If something needs our attention on either board, post it here. Someone will probably be along shortly.

Here is the FAQ, if you want to know the rules we live by.

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(I just felt like locking a thread...)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

How about updating the Problem? link ath the bottom of the page? I don't know if anyone ever uses it, but still.

Herbstmute (Wintermute), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

good point!!

(unfortunately i have not the technical know-how)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

do we have a policy about stalking/harassment?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Harassment on-board would fall under personal attacks i.e. subject to deletion at the discretion of the attacked person.

If somebody started harassing or stalking somebody else off-board then the best thing to do would be let the mods know (privately if desired) so they can keep an eye on on-board behaviour, but otherwise do the usual things i.e. contact their ISP or the police as neccessary.

We have had one case of this when a former regular's ex showed up and was regularly hostile/threatening. The posts got deleted and he was told to stop it and go away (this was before we had banning abilities, now I think he'd probably be banned) - we also had broad community support against him, which helped us do everything publically.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 1 September 2003 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, can you have a word with Carey, who has not responded to private email, chat requests, and public requests, to stop following me around ILE in stalkerish fashion, posting creepy pictures after my every post? I do hope this can be resolved civilly. I have tried and given up.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Bizarre that this sort of activity has been mentioned as I have received a couple of bizarre, unsolicited and abusive emails from a person I can only presume picked up my details from here (this is the only forum I log into with this email address). I was reluctant to post about it initially as the person lives in the same city as I do. I even know where he works as I checked the email address. I was also concerned that some of my friends here might think it was a joke and post details about me that he might find interesting. I haven't replied to the emails but I was wondering if anyone new (and strange) had turned up on the boards in the last week or so? I don't know this man or why he's *chosen* me. I am tempted to forward his mails to his employer (extreme measure, I know) as he works for a big corporate and they don't look kindly on that sort of thing, I believe.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Do so Lara, if you feel bothered by them.

Also, if bizarre pictures constitute stalking then Dada has been stalking all of us and should be immediately banned. (where is he these days?)

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Orbit, I think if you are to make a case for moderators taking action about Carey, you need to post some links to at least several places where she has done this. And explain why they constitute action against you. Clips from films aren't per se immediately evil things, and following someone around on a message board is far from the same as real-life stalking.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin it is very creepy to have someone post after your every post the same thing. One picture which suggests that perhaps I will be killed in two weeks, or that I am a man, depending, and the other which is a picture of Kathy Bates, also suggesting murder. The same theme every time. Now, to someone, like me, who HAS been someone that has been the victim of attempted murder, once as a child, and once as an adult, this feels pretty freaky and abusive to me, especially when the person doing it will not respond to polite but firm requests to knock it off. If it continues past this point, I will go back and slog thru the threads, posting links, and will politely but firmly request that action be taken. These are not random images, like DaDa, but images linked to violence and murder.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey is not stalking you Orbit, nor is she wishing violence on you. She's just trying to wind you up and it's obviously working.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yes.

I find orbit's sexism quite confusing.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The first lot had nothing at all to do with murder, as far as I'm aware. And I didn't think they were all, by any means, posted by Carey. I don't see any physical threat there at all - the fact that you have been threatened in the past does not make these into threats at all. I assure you that if I did imagine there was any reasonable way of seeing them as threats aimed at you, I would take this very seriously, but I don't. Note that I am speaking for myself here, not all other moderators - but I'll be surprised if any do see them as threatening at all.

People dislike you, and are showing it, and it might be thought that they are taking this to places where it is not relevant or wanted (i.e. away from your own special hate thread and one or two other threads where the arguments have been held), but that is only a minor offence. I know that you are reading things into the pics that are not at all intended to be there.

Also, why just Carey? She has certainly not been alone in this picture posting.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So far:
DON'T THINK (pt. 2): Paste whatever is on your clipboard right now into the window and hit SUBMIT! (unknown)
Which do you prefer, funerals or weddings? (RJG)
This is the thread where you revel in doing some stupid little thing you've been putting off forever and now it's finally done. (carey)
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING RIGHT THIS INSTANT -- with 50% more cleaning power! (unknown)
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING RIGHT THIS INSTANT -- with 50% more cleaning power! (twice RJG, once unknown)
What's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you? (phil-two)

There are two more by Carey that I can't find, and it's not worth my time to look, but this is beyond ridiculous and I have politely said, "this is serious. I am a human being and I am offended. Stop." I have never shown this kind of disrespect to anyone on ILE. I have defended myself from direct attacks, but I have never done this creepy crap, and do you really want ILE to be known for this?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ILE is known for that.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, I dislike Ally. But do you see me trying to creep her out by posting ominous pictures after every post? And what would happen if I did that to Ally? Would your response be the same? Somehow I doubt it.

Why Carey? because she was fresh in my mind because the last two today were from her, and because I had tried email, chat and public requests for her to stop. Now that I cut and paste I see it is Carey and her clique, whatever.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

So Sam, after someone is told, hey this is serious, ILE is known for being assholes? Do you view yourself as an asshole? If so, can *I * say you are assholes?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I think everyone should stop being assholes.

lead the way, please, orbit.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I can be an asshole. Say whatever you like.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm an asshole and a bitch!!! *smooches*

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

First, I've seen you being very disrespectful towards all kinds of people all over the place, but I don't want to get into who started what rows and who has behaved worst, and I haven't been inclined to take action against you either. Secondly, you've been talking only of Carey, but only cited one example of her doing this, and referred to two others. That is not following you everywhere - you are exaggerating this colossally. I don't particularly want ILE known for all kinds of things that go on here, but I can't control that, and I don't see my role at all to be anything to do with protecting someone from pictures they don't like. There is no threatening intent, I am positive, and therefore I don't see there is a call for moderator action.

