100. Grandmaster Flash - "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" (16 votes, 1081 points)

'best pause in a song' - that hesitant little scratch between "His Zodiac sign is Capricorn!" and the reentry of "Good Times" in "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel"

"48 people voted for the #1 single"

I think I can predict #1 easily, but I don't want to ruin the fun and all your hard work Darryl.

Something I voted for made it! Something I voted for made it! Something I voted for made it!

(But I wouldn't be surprised if my #1 doesn't.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

I never voted because the deadline occurred around one of my most anti-ILX phases (also, it was taking me longer than I expected to rank everything), but I was going to vote for "Let the Music Play," so I'm happy with that.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'm surprised Shannon isn't higher. I had her in my top 10 I think.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

"Let The Music Play" was high on my list, Top 20 at least, maybe Top 10.

95. The Fall - "The Classical" (16 votes, 1120 points)

Best Fall cut ever: "The Classical" (on Hex) = closest they've ever come to genuine circus funk (closest they'd come to funk at all, for that matter). - -- Frank Kogan (edcasua...), July 12th, 2001.

Darryl Strawberry (Darryl Strawberry), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

94. Guns 'N' Roses - "Welcome to the Jungle" (20 votes, 1124 points)

i think they're underrated also, and i really liked the unsettled opened-out self-hatred: it had much more power and unease in pop metal than in most hangover sour-grapes punk, because it crackled so uneasily with the braggadocio
also i really REALLY want to fuck axl (the body not the person: i am not insane thank you)

-- mark s (mar...), August 30th, 2002.

Darryl Strawberry (Darryl Strawberry), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

The Classical was a single? I'm confused. But no big deal, congratulations to the hard-working tabulator (s).

93. Don Henley - "The Boys of Summer" (24 votes, 1126 points)

Don Henley = Boys of Summer - even as a child this song made me feel like i had lost something. and i was just a kid!!

-- eedd (e...), June 6th, 2004.

I liked "Boys of Summer", but only as a subset of liking "Africa".
-- Tim (tfinne...), June 5th, 2002.

There needs to be a hip hop track that samples "Boys of Summer" to complement the punk-pop and trance-pop versions. I imagine it as a Ja Rule comeback track (he's already sampled "Africa") or possibly a Cam'ron affair.

92. Modern English - "Melt With You" (21 votes, 1139 points)

I always liked how the drummer comes in a bit late at the end of the vocal breakdown on "I Melt With You" by Modern English. It is a total flub, but I like how it sounds as the drummer speeds through the fill to catch up.

-- earlnash (stereo99_9...), July 30th, 2004.

i once had a dream that i was in the Modern English and we were in the forest with all our equipment and we had to play "melt with you" in like 30 seconds, and i kept looking at my watch in a panic because noone knew how to play the song and when it finally came time to play the song i ended up playing guitar, keyboards, bass, and singing. i pulled it off pretty well but i was freakin' out the whole time, because at first i was just supposed to sing it, and then all of a sudden id see a keyboard in front of me, and id think "oh shit, that keyboard part's about to come up and nobody's here to play it. IM GONNA HAVE TO FIGURE IT OUT ON THE SPOT!" by the end of the song i was exhausted, but satisfied with the performance. nobody was there to see it happen though, so i dont know why i was so worried about playing it right.

90. The Cure - "A Forest" (18 votes, 1170 points)

There are a slew of amazing live and studio Cure cuts I assembled into my own homegrown boots, so yow. The 'alternate' version via concert cuts of Faith and the eight differing takes on "A Forest" in particular make me oh so happy.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

wow, "The Boys of Summer"? Great song, but I'd think ILM folk would fucking hate it.

Hot list no far, but I'd expect no less from an ILM 80s list. "Let the Music Play" sucks though.

Associates - "Party Fears Two" (12 votes, 1180 points, 1 first place vote)

The Associates-Party Fears Two

now that's grandeur.

-- Dan Selzer (danselze...), May 10th, 2004.

