standard rubric:

This is the thread where you ask moderators to delete or modify posts or threads elsewhere on ILX, or you alert us to stuff happening elsewhere on ILX that you think we shouldn't know about.

A quick reminder - the idea is that as few posts as possible get moderated or deleted. If you've posted something and you now regret it or are embarrassed by it and it's about yourself we probably won't delete it, for instance. If you've revealed a real name other info about somebody else then we probably will. ILX assumes people are intelligent and responsible and able to think before they post.

If you don't want to alert the moderators publically then email one of us - though this option might take longer.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just found out I can read ILX on my mobile phone (WAP). I'm flabbergasted, stunned, overwhelmed. It's amazing. So my request is, because you have to scroll through so many threads, can you put in a feature that places the interesting threads at the top of the list? You know the good ones that people want to read. Funny, interesting ones. What do you mean you can't....hey....wait a minute....

It's true though about the phone and I am surprised. And pleased.

Skottie, Monday, 14 April 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Really? There's no specific support for this, though it was once roughly planned. Are you just typing the address into your WAP browser, or are you using an HTML convetor like Google's? Can you view other sites with it?

Graham (graham), Monday, 14 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

With the site being so text-based, it's not surprising that it's compatible. I've actually been surfing ILX regularly from a Blackberry or a Palm Tungsten. It actually works reasonably well with the Tungsten, except for the fact that I can't log in properly so it's impossible to see only the last, say, 50 posts on a thread, which means the longer threads get truncated. Oh well.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 14 April 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

I actually typed in www.google.com and then when that miraculously worked, I searched for "ILX new answers". The link showed up and I clicked it and it loaded just fine. It's obviously split into multiple pages, but loads quickly and works well. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary with the phone (a Siemens), because I don't know how to do anything out of the ordinary with it. I've visited others sites with it, but so far only ones that I knew were WAP enabled like Washingtonpost.com and theonion.com. It seems to ignore photo posts--obviously they wouldn't show up, but it's cool that it doesn't try to load them. It was quite cool.

Skottie, Monday, 14 April 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Then it's going through Google's HTML to WAP convertor, so it's nothing special about our site. I used to regularly use a Psion organiser + mobile phone to browse - it works pretty well, and you can login kinda, and post.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

The concept of "WAP" and "enable" being used together baffles me.

We're trying to determine again which thread this was on. This sounds like something the moderators need to discuss for future reference should something similar arise, since we'll need that info.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

It was on the THINGS TO BE SAID IN ALL CAPS thread. *shrugs* it was deleted, don't worry about it.

Some people foolishly believe that a few trolls and psychopaths don't affect the board, but stuff like this points to the fact that it does.

Trolls are one thing. They're a fact of life. But when you read something that just makes you feel gross inside... that's altogether different. We gotta get rid of this shit not just for Ally's mental health (although that's the biggest thing), but for everyone's.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

The operators of this forum know what I object to and I'd ask them to respect it.

I also object to the post I recently made on ILE asking for feedback about a creative endeavour, the thread was hi-jacked by James Blount and I'd ask the moderators to delete most of the posts there as I was wanting serious and considerate feedback. I'd like to see evidence that Mr Blount is producing anything in his pitiful life.

If ILM/ ILE wants me to post serious threads then it should really think about the reaction to said attempts. Whenever I try (recent examples include White Stripes thread on ILM, my other thread on ILE) James hijacks it and acts like the inbred, redneck idiot he is. I have no problem with people voting Bush - it's up to them, but that doesn't mean I need to have their idiocy all over my own threads.

Calum, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

where did I say I voted for Bush?

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Calum like I said the mods shouldn't be deleting swans. However more reasonable requests, like keeping your full name out of posts, will probably get a better response.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

where did I say I voted for Bush?

Probably the same place where I pretended to be a womyn, which is most likely near the same place I advocated censorship, etc, etc.

I suppose thee only metaphor I can think of is this stand-up comic, who plays thee same club again & again & again, despite his act being med w/a response somewhere between indifference & open hostility. Under such circumSATANces, two options present themselves:

1/play at another club

2/modify yer act

But then if you repeatedly rip on the regulars at the club, in an obnoxious and personal manner far, far beyond what most people expect, then after a while people might feel a bit grudgey, like, and it might be a bit too late to modify yer act in any kind ov way that will work. (shrugs) It's a shame, yr obviously not actually stupid, but I find it hard to understand why you act the way you do. I just don't understand.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

I honestly respect that, but the point is that I feel I'm damned if I do anyway because my honest threads were hijacked as well...

Calum, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cal - I'll make a deal, I won't hijack your 'honest' threads if you don't start any more 'dishonest' thread - deal?

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

James,

I don't think many of my threads have been dis-honest.

To explain - I agree some strange ones have been posted and... well, I can see how they wound folks up - but recent threads such as the one about Emma Bunton and Nicky Wire on an airplane... I thought that might've been just a laugh rather than 'dishonest'. I mean, where do you/ I stop? - the Girls Aloud thread seemed fine to me whereas, yes I agree, a thread on Karen O's personal hygiene was inevitably going to make some folks think I was just being repugnant for the sake of it.

I guess it comes down to what you term 'dishonest'. The thread I once posted on Phil Collins the porn star never got any criticism, but the one on Emma Bunton's new video got loads. Yet which one was really more inappropriate for a music discussion forum?