But I am off to bed now, so some other moderator will have to consider it from here on in.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, about the images, both are linked to violence:
Arnold comes out of the woman, and kills people.
Kathy Bates is a stalker who murders.
The accompanying text is meant to be ominous and it is threatening.

Regarding your comment about my past, I was not threatened, I am talking *attempt* not threat. I finding this truly appalling and quite a double standard.

And RJG it is quite clear that I am not the asshole here. I am not the one following people around and posting creepy things after their every post, now am I?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Martin.

mei (mei), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

So this clique : phil-two, RJG, and Carey anonymously or on their own are doing this, Martin or other moderator. I have never done anything that obnoxious to anyone. Tell me, if I post a photo of a giant asshole after everything YOU post on this board Martin, would you have the same opinion? That's all *I* have to say about it.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

to you is it clear you are not the asshole here. to me it is very clear that you are.

you are of the opinion that some things are creepy. I am of the opinion that some things are funny.

it is your belief that your interpretation of intent is correct. your belief is wrong.

crosspost.

you are very obnoxious.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

all the posts that everyone makes are visible to anyone who looks, google means that what ever anyone writes is visible to anyone who wishes to look. i post what i am happy for others to see, i can only presume others are happy to be known for what they have written. i sometimes wonder if anyone ever feels misinterpreted, but then i think is not that likely, otherwise they would write different things.

this is perhaps of no consequence to the issue at hand, but then i am only me, i am not ile, i dont feel misinterpreted. i have no wish to change anyone elses posts, i just make sure that i am happy with my own, and make sure i give out a representation that i feel happy with.

i have decided against deletion of the pictures. i do not believe they represent a threat of any description. the only pictures i will delete are ones that are unacceptable for those viewing at work.

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

an image that is open to interpretation is just that. i cannot remove such an image.

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Problem is though Orbit, that while I understand your frustration, as I too thought the joke was getting a bit old once Carey picked up on it, she's merely running with what someone (RJG?) started and it was never intended as anything more than a reference to Total Recall, no violence implied (the "two weeks" thing is the only line Arnold as the "fem-skin" thing could say, thats about it to that joke).

The reason it has continued to happen is because some people like winding people up, and you're letting them wind you up. I agree this sucks, but I learnt the hard way (not here, I might add) that letting it shit you only makes it worse, as that reaction is what they're after.

Just my 2c, I'm not a moderator so I can't do anything I'm afraid.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth I am not asking the images be removed.
I am asking that RJG, phil-two and Carey stop stalking me around ILE and posting them after everything I post.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

have you seen 'total recall'?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, no problem, there is no harm in asking them. the decision is entirely down to them. it is of no consequence except to the 4 of you

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Then Gareth, I assume no one will object if I start stalking people around ILE and posting ominous things after *their* every post.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys I know it is only a joke but it *is* getting a bit boring now... isnt it? Humour is fantastic but winding people up is too easy a target.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps orbit, i cannot speak for others, but, as far as i am concerned, you are entirely welcome to post images and 'ominous' things after my posts, if that is what you wish. it is of no consequence to me. others may have different opinions, you will have to ask them.

i will delete any unsuitable for work images, or information about a person they do not wish to be made public however

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

threatening does not = stupid, which is what most of these photo postings are

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

also threatening does not = unfunny, but if it did then ile would be the most terrifing place on the interweb

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ie, i have no interest in taking responsibility for anybody elses posts, they will have to do that themselves

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think those images are 'ominous' in any shape or form. The fact that you are absolutely convinced they are makes me think you're a bit paranoid.
If you posted similar images after every post of mine it wouldn't bother me at all. It's just an image on my computer screen
for christ's sake.

oops (Oops), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

RGJ you are a colossal asshole. Since Oops doesn't mind it, and you have a compulsive need to post pictures, why don't you post them after *his* every post? Then everyone will be happy.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can confirm that RJG is a colossal asshole. I don't think he's very threatening though.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i never thought either of those things were up for debate.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

: )

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

can one of my fellow mods with access see about putting this into the faq:

though it makes me glad i dont read ile that often!! i always think its weird when ppl are all, oh ilm is terrible but ile is where its motherfuckin AT!! cuz whenever i look at ile its like, ok, five threads of twee bullshit, thread of really tired pop culture references to the smurfs or transformers or some shit, TEN THREADS WITH TEXTBOOK INTERNET ARGUING BULLSHIT, would-be 'hilariously absurdist' nonsense threads, etc etc etc... at least on ilm ppl use big words to insult each other
-- trife

k, thanx

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Colossal? RJG isn't that big, lady, you've got your mind in the gutter.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the sooner the better on my request above, obviously, though i don't think anyone actually reads the faq

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey do you live in Costa Mesa? Would you like to say this to my face?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think some people read. and that is the whole problem.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

putting it in the faq would make it prescriptive rather than descriptive.
request denied.

modpostor (Oops), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

We already established that you are a non-threatening asshole, RJG, be quiet.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

why does that never work?

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

not clickin' on it, babe. sorry.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it's ok, la de da.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

you forgot the 'http://' part, Carey.

oops (Oops), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

that might work if i were blonde but i'm not that dumb.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the photos are after every post.. Honestly, I didn't see how there was even any association between someone posting random nonsense and your own postings, Orbit. I just read them as random photos, of which there are plenty around here. Actually I thought it was just somebody complaining in picture form about the California recall. I'm still not sure that it isn't - Carey, will you mind elucidating perhaps?

