Uh, "professors" is spelled correctly. I'm not sure what you mean by "impersonal pronoun vs. grammatically challenged inanimate object." (The only pronoun I see is the "I" in "I've.")

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i cannot believe you are even trying to question our sense of humor.

everyone gets the joke but you.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want to argue that the sentence contains a misplaced modifier, you might have a case. (Is it the books that are grammatically challenged, or the professors?) But given the fact that the sentence is fairly short, I don't think it has the potential to be misread.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

All jocularity/sarcasm/irony aside, Jaymc, the level to which you are reading into things is highly amateur!st!c.

thorHmono (Thor), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

There's something mean-spirited about it, I gather, and when Amateurist writes a well-thought-out post with several five-dollar words, and then NOIZE DOODZ come in and poke him with a stick and ROFFLE, it strikes me as vaguely anti-intellectual. But maybe I'm just not getting it.

I have no fucking clue who you are, you're right.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem is either using an impersonal pronoun ("that") to describe people ("professors"), a grammatical no-no (should be "who"), or, if you read it differently, then the books are "grammatically challenged", which is kind of stretching things, anthropomorphization-wise. OK, that's not a huge error, but I wouldn't call him on it except the content of the post begs for it. I think you figured out the spelling mistake.

The other problem is that THIS IS AN INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD AND NOTHING MATTERS

I WILL BASH AMATEURIST NO MORE FOREVER

common_person (common_person), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no way that the "that" in that sentence is intended to refer to "professors" unless you either have no concept of grammar rules or are actively looking for a mistake. It's awkward but it isn't wrong.

Christ, you dudes are thick... I'm not yr pal Jon. I'm just a guy with an opinion. I'm sick of everything being dumbed down, and I'm not auditioning for a position anywhere. My point was simple - at least it seemed obvious to me. Our critics need to 86 the superlatives, which are inevitably married to tiresome, old-ass ideas in the first place. Far better to play the system against itself. Meltzer may be a relic of the 60s, but he certainly had a great set of ideas: disrupt, sabotage, dismantle. Pitchfork is utter rubbish. I long for the days when John Holstrom was doing "Punk" - they pitted Bay City Rollers against Sex Pistols! It never got much better than that... Too bad I was minus three years old at the time!

Simon knows about as much as you, Ned, in terms of evaluating a musician's or a group's hard-won ability to go about the business of their craft in an interesting way. Which is very little. That's why you will NEVER see the likes of you engage in any formal analysis of jazz or blues or improv or small band rock music or anything that involves musicianly craft and parsing out the techne of the form. Lego was the medium which bound all my other toys together into the same universe. Without the Galactic Rift Portal (and the smaller-scale PortaPortals Snake-Eyes and Cobra Commander developed in unison [during the brief Joe/Cobra pact, a union sparked to retaliate against the rising threat of the Gobots]), GI Joe would've made it out of the solar system (the Defiant was a noble effort, but was not made for extended deep space travel). Of course, they probably would've never encountered the Andromedan Demon Ponies (my sister's My Little Ponies + sharpee + me & my best friend being 8 years old and awake at 4 in the morning + need for new supervillain, as Will [afforementioned best friend], had managed to off Megatron [supreme chancellor of the Villain Empire] with a cigarette lighter earlier that day) either, and thus the human race would've never gone extinct. In retrospect it seems I often abused my power, possibly to the detriment of all toy civilization.

I came of age in a time ripe for innovation in the field of lego spacecraft engineering. The invention of the long clear ones, the x-wing style space windshield pieces, the big wheels (perfect for landing gear), etc. I really wish I had taken pictures of some of them, the GI Joe Intergalactic Transport, the Gobot Destroyer, Bumblebee's Time Travel Flyer, etc. I weep for the lost documentation of my childhood's greatest endeavors.

Voting for Bush as a means of attaining ecstasy

I don't like George W Bush. Rather, i don't like his policies. I think he's dangerous, incompetent and stupid. I do not support the war in any capacity. I don't know WHAT we'll do, as a nation, under four more years of George W Bush. Perish, probably.

That said, I think if I decided to vote in this coming election, which would be the first (and presumably last) time, I think pulling the lever and casting a vote that would help to ruin the day of people like Michael Moore, Kathleen Hanna, The Beastie Boys, Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin, Linda Ronstadt, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Madonna, and REM, would feel much like a hundred china white spikes in my vein. It'd surely bring me to an internal-organ warming state of supreme ecstasy, culminating in a cream colored climax the likes of which no mortal man has ever experienced.