Calum, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

for dishonest read 'the ones who wound people up'. Think to yourself - could this thread be interpreted as trolling? If the answer is probably yes don't do it. We all know you like titties - EVERYBODY likes titties, and I really think if it had only been one thread that was 'so and so's is/isn't shaggable' instead of EVERY thread (initially) there wouldn't be any kind of conflagration - look at kate's Julian Casablancas thread which was almost as much of a yay for masturbation-athon as your threads but didn't spark half the outrage because 1) kate has been here awhile (a long while) and so people knew she wasn't being a troll and 2) she didn't start five or six similar threads every day and then whine about political correctness when someone called her a bore. Follow the model of your disney thread or your screenplay thread. Avoid image posting threads. Selfcensor diligently at first if need be.

I don't see why everyone's so against getting rid of those swan pictures. One is pretty, several hundred are more than annoying. I, for one, find it very easy to skip over the stuff that Calum does, but it's more of a hassle to deal with the swans! I don't have any problem with you James B., but I think whatever it is you're trying to accomplish with the picture pollution couldn't be worth it. It's like you're covering your ears and shouting "LALALA" to not hear something that offends you, but in the process you're also shouting down all other conversation in the room.

Would a moderator mind removing this post I made on the American Sports thread which contains a really stupid and pointless racist joke? It was made in the spirit of "hey let's be politically incorrect!" the thread momentarily took on, but is actually quite mean and I think would reflect badly on ILX for any newbies who happened upon it. Also I apologize to anyone who was offended by it (though I guess there's a whole other thread for that).

Just curious... moderator type, could you please check if "Scott Kos" is really C*l*m?

I don't want to debate the issue any further. I find the thread creepy, but it's worrying me if this is either the work of C*l*m or the legacy of C*l*m.

ILX: Creepier every day!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

If it's just C*l*m trying to "rearrange our sensibilities" or whatever his excuse for his trolling is, then fair enough, whatever. What I'm worried about is that random new people will wander in, see the C*l*m threads, and think that *that* is what ILX is about, thus lowering the tone of the entire board and making it totally creepy and hostile towards women. One troll is easy enough to ignore, but a whole influx of new people who don't understand what it's all about is rather more worrying.

That was the one, Felicity, thank you. Girlfriend (who is Korean) got mad over it, so she at least will be happy it's gone. I also agree that this place has had a stronger anti-social creep element recently and I didn't want to contribute to that. Plus leaving the beaneaters comment just makes me sound happy-stoner rather than Manson-stoner :)

chester (synkro), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Was it necessary to delete the "Nikki Taylor Girl thread" after the poster in question had actually apologized? A thread containing the phrases "banal intercourse" and "masturbating geek" cannot be all bad.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Upthread I asked for one of the threads to be deleted because the asshat had originally posted not one but *two* identical threads on this topic.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

- Offensive threads. At their discretion, moderators can delete entire threads which are likely to cause offence. It happens very rarely - threads which are racially or sexually abusive are the most likely. Even then moderators might not delete the thread, if an offensive question seems likely to provoke debate. If you find a thread offensive, please say on the thread or email a moderator about it.

I think that posting random rape fantasies to a public forum is pretty much the dictionary definition of sexually offensive. I didn't ask for the thread to be deleted, but I would defend the action as being within the realm of moderation.

general drunken despondency regarding people and the world, if I recall correctly (5:27am? WHY?!?!) I guess it still stands. If James wants the thread deleted then I think that pretty much covers it. gareth linked to a thread about shirts whose collars are a different color, but the link pointed to the greenspun server so i found the right thread on OUR server and changed it.

my new posts are added to the specter of my identity (without a clickable profile and web presence). Last time I checked the ghost was at:

and my troo profile was at:
104 Sébastien Chikara 115 (14) sebastien@hedonist-materialism.com a hedonist materialism theory website

I erased my cookies, logout, login, changed my pw, checked if a cookie was not stored on my laptop or something and it didn't fixed it. The ghastly one is still rising. Statcock aside it is a problem to me because I want people to be able to click on my profile since it's part of some of my "conceptual" posts (exchange system, "pathos of distance" rules of politeness, etc).

Can someone fix this/ explain me what is happening?

Hi fellow moderators - I am having trouble giving admin privileges to a couple of my fellow ILFers - I keep getting an error message after I enter their names. What's wrong? If information is sensitive, could someone possibly email me off-list? I would really appreciate it. Thanks again.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nordicskillz, I think the only ppl who can *hand on* admin privileges remain me, Tom, Alan, Andrew and Graham. Email some of the names/emails of who your designated co-mderators at ILF are and we'll do it for you.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ed, done. This is my first mod action. Hope it's ok.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a question. As this thread is linked at the bottom of every page (as "Problem?") would it be a good idea to move this thread on to another board, perhaps one dedicated to moderating? that way it doesn't keep popping up on new answers so much. just a thought.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I thought the idea was that it did keep popping up in new answers so mods would see it and act on it.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, yr right.

mods could e-mail subscribe to it?

Just thinking out loud really. all this new found power is going to my head.

p.s. i've written the "don't index this thread' code -- is it actually wanted?

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sounds like a good idea but as with all mod powers, there should be guidelines as to when it ought to be used. It should be used sparingly. How will new and interested people find us if not through google.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

interested people are boring.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, this needs to be mods-only or everything will get removed from Google. I think we need to make it harder for nazis to find us, for instance, but I'm not sure how much we have to worry about porn stuff.

I prefer this to be prominent in New Answers. It keeps the discussion and decisions public and open, it makes us more accountable, and email alerts would only alert me at home, not when I log in at work. I don't want ILE emails going to my work address, as it would prove too distracting, and ILE would take over my entire life rather than only my home time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

mods should now be able to "googleguard" threads on the admin message page. it's next to the "Un/Lock Thread" button.

