This is the thread where you SHOUT FOR THE MODERATOR!

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed
This is a thread where you ask for specific posts/threads to be deleted or amended, on ILE or ILM. I don't read all the threads there are, and nor do the other moderators, so this is a back-up because this is a thread we WILL read.

If you want to use it, give the thread and message (link to them if you know how) and your reasons and we'll do something about it (i.e. change it or reply saying why we're not.)

Don't use this thread for anything else, thanks.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose you can link this thread to the ''Can threads be deleted? What is locking a thread?'' section of the FAQ for future newcomers.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 September 2002 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes I will when I work out how to edit the FAQ.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and people please stop emailing me to have stuff edited, I AM NOT THE MODERATOR, I have enough to do around here as it is. I will only bother if a) It's very very urgent or b) I like you.

(Tom:
Bottom of the front page > Administer Site
Or top of the New Questions page > Administer Board, for board specific FAQs)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 15 September 2002 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Graham. Yes we also need specific moderator emails in the FAQ. Me, Mark and who else is currently - Sean? I started this thread because I am bad with emails and only just opened one from N. wanting something important deleted.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

do you need more moderators tom? if you need any others give us a shout.

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 15 September 2002 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've updated the FAQ with this thread and with a request for people not to bother Graham with moderation queries.

We need sub-moderators in each of the major time zone regions that post to ILX - Europe, America, NZ/Aus.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I do have a question though: why not just delete stupid threads like "You are all gay" instead of just locking them? Why give the half-wits who post these things the satisfaction of seeing that their stupid comments are still floating around out there?

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 15 September 2002 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well said, Nicole! There are half a dozen on ILM which could just be rubbed out. Sod open access/free speech blah...let's just get rid of obvious troll droppings.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

one of those threads was funny. they don't really bother me at all, plus i think the best thing would be to ignore them. it does look like most of them were erased though, right?

ron (ron), Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Nicole and Dr C: I'm not sure where locking but retaining them gets us. If there was anything there worth keeping, it might make sense, but it's just a bunch of dull, infantile insults. On the other hand, I can't say that I care much.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I volunteer for submoderator if you need one.

RickyT (RickyT), Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

And I volunteer as a sub-moderator in the sense of moderating subs, in case any of these undersea vessels shows up. I'd extend that to subs as in sub-editors, but there may actually be one or two of them around here, so I'll stick with just Submarines. Or Namor The Sub-Mariner, if he shows up. I can handle him.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(Tom, you can add board mods at the bottom of the admin board page, if that isn't obvious)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 15 September 2002 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I started off locking them, then deleted most of them. I'm keeping some locked but active in case we get IP banning in and I need to refer back.

(Thanks Graham yeah I had seen that - anyone for US moderator? Or Aus/NZ?)

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot option c) You propose marriage on condition of me bothering.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 15 September 2002 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and people please stop emailing me to have stuff edited, I AM NOT THE MODERATOR

P'raps you need to amend the footer, Graham. The 'Problems' link is to your webmail -> perhaps 'Technical Problems' and 'i-am-a-stupid-ass-and-shouldn't-be-let-loose-on-the-innernet-please-fix-my-thread Problems' might fix this? Uh, worded better of course... y're all doing a bang-on job tho.

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 16 September 2002 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's set up an ilxproblems@hotmail.com account and give Moderators + Technical Director the password then?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 September 2002 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i can do the us west coast moderating.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 16 September 2002 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If people don't mind their posts suddenly turning into Photoshopped kittens with the caption "(and then they all lez up)", I'll be a moderator.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 September 2002 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan for moderator, obv

Alan (Alan), Monday, 16 September 2002 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A very Dan approach to life in general. This can sometimes make him a bit suspect at house parties.

why not just delete stupid threads like "You are all gay"

We're not all gay?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 September 2002 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Ned, we are all made of stars. Didn't you get the memo?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 September 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU MUST NOW BE KILLED.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 September 2002 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought we wouldn't have to discuss Moby in this thread?

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 16 September 2002 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, being the fiendish rapscallion that he is, has seen fit to ignore this wise injunction.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 September 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously now that Moby has been mentioned: "This is the thread where you SHOUT FOR THE MODERATOR!"

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 16 September 2002 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

DO YOU SEE???!?!??!?!?!? (graham), Monday, 16 September 2002 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

FOR THE MODERATOR!

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 16 September 2002 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't use this thread for anything else, thanks.

-- Tom (ebros@netcomuk.co.uk), September 15th, 2002.

ha ha!

ron (ron), Monday, 16 September 2002 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

your gay dan ragget

diane, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If Dan married Ned it would be hard to argue otherwise.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Delete my Marilyn thread! I completely screwed up the html. Oh, and it would be nice if Tom-bat deleted the other postings I asked him to delete a couple of days ago too.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(So long as we're here someone please delete the original question from the "white guys calling black guys bro" or whatever thread, as not only do I get weird emails because of it but also it contains a piece of information that should not be available to any of the few people who would put together what it meant.)

if i don't say (nabisco), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

n*b*sc*, the thread makes no sense if i just delete the story (also the spelling bee story is grebt): so either i can make you properly anonymous as a poster - eg change name and email, or you can give me a safe redux version of yr question

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

logout for anonymity

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think graham has yet programmed a retrospective log-out feature for 13-month-old threads!!

(get on it dum dum dum etc)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

but it was available four posts ago

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, oops

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

mark -- the bad bit is the parenthetical bit in the second paragraph. the second to last paragraph of the question could stand to go, too, as that seems to be the one that provokes weird e-mail (to my work account, no less).

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

also: my thinking above was that if the person i was trying to slip this away from read that post but didn't see my name on it, this person would have no reason to suspect that the offending post has any personal relevance and wouldn't have bothered looking for it (or checking up on who the anonymous poster was, which so far as i know you'd actually have to do something to find out, right?) (too late now, anyway.)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the thread was badly context-bound, anyway: i guess people say "bro" to strangers a lot more regularly in places where i am not

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ok i've done it (i kept the first and last bit of the second last para) and also changed yr poster name and email

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham: retro-active context changer now please!!

dum dum dum...

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't be unreasonable to Graham, Mark! I'm sure he's still working on my rainbow colour-coding (indicating quality and interest of the thread) suggestion, and making the titles dance on the screen, so he won't have time for your frankly not terribly sensible ideas.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 October 2002 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

excuse me, probably a world wide concurrency, but just in case, nz has just gone one hour forward daylight saving, so i feel in two minds about the accuracy of the log of this post

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 5 October 2002 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I've added a thing for deleting usernames from posts to the admin page Mark. Quite a few improvements planned for this weekend.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 5 October 2002 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Including my very sound, necessary and practical ideas, I hope!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 October 2002 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yay graham!! (ignore martin btw he is obsessed)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 5 October 2002 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Obsessed! I have many more well-developed ideas, once we have the obviously needed dancing multicoloured thread titles. The next is that the statscock needs to be in the form of a dynamic piechart that updates every time anyone posts anything. That has to be multicoloured too, but doesn't need to dance - that would be silly, obviously.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 October 2002 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It should rotate like a pinwheel instead of dancing.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 5 October 2002 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it should be like Copernica!!!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Saturday, 5 October 2002 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(the java one)

boxcubed (boxcubed), Saturday, 5 October 2002 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

dancing multicoloured thread titles CHECK

my rainbow colour-coding (indicating quality and interest of the thread) CHECK (really!)