One more fucking protest song, and, to paraphrase an Onion column from a few months back, my vote is going to cancel out yours.

And you just TRY to keep Mellencamp quiet.

In this way, I exploit democracy's greatest flaw. And STILL help to keep Heinz-Kerry from moving into The White House. Rightfuckingon.

one time my mom was bringing the cat to the vet in what would eventually become my first car. the cat pissed in the back seat.

then, much later, she gave the cat left over shark steaks, and the cat went into the back seat of the car to sleep, and puked kitty shark gutz all over the place.

so when this car was eventually mine, in the hot summers, it would smell like hot kitty shark piss gutz and no one wanted to get in my car.

You could actually listen to the free CDs you presumably get sent, find the gold in amongst the crap and tell people about it, rather than writing articles about how things aren't as good as they used to be, but that would take more effort

"Oasis" is a love story involving two young people abandoned by families unwilling to give them the love and attention they require. We in the audience may be equally unwilling to give them love and attention, and that's why the film works so powerfully. Its heroine is a woman rendered almost powerless by cerebral palsy. Its hero is a man so obnoxious and clueless that while he's in prison his family moves and leaves no forwarding address. They meet when he rapes her.

i dunno, "call and response" is pretty pervasive as a technique, not limited to spirituals. i wouldn't say that spirituals are the most proximate context here. rap music is the proximate context, if we need one. there are "call and response" patterns all over rap music.

The thread will not be deleted, but will remain locked.

As far as I'm concerned, Marcello Carlin outstayed his welcome here long ago. He has show little courtesy for anybody else on these boards in recent times, and should know better than to expect from us the type of generosity and patience which he himself has failed to deliver time and time again.

By bringing his problems to ILE, Marcello effectively opened himself to criticism. If he wasn't prepared to witness a discussion of his person, he shouldn't have gotten personal on the boards.

Putting "DO NOT READ IF YOU HATE ME" in your thread title does not magically refuse entry to those that hate you and want to condemn or provoke you. There is a standard of freedom of speech which I at least try to uphold here, and Tom was well within his rights to make the comments he did.

The fact that I personally agree with the points he raised have nothing to do with this policy decision.

I'm still amazed people think presenting a mix to someone where the recipient's name is in the title of all the tracks is a good idea.

I'm still amazed that people waste their time making mix tapes or mix CDs at all. Especially to impress chicks. Especially rock critics who do this, when they should be spending that "mix tape time" at the gym because they're geeky fatasses.

This is pretty hilarious:

Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2004 20:09:43 -0700 (PDT)
From: Rick Ele
Subject: O! SUCK ME, PROG! (S'morgue Anagrams)

A class action suit against Pitchfork Media claiming
misappropriation of the word "prog" has been filed on
behalf of all the music geeks that comprise the
SPOCKMORGUE roster, some of whom held picket signs
reading "SUE MOCK PROG" in today in front of Pfork
Hqtrs.

PITCHFORK MEDIA staff were not available for comment
because they were away at a HOT KID CAMPFIRE singing
contemporary emo hits and roasting marshmallows with
other smarmy likeminded western-shirt-wearin'
blowhards with very small pointy eyeglasses.

WEASEL WALTER never saw a SWEETER "L.A. LAW" episode
than the time Blair Underwood and Corbin Bernsen's
characters both unwittingly hooked up on a blind
double date. He recently suspended his exacting venue
standards and played a house show, but he remembered
why he generally doesn't book house shows for FLYING
LUTTENBACHERS where some perv spiked the punch with
rohypnol causing a FUNNY LITTLE GHB SCARE, and
everyone went home with a complete stranger.

George was only kidding when he said Weasle's drumming
was totally overrated, but it did succeed in spurring
Weasel into playing those drums like never before, and
thus the FLYING LUTTENBACHERS proceeded to BURY LITTLE
G. CHEN FANS with a paint-peeling performance. Then
Weasel re-enacted the famous Chicago "Disco
Demolition," but only this time it was a small pyramid
of K.I.T. 7-inches on smoldering on the floor.