(This is a good sign that I am getting to grips with the code, but I'm still working on commenting it all. I got majorly sidetracked understanding the trackback bits and pieces)

I'm deleting them as well, unless someone has already responded. There are loads.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Okay, I've deleted a few dozen, left a couple where someone had replied. We may have got through the nuisance now - none for a few minutes at least. The IP was 200.76.229.149, in case that is ever useful info. I tried a google for the organisation's name, with a thought of emailing them to tell them to stop, or to start a proper thread, but nothing.

hstencil, Monday, 5 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

We could put tags on them that restrain the dimensions but they'd still use up the same bandwidth because they'd be the same size. Best to resize them at your end if you wanted them smaller in both regards. Also, we could turn them into links instead.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 5 May 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey moderators! And Alan! I've noticed a couple of times when going to administer a post, especially long ones, that when I try to "save" the changes nothing at all happens. I click the "submit" button and it just sits there and does fuck all. No hourglass to even indicate that IE is doing anything about it. No nothing. Any ideas what's happening here? And is there any way around this? (I've tried reloading the page again, logging off and then on, doing it from another machine, etc.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've not hit this at all, Sean.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is what I hit when attempting to Googleproof Calum's name at the end of some of Blount's swans. I didn't look at the HTML code, but I would guess that the problem is that the admin page isn't doing a POST where it needs to.

I also added the ILF admins asked for.

If you send me e-mail usign ILX's webmail link (registered users only) it comes to my private address here at work -- if you use the yahoo one, I don't check that so much. I'll check it more often now though (naughty me).

i've fixed the editadmin problem. sorry about that -- don't know when that sneaked in.

Is that the one I was mentioning, Alan? Because I just tried to edit the same message I had in mind when I made the observation above:
http://www.ilxor.com/adminmsg.php?msgid=3524154
and it gave me the same problem. Maybe I'll try logging out and then back in to see if that fixes anything at this end.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nope, no dice. It just sits there, witless, after clicking the "submit" button on the admin msg page.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, sorry, that was a correction to the code/page to give admin priveleges out.

Editing that post worked fine for me here (I added some text, then removed it) -- I can't see what the problem might be. Other mods having problems? (If so I'd better make myself a regular admin login to check)

I could edit the post for you, but I'd rather fix the problem of course

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Let me download another type of browser to see if it's strictly an IE issue for me. I know that it's probably nothing to do with the message ITSELF, because I tried editing another message once upon an age to fix up some table-tag wonkiness, and got the same problem; Noodles was able to log on and zap the bugs without problem (I think).

I've always wanted the ability to read threads in a "paged" mode, so that very long threads can be read (e.g.) 50 at a time, with links to each page of 50, and a "Next" and "Prev". Anyone else?

It just occurred to me that this might also aid the ever lengthening threads like this one and the pic of yourself/what you listening to style threads.

I should juse get on with commenting and tidying before I start messing around, huh?

Help! I just accidentally killed my 12-step anonymity on the "quitting heroin, how" thread: I used an anonymous name and email (as below) but forgot to log out, so my real log-in name is there grinning at everyone. Could you kill the log-in name and keep the post? Or if that's not possible, kill it all. And you'll definitely need to kill the post that I followed it up with, where I go "Damn, I just killed my anonymity." In any event, anonymity here is required, not so much for my protection but to protect the 12-step group from people like me being perceived as spokesmen for it in the public eye.

(I emailed Jess and Tracer, but if someone else sees this first, please take care of it.)

Lots of thanks.

I dunno if this is really a moderator-type issue / request, but since folks new to the boards are (I presume) not going to scroll down to the SEARCH function to see if their thread idea has already been explored, perhaps it might be good to move the SEARCH link to the top of the page (w/ perhaps a li'l note to tell new folks to search before posting a thread)? Or simply have search links on the top & bottom?

Just a thought. That is all. Carry on.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 15 May 2003 04:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm not sure if this is because of the thread I just started (the bizarre books one) but I did do a search for similar threads afore I posted - its reasonably clear where the search function is, FWIW :)

You might want to change the way things are moderated. Im not sure identifing cookies are the best route to go. Specially if a moderator uses other people computers.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's more than just a cookie. you have to have a valid username/password combo, and that user name has to have admin rights and even then admins need to re-enter their passwords when they start mod'ing. Unless you know of a loophole??

Moderator, PLEASE REMOVE other posters' guesses at the identity of Person X on this thread: Let's talk about houseguests.

kate, Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bump, as I see it hasn't been done yet.

kate, Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, you could start with giving a good reason why a non-abusive post by someone else should be altered at your request.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Because it is invasive and I wish for the parties involved to remain anonymous. If the person so name-checked were not a poster on ILX, it would be done under those circumstances.

kate, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

How much more invasive than discussing their sleeping habits in public? If you wanted it anonymous, you should have started an anonymous thread.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

You are a cunt.

kate, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

The reason that I did not give their names is, as usual, because I wanted people's *honest* thoughts on the matter, not coloured by their impressions and prejudices about the people in question. I have no desire to incur the wrath of the Momus fanclub for asking how much advance warning should be given by impending houseguests.

Yeah, on second thought, maybe I SHOULD have started the thread anonymously, but I guess I gave other ILE posters too much credit to be able to discuss things without letting them turn into a childish guessing game.

And you're still a cunt.

kate, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, fair cop.

A partial defense is that when I posted the name again, I didn't realise that the earlier instances had been sanitised. So now I invite a mod to sanitise the name again form my post.

Though yeah, fair cop.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I posted this on that thread, but I think it should go here too:

I really think that if someone's going to modify somebody else's post, it's a good idea to let them know that. I've had a couple posts myseriously disappear over the past few days with no explanation whatsoever, and I think that's totally creepy and out-of-line (plus if I did something wrong I'd like to know so I won't do it again).

hstencil, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Andrew Farrell is worse than Hitler.

Since I was moderated can I ask who moderated me and why. You may do this in a personal e-mail if you do not wish to have this discussion on this board.