I was 18 in the summer of 1982. "Party Fears Two" was part of the soundtrack of that summer. And I was living it in DUNDEE. I've had some unhappy times since then, but I'll remember that wonderful year and the part that the music of the Associates played in it forever. Whenever I listen to Sulk I'm 18 again and the world is full of opportunities that I never eventually took up

85. Echo & the Bunnymen - "The Killing Moon" (21 votes, 1183 points)

Guilty of a charge levelled at many other bands discussed here (notably Killing Joke), Echo & the Bunnymen are nothing if not completely and utterly pompous. That said, however, you cannot deny the scope and grandeur of some of their work. While it may seem overtly histrionic and pretentious to some, in my mind, the wind-swept "Killing Moon" absolves the band from any of the ego-related shenanigans they can be accused of.

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), March 25th, 2001.

Darryl Strawberry (Darryl Strawberry), Thursday, 6 April 2006 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

84. Soft Cell - "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" (19 votes, 1197 points)

"say hello, wave goodbye" is magnificent. i'm not sure how well he handled this later on, but on this record marc almond's struggling with his voice's inherent limitations is put to best advantage, epitomized that last wavering high note. he really knows how to tell a story--an incredibly expressive singer, if not a notably technically proficient one.

as for the story.... well, often male prewar country singers would sing ballads from the POV of a woman, which often serves to heighten my investment in the story even though from today's perspective this habit seems odd indeed. here we have a gay man singing in the persona of a straight guy singing to a girl, and the effect seems somewhat the same--not coy, not ironic, not camp as i understand that. just a story whose emotional undercurrents are made universal via the conviction with which almond puts across the details.

(those details included an entirely convincing back-and-forth between denial and disgust, transcendence and pettiness. i guess that's even hinted at in the title. and left unresolved by song's end.)

(i suppose a possible alternate reading, which i'm happy to hold in my head at the same time as the previous one, is of a [closeted?] gay man falling extravagantly in love with love for a woman, as a means of denying/transcending other feelings. the resulting melodrama is less the source of emotional trauma than the projection of a trauma that cannot be admitted.)

but yeah this song feels like a kind of apocalypse, but with just enough bitter humor to keep it from feeling sticky or overwrought.

82. Young MC - "Bust a Move" (20 votes, 1208 points)

"Bust a Move" came on the radio the other night and it was like a long lost stepchild. I still knew all the words! Even my roommate knew some, and he listens to classic rock!

-- Josh (kortbei...), May 30th, 2002.

I think "Bust a Move" was the moment at which the US in general noticed that rapping had become really fluid and impressive and amazing. Obviously it helped, public-wise, that Young MC seemed friendly and unassuming and was going on about non-threatening comedic topics -- all this left the spotlight on the fact that he was just verbally impressive.

-- nabisco%% (nabisco%...), May 30th, 2002.

Darryl Strawberry (Darryl Strawberry), Thursday, 6 April 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

81. The Smiths - "Bigmouth Strikes Again" (23 votes, 1217 points)

Are there songs out there which are so well-written that it's impossible to do a bad cover of them? Is "Bigmouth Strikes Again" one of them?

-- Dan Perry (djperr...), February 3rd, 2003.

Darryl Strawberry (Darryl Strawberry), Thursday, 6 April 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

"Bust A Move" is completely brilliant. And as if that contribution to pop-rap wasn't enough, Young MC also had a hand in "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" too.

musically (musically), Thursday, 6 April 2006 03:38 (nineteen years ago)

"Bust a Move" is my favorite rap song of all time.

"She's dressed in yellow. She says 'Hello.

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 6 April 2006 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

Correct, "The Classical" was an album cut, a single. I don't think potty-mouthed singles were very common at that time. As I recall none of the nominated Fall tracks were singles--and in general their singles were not taken from albums until later in the 80s when they started releasing stuff every couple months. I would've rated "The Classical" highly but for that.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 6 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

I am so happy to see "Follow The Leader". I've spent the past week or so discovering that it's the best headphone song ever, or at least the remastered version is. I've also discovered that the album Follow The Leader is even worse than Straight Outta Compton as far as "Hey, the first three songs are great!" goes.

Re: The Beat - Save It For Later

I remember The Beat. I remember Hands Off She's Mine, Mirror In The Bathroom, Best Friend, and Can't Get Used To Losing You all charting. I bought 'I Just Can't Stop It' when I was 7 years old. But I have never even heard of Save It For Later. Was this a hit in Britain? When did it come out?