No one wants to imagine their parents humping...and
strangely enough, CURSE OF THE BIRTHMARK had to cancel
a gig because of one members emotional distress; his
only comment was "I saw FATHER RUB MOTHER...I SICK!"
(I couldn't even attempt a tie-in for FIRM SORBET
HACKER HUT.)

DEATH SENTENCE PANDA played in Kris Kringle outfits
and xmas stocking-caps in their new extended swirly
psych lineup which includes a sitarist who was like a
totally DEEP ENCHANTED SANTA.

Now that Matt St. Germaine has announced a new pricing
scheme for his CDR and DVDR duplication services,
FREEDOM FROM has become synonymous with MR. DEMO
OFFER. Backwards subliminal messages in the Ova!/Happy
Mothers Day... CD have been used in music therapy at
state psychiatric institutions, and the governor of
Minnesota has recognized FREEDOM FROM RECORDS for
their efforts which have REFORMED FORMER OCD's.

The band T.I.T.S. made such a splash in their first
few months of playing out at Bay Area gigs, but they
began to get more ambitious to create an even bigger
buzz by staging their own break-up to cash in on their
contrived "ex-members-of" status, then "reuniting" as
EX-TITS ARE BIG and signing to TIGERBEAT SIX.

TIGERBEAT SIX figured they'd hafta strap on an EXTRA
BIG SET to renegotiate their contract with Numbers now
that they're like hella-big in Europe 'n' shit.

Don't even think about asking DEERHOOF to play a show
unless you get the event catered; they weren't the
least worried about beer tickets at their show...all
they cared about was "Is there FOOD HERE?" But that's
what happens when you play the D.A.M. House three
times in '97 and '98, where we routinely blow $300 on
groceries for every party.

Speaking of Davis, the COACHWHIPS were so amazed at
the population of cows on campus last week when they
played the Agrarian Effort Co-Ops. Before kicking off
the show, Dwyer asked, "What's that smell in the air?"
The answer: "AH, COW CHIPS." Some Aggies actually
reinforced the cowpoke Kings-fan stereotypes by having
a cow-chip tossing competition at the horseshoe pit.

NARNACK RECORDS moved their NYC offices to Coney
Island to make lunchbreaks more interesting. Now they
are situated on a totally RAD SNACK CORNER with a hot
dog cart, a falafel place, and a pizzeria all within
50 feet of their door. After adding Sonic Youth and
The Fall to their stable of recording artists, NARNACK
RECORDS sought to invoke a reunion of Krautrock greats
Can, but those DARN CAN ROCKERS have finally taken
well with retirement after many uninspired solo
projects.

Many of you know that GUITAR WOLF is famous for puking
on stage after seeing this happen last year at the
Hemlock Tavern. Well, after eating a bowl of grapes
and melons and taking several flaming shots at the
bar, some GUITAR WOLF fans were treated to the bizarre
and shocking image of FRUIT AGLOW coming outta the
singer's mouth at their last performance.

The new Sassy Magazine is reaching for its cool old
roots by rekindling it's cute boy band alert--remember
when they occasionally put the spotlight on indie
artists like Nation of Ulysses?--and in the next
issue, they are featuring BLACK DICE. Some girls
apparently are swooning, but a BI CACKLED when asked
for comment, but she would reconsider if they added a
female member to round out the band. (Yeah, some of
these are reaching....)

No one would've figured ANIMAL COLLECTIVE to be major
supporters of the Descendents or All, but they agreed
to headline a recent benefit concert to protest the
development of condos on the site of the band All's
practice space in Fort Collin, CO. Panda Bear was
even heard shouting to the crowd, "You can't EVICT ALL
ON MALICE!" Some longtime fans wondered if their
favorite band had sold out when they didn't show up
dressed like animals and one member wore a NICE EVIL
MALL COAT from Hot Topic.

LIGHTNING BOLT are really excited by Adrian Beltre
challenging former Phillies great Mike Schmidt for the
all-time record for most homeruns in a season by a
thirdbaseman, and they've also been chronicling Barry
Bonds' race to 700 career homers and Albert Pujols'
bid to become the fifth major leaguer to drive in 500
runs in his first four big league seasons. You can
read all about it online in Brian's NL HITTING BLOG.

UPSILON ACRUX waited too long to reserve a domain name
for their band website and had to pay off one
opportunistic "fan" who had reserved upsilonacrux.com,
.net, and .org. "URL PANIC SUX!" Paul said.