(I don't think Andrew has the PHP image creation extensions installed, so no pie charts for us)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 6 October 2002 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

[i would type a worshipful response but i am laughing too hard and also i have gone blind]

Rebecca (reb), Sunday, 6 October 2002 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(If you have Show Unread Messages turned on, the new answers bit is actually browner the more people have looked at the thread. I really am that bored)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 6 October 2002 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I now see what Martin's world must be like, and fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That version is like ILX on Frogger!

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 6 October 2002 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Kim ist rad. Why the fuck didn't I realize that was the case?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham, I am in rainbow colored awe, you beat the <blink>tag for horrific things done to text on the web!

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 6 October 2002 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That's magnificent, Graham - that's another drink I owe you. I'm glad to see that you are spending your time on worthwhile features, when you have a few moments spare from the pressures of university.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 October 2002 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

okay after messing up with the settings i finnally got the unread messages sign, but im still huge confused about this color and dancing thing, how does it work + how can i get it?

vic (vicc13), Sunday, 6 October 2002 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems that the color bars are now permanent. I don't like them that much. Is there some way they can be made optional, or at least not as garish?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 6 October 2002 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh? They're not permanent. Reload new answers straight from the ilxor.com home page, that should take care of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I was doing that, and they weren't going away. Now they have. I don't entirely understand but...eh.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 6 October 2002 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Graham! I don't think you should let people get rid of the special effects! (Actually I would get a headache quite quickly, so maybe not.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 October 2002 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I messed up and sometimes the dancing version was ending up in the cache. I fixed it earlier today, but my phone broke when I was trying to say so.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 6 October 2002 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

there is something a tad 'unsavoury' in i hate everything.
no big deal, just thought i would mention it.

donna (donna), Sunday, 6 October 2002 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, some unknown mentalist(s) turned up & started spamming - k-blah.

(also - I (heart) Graham & his rainbow-brite boardskillz)

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 7 October 2002 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

PRETTY COLOURS! oh that reminds me, what colour shld our BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES be, Graham? oldskool 216-colour-Websafe-pallette choices only, obv.

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 7 October 2002 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

All 216 then.

New features added when my phone started working today:
- Dividing line within threads showing where you've previously read up to
- Personal bookmarks (for people using shared computers ect) (See the Settings page)
- If you have Limit Messages turned on, and the number of unread exceeds the limit, in automatically switches to Show All.
- A few other things I've forgotten in my slumbers

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(Oooh, the unread coutn gets redder the more times you've previously looked at the thread)

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

okay okay we give in: you rock Graham etcet...

(the dancing titles are funny tho)

zebedee, Monday, 7 October 2002 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

More great work, especially noticing if there are more unread messages than the usual limit - that's a really helpful one!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey can you delete the Momus sleeping with Anthony thread without the word think in its title (the first one).

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, could you delete that last thread I posted, the one about Emmanuel Goldstein? It was a twattish thing to do, and I regretted it almost instantly.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Eeep, I broke the deleting posts thing with yesterday's update. I'll fix it when I get home.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the login screen has a typo on 'forgotton'

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, can you switch Marcello off?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that legal?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that matter?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

and you wonder why you have no friends?

Emmanuel Goldstein, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oi you two, cut it out

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yes ok mark (goes and stands in corner clutching insert ile poster of your choice here).

Emmanuel Goldstein, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone summarise what's been happening please?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark S let one go.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

best not. this 'problem' might go away.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is Emmanual Goldstein? A regular?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

[wanders blissfully into confusing flamewar and talks about kittens]

I'd prefer, say, unread + 10 or 20 for the ones where there are more unread than the limit, but maybe that's just me. I'm mostly not that bothered either way, just seeing all the unread stuff is an improvement, but there are some very long threads around which sometimes get tons of new posts while I'm asleep. (And, eep, those album covers threads are really not good for my computer...)

Also I'd find a preview thing kind of handy but not absolutely essential if it's loads of work/clutter. However, maybe a preview thing would stop people wanting a post-editing option so much and be easier and more secure to implement?

Rebecca (reb), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The preview thing might happen yeah, ok. I'll think about the unread count thing Rebecca.

My phone service was out most of last night, and I think my modem is fucked completely as well. ANDREW, can you edit postadmindelete.php and remove the stripmagicquotes() function at the top? Otherwise we can't delete stuff. Thanks.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Why has this discussion switched to this thread?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ANDWEW. PWEASE!

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Done. Now who said I never did anything for you?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Thankyou.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is becoming more and more mysterious.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

People asked for stuff to be deleted. I tried but couldn't cos I broke it, went home to fix it, discovered my computer had keeled over and died, and so asked Andrew.

Meanwhile: Josh and Rebecca misused the thread concept, while I asked the moderator to pull the plug on a posting machine that the last one out had obviously forgotten to switch off. And N. got confused.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

There are posting machines? Am I the only idiot to still be doing it by hand?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a question: is there any point whatsoever to asking for moderator-changes to threads from before the move? It occurs to me that they'll still be sitting, easily-googlable, on greenspun so long as that server survives.

(If there is a point, then this and the drug thread have reminded me: can we please delete where Ethan really unconscionably stuck my name on an anonymous post in the thread below?)

Dope.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops. I don't know what I did and I can't be bothered to work out. Sorry. It wasn't deliberate. (I have a cold and it feels like my IQ is about -80 and I tried sniffling all day at work to get sympathy but I just got given lots of complicated stuff to do instead.)

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

We still have the admin password for old-ILE. Which post was it?

(Don't worry Rebecca, we were all ignoring everything Tom asks us abusing the thread)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no, no, i'm going to use this thread for its true purpose. could one of the moderators please delete the names of some ex's of mine that someone's just dropped on the FAP Dublin thread? thank you.

angela (angela), Thursday, 10 October 2002 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Done

Graham (graham), Thursday, 10 October 2002 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you!

"Good grief Bob, I'm an idiot. The Shield. If someone With The Power would like to change the thread title so as to interest people who might want to say something about the show, I'd be grateful."

Could you change "The Badge" to "The Shield", please?

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 14 October 2002 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Could someone take my name off the Fox Cartoons thread, where I linked a certain article? Or just remove the article. There are copyright issues involved, and while I am aware of them I wasn't really thinking of them when I posted the article.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 19 October 2002 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was surpised at your brazenness, Nicole, I have to say.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 October 2002 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to have my kitten put down yesterday, I haven't been thinking things through very clearly since then. You can all laugh if you want to, but I feel very confused and heartbroken over it.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

tom. moz needs a rewrite. can i email it to you next week. is it ever going up?

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole I am so sorry to hear that you had to go through with something like that - I hope you feel better soon

J0hn Darn1ell3, Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, bless. Poor you and kitten, Nicole. :(

Rebecca (reb), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not laughing Nicole. That's an awful thing. :(

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to have my kitten put down yesterday

That's AWFUL, Nicole. :-( :-( *hugs*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 October 2002 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks to everyone. I've been feeling awful about this -- I've been trying to read and distract myself with ilx to avoid thinking too much about this, but it's been pretty unsuccessful. But I really didn't want to start a thread about it, it seems so stupid and selfish when I think about what other people go through, like Donut with his grandfather or Mark with his family.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 20 October 2002 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as I am concerned, a pet IS family, straight up. Adopted family if you like, but still.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 October 2002 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry about your kitten, Nicole.

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 20 October 2002 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

We can always see worse things happening to others, but that doesn't stop us getting upset about rotten things happening to ourselves, and nor should it. That's horrible, Nicole, and I am sorry.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 October 2002 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Nicole, that sucks. Was it distemper?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 20 October 2002 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, that sounds like you're setting up some really bad punchline.