It doesn't bother me either way, but it would be useful for future reference to know whether unsubstantiated speculation on the identity of people who are being talked about in a pointedly specifically generalised manner should be barred. Cos as was also said on that thread, a number of people were thinking the same as me and hence the anonymity was neither here nor there.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is ridiculous.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Kate, in all fairness, I don't see what else you expected to happen there? Why bother talking about it at all, I don't think this is really a fair request, unless the poster "REVEALED!" decides to ask for it to be deleted. I mean, don't you think the people in question would've figured it out anyway if they read it?

But also I'm not a mod and I really don't care and I didn't read the thread, so take with a grain of salt!

hstencil, I know the reason why one of your posts was deleted. OOOOOO OOOOO OOOOO (that's supposed to be creepy music), I'll email you the explanation of one.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

If someone is talking about "Person X" rather than using your name, you can probably assume that they are using a pseudonym FOR A REASON. If I wanted to discuss a person in particular, I would use their name. I wanted to discuss a situation in the abstract, rather than the personal specifics.

Didn't we have this discussion earlier when talking about "JonBennet Rammstein" and other regulars posting anonymously who forgot to log out?

If someone wishes to protect the identity of a person they are discussing, other people should know enough to follow suit, even if they've "already guessed" - respect the poster's wishes and keep it to yourself.

kate, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

but not as bad as the cunt farrell;)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

sorry, kate. Even though I didn't mention the person by name, I think I contributed to this. I apologize, I can totally understand where you're coming from.

hstencil, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Like I said, Ally, my reason for asking was because I wanted people to discuss the issue IN THE ABSTRACT.

There is a difference between asking "how do you handle a situation between you, your housemate and a third party?" and starting a thread going "MOMUS HAS MOVED ONTO MY COUCH AND WILL NOT LEEEEEAAAAVE!!!" Some people on this board would cream themselves at the thought of having Momus on their couch all the time, some people would deliberately bar the windows and doors at his very approach. I didn't want another goddamn Momus thread, I wanted a discussion of what was considered acceptible behaviour with regards to housemates and houseguests. End of story.

I'm sorry I started the thread. I'm sorry that I asked to have people's names removed. I'm beginning to be sorry that I ever went on this board this morning in the first place.

kate, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Even if people hadn't named names, anyone reading it would still know who the people involved are, if that's going to be in their minds and affect the advice they give then there's not much you can do about it. You can't moderate what people are thinking. I hope. I don't think it's fair to accuse people who do this of being immature.)

Emma, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can someone please delete all of Kate's posts ever? They annoy me, and my annoyance could lead to anger, and my anger could lead to offending perfectly innocent third parties who want nothing to do with this Interweb nonsense. And some of these third parties are famous, and some of you creeps are just dying to get into their business.

Thanks in advance!

I didn't really think that carefully before accepting Kate's request, I guess. Though I did/do think that the request is a bit odd, seeing as most people on ILE know that suzy and kate (and ed?) live together anyway. It wasn't like Pete had any insider knowledge. 1/ This is what happens when I take a day off from posting

2/ I think Kate’s request was reasonable, and I most likely would have carried out said request had I been online @ thee time. I think it’s a simple matter of good manners and common something-or-other, if someone posts in thee abstrackt in such a manner, to respect that, like do as you would be done by or something. You can always go on abt it on AIM if you want to. Reading this, please bear in mind that I am a horrible prissy old fuck who complains about children swearing loudly on publick transport, and I am in fact mary whitehouse/h1tl3r who only likes it in thee “missionary position” w/thee lights out (© C*l*m R.W. 2003)

3/ I would cream myself if m*m*s were to sleep on my sofa.

4/ k8 rulz fuk all yuo h@t@z

4a/ However, if kate’s (or anyone else’s) threads annoy you, do not read them. I have recently taken to ignoring threads by annoying poster, and it makes me happier, and also it makes ilx into a more pleasurable experience, or something..

5/ In all seriousness (and I think mark s offered this as well) if you want to post anonymously in a similar manner, and you don’t want this kind of thing, email your question to me, “moderator pashmina”, and I will post it for you, devoid ov any identifying data. Downsides=
a/you will have to trust me not to blab or be a mentalist or fukc up. (I won’t, but obv I would say that, wouldn’t I? I won’t though, yea verily not even on AIM)
b/I generally tend to be online only between 7pm and 2am GMT, so I am rub if you want a quick answer (unless you think of a q between thee hours noted above)
c/ I will not forward snarky personal attax, or creepy stalky stuff on ilx posters. If you send me creepy stalky stuff, I will kill-file you.
d/ do not use terms “viagra” “penis” “teen” “hgh” “own boss” “lose weight” in yr mail title or my phancy new message rule will backhand it into thee wastebasket

Obv, you may not wish to take advantage of this offer, and that’s ok, b/c I quite understand why you might not wish to send sensitive info to some div who you have never met before, but it’s there if you want it.

I am also asking to please have this IP address blocked from ILE, because I am incapable of staying away of my own willpower, and I REALLY need to leave. I am totally serious about this.

kate, Friday, 16 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Since the other thread has now been locked I'll post my reply to Chris here).

I disagree (he says in his best Tom Paulin way) - whilst Big Brovaz have obviously been infuence by the canvalesque production of Outkast, a cursory look at their lyrical content shows a lot more in common with pop rappers of the early nineties and the general obsession of the bling garage culture. Songs are either about asserting their identity (Nu Flow / OK) or status (My Favourite Things). That said they do compare favourably to Outkast affiliates when they too rap on such mundane matters - suchg as Killer Mike's A.D.I.D.A.S.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 May 2003 09:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks. Feel free to start another thread comparing our domestic situation to Big Brother, Big Brovaz, Outkast or anyone else you fancy.

