Thanks for your letter. We always appreciate feedback from our fans. It's definitely been a wild ride as we've grown from a small little site operating out of a basement in suburban Minneapolis into the world's number one online music news and reviews site. While we've put a lot of hard work and late hours into making Pitchfork a success (just ask the Domino's guy LOL), we couldn't have done it without you, our readers.
We take your concerns very seriously, and rest assured that the editorial staff will take a good, hard look at your complaints during our next meeting. Until then, keep on rocking, and remember to check out Pitchfork for all the latest and greatest in new music. Whether we were scaling the heights of Cookie Mountain, vacationing in Illinois, dishing some serious Girl Talk, or going Loon-y for Tapes n' Tapes, it's been a great 2006, and we can't wait to see what happens next!
Cheers,Ryan

the Armed Forces, Live at the Apollo, and OK Computer ones (to leave it at the ones published so far) are very ambitious. maybe you should actually look at a couple of them sometime, Tim.
I mean, all these albums are kinda garbagey, really - that's part of the appeal of rock and roll, pop music, etc. in its glory. Collapses distinctions between the trivial and the awesome and all that. But here's this series as another example of yet more stodgy canonizing goin' on. I don't mean any of this as a reflection on any of the books in particular - I ain't read 'em - but, yes, I find the idea for the series to be dull and unambitious - a step above a desert island disc thang where it's supposed to be like Greil Marcus with less intellectual rigor or something.
xposts - I've seen a few in stores and again reiterating: not meant as a reflection on anyone's work in particular. just about the idea for the series in general.
how do you know there is less intellectual rigor if you haven't read any!!

It's a bribe by a player's agent to a manager, with the aim of securing a transfer for that player.
I think.
-- Tom (freakytrigge...), September 20th, 2006. (later)
A bung is an apparatus used to seal a container, such as a bottle, tube or barrel. Unlike a lid which encloses a container from the outside without displacing the inner volume, a bung is partially inserted inside the container to act as a seal. The lids for safety overpacks for 55 gallon drums some times may have a bung built in[1] for access of the contents of the container. These may be referred to as fuel bungs.
A translation of Dante's Inferno to English from the original Italian uses the term "bung" when describing the grotesque appearance of a particular sinner who has been split from head to crotch, with his bowels (a "shriveled sac") trailing behind him. This punishment is seen in the area of Hell where the Sowers of Discord, a mangled, mutilated mess of souls, are corralled, indicating its roots date all the way to the 13th century.[citation needed] * The word is the root of the insult "bunghole", which is commonly used by Beavis of the animated television show Beavis and Butt-head, which appeared on MTV during the 1990s. Beavis would pull his t-shirt over his head, put his arms out and up at ninety-degree angles and utter, "I need T-P for my bunghole." See also, Cornholio. * In British slang, a bung is slang term for a bribe and is frequently used as a slang term for a cat. This reference to a cat is based on the slang "bunghole" and describes a mangy breed. The actual term is "the bung." * In Australian slang, bung is used instead of "place". For example, if you had a lot of rubbish to throw away and your bin was full, a neighbour might see your predicament and say, "You can bung that in my bin." During a video night, someone might emplore you to "Bung in the next movie..." and so on. The use of the term, however, is in decline. * The term bung may also be used in a slang reference to the anus. * In the game of darts, the center bullseye is often referred to as the 'bung' or 'bunghole'.

i don't understand why that is good or bad? i don't really understand 'transfers' though (i mean, i understand what they are, but i don't understand what the ethical etiquette is around them, and i don't understand the way they mean that a fan of one team might have to cheer against a player one week and then for them the next week).
i like writing!
xp to tom
Basically what Tom said — player's agent is paid £XXX,XXX commission when a player signs for a new club, and "bungs" the club's manager a chunk of it to sweeten the deal.
So it basically involves the manager ripping off his own employer.
And, very often, foisting an over-priced shit player on the club's long-suffering fan
...s
it's like a kick-back, which would be punnier also.
i'm not sure i understand why this is bad! so the player's agent pays the player's manager for taking the player away? isn't that just, you know, PAYING FOR THE PLAYER?
no.
what so are transfers normally for free??!!! that is insane!
no, no, no.