Sorry about the kitten Nicole. I like kittens.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 October 2002 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There's nothing funy about distemper! One of my cats had to be put down because of when I was a Very Bad Boyg.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 20 October 2002 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

thats really sad nicole, i'm sorry.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 20 October 2002 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

losing a pet is terrible :(

sorry to hear about this nicole.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 October 2002 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I made some allegations (actually entirely factual, but I can't prove them) on Ulrika, without mentioning the name. Unfortunately, someone has helpfully mentioned the name and made it googleable, so can someone either add asterisks into CJ's post or delete mine or something? The celeb can afford better lawyers than I can...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 October 2002 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

A moderator is more than welcome to erase the first post I made in this thread: Dream experts required
It went through twice. I thought I had stopped the "send" before I amended that post, but I guess I didn't.

ragnfild (ragnfild), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

A moderator needs to delete a horrifyingly large picture of a sperm-covered cock head from the ILX Photoshop fun thread NOW.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 25 October 2002 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Too bloody right. Opening that up in my office gave me serious fright

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 25 October 2002 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Done, ew.

Graham (graham), Friday, 25 October 2002 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Me thinks Somethingawful.com has a setting where any link offsite that directly links to a pic there will be redirected to the massive cockhead... so don't get too mad at Chris V.

From NOW ON!!! If you must display a somethingawful.com pic, download it, and host it yourself.

maybe, Friday, 25 October 2002 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom - can I use the C90 Go idea for the Uni Paper, ie submit my C90 as a feature article, properly attributing the concept as yours or Freaky Triggers?

david h (david h), Friday, 25 October 2002 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Help! My "Say something interesting about this photo of Shakira." thread on ILM has really stupid HTML problems! I think a strategically placed < br > tag might help!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 26 October 2002 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Done.

(Can Tom enlist some sub-moderators PLEASE?)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 27 October 2002 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

To deal with any submarines that show up?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 October 2002 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes Martin, exactly that.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 27 October 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Good, because I was a bit worried that this was a contingency we weren't covering. Two questions:
1. Will this role also cover attacks by Namor, The Sub-Mariner?
2. Who is our plane-moderator?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.imagemagician.com/images/buglebear/sub.gif

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 27 October 2002 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

2. Who is our plane-moderator?

If there is to be a plain-moderator, don't you think it only reasonable that fancy-schmancy receive the same?

ragnfild (ragnfild), Sunday, 27 October 2002 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Can Mr. Moderator Sir please take my real name out of this thread?

JonBenet Rammstein, Friday, 1 November 2002 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

it would be great if my school address was changed to something fake in the heroin thread on ile. thanks..

kevin enas, Saturday, 2 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
My name googles right to here and I'd rather it didn't. Could you please remove my email address? Thanks.

Miss Laura, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Romeo Dunn.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If any kind moderator has a spare minute to remove my login name from my post (the most recent one if there's more than one) on Is this the best place name ever? then that would stop me worrying, but I realise it is a faff and I'm being overly paranoid. Actually, the whole post is pointless, bitchy and uninteresting anyway, so take the whole thing out if it's easier or if you want to.

Someone should make me go to bed, too, but that's probably not the moderators' job.

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 21 November 2002 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

*thwacks rebecca on the head*

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 21 November 2002 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Tom....but it's still up on Greenspun. How do I go about getting rid of that? I sent the webmaster an email but it got bounced back. Is anyone still moderating the greenspun board? I really don't know anything about greenspun, I arrived mere days before the Big Move.

Miss Laura, Thursday, 21 November 2002 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

TOM OR SOMEONE ELSE CAN YOU DELETE MY LAST NAME FROM THE "GEIR HONGRO" THREAD ON ILM

s trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

your last name is "Blobby"?

zebedee, Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Rebecca: There's a special checkbox on the edit message page for it, so it's no bother (and it was a cool post).

Ms Laura: We still have the admin passwords for Greenspun, so editing stuff from there is possible (and I have), but bear in mind it will take a few days at least to disappear from google.

ep: Done

Graham (graham), Thursday, 21 November 2002 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you

Miss Laura, Thursday, 21 November 2002 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

This is kind of a programming question, but would it be possible to create a feature in the settings that filters out the posts of a person? It's not a big deal, I'm just curious.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Absoutely Nicole. Would you want them to vanish completely or just not show the message?

Graham (graham), Monday, 25 November 2002 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham P - cyber hitman.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 25 November 2002 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that needs debating - killfile facilities are a big step.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 November 2002 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed. it's a fundamental change that effects the nature of a thread.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 25 November 2002 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I'd vote against that. I can easily choose not to read the posts of any particular person if I were ever so inclined. I'd be annoyed if I had set that for X and then read this thread where it all kicked off from something X said. I might not even grasp for a while that a post was missing, it would just stop making sense.

Then again, Nicole wasn't trying to make use of such a feature compulsory, so what do I care?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

all graham's improvements to date have allowed us to personalize the way threads are presented -- this will change how they read from person to person in a substantial way. if a thread isn't the same from person to person, that's an important change.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what I was think about, using my work's email address, but my name is googling back to it now, and I'm rather embarrassed. I possibly deserve all I get, but I was hoping a moderator could do something about it on the following two links:

1) http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=007GTH

(work address appears at foot of 7 postings)

2) http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=007JBy

(work address appears at foot of 1 posting)

Normie, Monday, 25 November 2002 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If Tom or Mark want to do that for you Norma then fine, but I don't want to encourage editing stuff on Greenspun.

Graham (graham), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom/Graham/Moderator people

I've just been emailed by a journalist at my Plinkyy email address, which means they could google my posts here couldn't they? They are running a story on me tomorrow, is there any sort of damage limitation you can do?

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

We can't edit Google, but remember posts here have there address hidden (ie Plinkyy@h...) when you're not logged in (ie Google), so googling your full address doesn't return anything.

Graham (graham), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

OK then, would either Tom or Mark be prepared to edit out my email addresses from the two linked threads? It may seem trivial, but it's nevertheless proving a real worry - and I'd appreciate someone's help here.

Normie, Monday, 25 November 2002 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm afraid if you google 'plinkyy' it brings up the active users page

gareth (gareth), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

erm yes if i can remember the passwords for greenspun!! also you'll have to wait till this evening at least

mark s (mark s), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd really hate to pick up the papers tomorrow and read exerts from my ILX postings. Can they do that?

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

if you google plinky you get a million pages with all kinds of unrelated plinkys
if you google yr email addy you get nothing
if you google like gareth says, you get url for the active users page: can you access this if not logged in?

if not, but if yr smart, you can track ilxor down from this: maybe that's how they got yr addy in the first place?
but then finding where exactly you actually talked about the sitch?

mark s (mark s), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, mark s! This evenings absolutely fine. The posts in question highlight my talent for shooting myself in the foot, and it'll be a relief to seem them without the elan of my email address.

Normie, Monday, 25 November 2002 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose you are right, it's just that they know so much about me already it's freaking me out, maybe it is just paranoia, but all my worst fears have been realised so far....

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Could someone mark the subject header for "Look, what do you all fuck like?" to warn that there's now nudity on it?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just changed the picture to a link.

Graham (graham), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

there are variants on the pulp and freakytriggerlogo thread too, so maybe link those too or delete them

dave k, Monday, 25 November 2002 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

normie, your email is now "normie@normie.zone" on those threads

use this gift wisely

mark s (mark s), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Wonderful! Thanks very much for that: a humble, rockabye email address, befitting a new epoch of using this gift wisely ... When the wind blows, the cradle will rock ...