At the very least I think it is going too far to insist that an image be read in only one way. Stalking is something I take quite seriously - which is why claiming that posting pictures, and only posting pictures, and only posting pictures of which the meaning is ambiguous - sounds a like crying wolf, you know?

daria g (daria g), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Daria, you would have had to have been thread on the threads, and seen them move around as I did. it wasn't ambiguous at all in context.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.syberpunk.com/images/oolong/oolong.jpg

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey, copy the whole URL from the browser window and put an "i" in front, no space.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the original thread was about feminism, daria

nice try Carey, but my computer can't see your picture. Why don't you show it to me in person?

so my last few posts have been quite asshol-ish; so let me get this straight: when I am acting like all of you (making assholish comments) then things are fine. When I am not being an asshole, then I am being an asshole. This place is weird.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it won't post. it was a rabbit w/ pancakes on its head. imagine.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

stop imagining!!!

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

explain it to me, o non-threatening one.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you wouldn't believe me.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i will believe you.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

A note from your friendly neighborhood moderators:

If you would like to continue this discussion, please feel free to, but please do it on another thread (start one if you have to). Continuing this type of discussion on the mod threads makes them unwieldy and may obscure some of the other requests.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Orbit, this is getting really boring. Most people here have taken the time and the effort to find out how the ILX community works. That is after all what it is a community. You appear to have gone to no such trouble, half the time it appears that you don't even read a damn word other people write, or at least you read it as a personal attack.

You are potentially an interesting person, certainly a smart person, and could be of real value to the community here, but first you're going to have to learn how things work round here, we've been here far too long to bend out ways to suit you. You've got people's backs up here by blustering about and shouting and screaming like a spoilt child. This has a certain amusement value to this and this is one of the reasons why people are baiting you.

You just have to remember that all we have to go on here is the written word. expression and inflection are limited. Things can be read in different ways. No one here is all that precise with language.

One sad result of your behaviour is that you are driving some of my friends away from this board. People who, like me, have been posting since this board was first started over two years ago. If you want to stick around here, and it is worth it, you are going to have to change your attitude a little. We are not unbending either but we aren't going to turn the board through 180 degrees suit to suit you. Please don't ruin it for everyone else.

Ed (dali), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I started another thread in complying with moderators' wishes.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I request that the moderators lock and delete the OrbitII thread as its sole purpose is personal attack.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you have to assume? it makes an ass out of you.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i wont delete the thread until there is personal attack on it. the thread is there as a safety valve thread for you all to play on, instead of playing here, where you may obscure a request from someone else who has had personal details or suchlike posted against their wishes

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry gareth, I deleted it and replaced it with a more generic version.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll get to that problem? link thing.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, you know the way that the argument against killfiles was that it would make ILX unreadable? Now that you'ce put Calum in the killfile of everyone that's logged in, it turns out that it's true.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone use 12 foot lizards any more?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

andrew- I don't think it has made those threads unreadable bcz you know what they are abt from the title and he will only post once or twice in them. It is 'distorted' I guess.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

no-one?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean to discuss changes before implementing them? I understand 13footlizards is where it's at.

(julio : it's not only his threads: plenty of others have invisible posts followed by other's responses)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not what I mean.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

He is killfiled for EVERYONE? What's the point... if you feel like surely its best to just ban him and get it over and done with?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

12 ft lizards is still there.

ok andrew I haven't seen those.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not what I meant

? What did you mean then? I thought that was the purpose of 12footlizards, as a list for people who are interested in how the board runs (from a technical point of view).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

barring certain ips has amusing unwanted consquences

mark s (mark s), Friday, 5 September 2003 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 September 2003 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

that one could!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 5 September 2003 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

make them all, please.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

delete ILE!!!!!!

chris (chris), Friday, 5 September 2003 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I've not found that invisible-Calum has made any difference whatsoever to my reading of ILX, except for the positive differences of i) not reading Calum's posts, ii) not seeing threads derailed because of people taking Calum's bait.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 5 September 2003 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

How come, if Calum really is in LA, he's still got the same IP?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 5 September 2003 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Odd (maybe) techical problem. When I go to the 'Users' list, I show-up, but my name is not hyperlinked to the userinfo page and my website address does not appear. I tried to fix this on the 'Settings' page, but when I make any changes and then try to save them, I receive the following error:

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/ilx/pubhtml/postuserinfo.php on line 108

Further down the page it tells me that it is 'Saving Changes ...' and then 'Success!' 'Your new settings are now saved in the database.'

However, the information still does not show on the 'Active Users' page, but does show when someone clicks on the hyperlink of my name after a posting. Oddly, some changes are saved (such as changing the time zone in which I am posting from).

Any ideas?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 6 September 2003 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG is my personal hero. Can you keep talking about him please? I'm putting together a dossier...

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 7 September 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Did I miss much?

He is killfiled for EVERYONE? What's the point... if you feel like surely its best to just ban him and get it over and done with?

Because unlike "sp00ner", he was using a dynamic ip, we couldn't ban him without hitting lots of other users. Spo00er was using a very teeny tiny one and we weren't worried. I don't know the details of how this was done though.

IPOW, someone will look into it. Thanks for bringing it up.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you Mr. Noodles. It's not urgent *smile*

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

This might be a prob at my end (DNS playing up or something) but I'm getting very odd 404 errors in ILM for some freehosting site, that go away on a reload. Anyone else getting this?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this when trying to view a certain thread or just the new answers?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

If its when trying to view certain threads, its possible someone inserted a tag they shouldn't have. Give us links to the threads in questions and any of the moderators who knows what to look for can check for you.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah its the new answers page, ie:

And only that, and only twice so far. I'm on a funny VPDN dialup so it is entirely possible it is DNS fucking up at my end, but I cant be sure.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, it just did it again (4th time now - maybe it is just me, as no one else has said anything?)