We never had The Beat in the States, though, right? Just Ye Englishe Beate. But whatever, "Save It For Later" rules. I hope I voted for it... If not, thank you ILM for having my back.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

I am surprised at the amoung of guitar based music on the list. Particularly because, if there was one decade where the best pop music was not guitar based, then the 80s were it.

79. Hall & Oates - "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" (17 votes, 1220 points, 1 first place vote)

In "I Can't Go for That", Hall, who has been having a fabulous sexual relationship ("you got my body" "I'll do anything that you want me to"), cannot go for his lover's suggestion that the relationship deepen into something more romantic and exclusive ("now you want my soul" "being twice as nice") as he suspects that the lover is being disingenuous ("the same old lines").

I've talked about Rick James elsewhere recently - despite his standing as a top African-American, I'd only ever heard Superfreak until recently - he's never gone top 40 in the UK, so is not very well known. Superfreak isn't even listed in the Guinness book - I think the charts covered then went down to #75.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 April 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

I could swear I've heard it at wedding receptions, but maybe that's just my imagination.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 8 April 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, he only had 5 Top 40 hits in the USA, none higher than #13, so he wasn't that huge, just very memorable. "Super Freak" itself only peaked at #16.

couldn't find any comments on this one (all de la ilm comments go album focused ye gods). probably the only song i can remember hearing on college radio and pop radio and mtv and my schoolbus ALOT at the SAME TIME, i played the fuck out of this thing at my eighth grade spring dance (ie. "def dance '89").

Darryl Strawberry (Darryl Strawberry), Saturday, 8 April 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

rick james dominated the r&b charts reagan's first term to an extent that discussing the rivalry between him and prince wasn't absurd (mary jane girls = vanity 6, eddie murphy = sheena easton).

Rodney's motives are beyond the comprehension of men (R. J. Greene), Saturday, 8 April 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

So according to this poll there are 75 80s songs better than Super Freak?? No way! How many musical moments are better than when Rick James yells "Temptations sing!" and the Temptations start whoaaaaaa-ing? The whole song is pure gold. I also heard "U Can't Touch This" before I heard "Super Freak," but neither song has aged for me at all.

musically (musically), Saturday, 8 April 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

I heard the Hammer song first too and when "Super Freak" came on the school bus radio (my first exposure to it) someone said that it was quote "the Weird Al Yankovic version of 'U Can't Touch This'". The worst thing is that for a short while, I took that at face value.

Rodney's motives are beyond the comprehension of men (R. J. Greene), Saturday, 8 April 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

"me, myself & i" was ubiquitous at college parties i went to in '89-'91. it is, of course, great.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 8 April 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

i like 'u can't touch this' more than 'super freak' but there's other rick james songs i like more than 'u can't touch this' (there's other hammer songs i like more than 'u can't touch this' too). i do wonder how much 'u can't touch this' helped 'super freak' or cemented its status - if there's no 'u can't touch this' is 'give it to me baby' the more well remembered now? cf. 'under pressure' - without 'ice ice baby' is it's profile closer to something like 'putting out fire' or 'absolute beginners' instead of being easily one of the ten highest profile bowie OR queen songs (in the u.s. OBV)? ie. erase 'u can't touch this' or 'ice ice baby' - do 'super freak' or (maybe) 'under pressure' make this list?

68. Depeche Mode - "Never Let Me Down" (20 votes, 1281 points)

Depeche are one of those bands you can audibly hear getting more and more used to larger and larger places to play as they went throughout the eighties. Everything seemed to get scaled up more, like the echo and reverb was in place because they wanted to create what it would sound like to actually hear them in, if not the Rose Bowl every time, then some place cavernous. And Jesus fuck "Never Let Me Down Again" is SO RIDICULOUSLY HUGE. When those buried orchestral swells and weird wordless cries -- if they are that -- appear at the end, the whole thing becomes a tight loop/effect that is as much grandeur in sound as anything Phil Spector did at his most opulent. Not to mention the fact that the combination of Gahan and Gore singing is a secret weapon, then and now. Gore's proud of being a doo-wop fiend and loving the interplay of different voices and this is one of many points of evidence showing as to why that's a good thing...I can and do catch things in the arrangements that still surprise me every time -- like how on the second verse of "Never Let Me Down Again" there's a new rhythm pattern that subtly kicks in over the main one, a gently raspy overlay. Now I need to go back and listen to it again.