What happened to those good old days?
When hip-hop, was so much fun
Ohh, house parties in the summer y'all
And no one, came through with a gun
It was all about the music y'all
It helped.. to relieve some stress
Ohh, we was under one groove y'all
So much love between North and West

Go back in the day
British Knights and gold chains
Do the prep and cabbage patch
And wear your laces all fat
Back in the dayyyyyyyy, hey hey
Hip-Hop has chaaaanged

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are you asking me? Two people living in the house that ended up being discussed (not too surprisingly, housemate who started the thread) were hurt and wanted it closed. The SARS thread was closed for less reason. I'll reopen it if you like. I didn't think it was adding much to anyone's day.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

So, Andrew, what part of "closing thread cos PERSON BEING DISCUSSED NEGATIVELY" doesn't apply to what I said was acceptable? Ed asking: acceptable to me. Kate fucking up and then crying: not.

I'm sorry I got involved in this discussion, actually--I just don't think it's particularly right that sometimes people come up with jackass requests about how they fucked up and get told to piss off. Sometimes, people come up with jackass requests about how they fucked up and people jump. It's not like it's a consistent "This person is favored" thing, it's like it depends entirely on who is reading at the time. Which seems like a shit way to do things--get on the same fucking page, yo.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alot of people agree I'd imagine, perhaps the old days of no moderation were better.

Anyway, now regarding this me-as-Keanu nonsense...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

as ally has several times pointed out, this is not a form of parliament, it's run by by ordinary humans who have to make snap judgements in real time about situations which are evolving when they have other things on their mind...

of course it depends on who's reading at the time, how the hell wd it not? the idea that some abstractly perfect rule can be formulated to deal with any possible situation that ever arises is insane — the discussion here has arisen bcz of different interps of a general rule of thumb abt what constitutes invasive personal information

(if not insane: go away and formulate the rule for us pls, so that everyone can interpret it perfectly conformistically in all situations forever)

kate's original request seemed reasonable to dastoor and me at the time: proof our snap judgments were in fact correct — ed's subsequent request

yes of course this depends on non-general knowledge abt the various posters involved (ie i know and am very good friends with all THREE of the flatmates involved and know that in the past ed has requested that similar close-to-the-bone information be deleted)

yes of course the situation here relates to the specifics of particular posters: that's what "personal" means...

yes of course if a poster i knew much less well made a similar request about someone's name being flung around by another poster in ref. similar situation i might have taken longer to respond, not being familiar with the personal blah blah

mark s (mark s), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Right! So I'm off to start a thread about how there just isn't enough passion in Ally and I's relationship anymore. What do you do in that situation? I don't mean to get specific. I just want to open up general discussion.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

My take on it is that the initial issue which was negatively talking about another poster was surely the initial Poster X / Poster Y / Flatmate post (about thirty down), as this had taken the initial relatively general issue and specified it to an actual incident which was not anonymous to anyone involved (or to most people who know all the other freely proferred info about said peoples lives upon the board). My admittedly pointlessly salacious post was of course a vain glorious attempt to say look at me, aren't I clever. Kate's initial denial was adequate to put me off. The thread still exists, albeit in a way that no-one can now post to it. Whilst very few people have blamed me for the situation I obviously do feel responsible, moreso for Andrew Farrell's new found cuntdom, and feel that perhaps we have all learned something here today.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm really more than happy to reopen the thing! It's just Kate's/Ed's/Suzy's interests seem paramount, it's their house. I thought you were clever before this, Pete.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

in what sense "new found"? < / stirring it >

i didn't actually think pete's initial post was out of order either in itself, i just think that the perfectly acceptable (if risky) discussion started had — essentially bcz of difft personal interps of the q. of invasivity — waddled itself across a line where [very mild] backtracking moderation was appropriate (not actually much more severe than writing h0rnby instead of hornby)

As I think one or two people on this board are aware, visiting a link on this thread: Song Poems: RFI turned out to be a disaster for my computer, which was imediately infected by a Backdoor.Apdoor.bIŽm trojan horse (jfhwlsg.exe) and a series of glossalalia trogan proxies (bdyubdh.exe, joaspoi.exe, kmavwic.exe, krvwfgc.exe, lqsgzhl.exe, pwprvrc.exe, rkddqcm.exe, zdcaedn.exe, and zhbxgrn.exe). The immediate effect was inclement irksome pop-up's and other weird things, which lead to me to suspect the content of my computer was being accessed. It took weeks of inevistigation to locate and eventually delete the offending files (and there's still a startup programme hidden on my computer (impotant now, though, I hope)). According to Boclean, who gave me substantial help: 'It's now possible for a "rogue" website to actually embed trojans, worms and/or viruses directly into a web page. In the past, pages that offer seemingly attractive downloads which contain such malware required you to click to start any download to your computer. BUT Now it's become automatic, using features in the Windows operating system known as scripting. These scripts can load programs without you knowing, and then they run immediately. All you have to do is visit the site, without doing anything besides viewing the page'.

The American Song Archives is one such rogue site, so I propose the post where it is linked to should be deleted to save an unsuspecting user of this board time, expense, anxiety in the future. Can you let me know if and when the post is deleted, 'cos I daren't even visit the thread to check (I know this is silly, but if you'd been through what I have!).

For the record, and to illustarte the sheer pernicuousness of that particular trojan, this is the response I got from BoClean, after sending them a copy of the file and the startup log:

'TRULY nasty indeed. The VIRUS which starts the proxy is that jfhwlsg.exe file in question and it's a cutie. What it's DOING is hiding inside Norton's code space AND inside the EXPLORER.EXE program as well. Fortunately, you can stop this nonsense but it takes a little trick.