Normie, Monday, 25 November 2002 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I'd vote against that. I can easily choose not to read the posts of any particular person if I were ever so inclined.

It's a lot easier said than done, though, especially if the person is persistent in posting a lot.

I'd be annoyed if I had set that for X and then read this thread where it all kicked off from something X said. I might not even grasp for a while that a post was missing, it would just stop making sense.

For me personally, I think this is less of a problem than the posts themselves.

Then again, Nicole wasn't trying to make use of such a feature compulsory, so what do I care?

No, not at all. It's not a major problem for me, but I was just wondering how difficult it would be. If nobody else wants this I don't see that it would be worth the trouble of creating.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Just found this thread...when we switched over to ilxor.com I lost my moderator status, which was okay as I have been fairly busy. I wouldn't mind hacking away at it every so often as there's time, though, if someone wants to add me.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/news/page.cfm?objectid=12403336&method=full&siteid=89488

Anything anyone can do to stop me getting fired as well?

Plinky (Plinky), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

this is surreal! sorry plinky

ron (ron), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure what grounds they have to fire you. (Except possibly fannying around on a message board). Its possibly best to head them off at the pass and go and talk to them first about the situation, stating that its your private life and how it does not affect your work (blah blah blah), and also that the article does not put you in a negative light. (He is the one in prison, he is the one who has left his wife). It will all blow over.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

But what did you expect, Plinky, by posting stuff where it can be googled? If they find ILXOR it's all here.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

its the illusion of anonymity dr c. there is no such thing. if you try hard enough you'll uncover anything

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

anything? oh shit

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah you want to try and convert a firing into a formal warning for fannying about.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

can someone change "d*v*d h*w*e" on the music journalists thread into "david h" also, can someone search ile for "d*v*d h*w*e" and replace with "david h" (there are two instances, rjg and doom-e said it). i have a good reason.

dwh (dwh), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haha.

aw.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

dwh: you can't search for d*v*d h*w*e, so you'll have to pin it down a bit better than that

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

MODERATOR to "criminal has reformed" thread. i'm getting a bit annoyed. i don't think we want image referrals that could link our server with the one linked to.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Moderator was for once on the case. I'm getting a bit annoyed too.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

rjg - on fap glasgow
doom-e - the one where he said 'chump' so search that. thanks.

dwh (dwh), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

dwh i made it so

i love you all but blimey what a trying day that isn't over yet by a long chalk

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Deleting the ahem 'hot' threads is not I think a good idea - but how about locking them for a couple of days?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

mark, my turkey is too dry, will you edit it with this baster here?

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

mark, sophie and i are going to see bowling for columbine. what is the quickest route from brixton to camden.

doom-e, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

victoria line to warren street; then northern line.

isn't it on at the ritzy?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

vauxhall to euston. northern to camden town

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, why did i just call the victoria line the vauxhall line? (i use that damn station too much!)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(tom, my instinct is that ilxor as ever can bury all under a slurry of cheerful non-toxic piffle: so let's wait and see)

(by "mark", doom-e does not i think mean me, btw)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i think anyone looking for "hot" stuff must spend so much time scrolling in-jokes and trivial stuff that he/she must have a hell of a lot of time to spend reading nonsense... this should be back to normal in a few days...

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, Can you direct Graham to this:

For removing sensitive webpages from Google's index so googlers will not find info on certain threads:

Remove Content from Google's Index

Google

see section relating to individual webpages, where the webmaster can get google to NOT index certain pages by inserting meta tags.

There is also an express Google Service to remove pages from the Google Index:

Note: If you believe your request is urgent and cannot wait until the next time Google crawls your site, use our automatic URL removal system. In order for this automated process to work, your webmaster must first insert the appropriate meta tags into the page's HTML code.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Mark S about the overwhelming power of ILx's toxic sludge. And ILE is here to be found. I for one think that Mark was very good on the Plinky Plunk threads, and I think its a litle sad (though obviously less trying on the moderators) that he has now been scared off. Still, that's the community aspect kicking in.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i. NON-toxic sludge!!
ii. i have not been scared off (yet): i think ptee means PP here

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, guys!

that was a concern!

i dunno - it' s on at the theatre 'sides the gap. i'm going to see him speak soon. marcello re: neurotic emails that i sent out, i got one back from ian astbury seeing, chill, yer a good writer and full of life, people are drawn by it and can see it in yer writing.

my life does get strange!

ps. i was honestly floundered on how to get to camden!

doom-e, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i) I meant toxic sludge, so obviously disagree now with Mark on that one.
ii) I do mean PP, my lack of GrammZor skillz shows out by having two subjects in that sentence. Sorry. ANd I know you haven't been scared off Mark - you are mighty a Ph34rl355.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete your strong leadership is needed on the Christmas FAP thread RIGHT NOW because poor Mark is having conniptions.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Plunk has mentioned Plinky's boyfriends name on the Glasgow Nazi Problem thread. Not sure whether it's worth doing anything about but I thought you'd better be alerted

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks ricky: sorted

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What the heck is going on? Unable to connect for a while due to volume of connections, apparently. Is this because of eeeeevil tabloid journos bearding us in our lair? An IL*Or's home is their castle, innit.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

A check of the logs reveals the following evil tabloid ILE searches -

"does green make you hungry"
"bo selecta"
"midvale school for the gifted"
"tweenies game patch"
3 hits from http://slashintheboys.cjb.net/ which seems to be a boyband site
and, um, "mandee nude"

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know it seems to be getting busy very easily at the moment. I have just found out a really easy way to make things work better, but I'm not in a position to do it from here.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha the picture that formed in my head there wz of graham pulling out the plug to the entire internet and me going "good"

i haven't even looked at ilm today, are they all playing nice?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, ilm has been better than ile for months! we talk about trance

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

and spanish bands (i didn't started it, blame jim).

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM is fairly quiet. Tomorrow it is getting new moderators! We need a Def Con system for moderator alerts I think.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

lm has been better than ile for months! we talk about trance

hein?

(thinks: "who else likes trance?" "me" "oh right" "i like that really spikey noise" "yeah especially when it arpeggiates over a soft wailing sound" "yeah, and lasers rock" "um" "er" "that's it")

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

d00d we need beepers like in holby city!!

graham can programme them to beep us when someone posts to this thread!!

oh no!! it's just kittens!! curse you meddling kids!! oh no!!

ect

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I've done the changes. There should be much less of a delay when you click threads now. If you spot any errors let me know.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 28 November 2002 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

RoxoR thanks Graham!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 November 2002 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist, yr email only appears to those who've logged on, which won't include spambots

mark s (mark s), Monday, 2 December 2002 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

as a new ilm moderator (i will categorize threads occasionally too, i promise!) i wouldn't mind some work getting thrown my way.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Sterling you could start the equiv of this thread on ILM! (I keep meaning to but never do)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh er maybe you could mark up that "clothes you want to wear but don't dare" thread as containing some vaguely naughty pix (yes toraneko not that rude but I AM AT WORK!!!!) so us in open plan offices don't get THE FEAR??

Perhaps you could describe in WORDS your fantasy outfits. WORDS are sexxxy. YES.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling -- might be a job for you on the Touch records thread, someone's been named who other posters didn't want named...

alext (alext), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry to be a pain in the ass but if possible can someone remove all my posts from the "what do you think of my poem?" thread or if that's impossible/inconvenient then just this one. I just realised something: important. sorry. it isn't urgent, but it is key.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i should be more careful

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Moderator...could you, if you can, change my first post in the "This is the thread where we post pictures of hot chix/boyz that share our music taste!" thread so that the first link is followed by "(not safe for work!)" and the second link is followed by "(careful! some pictures on page not for the squeamish!)"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 7 December 2002 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Done.