Anyway it seems to "appear" to go to this site:

http://free.hostdepartment.com/

to their 404 page - strangely, the links at the top are their own, but hover over the bottom terms of svce link and it tries to go to ilx.wh3rd.net/somefilethatdoesntexist.html

Ive included screenshots on my website if anyone (Andrew in particular I'm thinking) is interested. I do hope its just some weird issue my end and not some dodgy DNS pirate.

http://www.memorygongs.com/4041.jpg
http://www.memorygongs.com/4042.jpg

(theyre both rather large sorry)

Personally I dont mind, it goes back to normal the moment I reload, but it is concerning from a DNS viewpoint...

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

test

mr noodles, Monday, 8 September 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the most pathetic thing I've ever seen.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce -- you've got some spyware issues. Go and download AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy (both are free and easy to find). Run 'em and delete the programs they tell you to. If that doesn't do it, go look at http://cexx.org -- those fine folks are very helpful with nasty spyware problems and will talk you through any necessary fixes.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I do? FUCK, I suspected I might. Odd thing is tho, the above only happens on LIX, no other pages.. but yeah i considered that, thanks Ill look into it :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Both programs are really worth having on your machine. I second that emotion!

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

After the unexpected revival of one of the sequence of original 9/11 threads, a number of posters felt that it and the remaining threads should be locked down. I happen to agree and I have done that with the whole sequence, ten in total. This is to note that all and any discussion about this should occur either here or via the mods list. I have not intended this as a permanent change but if all agree that it's the best decision then it can become that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

This isn't really a shouty thing; more something that came to mind after Ned locked the 9/11 thread (which, like I said, I think is a good idea). I'm fairly sure I've seen this mentioned before, but could there/should there be a page from which specific threads are always accessible, regardless of whether or not they're on New Answers? There's always the possibility of searching, yes, but since we're trying to cut down on that to be nice to Andrew's server ...

The current Shout for the Moderator thread would be a sensible one to have there. Things like the 9/11 threads -- threads which have been locked but not for "shut the fuck up" reasons -- would make sense to me, too.

(Of course, if everyone started talking about which threads to include, everyone would go searching for them, and then boom.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't quite follow, Tep, but if you're asking after a general categories page, it does exist -- on the New Questions page, below the current questions themselves, you'll find an overall organization both by month and general categories along with specific breakdowns. Or are you asking for something else?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I remembered the categories as soon as I posted, but that's not quite I mean: I mean a hall of fame, I guess, although that doesn't have exactly the same connotation. "Useful"/historic/whatever-adjective-fits threads that are likely to be searched for, or -- maybe more importantly -- people might not think to search for.

Maybe the categories cover that well enough, though.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Tep's asking for like a bookmarked threads page. Could include intro yrselves, picture threads, etc.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, that. I hadn't thought of those specifically, but they'd make sense.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

How about a Greatest Hits thread.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd vote for both a greatest hits page and sam's bookmark page.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

more a shout out to martin/andrew etc. The Log/referrals page shows Most Popular Referrals, and the most popular is only 2 hits. were lots of referral hits lost in the recent corruption hoo-ha, or is the code not reading the full table? Months ago I can recall referrals from freakytrigger were way higher than this, apart from any of the other blogs linking to ilx

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

A good opportunity to apologise: I was just starting to get the hang of that php and MySQL stuff when these eye problems hit. I've not found any time to get any farther since then, and I guess that will continue to be the case while my reading capabilities are limited or gone some of the time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

No worries Martin.

I want to remind everyone that after years (aeons in lizard time) of sterling service to the board Mark S is taking a moderating break to write his book, so please DON'T bug him about anything admin-related.

If you're planning to bug me about something by email rather than this thread, you can use this address (the only other one that'll reach me is my work address) but please mark any emails ILX ADMIN so the other people with access to the account don't read them. Ta!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone fix thread title it's bugging the hell out of me. Deaths are not commensurable!

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, that's this thread title.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I've taken out the 'fuck'. That is a good sentence.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Um. Thank you Martin. It still kinda rankles though, but yeah thanks.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could find Xgau's Lennon obit. I went through my files, but to no avail.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 13 September 2003 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This is mildly annoying: in Safari 1.0 when I click away from ilx to another non-ilx site (Freaky Trigger say) then click back, the log-in add-ons - red for unread messages, full email addresses- stop being visible. I guess it logs out, or blocks the cookie flow or something.

(But if I close Safari and open it again, I'm automatically logged in again w/o having to do anything like actuall re-log-in)

mark s (but it's telling this name is "reserved" - ie by ME), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

''when I click away from ilx to another non-ilx site (Freaky Trigger say)''

how dare you click away to non-ilx sites?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, there was a fix for this problem way back when.

there are two things one can do. one is to change the cookie acceptance setting, in the security tab of the preference to 'Accept cookies: Always"

or log in to www.ilxor.com and ilx.wh3rd.net (the same site i know but Safari recognises them as two different sites and won't accept cookies from what you didn't surf to)

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ed i think it's that last one, apparently if i click away AGAIN to radio free narnia and back, then i get my cookies back!!

(ie both times i am returning to ilx via links - i guess i just need to log in for both url forms of ilx...)

(btw did you get my email, i think the download completed but when i typed in that pyslsk stuff you wrote out for me it said i needed "ogg vorbis" related stuff!!)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

have replied with a different version of slsk, i.e the one that works on my computer in the absence of the ogg stuff.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark: I had that same problem at first. Eventually cookies were set for all permutations and it works like a charm now.

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 13 September 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Is ilxor.com ultra-slow for anyone else, or is it just me? It's been having to "think" for about five minutes before it displays a page all day today.

Dan I., Sunday, 14 September 2003 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

For me, too -- I thought it was related to my ISP problems.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 14 September 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, but now it's not slow anymore. Um, carry on then, I guess.