LE FLANGE DU MAL was mistakenly double-booked at an
all-aged club in Santa Rosa the same night Velvet Teen
was booked to play, but they championed on and
persisted through an unseemly MALL FAN DELUGE.

CRACK: WE ARE ROCK is shooting for the stars for their
next full-length release and aiming for mainstream
breakthrough success; they'll be quitting their
dayjobs as soon as possible and will be damned if they
can't make music and tour full-time rather than WORK
CACK CAREERS.

Taking cues from the parallel Hepatitis Youth tour
which followed them all over the U.S. last time, ERASE
ERRATA is scheduled to play A RARE EASTER performance
in front of a Catholic church next spring. Those
parishioners are gonna be so pissed! I can't wait to
catch the look on their faces on videotape!

If you weren't clued in by the occasional references
to Filipino-American culture on the first Rose For
Bohdan album, then maybe you'd be surprised to know
that the mogul behind DEATHBOMBARC is totally
committed to lowering and tuning Hondas and Acuras and
affixing stickers that inexplicably say "Top Fuel" and
"Powered by Mugen" all over the windows. The
DEATHBOMBARC street-racing club has been winning many
awards for their outlandish and innovative
turbocharged Civics and Integras. And if you ever
wanna see some fine hotties, you should come to some
of the car shows. So many bikini girls pose next to
the cars, and there's all kindsa freaks lookin' for
hott boi with an unnecessarily loud exhaust tip to
hook up with. These events are like a "D.O.H.C. BABE
MART."

All of the bands on DEATHBOMBARC hafta sign a pact so
that when they die, the members are buried in the
label's very own mausoleum on the beach. It seems
kinda weird, but when you see it, you will think it's
a totally RAD BEACH TOMB, and you will be itching to
sign your band on the dotted line.

Just like LIL POCKETKNIFE, in fact! Some vintage
synth nut was so enamored by their keytar that he
tried to run off with it. He was a very handsome
fellow, but not after the club bouncer caught up to
him a block away and punched his face in. That was a
FINE LICK, KLEPTO.

Ben from LOAD RECORDS was inspired to get in on the
import tuning action and even used attached a
hella-sick rear wing spoiler that stuck up two feet
higher than the roof of his car, but it applied so
much downforce on the back wheels, which is the last
thing you want when you're modifying a front-drive
car. The compression rate on the VTEC motor
skyrocketed after the ill-advised addition of a
particular bolt-on turbo, and then the CAR DROOLED.
Those East Coast guys should stay outta the West
Coast's import tuning game....stick to your Camaros,
East Coast!

When Dim Mak released yet another useless record by
The Apes, everyone looked the other way, but EATS
TAPES was happy that Dim Mak also made the album in
all three major formats including cassette. They
played the Apes tape in their little tape player and
managed to build a really cool song out of the
blandest track on the album, then they released it as
a sorta remix called "TASTE APES." Yeah, that's
pretty clever, huh?

All bands are used to getting "Freebird" requests
shouted at them, but at the last COMETS ON FIRE gig in
SoCal, some old-school punker with a flannel shirt
around his waist had the nerve to request they play a
Circle Jerks cover. To which, the band suggested that
the mosh-dude and his moshy friends get in a circle
and see which ONE COME FIRST.

Dan from ON/ON SWITCH was so impressed with shows in
Davis after seeing a couple of them, but the last one
was a bad experience when he stepped in something
really foul. It didn't help Davis' cowpoke Aggie
image in the least when a stampede of cattle broke
loose from the animal husbandry lab and ran through
the streets, defecating all over. "If there are so
many smart ag and bio students at UCD, tell them to
develop a NON-SHIT COW, and I'll come back," Dan said.

But those scatological-brained dudes in POPULAR SHAPES
were pretty much awesomed by this bovine shit-storm.
"AHA! SUPER PLOPS!" exclaimed the drummer.

That is all for now.

The serious answer: it depends on what sort of boys you want to meet. If you want to meet literate boys, go to a library. If you want to meet artful boys, go to an art gallery. If you want to meet educated boys, go to an university lecture. If you want to meet boys who are into music, go to a gig. If you want to meet boys who are into the same type of music you are, go to a gig of a band you like.

how does it relate to awe/sublimity/beauty and things on the epic/grand scale.
if it finds awe/sublimity/beauty isnt it small and/or localised
does it find it at all.