Ok, listen to "Age Of Consent" by New Order and notice how it's such a simple song when you think about it, yet it's pop perfection. It doesn't rely on shiney production or virtuosic playing. It basically starts off with the simplest lead and just builds everything around it. Also, the simple and steady dance beat is just something that I love to death and the fact that New Order writes the best songs and also has that simple but effective rhythym is what makes them my favorite. I'm sure there are a shitload of indie pop bands like that who have inconsistent albums but awesome singles, and I'm looking for a brotha to help me out.

Darryl Strawberry (Darryl Strawberry), Monday, 10 April 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

"Rio"'s presence as the sole Duran single on this Top 100 singles countdown doesn't surprise me a bit. After all, the nominations and voting processes both occurred during a very anti-Duran period in this board's recent history, and people who aren't at all fans of Duran Duran will select something like a "Rio" or "Hungry Like The Wolf" as an example of what they think a good Duran song sounds like. i.e. something totally and completely tired out, something that spotlights a definite weak point in the band's creativity.

Granted, we are still kinda in an anti-Duran phase over here on this message board, but it's eased off dramatically from the point when this whole poll was decided upon. At least I'm not the only one who's defending Duran (yes, I'm more than willing to defend them even though I've just slagged off a couple of their songs) around here anymore, nor am I alone anymore in listening to them unsolicited.

BTW, this anti-Duranness explains why "The Reflex" was never nominated. I know that someone had a question about its lack of inclusion, and... well, I would have nominated it had I known beforehand that no one else would have, but I didn't because (a.) I had also wanted to nominate OTHER stuff and (b.) I kinda figured someone would eventually get around to doing it, particularly since that is the one Duran single to be released that hit #1 on both sides of the Atlantic.

OTOH, I'm glad that at least one thing I *did* vote on, The Cure's "A Forest", ended up making it onto this list. I would be very surprised if more singles I voted on ended up making it onto this list. I've observed how my musical tastes are kinda out of sync with that of your average ILXor, a disconnect that I have come to terms with.

SMRM on point--"Rio," while a great song, is very far from Duran's peak. That it, HLTW and "Girls on Film" appear to be the only singles that regularly make lists like this is a shame--"A View to a Kill," "The Reflex," "Union of the Snake," "Save a Prayer," "Notorious" and "All She Wants Is" are all superior.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 10 April 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

I was always under the impression that Duran Duran are generally loved by ILM! Maybe others didn't nominate "The Reflex" for the same reasons you didn't, as it happened to many other "shoo-in" songs.

I think The Cure are much more controversial on this board and "A Forest" being so low on the poll reflects that. They might get another song in, but you just know New Order and The Smiths are gonna get like 3 each in the Top 10.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Monday, 10 April 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

They're not perfect by any means but I think they both have thier moments: The synth line in "All She Wants Is" (succesfully) creates slighly menacing vibe. And "Skin Trade" has an unconventional cool-sounding chord change.

58. Tom Tom Club - "Genius of Love" (24 votes, 1367 points)

Chris Frantz says people still come up to him and say "James Brown? James Brown!"
-- J Blount (littlejohnnyjewe...), April 23rd, 2002.

There are so many reasons why this song is genius. Let me list a few:

1: That riff! It's certainly one of the greatest synth riffs of all time.

2: The riff again! Sonically, all of the interweaving synth lines are really amazing and unique.

3. As you mentioned, the way she sings "jeen-ee-us OF love" has a very english-as-a-second-language quality to it that is endearing and somewhat mysterious (who are these people singing? they are tough to picture.)

4: There is a tension created between the icy coolness of the vocals (heightened by quality mentioned in #3) and a sort of spirit of raucous goofiness (James Broooooowwwwwn).

5. There is also an interesting tension created between the sparseness and minimalism of the groove and the density of ideas contained in the song (weird chanting, references to other musicians, lyrics that go all over the place).