Dan I., Sunday, 14 September 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

can a mod delete my c.v from the 'Don't think, paste the contents from your clipboard" thread? There is much personal info there.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone has done this, before any more mods spend time tracking it down as I just did...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

whoops!

RJG (RJG), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

And orbit, why did you just happen to have your c.v. in your clipboard?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Re ultra-slowness - yes. I've used five separate computers in the last week and that's five monitors covered in flecks of spittle. Like, WTF? (Incidentally, I know nothing about the work involved in these sites, I've just come to bitch and moan)

dave q, Monday, 15 September 2003 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Please can someone mark this thread as not safe for work.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Its all good now.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks very much for the link, makes life super good.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sorry about that, Martin, but I didn't indicate "done" because I couldn't find it either and instead deleted a link to a board about gooseberries and then got confused and gave up.)

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 18 September 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This needs to be noted as not safe for work, as much as my coworkers enjoyed seeing a gigantic photo of tobey maguire's penis.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That picture is now a link; the thread is safe for work once more!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 September 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, though, is that really Tobey Maguire? Who knew?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - I totally knew if I invoked the pussy posse someone would post that pic! my work here is done

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 18 September 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Your work isn't done until I figure out the mystery behind Tobey Maguire's surprisingly large penis, mister.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

suddenly i feel much better about myself.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 September 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

1) Problem link at the bottom of most pages now points here.
2) Administrators can now be added without going under the hood. Even bettter, when you do add/update an administrator it no longer returns back an erroneous error message.

Aside from working on newanswers page/search and world domination what else were we supposed to fix?

Bumpity-Bump:

Any ideas?

Er, I just went through and deleted all of my info under 'settings' (well, those that I was allowed to delete) and those changes took effect. But when I went back in and re-entered the information for my website and such, it still isn't showing-up under the 'Users' link. Any other ideas?

Could someone please delete my not-at-all-libelous-but-best-not-to-speculate post on this thread:

wtf? "EIGHT PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS FACE RAPE INQUIRY"

Thanks.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This isn't really a problem, but more of a weird thing that happens. When I'm browsing the New Answers, and I open a thread, and then hit the back button, usually it just goes back to the New Answers thread the way it was when I had it open before. But sometimes, when I hit back, it automatically refreshes the New Answers list, which makes it take a little longer. There doesn't seem to be any reason for why this happens or doesn't happen. Does this happen to anyone else? Like I said, it's not really a problem, but I'm just not sure why it's happening.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Similar things happen to me, but I think it's to do with the way that the Internet Explorer cache works.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

a very tiny thing, but maybe of interest: my post here should have trackback pinged the site I linked to (it's worked in the past to external sites). Has someone disabled this function? It's a nice way to bring new people into the site, if we're into that.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

see the tracklink works internally there!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Similar things happen to me, but I think it's to do with the way that the Internet Explorer cache works.

Or with the way New Answers page works. One and/or the other.

Re tracklink:
I don't know why we have it. It doesn't always work even for ilx URLs . I should go look for the features thread G introduced it on before I attempt to fix it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Pls can someone just make sure the 'premiership footballers...' thread is made safe again. Not sure if ppl should have logged out & I inadvertantly put his name.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracklink is a grebt feature, but the vague protocol means that some sites don't inter-operate all that well - try it with a site that it HAS worked with in the past, like the moveable type site that graham initially linked to.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Works with any of the thread.php pages, but linking to the log, faq or search causes the same thing.
But what does it actually do Alan?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Note to self:
Indexing/Locking threads is still on drugs.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Would it be an idea to get rid of the premiership thread? I mean, I don't want us to be closed down or anything! (or am i getting paranoid?)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd have said you were getting paranoid, and that we know how to keep a cool head, but a quick glance at the thread suggests I'm wrong. Dr. C, for shame!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, the below thread on ILM (about some sixteen posts in or so) --

POV: ILM posters who only click on certain threads to be an asshat and diss the artists being discussed

-- makes public, accidentally, the *full* e-mail addresses of the top 50 posters on ilm statcock.

I suspect that most these fifty posters may not be too happy 'bout this.
Would a mod take a look at that, please!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That happens every bloody month on ILM!! Can we just lock out anyone from actually looking at the top 50 posters or something cos this is at least the forth time I remember seeing someone do that. Or put a warning on top of page, PLEASE DO NOT COPY PASTE THIS LIST YOU ASSHATS AS IT BROADCASTS EMAILS TO GOOGLE INDEXING.

Perhaps we should clarify that there is no duty rota - whichever of us are around look at this thread and take action (or not). Sometimes ten of us might be online at the same time, sometimes none of us.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect you'd have to clarify what "duty rota" means (though I can figure it out from context).

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 2 October 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the older sister of Nino Rota.

Herbstmute (Wintermute), Friday, 3 October 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I just dropped a couple of examples of c*l*m's (or one of his mates') dumbass trolling in the dumper. just fyi like. the ones i didn't dump, it was b/c other people had turned them into "threads". Probably i should junk them as well but meh.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 4 October 2003 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i noticed that a calum thread just got deleted, and i'm grateful. but seriously, the vast amount of bullshit lookist sexist threads on here at the moment is making me want to leave: and i've never before wanted to leave ilx. the "skinny women are evil" thread is depressing me, also the "girls with fat asses and no tits" thread. kenan's thread about women wanting to be dominated upset me too, but there was thoughtful debate on it at least.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 5 October 2003 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah and Kate's threads and Ally posting pics of her with her tits hanging out are doing a lot for female liberation on ILX as well aren't they?

Mr C, Sunday, 5 October 2003 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

you really are stupid, aren't you?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 5 October 2003 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ts: a board that destroyed itself because it hated society vs. a board that destroyed itself because it WAS society.