Is there a temporal element as well? I.e. I'm thinking that whatever is sublime to post-structuralism is something dynamic and occurs over-time (and is potentially endless). Whereas, epic and grand things remind me of monumental architecture and is high-modernist by contrast.

From Philip Kaufman (with William Goldman)'s script for The Right Stuff..

Pack of Journalists: (approaching, eager) MR. COOPER! THERE HE IS!

Cooper: (straightens tie, sotto voce to Trudy) BIG SMILE.(looks up, smiles)

Interviewer: (to tv cameras) WE'RE TALKING TO GORDON COOPER, THE NEXT AMERICAN ASTRONAUT TO ORBIT THE EARTH. (to Cooper) SINCE YOU'RE THE LAST OF THE ORIGINAL SEVEN, AND THE LEAST WELL-KNOWN, TELL US... (slowly, measuring the words) WHO WAS THE BEST PILOT YOU EVER SAW?

Cooper: (turns to Trudy, knowing smile, repeats in disbelief) WHO WAS THE BEST PILOT I EVER SAW? (serious, to journalists) WHO WAS THE BEST PILOT I EVER SAW? (thoughtful) WELL, I'LL TELL YOU...I SEEN A LOT OF THEM. MOST OF THEM ARE JUST PICTURES ON A WALL.

Voice of Journalist: (shouts) WHAT DID YOU SAY?

Cooper: (louder) PICTURES ON A WALL. (faraway look) BACK AT SOME PLACE... (shakes head) THAT DOESN'T EVEN EXIST ANYMORE.

Voice of Journalist: MR. COOPER, SPEAK UP.

Cooper: SOME OF THEM ARE...(looks at Grissom) RIGHT HERE IN THIS ROOM, AND SOME OF THEM (faraway look) ARE STILL OUT THERE SOMEWHERE, DOING WHAT THEY ALWAYS DO -- (patiently) GOING UP EACH DAY IN A HURTLING PIECE OF MACHINERY - PUTTING THEIR HIDES OUT ON THE LINE - HANGING IT OUT OVER THE EDGE - PUSHING THAT ENVELOPE - AND HAULING IT IN. (thoughtful, faraway) BUT THERE WAS ONE PILOT I ONCE SAW WHO I THINK TRULY DID HAVE THE RIGHT--

Voice of Journalist: (shouts) HOW CLOSE WERE YOU TO NOT HAULING IT BACK?!

Cooper: (looks around, pause, realizes what's called for, grin) WHO WAS THE BEST PILOT I EVER SAW? WELL, UH...(big grin) YOU'RE LOOKING AT HIM.

I don't worry about that shit. If a band I like/espouse/am curious about is playing there -- I go. Over the years, at IP, I witnessed: The Ramones, Suicidal Tendencies, the Wedding Present, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Cop Shoot Cop, Foetus, James, Nick Cave & the Bad Sees, Curve, Echo & the Bunnymen, Lush, Man or Astroman, Skeleton Key, Fishbone and about seven dozen more I can't recall at the moment. The place is fine by me.

actually it didn't even offend me the first time, jon. i just thought it was an opportune moment to offer the opinion that you and others here seem to exhibit sociopathic behavior in your eager attempts to offend and to transgress the boundaries of internet decorum for the sake of being transgressive.

so, i was thinking particularly of the following "symptoms":

- Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom
- Lack of remorse or guilt
- Callous/lack of empathy

i'm judging only from the evidence available on ilx, of course. perhaps ilx suffices as an outlet for sociopathic tendencies, and you're perfectly normal IRL; in which case i think we've got a bit of a raw deal.

anyway i met a swedish guy who lives in rochester. he says it's cold, which struck me as funny, since he's from sweden.

That reminds me, did I ever mention that I had an AIM chat in, like, 1995 with someone who claimed to be Phil Rudd of AC/DC? I never knew why anyone would want to impersonate him -- he wasn't trying to pick me up or anything and seemed genuinely interested in whether the younger generation still listened to AC/DC -- so I always wondered if it was actually him.

(I had no idea who he was, btw. I mean, I'd heard of AC/DC, but that's about it.)

Same thing happened to me but it was someone claiming to be in Polvo. I didn't know who they were.