6. The song has kind of a strange structure. The incredibly strong hook ties the whole thing together and it's mainly what you remember. But all of these different little vocal parts are pretty different from the average verse/chorus structure of a pop tune. It's also interesting that the song title itself is the part you mentioned that sounds very awkward. The lyric "Genius of Love" is interesting and could have made a cool vocal hook. But instead that line is sort of thrown away awkwardly and the memorable vocal hook on the record is the crazy "James Broooooowwn" part.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there are other reasons for its greatness.

-- walter kranz (kranz_walte...), January 27th, 2005.

yeah fuck "genius of love". sick of it.

Darryl Strawberry (Darryl Strawberry), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

I know Cameo's "I Just Want To Be" is actually from 1979, but it sounds more ahead of its time than "Word Up."

54. Soft Cell - "Tainted Love" (26 votes, 1438 points)

actually Soft Cell "Tainted Love" used a moog not a synclavier. Synclaviers were expensive about 10,000$$ a piece. I think michael jackson was the first to use it.

That's incredibly awesome that there are two threads about nothing other than the SNARE in "Word Up". So far the 50's have been rediculous.

Funkytown at #59 is a travesty. A TRAVESTY. And maybe I'm crazy but I was expecting "Tainted Love" to crack the top ten at least?

musically (musically), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I would've bet good money "Tainted Love" would be top 10. I had it pretty high on my list (though not as high as "Say Hello Wave Goodbye" which SHOULD be top 10 even though I'm just happy it showed up.)

Mrs. Haikunym: "Just this: 'You people are all idiots.'"
Me: "People are also upset about 'Funkytown' being only #59."
Mrs. Haikunym: "'Funkytown' is a crap song. 'Tainted Love' is the greatest song of the decade."

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that for some reason, I hadn't ID'd Smalltown Boy until very recently (even though I'd heard it many times before). So unfortunately it didn't make it to my ballot and it would have probably been top 10.

"Beat It": Michael Jackson kept repeating this idea again and again throughout his career, so looking back it's hard not to see the cynicism in it (MJ: "Do you realize that appealing to *one* demographic only gets you X number of copies sold?") but this and "Billie Jean" are as bullshit-free as he ever got in his adult life. He takes his voice as far and as fast as it can go, and Eddie's solo is *perfectly* excessive, and yet MJ's lyrics never betray his total whimpitude, which was always one of the most lovable attributes.

Like Barry, I'm sad about the lack of techno and house, even though eighties was supposed to be the "classic" era for those. Okay, maybe "Strings of Life" or "Voodoo Ray" or "Pacific 808" might make it to the top 20, but I reckon that's it.

I'm glad that "Take on Me" made it that high though. I only rediscovered a few years ago after not having heard it ever since I was a kid, and it was much better than I remembered. Better than any Duran Duran song I've heard.

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

I was always under the impression that Duran Duran are generally loved by ILM!

Ha ha ha ha ha, you're joking, right? I mean, yeah, there were a lot of "I love them"s on the "classic or dud" thread, but that was AGES ago and it seems like most of the people around here just play lip service wrt them -- they're all, like, "Oh, I love their music!!" but when they're presented with a real, actual, NEW release THAT WAS FUCKING CATERED TO THEIR '80S-CENTERED ASSES, they don't even bother to try anything out! If you need convincing, look up the Astronaut thread. The number of posts on it that aren't from me are so fucking puny, it'd make you laugh or cry, AND I WASN'T EVEN A PART OF THAT ALBUM'S TARGET AUDIENCE. Fuck, the whole "reunion" shit is for the benefit of the pathetic shitheads who were all over Duran in the early - mid '80s, but then dropped them like a bad habit by the end of 1986.

Maybe others didn't nominate "The Reflex" for the same reasons you didn't, as it happened to many other "shoo-in" songs.

Possibly. I'm a little cynical about that, though.

I think The Cure are much more controversial on this board and "A Forest" being so low on the poll reflects that.

Highly doubt that.

There are so many Duran Duran singles that shit all over "Rio" it isn't even funny. Give me "Union Of The Snake", "Save A Prayer", "Girls On Film", "Hungry Like The Wolf", "Notorious", "The Reflex", "New Moon On Monday", "I Don't Want Your Love", "Come Undone" or "Ordinary World" ANY DAY OF THE WEEK over stupidly-overrated-and-overplayed "Rio".