(honest damn question -- i go back and forth)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the latter (bang vs. whimper)

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've already emailed several moderators but the owner of ILX will be getting a call and a possible lawyer's letter if a certain post by a certain ILMer who stalks me around the internet and sends me countless spam mail every day because he has no job, social life or anything to do keeps is not removed.

superc, Sunday, 5 October 2003 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

This is not the place for me to do so but I completely echo Lurex's sentiment.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 5 October 2003 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Well excuse me, but unless you experience the wretched creep who spends his spare time hunting out information about me online (how sad is that?), emailing me spam and basically acting like a cunt I don't think you can comment. I have already said to James Blount that I have tracked spam mail down to his ISP (or rather his home email address) and I find his behaviour petty and pathetic as well as seriously worrying and I am educated enough to know and qualified enough to state that he has serious mental issues. He's obsessed by me idicated by how much free time he spends on me, and the fact he has no social life, future or anything to do off-line. He needs some real friends.

And he keeps stealing my name - such is the energy he is willing to put into this. Whenever I create a name he steals it. Christ, has he no life? At all?

Superbc, Sunday, 5 October 2003 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Calum, you cant have proof from any ISP that it is Blount that signed you up for spam. The simple reason for this, is that it isn't Blount.

1. There is no porn spam, you have made it up
2. Even if there is, its a consequence of having a hotmail account, it is not because of this board
3. Even if it is because of this board, no one can be responsible for the actions of lurkers, of which there are many, (if i went on the Outkast message board one day and spammed every single person on there, are their moderators responsible for that?
4. I dont care

As a moderator on this board, i have looked into your case, and have decided against doing anything about it. I am afraid your case is without merit. You are welcome to stay on the board, but i am afraid your pompous bluster regarding lawyers will be taken just as that, bluster. If you are going to go and involve lawyers, please do so, bleating on about it here is serving no purpose. Action, not words, ok?

I suggest you continue with low level posts about 'fat birds' and continue to 'wind people up' because thats kind of, like, you know, clever, in a "exposing liberals for the pc fascists they really are" kind of way. its a tough job and i dont think anyone else is up to that role here. Perhaps you can throw in a few references to Ally, and how stupid you think she is. I won't delete those either, i think they should stay, i have no intention of clearing up after you.

Either stay on this forum, or leave this forum, whatever, it is of no consequence either way, but, please, don't bleat on about lawyers, it makes you look pompous, and it certainly isnt making any of the moderators here do anything about it

If you have issues with Blount, please take it up in email with him, lets lessen the clutter here. Thank you for your time

g-kiosk, Sunday, 5 October 2003 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I just ask at this juncture what happened to the, for want of a better word, "filter"? People are taking the bait again, and it is getting annoying.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 5 October 2003 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Though i should add, it might be worth trying the other moderators, one of them might be more sympathetic to your case, though if they havent done anything about it yet, it seems a little unlikely

good luck with it, i hope things turn out better for you soon

g-kiosk, Sunday, 5 October 2003 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

T, g?

Ed (dali), Sunday, 5 October 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

There was an easy way to get round the filter. We all thought it might keep C. quiet for a few weeks until he worked it out: as it was it lasted several months.

The thread with personal info on it has been deleted by me: tut tut naughty poster. FWIW C's lawyer is as frightening as the tooth fairy or monsters under the bed, but 'don't post personal details' is a ground rule of ILX.

Pretty much the only way to stop wreckers and trolls posting to a web-board is to make it so that only people who are logged in can post, I think. This would be an enormous change to the way ILX works though and something I'd want 'the community' to decide on without pushing from the mods.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 5 October 2003 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This is not the place for me to do so but I completely echo Lurex's sentiment.

I disagree that this is not a place for you to echo di's sentiment. I agree w/di's sentiment very strongly. Di is one of the best and smartest posters here i think.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Sunday, 5 October 2003 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Cute little animation

Herbstmute (Wintermute), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I just locked this thread and am strongly tempted to just delete it. What are folks' thoughts?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno. i mean there are plenty of sex threads on ilx, and im not against that, but if that particular thread becomes a google thread, then well it could lead to ilx becoming a sex board. so maybe delete it.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Delete it if you want, but I don't find anything inherently sexist or abusive in the question.

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course it's not a sexist thread (there are male porn star). It was a good question. Everybody has a favorite porn star.

-Bruno, Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldnt say its sexist. it might just attract traffic thru google that ilx might be better without though.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

otm

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. Go ahead and delete it.
I suspect it might become very scary google bait.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

could it be given a meta no bots tag? (Not that I'd be averse to deleting the thread, but I don't feel its worse than a lot of thread, I won't look at it again, i have no opinions on the suject)

Ed (dali), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah. Better off dead. There was no way I could phrase the question I was trying to ask without it sounding

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

oops.
Nah. Better off dead. There was no way I could phrase the question I was trying to ask without it sounding tacky or crass.

-Bruno, Sunday, 5 October 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Thread deleted as requested. At the very least it was poorly timed to start such a thread given the return of C***m.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. Yes, this is true.
But is "calstar" the real deal or just another Calum clone?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

why has the *** filter stopped working? calstar ought not to have go through

Ed (dali), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

delete last post if appropriate

Ed (dali), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, I probably would have told Custos to fuck off if it had been a thread about bluebells or the amateur golf circuit -- it was just one of those things that was bound to happen.

Nicolars (Nicole), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Why all the hate, Nicolars?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 6 October 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

If someone could delete all the dumb formatting mistakes I just made posting to the ILX if they mated thread that would be excellent. I guess just fix the first post and then delete the rest? Thank you.