(I will stop the board locking up ever one day, I promise. I know exactly what causes it)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 8 December 2002 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Image Only thread needs an Adults Only warning!

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a thread on ILM where I called Vince Gill Vince Vaughn. Could someone change that for me please?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes you just have to live w.the consequences of yr actions dan

for example i am very drunk

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

If you change that for Dan, can you fix the one from months ago where I claimed that my favourite guitarist was Elmore Leonard? I meant James, obviously. (I expect to see this thread revived with me claiming my favourite guitarist is James Leonard.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha the moderator is drunk and eeevil 2moro the world will be a cube

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like all my posts switched from being in English to being in Ugaritic. Thanks!

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

to me they were always were, rocket s!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Everybody's a critic.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The "name a random ILXer" thread could do with having my post wherein I name Starry deleted.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah. Never mind, then.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hiya. Could someone remove my full name from/render it un-googleable on the 'Who Do You Fancy?' thread? Not that it particularly matters, but there you go.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty please?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I've said anything here that I don't want people reading, but it kind of makes me twitchy.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Is you're name googlable via your email address anyway?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yes, but I thought that people can't see that unless they're logged in...? I guess I trust people who are registered with IL* not to be total cockfarmers. Ah what do I know.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I will I will I will fix these lockups.

(This one caused by someone searching repeatedly for indie horribles Pretty Girls Make Graves, while I was doing some administration)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you know they weren't searching for the Smiths song and were constantly baffled by the threads being returned about indie horribles?

That's a terrible name for a band.

Lesser Tit, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd just like to state here, 'cos it mighta offended someone and I didn't mean to (one of the moderators said it was 'tasteless') that that 'gag' on the Courteney Love thread wasn't a gag but an unfortunate coincidence: I'd been reading the fake breasts thread and Norman Fay posted a "breath in, dive in link" (read 'real dolls' - it was a worrying site) and when I was on that page I wanted to see if it was able to post SWIRLY (ie moving) pictures on ILx (well, I know its possible, I was wondering if I could do it) - it just so happened, extremely unfortunately, that the moving image was both naked and to be posted on the Courteney Love thread - it was my stupid fault I should have just pressed back and entered a non-context sensitive thread, or just the HTML Playground (was that up at the time?) to test whether it'd work. I'm sorry to anyone who I offended and for what it's worth, generally I agree completely with what JBR said on that thread. Sorry.

Should I delete the Anarchy forum that's just opened up?

Graham (graham), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, you mean the add new board feature isnt disabled????

isnt that just asking for anyone to start their own forum using andrews server space and your work effort?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's a bit cheeky them simply landing on our server w/o a by-yr-leave, but just stamping them out w/o sounding them out seems a bit harsh

contact their moderator and politely find out what their meta-rules and stuff are: like, can they guarantee not to fuck up other ilxor boards?

mark s (mark s), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth: No it isn't, I decided it would be cool to let people start their own things to see what happens. Obviously it's not meant for people with no connection to the other sites.

Graham (graham), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

isnt that just asking for anyone to start their own forum using andrews server space and your work effort?

Well this is kind of what we did with Phil G!

Yeah talk to them and explain the various issues - eg how much traffic do they expect?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone actually gone in and read the stuff that's there? It's pretty offensive. Bitter experience tells me that censorship would perhaps be the best option.

smee (smee), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Errr there are only about 3 posts so far, two of which are links (which I haven't followed). What was offensive?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

have you looked at that link. it's not too nice. anyway, i say you just need to inform that actually they WILL be moderated, so ner. should you feel the need. i.e. it's NOT anarchy

Alan (Alan), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The link I read was overtly racist.

smee (smee), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes who wants to moderate them? :)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Delete the fuckers. I don't see why people should be encouraged to censor words like n*zi here to stop dodgy people turning up, if those kinds of links are gonna be allowed.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Delete those posts maybe. I'd have been a bit cross if the second person who'd found my new forum was a racist but it wouldn't make me one - give the board in general the benefit of the doubt, I say.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile I've neutralised the links so they don't point accurately anymore.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh. I'd always be very suspicious of people who point others towards the words of racists, even if apparently for disussion purposes.

Open access to setting up boards is likely to cause greenspun-esque problems isn't it?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The racist shit on the anarchy board continues.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham - please delete

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Much better to have a usenet style procedure for setting up boards.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

So long as it says "associated with Freakytrigger" at the top of the boards page I think a pretty strong hand in taking down distasteful portions is perfectly in order.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Benefit of the doubt has now been given I think.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the admin for that board wz listed as the ilxor moderators, the guy who started it and someone called "enneff"

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Boot the board off. The anarchy board always had loads of traffic that would probably kill the server. And having lots of racist drivel on their board doesn't exactly help their case.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, it's gone.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope not in a way that would provoke the originator to go hogwild on our board. i see from lynskey's thread that they messed AAD around something rotten

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope not. I've disabled the add new board feature too.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

He's not messed us around too bad - but I am pretty certain that he's the same guy that did a lot of it to Greenspun. He's still posting racist abuse to the old Ask a Drunk even though theres no-one there to read it. Silly. I think the point about the board being "affiliated to Freaky Trigger" and the point about there being no crossover between it and the rest of ilxor are really valid. More than anything I'm pissed off I've had to be a bit of a Hitler about it. *hugs girlfriend*. Ah thats better.

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

A quick word too about the guy who has set up SF History and I Love the Beatles etc. He is the one who started messing up the old Ask a Drunk with html and the reason we had to abandon Greenspun. Many AAD people hate him with a passion. However, in reality he is a 14 year old kid, which tempers my opinion of him greatly. I'm seriously impressed with his html skiLLzOR and his plucky attitude, even if he can be annoying as hell at times.

He was under the impression that ilXor was just like Greenspun and thought it was new boards a-gogo. He does have at least 4 boards going on other sites as well as an MSN group. I've emailed him and explained the difference between ilXor and "the 'Spun", and asked him to calm down a bit.

There's an ILM thread called "is it true that the release of encrypted cd's, that prevent them from being "burned"is a violation of copyright law?" where I made a post on January 21, 2002 accidentally signing my real first name.

oh thanks, Graham, I see what you did to that post but what I meant was, I would prefer that to be changed to "felicity" rather than leaving my name up there like it is now.

Is it time to ban Becky? I know I was one of her defenders early on. I've not read everything today, but I've seen homophobic and racist insults from her already. I know we don't have any specific rules on this, and I don't think I've ever called for this before, and I'm not really bothered by the weak and dumb abuse, but those seem to me to be certainly crossing the line. None of these have been directed at me yet, but they are still offending me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 30 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

seconded

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 30 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

considering an entire board was deleted for nearly the same thing it doesn't seem out of line to ban and delete any trace of it's existence. I doubt very much if anyone will mourn the absence of their responses to the troll. Nothing good has come of this, and it's not going to get better, despite surreptitious attempts at containment.

At the very least I think it fair to demand the posts containing racist and homophobic slurs be deleted.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 30 January 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think its unecessary. If we do ban her and she is a ./kiddie as she claims then she'll be able to spoof her IP address and come back with more. If we do agree she is a problem (and she's very easily ignored), we should report her to her ISP and try and get her net connection removed. It may work as a good shock for her. Otherwise just ignore it .