First step, OPEN an MS-DOS (console) session. LEAVE IT OPEN ...

Now bring up the task manager and STOP EXPLORER.EXE ...

The traybar will vanish (this is why you have the MSDOS session open) ...
this is what you WANT to happen here.

Now go to the MSDOS window, type in EXPLORER and hit return.

This will bring BACK the traybar. Some icons may be missing, but the
programs that were running there will STILL be running, Microsoft doesn't
do a very good "restart" notify and that works in our favor here.

You SHOULD be able to go and delete that file now. Reboot, then clear out
the rest of the trash and unless it's being fed from another program
somewhere (should have been detected by AV) then it should be gone for good
now'.

This worked - the virus left the building (I hope so and verily).

"Everyone's Internet" is an ISP that has a lot of addreses in the 64.246.x.x range.

As I think one or two people on this board are aware, visiting a link on this thread: Song Poems: RFI turned out to be a disaster for my computer, which was imediately infected by a Backdoor.Apdoor.bIŽm trojan horse (jfhwlsg.exe) and a series of glossalalia trogan proxies
(snip)
The American Song Archives is one such rogue site

Forwarding Burden, I and many of my friends have been to the ASPMA site at least a hundred times, including that page, and have _never_ had a problem. I took a look at the source code for the page, too, and don't see anything that could be an exploit.

Are you sure the timing wasn't just a coincidence? That site is a very, very popular one, and I'm on a couple mailing lists that discuss song-poems -- I'm positive that someone would've said something by now were there a problem, and Phil Milstein is a "known figure" in the outsider music community: I'd be very surprised if he's planting trojans on websites. (Have you tried emailing him? It's possible that his site was hacked.)

Phil (phil), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Looks to be about 10 pictures from those two sites on ILM, 3 on ILE at least including one of each to this thread.

If at all possible we should add an if or switch statement to the 'ihttp to IMG SRC' routine to convert those to a picture of Ma$e or something.
But it does look as if the attack has ended at the moment, I just cracked a cold one to entertain myself with too, ohwell.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you have a browser that can apply a .css file to pages viewed, (Mozilla and safari can do this), create a text file called something like imageblock.css

add these lines to the file

A:link[HREF*="redcoat.net"] IMG { display: none ! important } A:link[HREF*="goatse.cx"] IMG { display: none ! important }
IFRAME[SRC*="redcoat.net"]  { display: none ! important }
IFRAME[SRC*="goatse.cx"]  { display: none ! important }

save the file and select in s the style sheet to be used by your browser. In Safari open the preferences and select the advanced tab. No more tubgirl.

You can also use this to block banner ads and the like.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

sorry that should be

A:link[HREF*="redcoat.net"] IMG { display: none ! important }

A:link[HREF*="goatse.cx"] IMG { display: none ! important }

IFRAME[SRC*="redcoat.net"]  { display: none ! important }

IFRAME[SRC*="goatse.cx"]  { display: none ! important }

It occurs to be that ilx could use css in this way to block undesirable content.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I doubt my browser is new enough, seeing as it really, really doesn't like css sites but that sounds like an even better soln for those with such ability.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Are you sure the timing wasn't just a coincidence?' Very sure - I actually witnessed something download, far faster than I could react, although I couldn't at first find where in my system where they'd nestled. I managed to loacte each of the offending files (ten) - all created on the date I visited the site - over the next few days.

'Phil Milstein is a "known figure" in the outsider music community: I'd be very surprised if he's planting trojans on websites'. As opposed to a "known figure" in Motown -- is outsider music going all Motown? I too would be surprised.

Hello all. I was bored and fiddling with the database to see what changes Alan made. He changed the database command that generates the New Answers page so it took 10 times longer to compute, which explains why not just that page but the whole site has been sluggish since I quit. I've restored the page to how it was. I'm sorry the New Answers page keeps being fiddled with.

I apologise for letting him near the server. Is there anyone here who has a clue what they're doing re:SQL that can take over?

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am sad to write this, but if we're going public.

In response to worries about slower response times I did indeed try changing the main newanswers query -- I experimented back and forth between my new code and graham's, with no obvious difference I could detect. I was worried about the slow down -- it predated my changes and i don't know where it came from. Graham noticed a difference between his and my code and here he is telling me about it.

I will not access the server ever again. Graham do not ever write to my personal e-mail address again.

I cannot work co-operatively on a project like this with someone who makes it unpleasant to work on. Does anyone else want to try working with graham?

Alan (Alan), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

i. graham we would prefer you dealt with these issues like a grown-up please
ii. the person currently giving up the time to be the techie-on-call has the absolute right to make changes s/he sees fit
iii. you ASKED to be stood down, alan offered to take over, and has done so/no one here has any problems with the way he does it, perhaps in part because it doesn't come with constant attention-seeking tantrums
iv. you have a tremendous capacity to convert ppl you owe a debt of gratitude into enemies (i'm not going to list them on-line, we've talked about it often enough via email or on AIM)
v. when i blew up at you that last time, publicly, it was because you were asking basically "why is it that no one is ever nice to ME here the way they are to [whoever] when [whoever] has often behaved as hatefully as i have?" => the answer to this (which i was too angry to want to state at that time, in case i stated it in an unforgiveable way) is that [whoever] makes a noticeable effort to be nice to other ppl on-line, even ppl s/he has no pester-interest in or much liking for... in other words [whoever] displays a balance of nice and unpleasant qualities... for some reason you pretty much enitrely dropped the "effort to be nice" thing, i think on a sort of "i refuse to be nice to anyone until ppl are routinely nice to me" basis
vi. this basis will only bring you grief, believe me

ok that was a cross-post with alan: i'm not rewriting, it's not worth it

Some history:
1. I seriously need to quit ILE.
2. I spend more time than I can afford making changes and tidying things up.
3. Alan offers to take over.
4. I accept his offer. I ask him to check with me before making major changes. I tell him the code is a bit messy and he should check with me before . I also ask him to keep a record of what changes are made.
5. I hear nothing from Alan, so assume he must know exactly what he's doing. I notice him changing things without any visible record of what is being done.
6. I email him about this. He sends me back a list of changes.
7. Today I notice changes he's made are what's slowing down the system. I correct them.

