks for its shape and the way it dangles over the letters which crouch below it; and the implied exclamation mark, the phallus of the imperative intensifier.

So, no, obviously.

momus, you are a dick... like for seriously, why is it that there is always someone who pulls out the PC (political correctness, not personal computer) and just has to be all kinds of wishy washy about things that should be done... people were taught right and wrong at a very young age, and if you're confused about it, then you should probably just shoot yourself at this point because there is no hope for you. I am so tired of these people who get all caught up in being PC and never do anything abotu solving actual problems. you know that's why they call it PC anyway... because like in politics, nothing ever gets solved, it is rather lost in a sea of technicalities.

i just saw the promiscuous boy video and nelly furtado amazingly looks SEXY in it! i really like the song, neither timbaland nor nelly seem like promiscuous ppl at all, theyre both kind of nerdy and i like them. i have no idea why theyre pretending to be promiscous! is it to downplay the intensity of their attraction?! it is a song worth talking about you dull/bitter clowns - fuck you and your jaded vaudeville act!

-- karri miback (sr...), June 4th, 2006.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

i shd add that i really like how promiscuous girl keeps the slightly mystical 'world music' rocks & hills vibe of that annoying worthy album that nelly did last time, just enough that it sez 'THIS IS NELLY' but leaves out 'and check out how wholesome i am', and then those synths in the chorus are so melancholy, its so much more of a love song than a promiscuity song.

It's 4 years old but I LOLed:

This reminds me of a story:

An evil female friend of mine was teasing a girl in one of her classes (this was eighth grade) and asking her if she had a boner. The victim, being fairly innocent, said, "A boner? What's that?" My friend immediately responded, "Oh, it's just something that happens to girls sometimes," and walked away.

Several days later, the victim walked up to my friend and whispered, "Umm, don't tell anyone, but I think I've got a boner." My friend immediately ran down the hall shouting, "_______'s got a boner! _______'s got a boner!" The victim ran after shouting, "DON'T TELL EVERYBODY! SHHH! SHHH!"

For the rest of the year, the phrase "I think I've got a boner" was high comedy.

Frankly, it's all about the concluding phrase:

---

I liked Buffy but never watched it enough to get really into it. But I rented all of Firefly and then Serenity from Netflix and watched it all in like a weekend and dreamed about it and was mini-obsessed and was really, really bummed when Walsh died and had a crush on pretty much every cast member all at once and generally got so into it that I thought that I should probably rent all the Buffy episodes, too, since I liked what I did watch quite a bit.

Then I watched the special features on the Firefly DVDs and decided what I would really rather do is choke Josh Wheedon a little bit.

Having dispensed with the big guns of Trinidad, Paraguay and Ecuador there is no one left in this tournament to trouble us. I think what was said on this site about Martina McBrides song was absolutely rude and inhumane towards people who have disabilities. I personally have a disability that affects my physical ability to walk but it doesn't affect my brain and I want to speak out for those who may have cognitive deficites. They are people too. If you think about it the way those of you who posted on this site proves to me that perhaps the ones with the disabilities may not in fact be the child in that song or me for that matter, the one is you because you have the inability to see the human side of every person and the dignity each person has. Please refrain from posting rude and inacurate information about people you do not even know. Everyone has the right to be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. Just because we are different doesn't make us any less than you. Right now I don't think much of you because of the way you have treated innocent people who God created in His Image and likeness. Please keep your ignorant comments to yourself and for future reference do a little research before posting such things that you did. Try reading about some of the great things people with disabilities have done for you in this world. You know the phone would have never been created if there were not deaf people in this world.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 26 June 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

Regarding the quote in topic, yeah, the relationship status on Facebook does lead to a lot of awkward situations. A friend of mine had that she was married to her boyfriend on Facebook. After they broke up for a while, he eventually changed the setting to say single which automatically did it for her profile too. It was like a whole 'nother stage of breaking up.