Ed (dali), Thursday, 30 January 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Ed.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 January 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds very similar to the Sean M Hall situation we've had on Ask A Drunk. Be firm now rather than than letting it go on or else you are in a world of pain.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 30 January 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed, I am just going to be honest here,so don't take this the wrong way, I think you are being stupid and just singling me out, many of your little friends have been just as abusive if not worst, and you are just talking about Becky, becky becky.....as for the homo stuff.I never said i hated gay people, so try to figure for yourself why you are just making up things as you go along, speaking of which, if anything, there is a 'queer' category on this site, so figure out what that might imply, einstein.....do not mistake me for being concerned with my net connection or you or anyone 'shocking' me by having it taken away, isp providers are much too involved in making their money to be too concerned with silly people like you, and 'taking' away peoples service because of people like you, trust me,i even once tried testing the isp company into taking it off myself, pretending to be some disgruntled victim of net abuse, lol, and they just hung up the phone on me a dozen times, and told me to stay out of the 'rooms' where said person was abusing me' and here i was trying to get my own service d/c lol...it was really funny, and this was not very long ago, as i do this experiment a few times a year just to see what happens, and i even call up other isp providers to see what procedures they go through in situations like that, trust me, they don't care about you, they just want their money, and it would take more than a few "i don't like her's" and "she's being nasty and racist like" to get anyone d/c...
as far as being a script kiddie, I am more like in the advance stages of proffesional hacking and php server side scripting, i can write out my own password forms and break into any site imaginable, and get loads of free stuff, but i chose not to do things like this because it is dishonest, although trust me, i have entered a good share of rather secure website to basically look at how everything was made, and how easily it was to break in and take control of the site if i wanted to go any further, and i went all the way in ......
I have been doing tons of computer stuff since i was a wee kid, when the apple made their first home model, my parents were one of the first to get one, and i have been surrounded by computers from day 1, so it's not like i am talking shite when i am saying this, microsoft made their first user friendly programs in the late 80's and trust me, i have got all of those programs learnt and memorized like the back of my hand.and it's not like i needed user friendly programs, because i was already creating my own computer games and stuff like that when i was 8 or 9......and i was able to build and format my own hardrives/comp by age 10 and i knew how to hack into any site, and e-mail adress as soon as they existed, so basically if i were you, i wouldnt talk so much shite about me, because if you bothered to read anything,i am not here to be ganged up on, i came here to be welcomed and if most people were smart here, they would be my friend and take advantage of my vast knowledge of computers ,i know them inside and out, online and offline, i know so much shit you would shit yourself from the shock about what I know.now, run along.....

becky lucas (becky_lucas), Thursday, 30 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem is not your presence here but the way you entered. You didn't take time to work out how this forum works; both technically and socially. Categories only exist for archiving purposes only, as you may have noticed there is no category listing on either of the main two entrance points to the site.

Like any society ILX has accepted rules, norms, code of behavior etc. These are not written down, they exist in flux between the members of the society. A little observation, and it doesn't take long would have shown you how people behave here. There's a fair amount of banter and most people are fairly thick skinned but only to a point.

You still have a chance to earn the respect and friendship of people here, don't waste it because there are some great people here.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 30 January 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

well no. I came here to be friendly and kind and i have already found out who the nice people are from here, ed-okay? The way i entered really has no merrit under the circumstances of which this is just the internet, and it's not like i can personally enter your world on the other side of this screen and make my first impression, i asked a question or 2 or 3 the first day, and none of my questions were out of the norm, and anyone with a functioning brain should be able to understand that and accept that, and just answer them if they wanted or not, i have bumped those threads for you or anyone to easily check and see what my actions were here before i went bitchy yesterday, my first thread was the size 28/men/sex ....my second one was the matted hair one....and so on so forth...i didn't lose my rag so to speak until a few days of your little friends constant attack and verbal abuse, then I lost it,I was even attacking people by mistake, simply because they had the same name and i didn't know if one nick was different from the other 4 nicks who were attacking me, and also a mark by mistake (mark c) and i feel SO guilty for telling mark c to ....*sighs*....i didn't realize i was attacking the wrong people until the one nick southall called me on it, and when i checked , he was right and i felt so HORRIBLE, but then all of this would have been avoided if you people would just be nice in the first place....i have seen some people blame several people for this, but after reading every thread i have created (the first ones before i went mad), i know exactly who were the ones who started all this crap and i can only say to them i hope you are happy for starting shite where no shite was needed, and my only fault in this was basically defending myself, and then just completely losing it yesterday, perhaps the 'categories' serve no purpose, and as for archiving, it can be done by date, instead of category (if that is really the way it is intended to be understood as) because a category is a category nomatter how you paint it, draw it, or say it.so talking about sex shouldn't be all that uncommon in a category called sex....it is pretty self explanatory, isn't it?
also, you need to realize that if this is a board, you should expect plenty of people coming here,if not joining here, basically all of you were at once strangers, and i have never heard of friendships being created by telling the new person joining that they are men when they are actually female,etc.etc. or telling them to fuck off out of sheer enjoyment, my god, you couldn't be that daft-ed....if there is one thing i cannot stand is dumb people, or when i see people that things just go over their heads....i know why i have been picked on, so please don't act like if i was the one who did anything wrong *at first* because although i will and have admitted to being quite the nasty bitch on here, but it was WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY after everyone who was capable of being nasty and mean to me was and were.
that's all i have to say for now , in this thread.

becky lucas (becky_lucas), Thursday, 30 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean M Hall is apparently seeking ilxor as the new home for the old Greenspun board San Francisco History, according to this thread

Important announcement!! All read!

I ask this request not to be granted for several reasons. He trolled the Greenspun AAD and then began killing threads with html, forcing the move of AAD to ilxor. He posted some peoples home phone numbers to the board knowing it was unmoderated and therefore could not be deleted and put on html redirectors to questionable sites. I let him back on the new AAD in the hope that he'd be a bit more civil but after a short spell he resorted to his old games. I sent him several emails telling him to calm down which he threw back in my face. I've had to block his email address.

Sean has an MSN group devoted to SF History and also posts on several other message boards on a similar topic. He has all the webspace he needs elsewhere and I don't see why you should give someone server space who is not in any way a regular or even minor contributor to ilxor. He seems to be shifting content from the old board to ilxor already. I also believe the Greenspun SF board had its own moderator who should really be the person to talk to as Sean uses these boards for Becky Lucas-esque antics and as a html playground.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 31 January 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

as as a SF resident, i find sean m. hall a nuisance. please ban him from this forum then banish him down to southern california. please.

gygax!, Friday, 31 January 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

We don't want him down here. Maybe Idaho?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 31 January 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist - go ahead re. ILM - I will try and hunt out the threads you mentioned.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 31 January 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers for the message you've put up on SF, Graham. I will be sleeping easier.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

He's also started a music forum.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

There seems to be something on the Karaoke FAP thread that continually craches my browser. Is it just the dodgy photo of my glass eye.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

which browser, which system. No problems from here.

Ed (dali), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Seems okay now. I think itsjust an unstabel stystem that was a bit phased with the idea that Steve might finally get a bluddy haircut.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell is going on with this board??? I don't like the new "message" or even the idea of a logo!!!