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Dan Perry OTM. Esp wrt the post-1985 output. I mean, fuck, Duran Duran released SO MUCH GOOD STUFF post-1985, starting with Notorious and moving on toward Medazzaland and Pop Trash (I have the lyrics to "Starting To Remember" in my ILX user info page) that it's such a darn shame that so many people choose to focus on their early '80s input only.

Thank yous should go out to The Good Dr. Bill and rogermexico, BTW. Thank you thank you thank you.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

Dee, regardless of whatever problems you might have with me, it's been pretty well documented that as far as DD singles go, we agree; it's not particularly shocking that we might both think that "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone" are better than "Rio".

Dan (But, You Know, Whatever) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

man, I should've voted, I'd have brought "Joint" up to 15 or so!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

Just as a way, way xposted note, "Boys of Summer" has been sampled— Hush, a Detroit MC uses it uncredited, with the sample played at about -8 (lower, slower). He was in some sort of big label talks and had sent us a mountain of promo stuff, trying to get coverage to go in with (even from our unimpressive rag), and my editor scheduled an interview. I asked him about the sample and he denied that it was from "Boys of Summer," and said that he had just written that riff on his keyboard and had never heard the Henley track. I gave it a "Yeah, whatever," comment and he suddenly had something else to do, so he just quit the phoner. He wouldn't talk to me anymore, and this was like three questions in, so the editor ended up having the intern call him and interview him instead. The intern was impressed that Hush was creative enough to write a riff that sounded almost like that great song, "Boys of Summer," but took Hush at his word. How did anyone make it through the '80s without hearing "Boys of Summer," Hush?

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

not one of the 1980's songs scored 1980-9 points!

"Rent" is also suspiciously missing.

I discovered ILM (having enjoyed Ewing's and Raggett's newsgroup postings in the 90s) too late to participate in the poll. Most notable omission AFAIK is SOS Band's "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" which was a template for much of the post "Funkytown" post-funk of the 90s (certainly including a lot of Prince and Gap Band/Bobby Brown etc).

35 Hertz (another "Darryl" in RL) (35 Hertz), Friday, 21 April 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

No "Eric B. Is President"? No "The Show"/"La Di Da Di"?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 21 April 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

and also, when doves cry is more than cold funk. it has this cold skeletal structure but then there's this amazing melody isolated inside it. the melody and the funk are at odds with each other. i mean, it's a crude metaphor to write it, but that struggle in the song's music parallels the lyrics. it also provides the interesting conclusion that melody+funk = baroque.

he's a genius, you know.

and also...GOING BACK TO CALI!

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 21 April 2006 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

I guess the top 3 is good as it can be with this sort of poll. I love When Doves Cry, but I think Michael Jackson's best 80's song is Smooth Criminal (was it even nommed). I'm fine with Billie Jean though.

So, besides Cybotron, no techno or or house on the list?! I though ILX's electronic contingent would get at least "Strings of Life" or "Voodo Ray" there.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 21 April 2006 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

Here is my top ten. Note lack of anyone else voting for them, I guess:

1 Liliput - "Eisiger Wind"
2 Pigbag - "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag"
3 World Domination Enterprises - "Catalogue Clothes"
4 Jesus and Mary Chain - Never Understand
5 PIL - "Flowers of Romance"
6 Aztec Camera - Oblivious
7 Senseless Things "Andii in a Karman" EP
8 Wah! - The Story Of The Blues
9 Danielle Dax - "Cat House"
10 PIL - "Rise"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 April 2006 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

No way does "Love Will Tear Us Apart" deserve to be No. 2, it's the worst thing joy Division ever did!

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

I voted for 3 of those, mark (Pigbag, Aztec C, "Rise")

Five of my top 10 made it, but not my No.1

"When Doves Cry" coming out on top is a genuine surprise to me. Must be a US thing.

Thanks for all your hard work, Darryl!