TOMBOT, Monday, 6 October 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ON an interesting note to some, we have just shy of 200K refferals in the table. I guess I'll put that on my plate of things to remeber I should be doing other then Vice City.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 6 October 2003 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I couldn't really help "I'm Passing Open Windows" tonight since that page is a mess.
BUT...
Moderators can now turn on and off indexing on a thread without it acting up. Though I should check to see if that actually does anything besides putting a nice value in the threads table.

PS: You may notice some funky ilxor misfunctionings in the next little while. Fear not, regular bickering will resume as normal.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

possibly related, or posisbly just me, but my title bar in IE says "Inserting Message..." whatever ILX page i'm on. not a biggie, but thought you'd like to know :)

OK posted from the thread that was just deleted called "Why are my threads being deleted" or something like that:

Is anyone going to, like, answer this question though? Cos I noticed it about 14 times today and I don't exactly see what was so wrong with any of the threads being deleted (they're certainly not WORSE than a lot of threads and comments that are allowed).

Yeah?

could someone do a traceroute on the IP for this post and see if it comes up as Mill Valley, CA or something similar?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

woah - surely not the josh davis?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Gygax-
www.arin.net, type any IP address (if you have it) into the search box in the top right & it will tell you what domain it belongs to, and any domain administration stuff for that one. Err, I guess you might be asking for the IP address, though- I have no clue how to make ilx show you the IP address behind a post...

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

knowing where an IP belongs (what ISP etc) isnt going to neccesarily give a geographical location - traceroute is more accurate for that (though still only if they name routers helpfully, etc). Just a BTW :)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know how to do a traceroute Gygax. The Arin thing suggests it's not coming from California.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Skottie, Friday, 10 October 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a thread started earlier today called something like, "Why you will never have children?" I wrote some dopey reply, hit submit, and the message was 'Thread not found'. The whole thread had disappeared. What was that about?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 11 October 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

What the heck happened to the "Why do Americans like Baseball" thread?! There were like 70 posts to it!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 11 October 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah wtf? It had transcended it's trollness after a dozen posts.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 11 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That is total fucking bullshit. I spent five minutes of my valuable time transcribing a quote from a book! It had turned into a cool discussion. Then the whole thread disappears, without even a post to the "Moderators shout at you" thread?

Moderators - fucking answer us.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 11 October 2003 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The short answer is C*lum, Fugs and the rest of his aliases isn't worth our time posting about.

But it could have well been me since I've been the one deleting the most of his threads. Its unfortunate that you feel you've lost something but we currently don't have a perfect way of dealing with him.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What, has this turned into a personal vendetta against him? There wasn't anything wrong with that baseball thread. Was there? Did I miss something?

Deleting everything he posts and every thread he starts isn't going to get rid of him, I don't think, it'll just make him more determined to figure out how to outsmart the mods.

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The short answer is C*lum, Fugs and the rest of his aliases isn't worth our time posting about.

What the fuck does this even mean? "Our" time? A TON of regular ILX contributors posted to that thread! There were like SEVENTY POSTS!!

And you just fucking waltz in and delete it? That is total fucking bullshit. I demand that your moderator privileges be revoked.

I don't give a frog's fat ass if Calum or Tony Blair started the thread. It wasn't a trollish question, he simply asked why Americans liked baseball. Then, ILX, being comprised of adults as we are, turned it into an interesting discussion to which a large number of posters felt compelled to contribute their thoughts.

And you just waltzed in, in the middle of the night like a rat, and deleted the whole fucking thing. No post to the "Moderators shout at You" thread, nothing.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Diamond, I understand why you're upset, but obviously he didn't intentionally delete a good thread. Considering the amount of time he's donated to work on the tech side of ilx, I think you could be a little more charitable in your assesments.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 11 October 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 11 October 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Diamond, I don't even know if its me. Check your history, find the thread number and check it here: http://www.ilxor.com/adminlog.php?board=1
Any thread deletion by anyone in the past week on both boards is him.

We've been trying various things for the 6 monthes or so with this wanker. Its been an ongoing email discussion amoung the moderators for the past month or so. He just loves sending Ned, Martin and others emails accusing usually Blount of everything short of WW1.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 11 October 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 12 October 2003 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

3:48 PM, 11 Oct 03 Thread 3903941 deleted by Mr Noodles

That was the baseball thread. In my opinion it was an example of how best to deal with any trollish question, take the discussion above him where other people are engaged but the troll loses interest because there's no name-calling, fighting, or attention directed at them.

Deleting the thread was a bad call.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 12 October 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, well I seem to have rectified one problem with the "Threadkillah!!" thread, but now *somebody* has decided to inflict yet *another* problem with this thread. Is this totally something the mods should be worried about, or should this thread be left alone?

Oh yeah, and I tried to rectify the same problem that was evident with the original "Threadkillah!!" thread on the ThreadKillah II!!!!!!! thread, but I just couldn't. I kept on getting an error message when I hit "Enter" to submit my message.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 12 October 2003 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 12 October 2003 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

In regards to ThreadKillah II, don't worry about it, it's supposed to be like that. Nothing to worry about but, you probably can't post to it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 12 October 2003 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Just wanted to clear a few things up. I didn't delete that baseball thread knowing there was a growing collection of posts to it. That was a mistake I made and I'm sorry. This is not me acting on my own. Its something that the moderators felt we finally had to resort to.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 12 October 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

dada does have a girlfriend. But seriously, can this be discussed for other threads as well? A picture is like caps-lock to the tenth power; it doesn't just shout, it uses a megaphone. No one can read everything on ILX. Many people read judiciously. A picture, especially a large one, leaves you no choice whether or not to pay attention to someone's post. Would anyone stand for such in-your-face aggression in real conversation? Why should it be tolerated in this format?

Of course, dada is not the only person to post pictures. Doing so is not objectionable on picture threads. And it is tolerated elsewhere, even where the picture is only a joke, presumably because we rely on posters to use discretion. But we evidently cannot expect such discretion from dada.