MAKE IT STOP!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 31 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The logo should be a smiling picture of Spencer saying just that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

could you make a category for picture threads? don't know, they're a lot of them around now. I never know how to categorize them. maybe with the search and random buttons its not neccesary anymore to have them specifically categorized.

erik, Friday, 31 January 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

can someone please delete:

Search and Destroy: White Female Rappers

i had a change of heart and fear of google retribution. (i do think she's super cute but she is annoying and there is a small chance of some lurkage spillover).

thank you in advance.

gygax!, Friday, 31 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

kindly note that that hyperlink refers to a thread entry not an entire thread.

gygax!, Friday, 31 January 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps there should be a separate forum for "I Love Comics" or something? Or are we just experiencing a "Same Shit, Different Name" syndrome right now?

kate, Friday, 31 January 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh my first post to this, but, well, just take a lookie at ILE. Plus getting this with the CC makes me nervous about getting more crap in me inbox.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what the moderator's opinions are on IP banning and
how do people feel about posting obvious go*glebait, even though we joke about it. I know IL* is wonderful because it is liberal but sometimes you can get an AAD situation like on the old greenspun and it can be hard to undo. It may be something to think about . . . I don't know the answer but see how it goes. Of course if everyone has been liking it lately then please disregard. Sorry for doing this as a logout but I dont' want the kind of email that Aaron posted up there.

a regular, Friday, 31 January 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I got two more of them. I prolly should've logged out but too late now?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I got one from him/her just saying "I Know". I have no secrets or anything that I can be blackmailed on, I didn't team up with Sarah Michelle Gellar to murder anyone at the beack last year or anything.

Kate, comics? I see like one thread a week or so on the subject, far less than on books, say. I remain opposed to hiving anything off to new boards, especially one of the few subjects where I'm among the experts!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Four or Five comic threads in a row just seemed excessive to me. I don't have a problem with comics threads, but it's all coming from ONE PERSON.

kate, Friday, 31 January 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, you can't accuse conner of not loving things though! he's totally insane but in the best possible way (VERY ADD, from my recollections of friends w/kids who have the condition.... s'cool though, at least he can focus enough to type instead of hurling his keyboard through a wall or something)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

consider this a second vote to get rid of all the junk (some of it pretty/cool junk, but junk nonetheless) that is cluttering up the beloved ilxor????? please????

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, those: but none of them are about comics, they're about Japanese animated films. I don't think Conner has grasped how this works here. He's acting like he's starting lots of chatrooms on the things he wants to talk about. He hasn't grasped the model yet. We don't need a separate forum for comics or werewolves, we need him to grasp how this thing works.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

If people don't have the courtesy to look and see that ILE is not a place to start a million threads in a row about the same thing and make it look like some moron's internet chatroom then they don't deserve any beneft of the doubt. But banning is hard.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And possibly a bit premature in this case? What has he created, seven or eight threads? I am more concerned about weird and sinister emails to people, as that's far more intrusive. Anyone else had any?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

''If people don't have the courtesy to look and see that ILE is not a place to start a million threads in a row about the same thing and make it look like some moron's internet chatroom then they don't deserve any beneft of the doubt.''

let him post 10. so what? he's not going to crash the server (at leats i hope not).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry. I'm feeling very intolerant right now.

kate, Friday, 31 January 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

as long as it isn't abusive its all OK.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Call me old fashioned Julio, but i like New Questions and Answers to consist of an indication of where we are all at. Not a random list of embarrassing internet crap with 3 replies, mostly from the same person.

It's not a huge deal at the moment, I know, but it's indicative of someone who has no regard for other people. They are the truly solipsistic ones - ILE has a thousand real people behind it who are here rather than somewhere else for a reason.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear Graham/Tom

Please can you delete any posts I've made to the "This is the thread where you SHOUT FOR THE MODERATOR!" post.

Cheers!

Celeste (Celeste), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCKING D'OH!!!

Moderator, could you please delete H**ton's real name from the Being In A Band With Your S/O thread? I know there are probably only two people here that haven't figured it out yet, but... fuck, just take them out, please?

kate, Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

wow sterl,

this brings back memories of my journalistic days (eek!)

thank you!

gygax!, Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

If it were up to me, I would ban Conner as well as Voldemort.

The Punisher (Nicole), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

can we have an option to turn off logos and any announcements?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh* Okay, I knew it would happen sooner or later, but I was really hoping for later.

Graham and/or Tom - can you please either remove or delete my two posts from the following thread So, right, then, who do you fancy?
where I made the request to see the childhood drawings and than made an unsavory reference to a touch subject and I don't want people to google the subject and see the post come up, or my reference to the artists?

Thanks :) I promise to be more thoughtful in the future.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 1 February 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Done, MsL.

A few points -

- The moderators are me and Mark S currently (do we have any American mods?) - Graham does the technical stuff, it's not fair to expect him to do all the post deletion nonsense as well or take decisions on what to do about trollXoRs. (This is really minor but a lot of the posts go Graham-and-Tom and G has enough on his plate)

- I don't think we should have a logo either but it's not that big a deal. The super-secret message is ugly but it seems to be working a bit. We're going to review the situation on Monday.

- I emailed Conner and said can you not post so many threads please, and he didn't then post any more last night anyway, again we'll see what happens. We've had this kind of excitable poster before (on ILM at least once) - generally ILX is too boring for them and they go away quite quickly. It's only cos it's happening after all last week's nonsense that it's particularly grating now, I think.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 1 February 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps a good idea, would be to redirect the problems? link to a moderator rather than to Graham, to avoid the moderator confusion?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 1 February 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you Tom and mark s (and Sean) -- it's a tough job you do. Sorry if my thanks were misplaced earlier.

Although I have goofed in the past, I do think that a possible future change of heart is something to consider before posting. The searchable nature of the archive is wonderful but it also brings accountability.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 1 February 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, then, TOM OR MARKS CAN YOU PLEASE TAKE "HILTON'S" REAL NAME OUT OF THE S/O's IN YOUR BAND THREAD since you ignored my request the first time.

Thanks.

kate, Saturday, 1 February 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

when I first saw the super-secret message I thought 'well, that's a weak-kneed european response if I ever saw one' *ducks storm of scones and baguettes* but it's definitely working so far. The situation was getting WAY out of hand; I credit the ssm and Momus starting a war thread for righting the ship. I don't like the ILX logos as much as the rejected Freaky Trigger logos, but I like that there's a different one everytime I login. the Connor threads are hardly a problem yet.

if you do drop the super-secret message (it probably won't be neccessary by monday, it probly isn't neccessary now), maybe add new super secret messages, maybe a code or a riddle or something, your call.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 1 February 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello! Could name of Edgy Style Mag be edited from thread started by Anthony please? I never refer to its name directly on here for a REASON. Don't wanna tempt office Googlers.

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 2 February 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, so did you kill Conner yet?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 2 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Could you take my post out of the "Please comment on this band biography" thread, please? I made some rather careless mistakes there.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone change the title of the Matthew Barney thread to something a little more thinly-veiled please? like "Classic or Dud"?

Honorary Moderator (tracerhand), Thursday, 6 February 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

why can't I post pics anymore? everytime I use the code i or IMG SRC thing I get a bad image alert? is this temporarely?

erik, Thursday, 6 February 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

again, nothing has been done to make my posts worth reading. rectify please!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 6 February 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh MY God I posted too many pictures and now ILe is overloaded, is that it?

erik, Thursday, 6 February 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No, sorry. I updates the html checker last night and it's gone loopy. I've disabled bits of it until I fix it.

If you have more problems with it, you can always uncheck the "Chek HTML again" box and post the message anyway.