I waited in line to meet him. Right in front of me in line was Todd Trainer of Shellac. They had a really intense, hushed conversation. Then I was next.
I went up to him and said something dorky like, "Oh hey I really like your music and I hope you come back to Minneapolis more often" (He'd not played here in 10 years)
He looked at me and said, "Yeah, you know, cuz we have to get this whole Pangea thing going. The Hudson is going to shrink and New York will move into the Midwest!"
Me: "Um...[pause]...So it'll be easier to tour?"
Bonnie: "EXACTLY!"
Then...he shakes my hand for an uncomfortably long period of time, like 30 seconds. He was smiling and looking right into my eyes and crushing my hand in a very strong handshake.
Then he let go and signed my poster:
"Pangea--------> Forward for Unity! Thanks, XbonnyX"

Hello I Am Goodbye - 9He is first masterpiece as he abandoned Enos wretch wrench noises and consentrate on heartfeel, mellows melodic ballads such as You Can't Take My TV and Who That Man (Why I Not Break His Jaw) but also his first Number One hit in uptempo disco dancer champion Canterbury Love with his hialrious Blue Brother routine in videotape.
No Jackets Allowed - 10It is supreme effort of the 80's with every song a winner, like Sue Studio, so good that Prince rip it off for his "song" 1999, and heart feel duos like Starve With Sting, The Room In Your Hotel and Easy Lava. No record is better than this, other than other certain ones.
You Cannot Be Serious - 10But this is even bet than the Jackets for it finds superstar Collin in groovy compassion mood. No artist define the heartfree eightys with its ThatcherReganism more deep than Phil Collins with his heartfeel anthem "Another Day A Parasite." Then he sing "Hand To Heavn" with brass from the Jacksons Five and it is party wild he is the Best!
A And B Sides - 8This is not so good in fact I cannot think of tracks individ from it but it is stil Phil and tehfefore more valid than scurrulent offerings from Britpopp pretend like Slayer and Orbs before proper songs come back with Osis.
Dance With Me Tonight - 5This is a bad mistake this record. Instead of the hugely melodic ballads with which he make his fortune like Again You're Odd, we get confuse venture into coloured rhythm dominate Africa musics which are reject as amelodic. It is no wonder he return to Genesys not long after with more stringy best selling album like Invisible Mama and Dance With My Duke.

I am the reviewing Phil Collins:
Face Is Valued - 5This debuting effort from the Genesys drummer when he is solo is scampered by the amelodic avantgarde leftwing noises emenate from tracks I Miss You Again and Tell Me Tomorrow remindisce of German stormtroopers Stock Howsen. But it is redempt by queerly melodic offerings You're In My Hair Tonight and Leave Me Wife, Not Easy which give greater offer of promise of star career to follows.

*cue more 'Clash of the Titans' images*
13 is their best in so many different ways. Don't get me wrong, every single album of theirs is superb, but 13 is the single album I own whose every track is radically different to every other, yet throughout, a strong musical and emotional theme is miraculously sustained, and a progression is formed through the wildly disparate effects created by the imaginative instrumentation and HIDEOUSLY creative production involved. The tunes themselves are generally as strong as any in the Blur oeuvre, but on this album more than others they are back up with some jawdropping realisation.
Tender - This song was my first Blur song, yet I spent the first 6 months thinking it was some really, REALLY ace American band. There's no messing with this one, from its awesome chorus to its tastefully-applied gospel choir.
Bugman - Blur KICK SOME ASS. They never did this so well before, or since. The last two minutes are worth the album price alone, as Coxon and his guitar do some quite illegally delicious things.
Coffee And TV - EVERYONE likes this song, right?
Swamp Song - The simple 3-chord thrash to end all others. Succeeds because despite the roughness, every last detail is meticulously seen-to, eveyr crescendo and 'incidental' screech just in its right place.
1992 - Best song on the album. Marries a genius chord progression to one of the best virtuoso guitar-effects solos you will ever hear. And there's a brief yet brilliant keyboard solo.
BLUREMI - Well, there had to be ONE clunker, but it's so short (see also Chinese Bombs, Bank Holiday, We've Got A File On You) that it is forgiven. It's also quite groovy, for a clunker.
Battle - THIS IS THE SOUND OF RADIOHEAD BEING BEATEN AT A GAME THEY WEREN'T EVEN BOLD ENOUGH TO PLAY
Mellow Song - It's nice and neat, but as a comedown after 'Battle' it does the job to a T. The riff in the second half is mesmeric.
Trailerpark - THAT SOLO
Caramel - OK, this one clinches the deal. An organ-led effects-splattered climb out of darkness, when it eventually explodes (orgasms) Blur have taken the very depths of your soul and smashed them over the insides of your skull. And God does it feel great.
Trimm Trabb - Actually, when I wrote that about Bugman, there was ONE exception...
No Distance Left To Run - Yeah, a stripped-down ballad, no effects, freakouts, or curveballs here. Blur don't need to, any more. They've already done all that's needed. Some raw, unaccompanied emotion is more or less all that's left...
Optigan 1 - ...Except for the slumbering, bittersweet finale. It's a beautiful track, and spotting each layer of music peel away and then return is like watching a grandfather clock pendulum whilst half-asleep on ale. The train rides off into the sunset, and Blur have finally released the stone-dead classic they'd always promised.
Your call.