Furthermore, there is no content to his picture-posting, other than illustrating the powers of google image search (it certainly cramps my style to see this claimed as "dada" though I suppose that's not a moderation-level complaint). I assume that we wouldn't tolerate the bandwidth usage of people who repeatedly post a single character to multiple threads? Why should such narcissism be tolerated where far more bandwidth is used?

A rejoinder would be that few people would object to a google-image-search thread, so perhaps dada's posts should be seen as merely off-topic, and appropriate because there would be no thread that would provide a good home for them (a google image search thread wouldn't have the text that provides the source for dada's posts), but they are off-topic pictures instead of text, and to my mind do not suggest any further subjects for discussion. If they were art, or a legitimate "text", wouldn't, say, Momus have "engaged" them by now?

avo-cat, Sunday, 12 October 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If you adjust yr settings then all pictures can be turned into links, which you'll only see if you click onto 'em. Best thing I ever did on ILM

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 12 October 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be a good point if I objected to pictures generally, but I don't. I probably enjoy at least 1/3 or 1/2 of the images on ILX, if not far more, and having to click on a link likely would eliminate the surprise (a critical element of humor or delight) of viewing many images. So the response tells me to lump it. Which may be the appropriate response; I may be disingenuous about the role of my non-moderation-level objections. I'm not saying dada should be banned or anything. But I find it hard to explain why a community voice and exercise of authority should be used to speak to him and correct his actions by the intermediate step of converting a picture to a link on this thread but not on any other. Is there a moderator consensus about allowable speech content/format/volume? Maybe I'm arguing for dada here.

avo-cat, Sunday, 12 October 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

dada is the 'girolama savonarola', right?

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 12 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Not quite, but you are indeed sniffing in the right direction. ;)

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 12 October 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It was recently pointed out to me that there is a noimage setting for threads in the database. I haven't had time to look into a) what it does b) how close it is to working.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 12 October 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Would anyone stand for such in-your-face aggression in real conversation? Why should it be tolerated in this format?

I get your analogy, but I don't think it's aggression, really. The Dada schtick just reminds me of a lot of the jokes that're funny in third grade: mindless repetition and volume and a lot of giggling. It's cute once or twice or if you're drunk, and then it isn't. For a very, very long time. There're a lot of things that're like that, but Dada isn't very good about keeping it to one time -- when he posts, he tends to do so in batches.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 12 October 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Whether they are grounds for deletion of the pics is up to the moderators, but I see this as deliberate assholism, given the context of the thread. Can we at least change them to links?

I think the pictures of dead/decomposing cats on the kitty thread are offensive.

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

More of a tech question than a moderator question, but: What makes ILX slow down around the middle of the day? Is it just the more people that get on ILX and are opening threads and posting, the slower it gets? I'm guessing that's what it is, since my connection is fine in the AM and evening but gets stuck from like 11:00 until 2:00 or 3:00. But if this was the case, wouldn't it slow down for everyone? It seems like other people are still posting while I can't get in to the New Answers. Am I just being paranoid?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

also, why is it that i can't see ilx from my computer, but suzy's, in the next room, can.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

NA: For some reason the ilx server no longer limits the number of simultaneous connections. This means instead of blocking additional workload with the TURN BACK YOU POXY FULE sign, it just allows a massive queue to build up, which it has no choice but to work through, even if people click the stop button, click refresh, or turn off their computer and do something else. When someone clicks "Submit" during a busy period, the request eventually gets to the front of the queue, even though the site is otherwise mostly inaccessable.

(The other effect of this is that if you do try to load a page, it will eventually arrive. Clicking stop and refresh just puts you further back in the queue, without cancelling your original request, evene though you'll never see the result)

Ed: Suzy doesn't use the unread thingy, does she?

grraham, Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

suzy uses no extended features but the blockage appears to be gone.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

approximatly 112% accurate.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 16 October 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

kate (kate), Friday, 17 October 2003 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"indexing off" I just tried it on a thread, and it locked the thread? I thought it just removed a thread from google indexing. what is it for, exactly?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that (stopping search engine indexing), but the function to toggle it on/off might not be working well. I think Zac said he was looking at fixing that.

the list of threads in newanswers can't show any newly created threads as the threadid doesn't exist anywhere in the "newanswerscache" table. This table is usually recreated every 2 mins, but all the time shifting shenanigans means the server thinks it was most recently recreated tomorrow, which is sufficiently recent not to make it again.

mr noodles... because if a thread is started by a spammer/email miner, an inoccuous reply to something off topic still generates a valid email addy response to the creator of the thread.

if there was such an "email response" identifier on threads, i would be more eager to not include my real email address, esp. in the case of a non-regular starting a thread.

Partly because I just don't want to disrupt ILE and re-open old wounds, and partly because I don't want to rattle or upset myself when otherwise things are going so well, and partly because I don't want to give other people the satisfaction of thinking that I still care, when really, honestly I haven't thought about it in ages when it's not in my face on ILE.

Really, I should just to be strong and ignore it and let the thread go away. It's not a Momus thread, BTW.

Don't worry, I'm doing my best to ignore it, though just be forewarned to keep an eye on it and smack me if I can't resist temptation, but I'm too busy cracking myself up over Nigel Spivey and the Richard Aiy Aiy Aiy fanclub anyway.

Alisa you can't really shrink a picture unless you are hosting it on a server of your own. In which case you need to make it smaller.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

you can resize it in the html but, yes, you should just resize the file your post links to.

Could I beg on bended knee once again for a kind moderator to delete the thread called "I'm very fond of you"?

"I'm very fond of you"

The person in question is now very likely to see it and I may have to kill myself. Sorry.