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

albums albums albums!

richardk (Richard K), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand some things, like how It Takes Two came out above Bust A Move. The flaws of democracy, I guess...

js (honestengine), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

No italo at all on this list. ur all crazy etc

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

Another observation: New Order, Madonna, Prince and the Smiths make up 25% of the top 100.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

6 Aztec Camera - Oblivious
-- mark grout (mark.grou...), April 21st, 2006.

This one and 'Photograph' by Def Leppard not charting are really boggling my mind.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Yay at The Cure making the Top 10.

Really surprised that only one Depeche song made it.

Also no George Michael/Wham!, Eurythmics, Culture Club!!!

No "Rent" or "I Feel 4 U" !!!???

No Siouxsie, OMD, or Cocteau, but I suspect we will see them in the album poll.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

whoa-- i was way off. i was thinking "hounds of love" for the non-shockah... i've been on ILM too long.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm happy with "When Doves Cry" being number one. In general, I'm happy with the way Purple Rain has if anything grown in stature. I just vaguely remember people (possibly just meaning other indie-oriented people, rather than, say, my young cousin K. who I remember playing the first track from Purple Rain over and over again at the beach) being a little dismissive of it in comparison to his earlier work, but I think more of my favorite Prince songs come from that album than from any others.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

Smiths, Prince, New Order/Joy Division, and Public Enemy = 60% of the top 20.

No "Hold Me"? I thought that was an ILM fave...

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

i voted purple rain #1 in albums too. i'll be surprised if it wins, because i've read a lot of the same dismissiveness. i'll grant that part of its grip on me is just that it's the first prince album i bought (although i had borrowed a friend's cassette of 1999). but i also just think it's flawless. i'll grant that it's a narrow call over sign o the times and dirty mind (sott was #2 on my albums ballot), but it is my idea of the ultimate prince album. even the one obvious piece of filler, "computer blue," is a classic.

i like how the u.s./british split ends up being minneapolis vs. manchester. probly be even more pronounced on the album chart, assuming husker du and the replacements check in (altho i can totally see the replacements getting blanked too).

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 21 April 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Smiths, Prince, New Order/Joy Division, and Public Enemy = 60% of the top 20

Yep, that's the 80s for ya!

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

These are the ones I'm surprised not to see here:
Bananarama - Cruel Summer
The Church - Under The Milky Way
Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin (not even nominated!)
'Til Tuesday - Voices Carry
Tears for Fears - Mad World

daavid (daavid), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

The Church - Under The Milky Way

Really??? I don't think there would be much mania for The Church outside of Australia/New Zealand.

Dan (Still, Great Song) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure "the unguarded moment" was on my list.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

I've always thought that particular song (Under The Milky Way) was a more or less universally loved minor classic. I guess I thought wrong.

daavid (daavid), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Biggest omissions:

Van Halen: Jump
Def Leppard: Photograph
Anything by the Replacements, particularly Unsatisfied
They Might Be Giants: Ana Ng
Bruce Springsteen: Atlantic City

I've always thought that particular song (Under The Milky Way) was a more or less universally loved minor classic...

It made my top 20, for what little that's worth. MW-P, we hardly knew ye...

I'm a little freaked out that only one mainstream hard-rock act even made the list. Who stole the Ratt'n'Roll?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I think the biggest omission was "Relax" - how could it not make the top 100? I thought everyone loved that song.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

The weirdest placing for me was "It Takes Two" at number 15. It was no surprise that "Fight the Power" would be the highest rap song, but I didn't expect that to be the second highest.

No "Fuck the Police", by the way.

The weirdest placing for me was "It Takes Two" at number 15. It was no surprise that "Fight the Power" would be the highest rap song, but I didn't expect that to be the second highest.

probably partly a result of it topping a spin "greatest songs of all time" list in the late '80s. it's already been canonized. i think the lack of ROCK, house and assorted other things is just the natural winnowing of consensus. the things that dominated (prince, new order, public enemy) are things that don't have a lot of detractors, just greater and lesser enthusiasts. (the smiths is a little different, cuz there are serious smiths haters -- tho maybe not on ilx -- but the passion of the devout is sufficient to overcome it.)

Great job, "Darryl". BTW, about how many people voted for the full 100 songs?

My list also looks a lot more like 101-200 than 1-100. We should we have a separate thread for posting our individual ballots. Maybe that can wait until after the albums poll results?