The point is that he's going on about being unable to work with me when he's never even tried to.

I just needed someone to give the password to so I could go off and try to get on with my life. Well that worked well, didn't it? And once again I'm being persecuted by the same horrible cliques. Still being expected to accept that my emails will never be replied to (Shall I name names? No, better not). Still being expected to accept levels of heartbreak normal human. Being kicked in the teeth for trying to do something to make me happy, or daring to like other people. What the fuck do you people want from me?

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

For starters I want you to stop smearing my friend.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

what might actually work, graham, is if you apologised for your hateful behaviour, rather throwing out passive-aggressive sulks related to your strings-attached help (well, i don't know whether it would work for alan — that's for him to decide — but it might go down a tiny bit better with everyone else reading)

anyway, i guess you've got what you wanted: we now get to ask you day and night, once again, to consider and enact any and all changes we think for to request, in return for exactly the same thankless take-the-tech-support-for-granted that pissed you off so much last time

one of the reasons ppl don't go out of their way to be nice to you is possibly that when they do they know from a history of yr behaviour that it will simply be thrown viciously in their face in a few days/weeks/months time (what youi just did to alan being a picture-perfect example): after the dust is settled, they know you will busily start portraying whoever made an effort to be nice/be helpful as the villain... so why even bother starting?

this bad loop (kindness => bad feedback => end of kindness => worse feedback) can be broken, but not by anyone other than yourself...

(cross-post again)

in answer to your question: we would like you to try to make an effort to learn to treat other people on the planet as if they mattered in themselves, not just as part of your plans for them

on our world — that of the regular users of the board — giving alan the password worked fine

FWIW I had noticed New Answers being quite slow lately and it seems to be quicker right now, but then these things come and go so I don't really know about any firm conclusions.

I was under the impression that Graham had passed on control to Alan for the good of the board and his sanity, without retaining 'executive control'. I'm not saying that is the case, just that that's the impression I had got, and maybe others had too.

[cross post]

Graham? Hello. I am assuming this is some dig at me not replying to an email. Since the 'fuck you' thing ages ago I'm pretty sure I haven't had one from you anyway.

Is the ILX server like the ring?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 June 2003 11:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

many ilx ppl have tried, graham, in many different ways, but since the reward for this is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS being kicked in the teeth by you shortly afterwards, ppl are decreasingly likely to try

for example the way you are behaving today is as a matter of fact contemptibly (but also unfortunately typically) ungrateful response TO ME for all the time i have given you over the last year and more: and even if i choose to take it on the chin — it's a nice day, i'm (sort of still) in a good mood, blah blah — plenty of people reading will immediately be marking you down for it

ie the question "why should your goodwill matter" translates in the real world as "i don't mind if no one is ever nice to me again": but you *do* care!!

you make a habit of punishing people IN ADVANCE for the (sometimes imagined) sins of those who went before: and that's wqhat you;re doing here, again

i think a new MODERATOR SHOUT thread wd be a good idea anyway: this one was already getting unwieldy

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 June 2003 11:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am also sorry that the many months (ie up to about January) that everyone on-board spent being (largely) unfailingly nice and supportive and full of gratitude to Graham wasn't ENOUGH for him. What a betrayal.

Yes, it's because we don't appreciate you. You are wasted on us. Nothing to do with the endless fucking tantrums and childish hissy fits and generally making the people who have done the most for you feel like shit. Nothing at all.

Sorry to jump on the band wagon & get involved in this thread, but Graham that is no way to speak to people & I personally find it quite offensive. If you had a problem with what Alan had done then speak to him direct, don't play it out on here for all to see. It is a really spiteful thing to do. I am sure you have your reasons & feeling undervalued may be one of them, but as I said, this is not the way to go about making people grateful for your efforts.

Graham in all the time I have actually been the obvious living counterexample to your claim, you have never made a sustained attempt — apart from occasional one-sentence thanks — to actually notice me "as a person", or "care about my feelings" or whatever. You keep saying the trade is unfair: but I don't actually think there's any evidence (yet) that you would trade fairly if someone started it off. Graham, one particularly irksome thing you've done before and again today is hang the spectre of your own suicide over some relatively trivial to-do about which some ILXor has reasonably (or even unreasonably) complained, like the only alternative to our total acquiesence to your antics is your jumping from the nearest bridge. Speaking as someone who has seen several friends successfully kill themselves, this kind of talk is really grotesque and unfair.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

What I'd like you to do, Graham:

Step one: Stop saying "sorry" when you totally don't mean it. It's more passive aggression, and it's intensely dislikeable (= many points on the "Reasons Not To Cuddle Graham" charts of literally dozens of readers).
Step two: Say sorry, sincerely, to Alan. You owe him a massive, absolute apology, on AND off-board. (Failure to do this = many more points on the "Reasons Not To Cuddle Graham" charts.)

I realise in the mood you're in this afternoon that one and two may not be simultaneously achievable. Try and ensure this mood passes swiftly.

Step three: one really obvious way of showing reciprocal friendship towards me would be behaving in a minimally civil manner towards people that I like.

I think I'll keep the other steps for personal email.

I think all SQL decisions should be made by majority vote. There are enough geeks round here.