it's succulent and juices fly out everywhere and it's tasty and it's DIRTY but you don't care because you're in the middle of so much joy and safe in the knowledge that, when it's all over, when the dusts have settled, there's the CLEAN UP TISSUE to clear all evidence, and you walk away without anyone knowing a thing of the dirty thing you just did.
sounds like what i get up to after my GF has gone to bed.

1. One time Todd booked Metalux and Montotract on a "beach" (a.k.a., a bar full of d00dz where there is sand on the ground to make it look like beach). Todd was out of town so the bands were left to fend for themselves. The owner--who was assuredly rocking overalls--comes out FURIOUS after Metalux plays a particularly vicious noise set (I think he may have pulled the plug too). He started screaming: "TODD TOLD ME THIS WAS INDIE ROCK! I UNDERSTAND NEUBATEN AND STUFF BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS!"

I like the Beatles, early more than late, and at some point maybe I'll defend their music, but here I want to point out two things that make them likable no matter what: (1) Their third U.S. album was called The Beatles' Second Album, thereby subverting the hegemony of numerical order. It caused creative critical commentary like the following: "I prefer the Beatles' second album to the Beatles' second album, though I'll admit that both the Beatles' second album and the Beatles' second album are quite good and also that the Beatles' second album has some persuasive adherents, those who would take its high spirits and audacity over the Beatles' second album's dark rage." (2) They wrote and recorded a song called "Please Please Me," a title that completely baffled me as a ten-year- old. This was the title of their first British LP, one that in the U.S. was called Introducing the Beatles. Please Please Me was no doubt considered too daring a title for the North American market. What does this tell us about national character? Perhaps that the U.S. is willing to subvert number but not pleasure, whereas the U.K. will undermine pleasure while manning the bulwarks in defense of number. Or perhaps not.

A group of us were out at Tanglewood singing in the chorus for something, I don't remember what. We all got together one night for a drunken game of charades and my team decided to put the worst, most impossible to act out things in the hat for them to draw; our piece de resistance was a word we thought no one would ever, ever, ever be able to act out. Oh how wrong we were.
One of the members of the other team (who happened to also be a buddy of mine from college and the dude who conducted the choir at my wedding) reached into the hat and pulled out a piece of paper. He stared at it for a little while, then started chuckling to himself and shouted, "Okay, LET'S GO!" He signed "1 word" to his team, turned around and mooned them, then stood back up and struck a crucifixion pose. J031, who was on his team, went, "Oh, analgesic!" Dude goes "THANK YOU!" and sits down, leaving our team stunned.
My team lost that game, obviously.

How the fuck is that possible? Hell is an infinite concept. Are yu saying that FYE does the eating of the babies behind the clerk desks there or something?
I'm saying that when you go into FYE! they force babies down your throat (this is the important bit) REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU'VE ALREADY EATEN OR NOT. Shopping there is the music consumer equivalent of being a foie gras duck.
Alternately, take everything you dislike about Sam Goody and then imagine it all happening while Newt Gingrich is rubbing olive oil on his nipples and singing "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)" to you. Also imagine the stench of rotting ham pervading the entire scene.

I keep imagining a bomb dressed up like a schoolgirl and getting spanked.
We came up with a game show where a contestant would be presented with a case, and inside could either be many stacks of bills, an accordion, or a dirty bomb, and they'd have to decide whether or not to open it. "Make the wrong choice, and you could contaminate our studio audience!"