Gypsy Mothra re: "When Doves Cry" - yes, absolutely. There's also a lot of compressed heat in the singing (and the singer's central conflict)

Re: "It Takes Two" - damn thing is a tear shit up party. I'm not surprised it rates so highly.

Not in any way dissenting from the general outcome, but no discussion of the top 100 of the 1980s would be complete without:

Falco - "Der Kommissar"
Talk Talk - "Talk Talk"
ABC - "Poison Arrow"
Donald Fagen - "New Frontier"
Murray Head - "One Night in Bangkok"
Wall of Voodoo - "Mexican Radio"
X - "Los Angeles"

Not even saying they have to be on the list, but the discussion isn't complete without them.

Martin Schneider (priceyeah), Sunday, 23 April 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

great list, and I didn't even vote. when doves cry and billy jean where in my all time top three when I was 12 years old. guess I had already great taste back then :). I certainly didn't expect prince to win, thought a close battle between love will tears us apart and light that never goes out

maarten maes (dice collective), Sunday, 23 April 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

Here is the "post your ballots" thread:

Post your ballots for the 80s tracks poll

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 April 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

All you guys over 30 who didn't vote for Maiden, Ratt, Ozzy, Van Halen, Def Leppard, and Motley Crüe need to have your 14-year-old asses kicked.

Metalheads who didn't vote for Maiden, Slayer, Hellhammer, Venom and Metallica need their asses kicked, those poodle haired pansies from the likes of Ratt and Motley Crue shouldn't be allowed anywhere near an 80s metal list.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 23 April 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Martin, "Los Angeles" was not a single. "White Girl" was, but I don't think it got nominated--it would've been on my ballot it if it was, unless I missed it. "Mexican Radio" was nominated (no. 24 on my list!). Actually I'm not sure what your point about "complete discussion" is in the context of this thread, which is necessarily a fragmented and incomplete discussion.

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Sunday, 23 April 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

And no love for Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

I feel very sad about this poll. Far too serious and dull. Where is the silly flounciness, the polka dots and the only way is up?? I also feel very sad that I bothered to write blurbs. I know they were shit, but if you aren't going to include them, don't bother asking for them.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

I finally figured out what was missing from this list: Peter Gabriel. Not one Peter Gabriel song. Shame, shame on us all.

M. Biondi (M. Biondi), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

oh c'mon there's tons of fun stuff on there. it's just that listing and ranking connotes an inherent sort of stuffiness. "when doves cry" is lots of fun (and pretty silly too -- "animals strike curious poses" indeed). even "serious" stuff like "fight the power" is mostly on there (i assume) because it's fun -- "elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me" is a funny line, and "motherfuck him and john wayne" is funnier.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

So - did anyone else vote for Yoko? My top 3 didn't even make the top 200 with a crazy voting system.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah that's not the only thing, though - where are Tears For Fears?

I need some Bow Wow Wow, folks. I really really do. And NOT "I Want Candy" something else. Thanks.

Also another thing I think honestly is that no band or artist should be allowed to have more than one song in the top 100. I mean this seriously, even if it means TFF still don't get props.

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

But I still love this thread for the picture of the Duran Duran Rio 8-Track Tape. I mean oh my fucking god, does there really exist such a thing? Also the picture of the Smiths is great.

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, OK, thanks Robust. Didn't mean to come off as doctrinaire as all that -- I wasn't really aware we were meant to follow the ballots too. I just ctrl-F'd this page, which has the complete 100 and several other long lists, and was shocked that the ones I listed didn't even get mentioned. 'Tis all.

Absolutely interested though no guarantees I'll remember to vote

a waxing interest in waning (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 8 September 2014 03:11 (ten years ago)

I'm just thinking that in the 9 years that have passed since people voted in this poll, the ilm turnover has been trememdous. Still, I don't want to disregard the original results. I just wonder what else we value very highly besides these 100 songs.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 September 2014 03:16 (ten years ago)

I still find it ridiculous FGTH's "Relax" didn't even make it to the top 100! I thought everyone loved that tune.

Tuomas, Monday, 8 September 2014 11:48 (ten years ago)

you should do this, nine years is long enough.