More seriously, without going into the history, it's very nasty to insult someone for a coding "mistake". It's just a little query rewrite and there are ways of being diplomatic about these things.

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fair enough, Graham.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Step two: Say sorry, sincerely, to Alan.
Thanks Mark, butI don't want this. An apology would only make me feel worse - I could have tried harder to make it work. We've had e-mails back and forth over the last 2 months. I've thanked graham for helping me, I've apologised for doing things incorrectly. I've also, unfortunately, neglected to tell Graham when he's being unreasonably unpleasant, and today was just the last straw - I was tired of walking on egg shells. Making it public has made it worse -- i'd rather we hadn't.

Graham, I'm sorry this has happened. You were less than civil with me and I just wasn't in the mood for it today. I'm not changing my mind though. Let's just let it lie.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

(And why are you all so keen to think the worst of me?)

There was no need to rewrite the query. If you understood how much work I put into making this all work, and how much stress it's caused me, how much hassle everyone put me through wehn stuff didn't work, you'd understand why having some buffoon coming in and changing things without any care for why I might have done things the way I did was so totally offensive to me.

Alan doesn't get an apology until I get one from everyone here that's hurt me.

You know when you grab a kettle and it burns you and that hurts. Well, this is a reaction to tell you not to do it again.

Alan doesn't get an apology until I get one from everyone here that's hurt me.

Good luck with that.

Another point on the reasons not to cuddle Graham chart. Don't you get it yet?

Greenspun's looking pretty good right about now.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

(that was addressed to Sean)

Uh, WTF?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

(And why are you all so keen to think the worst of me?)

This is a shot in the dark, but it may be because you seem to be clinically disturbed and exhibit enough antisocial tendencies to match the profile of the average fictionalized serial killer.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm also quite keen to think the worst of anyone who'd call Alan "some buffoon".

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey, I'm the only one on ILX at the moment who gets to call Sean mean things today!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

No no, everyone can take a crack at me, I just have no fucking clue what that was even about.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Nate gets a free pass due to the whole forehead-vulva thing, Noodles.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wow. Graham's impersonation of an 8-year-old is uncanny. I have an oversized Izod shirt he can wear to complete the effect.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sean, I think he meant me - it was in response to my post.

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

What do you think Mr. Goatfish?

http://www.fishtaxidermist.com/images/mutton.jpg
I think Graham needs to learn how to be more tactful.

No, that bit was great!

This is a shot in the dark, but it may be because you seem to be clinically disturbed

This is the nub of it. I don't think there's any point in trying to impress upon Graham anymore what is normal behaviour that doesn't alienate people. He just can't see it. Or in trying to give advice on how to live his life. He is not ready for it. I hesitate to say all this publically, Graham, but it may serve to discourage fruitless ILX stuff about you every rearing its head every so often, be it well-intentioned friendly advice or exasperated hostility. You need help from a professional. I think you have already sort of pursued this and been disappointed, and I know it is a maze and underfunded and everything else, but I don't think you cannot get what you need here and us all (inc. you) banging our heads against the wall here is not helping anything.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

No I get it Nick. It's just everyone else (ie RickyT) seems determined to go on treating me like a leper. So why not let him? It's fun for everyone, I think you'll agree.

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm not sure what you think you get Graham.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Perhaps you shouldn't spend so much time painstakingly painting on your leper's spots.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you are referring to my refusal to answer your AIM's it's because I don't think I can talk to you in a non-private medium right now without ranting.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

This and that, Nick.

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Non-private = non-public above. I need to go home.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham, you are once again behaving in appalling fashion. EVERY crime that you are accusing others of, you have committed to me. I've spent quite a lot of time and trouble talking to you, including times when you were desperately unhappy - and you have turned your back on me and walked away when someone younger and female and cute has walked in. I have sent you more than one friendly email, and received no replies at all. You have insulted me on the board here. I have taken all this because you are a troubled young man and I'd like to help, largely in gratitude for the huge contributions you have made for the running of this board. That's why I've bought you quite a few drinks at FAPs, and why I haven't moaned that you've never offered to buy me one. My best efforts don't mean that you should treat me as a friend or like me - you're perfectly free to think me an old tosser and want nothing to do with me - but if you treat people a hundred times worse than they treat you, your room for legitimate complaint is very small.

This row did not start from your being mistreated in any way. Alan tried out something he thought might work. He's a very clever and skilled man, and it did little if any harm as far as I could see, and there was certainly nothing wrong in his giving it a try - a lot of SQL performance issues can only really be settled by trying them out in real conditions. If there was really a slowdown in performance, why not just tell him so in an email and either of you could have switched back (or tried something new again, whatever). Why insult him publicly? The worst he did was make an entirely understandable mistake while trying to improve matters. You might be a better coder than Alan, I wouldn't know, but I have a job where I am currently basically in charge of and supervising a number of programmers and helping them write better code, including tuning their SQL and so on, and I would never treat any of these people the way you have behaved here. I'd expect real disciplinary trouble if any senior person behaved that way, and the fact that there is no such structure here doesn't make your actions any better.

However many times a day Graham is getting his ass kicked at school, it isn't enough.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 13 June 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham, please, the world does not owe you a living. In the past you have abused or ignored many many people who offered you help and friendship, why in the name of God should they now kow tow to you?

Fuck this, I'm taking it to e-mail. I'm too angry.

So I guess I should have known better than to open a thread called "tongue splitting: C/D" if I didn't want to see a huge pic of, well, a split tongue. Maybe I'm stupid and oversensitive, but maybe there should be a warning? Eek ick ack uck.

Okay, I've been thinking about this a lot and talking to some people, and I'd like to apologise to Alan for trying to help. And to Mark and Martin and Vicky and Anna and everyone else who's tried their best with me. I'm sorry.