Sold not in the way we usually think of it, but you use the word in that way sometimes. "I totally bought that actress's tears. They seemed totally real to me!" or "I wasn't sure about that idea of yours, but you really sold me on it after that amazing pitch you gave."
Think of this example: You're trying to sell a relatively cheap brand of car that would be ideal for college students and young people in general. You want your brand of car to be associated with irreverence, hipness, energy and a general sense of good, clean American fun. You even make a commercial featuring young people playing at the beach, attending concerts, etc to show that this is the kind of car young people would drive. What kind of song should you put in the commercial and why would you put it in there?
A bad song to sell your car would a song by the Andrews Sisters, as they are not considered irreverent, hip or really wild by the average American college student. A decent choice might be to buy a Ramones song to cater to young people. The Ramones are popular, but not too popular, and are generally considered by many to be hip, irreverent and generally energetic and crazy (in a good way!). They're punk rock (which is to say somewhat rebellious) but they're not necessarily anti-establishment as we like to think of it.
So you'd end up using the Ramones brand name, as well as the actual song, to sell all those abstract qualities I've mentioned above. Now my example is for a fictional car brand that you're selling for a commercial, but the song could just as well be for a montage in a film that has a lot of fast-paced behavior or shows a generally good time. You'd probably still want it for the same exact reasons.
So in the end you'd be using the Ramones for the exact same purpose, to sell hipness and an energetic experience. You'd just be selling it to different people and for different products. Now is it less "sinful" to sell that Ramones song and the connotations it provides to a Hollywood producer than to a Taco Bell exec? Maybe, but that's not really what I'm trying to say. I'm just showing you how in the end you're still selling essentially the same same thing, whether it's to a movie or to a Big Mac.
When I say SELL I'm referring to a literal value exchange. An emotion is not a product. I suppose you could say that a scene can be sold technically, but I'm not aware of anyone who pays money to see a specific 5 minute segment of a film.
You are absolutely wrong on this. Things as abstract as peace of mind, happiness, etc can be considered economic goods. There are all sorts of situations in life where you will part with your money or another physical good just so you can sleep better at night or worry less in general.
Think about it, everybody on this board can be said to have parted with money and time to receive round pieces of vinyl, discs and computer files. What was the point of this? Well, we got really nothing out of these goods in a physical sense, they just took up space and provided vibrations. But I'd like to think at least some of these products all produced good "abstract emotions", the kind you keep telling me are not bought and sold.

A brief (and completely true) example:
I am in Banana Republic, browsing their sale items when in my field of view two white guys rush over to the belt rack.
The thought verbatim that popped into my head was this:
"Niggas be buying belts!"
Lol, now I'm not about to go around voicing these kind of things, but that's the sort of context I meant...

At this point the word has reached the level of confusing social taboo, like something out of Seinfeld. People who normally scoff at the concept of "bad words" get very incredibly superstitious when it comes to slurs, racial ones in particular. The joy people have in using the "n-word" ironically is the fact that it plays around with a superstition/taboo and almost always gets a conditioned reaction from people.
This reminds of the time I watched a comedian tell a joke about Bush eating children for breakfast and after receiving little laughter or horror from the crowd he suggested that Bush eats black children for breakfast and the whole audience gasped in horror.

Also, this invoice is for (dollar amount insanely larger than what we charged her), not (amount we charged her). I don't understand. Please assist.
Me: (stares dumbly at computer screen for about 3 minutes) Hello, Unfortunately, I cannot help you with that. We are not associated with Schn3ll Publishing in any way, and honestly I don't know which publications they do. We haven't even sent out the invoices yet for the issue that your ad appears in (IE LAST FRIDAY'S ISSUE??). Is there a phone number on the invoice that you can call to talk to someone?