There's an annoying girl at my job who has some serious growing up to do. One of her many horrifying common behaviors is playing "house" at the job and designating different coworkers as different members of her family. For a while she had a huge crush on me, and thus I became the husband. Whenever new people were hired, she'd excitedly hug me and exclaim in her nasal voice, "This is Derek, he's my husband! He's the best husband in the world!" Then she'd switch to a more serious tone to warn the girls that they'd better not flirt with me. Terrifying. Of course, she wanted to marry me on Facebook. After weeks of continually reminding me that I have yet to click "yes" that we are indeed married, I finally gave in and did it. After a while, trying to finally give her the message that I'm not interested, I switched to being married with another one of our coworkers, a girl I'm good friends with but my "wife" hated. When she saw that I'd switched the status, she had a real break down. Female co-workers told me about her heart break over the incident.

In conclusion, jesus christ, be glad you're not on Facebook.

12. Chris was a big wrestling fan. (This is in the mid-'80s, after the AWA and right around the WWF's mega popularity.) So much so, in fact, that he insisted that it was real. So he and my mom got into an argument one afternoon about, no shit, whether professional wrestling was real or not. A three-hour argument. I sat in my room w/my ear to the door, listening, and burying my face in a pillow so no one would hear my laughter. It got louder as it progressed; my mom later told me that during these retarded arguments, she would move closer to my bedroom door so I could hear them better.

Finally, after three nonstop hours of this, the unthinkable occurred: Chris broke down and agreed. "You're right," he finally acceded, "professional wrestling isn't real." Oh happy day! I opened the bedroom door, went into the living room, and we were a happy family again. Then Chris opened his mouth again.

"Yeah," he said. "You're right. How silly of me. Professional wrestling isn't real. Not like roller derby."

Does anyone think a solution could be to send the entire squad down the mines for 6 months? Or perhaps a programme involving "heads kicked in in a scrum"?
Maybe you could bring back Howard Wilkinson or George Graham and create a programme called "A GOOD STINT OF HARD WORK".

Long, long ago I wrote a college-level paper on this, using the word "tap" as my primary example. Words all go through transformations where they are first applied metaphorically to novel situations or objects where primary words are unavailable or unsatisfactory, then the metaphoric meaning is captured as a primary meaning.

Incidentally, "tap" probably started in proto-Indo-European as an onomatopoetic word.

what on earth is funny about the photo of Beckham crying? perhaps someone crying is amusing if you're 7.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't really find it that funny but I do giggle a little when I imagine Posh Spice sighing aggravatedly after a couple months of Beckham bitching.

Is it time for a new excelsior thread?

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Ronan, a spoilt brat of a grown man on a ridiculous team sobbing his little heart out like a five year old because of a game is always, always funny. Especially when you immediately imagine Rooney going about kicking ppl in the nuts, just off screen. It's like an encapsulation of every single "Funniest Videos" shows ever made. If they weren't a bunch of grown men acting like 7 year olds, it wouldn't be funny. They also might win a tournment amrite. also, n/a totally OTM so I'm with the whole new thread idea.

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Thursday, 6 July 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

this has probably been posted in an earlier excelsior thread but oh man did it ever make me roffle:

Two of my coworkers almost got into a physical fight the other day. The male one has a lot of disgusting, annoying habits (chewing 20 pieces of gum at once loudly, chewing tobacco at his desk (!!!), banging really loud on his keyboard to look busy, reading porn all day, imitating people, etc). The girl one is very high strung and stressed. For some reason, it was deemed a good idea to sit them together. She tells him to stop being so noisy. He then proceeds to tell me and an unrelated coworker that he was going to be as annoying as possible to piss her off all day. Banging around, spitting tobacco loudly, etc. So at one point he leans over her cubicle and yells "SCOOBY DOO!" in her face. She pretty much dives over the cubicle yelling "FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU".
THis goes on at least ONCE A WEEK in my office.