Sorry.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 6 February 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a frivolous idea which shouldn't be implemented if it takes more than 5 mins to do -

An option to sort threads by number of new answers, so moderators and rubberneckers can quickly get to the potential conflict zones.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 6 February 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to post to ILM and keep getting this error msg:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/ilx/pubhtml/boardfunctions.php on line 634

Is this a problem at my end or at ILX's?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 6 February 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah it's ok - I took out a html ref and it worked fine.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 6 February 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

it means if you post we all die in 30 seconds

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 6 February 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

don't cry for me i'm already dead

barney s (mark s), Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone needs to rub the image in the "Someone in here" thread.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm at work and I've just had to de-louse my computer!

smee (smee), Thursday, 6 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone needs to rub the image in the "Someone in here" thread.

Now is the time for "It looks like someone already is, hohoho".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 February 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

HTML checker problems should be fixed now.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

not a shout for the moderator, one for graham, probably.

currently the ilx page is starting:
< head >< title >images/kim.gif< /title >< /head >

which is bad.

btw i also get an empty page containing just
html>
from time to time.

what changes did you make to html checker btw graham?

andy

koogs, Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's more robust at telling where tags end, so if someone accidentally types <I/> is now interpreted as an I tag not an I/ tag, which is how browsers interpret it.

I'll get on Tom's idea.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

that's the main http://www.ilxor.com page i was talking about above. sorry, should've mentioned that before.

andy

koogs, Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I probably just missed a discussion of this one day, but didn't the page title used to be the same as the thread title? And now it's just ilxor.com? Just wonderin'.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was just going to comment on that. I found the window title reminding me what thread I'd just jumped to 'New Answers' on very useful indeed.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup. Lately, I've been opening threads and then reading them and thinking, "Hmm.. .What the hell is this supposed to be all about?" and then I have to scroll back up to the title.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that bit's a feature.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 February 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It is if you're at work and the title of your window is 'ENORMOUS KITTENS PLATONICALLY RIMMING EACH OTHER: CLASSIC OR CLASSIC?'

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 6 February 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

('ENORMOUS KITTENS PLATONICALLY RIMMING EACH OTHER: CLASSIC OR CLASSIC?">JUST FOR YOU, N)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(Graham, I think your HTML parser is seriously broken now.)

'ENORMOUS KITTENS PLATONICALLY RIMMING EACH OTHER: CLASSIC OR CLASSIC?

JUST FOR YOU, N

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes that's fine Dan as it still says ilxor.com at the top.

Graham - sort that HTML checker out already!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 6 February 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

[it keeps fucking up the links a la above and last night on the oopsgay thread - I thought I was going insane]

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 6 February 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The oopsgay thread. Oops! It appears that I've gone and gayed myself.

Oops (Oops), Thursday, 6 February 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Could the thread title showing up as the page title be an option on the Settings page?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Moon on a stick, anyone?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that should be an option too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry. I didn't know how complicated that would be.

No, I take it back. I'm a little princess and I wants it!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

*stamping my feet*

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh, saucy.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't mean to mess up the page title, I was trying to sort out the koogs' problem and I type the wrong thing. The HTML checker should be fine now. Tom, I've added your feature.

Graham (graham), Friday, 7 February 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham, when the HTML checker was acting wacky, it also was skipping entirely over the feature that shows the posts that have been posted before you managed to press "submit" but after you loaded the page that surely must have a simple and clear name that I'm not thinking of right now. This may be fixed, but I'm mentioning it "just in case".

Let me know if you need me to be a little less clear about what I'm talking about.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 7 February 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone remove the Joy Division thread I started on ILE. I posted it obviously in the wrong board. Thanks.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 7 February 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for bringing back the window titles, Graham. You're doing a great job.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 7 February 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I've added a new "later" feature for when you get bored in the middle of reading long threads and want to mark the rest as still unread. You can turn it off in the settings. I hope you like it, and I hope it works.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 9 February 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just noticed that 'later' thing and wondered what it meant. That is genius. It's the feature I've always dreamt about and forgotten in the morning.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 9 February 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham, this site is wonderfully feature-riffic. Thanks.

Is there a manual for the features? The FAQ doesn't seem to go into them, and I'm always wondering if there's something I'm missing. (Like, I just started noticing the "Subscribe" link at the bottom, and I'm unsure what it does. Oh, sure I could just click it and see...) (But also there's a feature I've been pining a bit for, where if you read a thread and decided you weren't interested in it, you could set it to "ignore" and it would stop showing up in the "New Answers" page. Obv there should be a "reveal all" button as well, in case you change your mind... Anyway, I dunno, maybe this feature exists already! Or maybe it would overload the system!)

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 9 February 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the manual needs updating probbly (i'm not volunteering cz the interweb will be over and telepathy in place by the time i do it)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 9 February 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Another great addition, Graham. I don't know what subscribe does either.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 9 February 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Well click it, and find out!

I don't like the not interested thing. I might get on Ed's idea of letting you mark threads though.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 9 February 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

You could be able to mark things in three priorities. Watch, Normal and ignore. Watch could be red, normal black and ignore grey.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 9 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

and my threads could be marked in brown

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 9 February 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

mine should be marked in gold, coz that's is what they are.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

subscribe to email alerts for the thread, presumably

ron (ron), Sunday, 9 February 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that's what it does. This place is so full of great features! You're wonderful, Graham.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 9 February 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with ev'one, this 'unread' feature is the biz.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Sunday, 9 February 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Could a moderator change Ned's smiley in Telling someone how you feel about them two years later--Classic or Dud? into a message that says "{WINKY REMOVED]"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't remove Ned's winky!!!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Evil castrating freak.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure that Ned would agree that sacrificing his winky in the name of comedy is the noblest thing he could do.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The dudes from the "Why Do Some Men Hate Women?" thread are going to come after you, Dan.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Not if they value their winkies, they won't.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure if the lurker in this thread is a regular or not, but his message for Ally is creepy and questionable:

ILM UNMASKED: Reveal thyselves/Display thy visage!

Who knows, maybe it's a friend of Ally's. But I dunno. It's unsettling.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks to the moderator who changed the title of the Matthew Barney thread, whoever you are

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is Dan spending his precious time talking about my winky rather than his?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Best ask Ally if she'd like that one removed, I'd say. It does read as very creepy indeed.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's totally up to Ally. I totally meant the "Aww, creepy" comment, though. It's all sweet and stalkerish.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll email her.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

*looks at thread* Yeesh, that is utterly unfun. :-/

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally if you want it removed that's fine - I'll check out who it is if you like (not seen the post yet myself).

Something I thought the other day - we've got 500+ posts on the thread now so I'm going to lock it tomorrow and start a new one.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you start a nice "This is the thread where Graham posts about NEW BOARD FEATURES" too. I guess I should do that actually.

Graham (graham), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

can someone delete my first two posts on the black flag vs. dead kennedys thread. thanks and i love you so much baby you know i do.

gygax!, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

we are moderators not the below-stairs maid

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i want my money back.

gygax!, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

and remove that lacy number you DECEIVER

gygax!, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom: You don't have to delete it. But if someone could please privately let me know some details about who it is, I'd be appreciative - having some "issues" again with someone and want to just make sure it's not them being obnoxious.

Thank you.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the anti-Su Miller troll is back.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me who said the creepy things about Ally and I'll go kick their ass! (if that's not too creepy which it is so I'll just go now)(go kick some ass that is)(sigh)

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Will a moderator please look at my posts on the '"Hipster" as pejorative' thread and delete each and every single one of them, including the apologies, if you think any of them are offensive? I don't trust my judgement about anything at all right now.

Dan I., Tuesday, 11 February 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally I've checked out who it is and will email you.

OK, this concludes the first shout for the moderator thread. We'll always have the memories, right?