"I'd kill this impostor on the spot," said Eltai Muptekeyev, who makes his living in Almaty by posing for photos with a blindfolded falcon clinging to a thick leather glove on his hand.
Even the nation's most liberal political voice had bellicose words for Borat.
"If it happened in a country where rules are more strict than ours, there would have been a government decree to destroy Borat," said Zharmakhan Tuyakbai, leader of the opposition National Social-Democratic Party.
"Even if we set aside his (offensive) personality, he should certainly bear responsibility for his offensive words."
But some Kazakhs were starting to see the humor.
Aigul Abysheva, a third-year linguistics student at Almaty State University, said she at first was "disgusted" by Borat's jokes, especially by his "chain of importance" _ where dogs and horses are higher than women.
"But then I realized he was making fun of ignorant people, no matter where they come from," she said. "The real target of Borat's movie is a couch potato who believes that Kazakhs drink horse urine."
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), October 31st, 2006 9:18 AM. (later)
And there is this:But Galymzhan Zhakiyanov, a Kazakh opposition leader, said it was only natural that Cohen should ridicule his country.
"Instead of fighting Borat we should look at other circumstances that have harmed our country's image," he told the zonakz.net liberal news Web site.
"If human rights and freedoms were not being violated, if Kazakhstan did not become famous for its corruption scandals around the world, then Sacha Cohen would've chosen some other country for his jokes."

The Billy Idol Christmas album!
We are now all blessed with this:
Last night a little santa came dancin' to my doorLast night some little presents were dumped on the floorHe said, "come on, baby, I get one night for love"And if it expires, pray help from above
Because in the midnight hour, he cried "Ho! Ho! Ho!"With a jingle bell, he cried "Ho! Ho! Ho!"In the midnight hour, baby, "Ho! Ho! Ho!""Ho! Ho! Ho!"
He don't like the naughty, he will give them coalBut when there's milk and cookies, he'll eat his belly fullWho set you free and brought you to me, Santa?Who set you free? IT'S CHRISTIANITY!
He lives in his own heavenAnd works from seven to sevenWell, he's out all night in the Christmas airTo show that, to show that Jesus cares
Jesus gave his life for you, babeTurned water to wine, for youHe'll dry your tears of painevery time for youI give my soul to you, LordFor money to burn just for youJesus gives you all and will have none, babeLets-a-lets-a-lets-a-lets-a have some Christmas cheer!

From: (CEO) Sent: Friday, November 03, 2006 10:56 AM To: LIST Global All Staff Subject: Urgent Staff Announcement Importance: High
I promised to keep you informed about any major developments regarding (other company mebbe tryna buy us out).
Today we did receive a final proposal of (decentish sum of money I think but since our parent is British and I dont do the pence conversion thing too quickly I dunno) per share in cash for the entire company from them. Given our excellent results this year and the budgets for next year, we believe that this significantly undervalues (our company) and our excellent future prospects. The board has consequently rejected this offer and terminated all discussions with (other company).
(OTHER BOSSISH GUY) and I have every confidence that with more opportunities in front of us than ever, and the fabulous plans youve been presenting to us over the last few weeks that we will go from strength to strength. We look forward to building this great company even more ambitiously than before, exploiting the increased opportunities we have from our enlarged group and doing it ourselves so lets crack on!
Kind regards,

First, the figure must be 'known' to every ILxor, yet cannot be a member of our community. This one limitation alone reduces the possible candidates to 100% celebrities - entertainers, sports figures, politicians and their ilk. And only the most visible of these.
Next, we do not actually know any of these people. We know their reputations, their public faces, their public gaffes, their personas. It is all quite artificial and heavily mediated.
Although we may accurately enough know and admire their public accomplishments (or deplore them) our 'liking' for them can never have the slightest bit of depth or meaning. It only means we think they have a nice manner or a pleasant smile or something equally shallow - with pure imagination making up about 95% of the content of that 'liking'.
So, I nominate George W. Bush. He's one heckuva likeable guy, dontcha know? Folksy. Warm. Genuine. Not too stuck up. And not afraid of "hard work" either. I must have heard him praise "hard work" a million times! What's not to like?

THANKS FOR POINTING THAT ALL OUT

Sorry, gbx, but getting caught up with celebrities is like having lots and lots of imaginary friends. Although this does make for some fabulous imaginary tea parties!
More tea, Cameron? And do tell me all about this, uh, kabbala, Madonna! Ooops! Did I pronounce that correctly? Ving, you bad boy, you were laughing at me weren't you? Be that way, you lug, I love you anyway!
Sorry, gbx, but getting caught up with celebrities posting on ILx is like having lots and lots of imaginary friends.
