What's Good On ILM?

I read all but a few ILE threads, but I don't have the time for that on ILM too. Nor the interest in a lot of cases. But I know there must be great stuff there, threads that become fascinating, great individual posts (it bothers me a little that I am undoubtedly missing some prime Sinkah and Kogan stuff, for instance), hilarious exchanges and all that. Obviously some stuff might show up in the 'posts that made you laugh' thread, but I want those who spend lots of time on ILM to let us (or just me) know where I'm missing something special. A link and a reason for the recommendation would be good. (I will of course ignore ones from Calum saying "Here's a top thread where I go on about women repulsing me.")

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

when was the precise moment that Techno became dated?

Try that one, it's pretty interesting I found.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Most criminally unsung old-school & new-school hip-hop and R&B producers

Frank Kogan & Shasha Frere-Jones et al gettin' into it rather seriously

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bang! thread has its moments but it's obscured mostly by a) stupid fighting (that's not even entertaining; apart from Suzy/Kate) and b) being a talkshop/market research for Bang!. It also has people boasting about being professional proof readers (!!! boasting!!!) for some reason.

The 'techno' thread is really interesting too.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

rockist scientist's oum oom umm thread just keeps on giving!!

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i just love the title!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i second the om thread. it keeps getting revived and the discussion is v interesting. The bang! thread is v funny.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I know welfare mothers, so of course I can appreciate the *realness* of the Bang! thread!

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I read the techno thread. LOts of top Geir, such as:

"I would say you have a very limited approach."

"Btw. dancing sucks. Good music should be enjoyed sitting, actively listening to it." (A top comment to make on a thread about dance music.)

but surely all the pop music now is electronic?
"Not the truly good pop music. Coldplay aren't electronic, Travis aren't electronic. Oasis aren't electronic. Crowded House weren't electronic."

But (and this is me again) the weirdest thing about that thread is how many people on it have this really tight aesthetic, and they are butting up against one another with no hope of real communication. Geir is the most bizarre and extreme example, but Ronan has his only strict and prescriptive aesthetic. I love Ronan's writing when he is enthusing about records he loves, but this is less fun.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I ain't starting on a 4000-post thread without stronger recommendation than the Bang one is currently getting. I will read the unsung R&B producers one. (Ha, I'm acting as if this is just for my benefit, just because I asked the question.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah you're much better with the R&B thread but it's really deep in an 'I feel extremely out of my depth' here kinda way. If you're not clued in it's hard going.

The Bang! thread I think is of limited interest to a) people who haven't read Bang! a) people who aren't too fussed about in-print music writing c) people who a soul d) people who think Popular is the greatest TV program in the world that I ever just watched ('cos it is!).

(Martin, I'll root about in the archives and post a link here to one or two of my favourite old threads that need reviving. Pinefox's Smiths one for example.)

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the GNFingR OPX thread.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've rather been avoiding any OP/PO threads for a long time, to be honest.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The guava and cheese pastries are delicious.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(it bothers me a little that I am undoubtedly missing some prime Sinkah and Kogan stuff, for instance)

you can use ilm search to check on whether particular people have been posting, of course (not that i ever would ahem ahem ahem).

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 5 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I guess I could search for all Kogan and Sinkah posts - but they were just examples. Do I also search every day/week for all Tim F, Jerry the Nipper, Tom Ewing, Anna F posts? Where does this end?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah those ones are all rubbish, Martin. But I'll teach you how to spell my name, if you want.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously I already search daily for all your posts, David!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Just like I programmed you.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've been enjoying the Hongro challenge. He thinks Nik Kershaw is better than Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, probably put together if that's the kind of thing you fancy trying out.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 6 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Revive because there are some long threads that look as if they might be a) interesting discussions of such things as misogyny, b) full of stupid comments about sexism, c) sprinkled with the kind of misogyny that maybe a moderator should read, or maybe all three. And besides, what I said at the top of this thread is still true so I'm interested in fresh recommendations. (I've lost faith in ILM even more, and haven't even marked a couple of recent deaths, because I was sort of despairing at the lack of interest in one I started a little while ago. I am torn between wanting to note, say, George Faith's passing, and not wanting to create the indignity of an obit thread that everyone ignores.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Film Criticism vs Music Criticism is good but difficult going. (I think as a rule-of-thumb all the 'misogyny' threads are rub. Also search: where jess posts an excellent Frank Kogan article on the 'Jism: Academic Bullshit' thread, near the bottom.)

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I posted some stuff on the "pox: disco" thread that I thought was good, though perhaps a little Vice-magaziney. There are other golden contributions there. We could, however, use your input, Martin!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I get exasperated with thread titles like that. We get (to exaggerate only slightly) POX Dinosaur Jr or Foo Fighters, then POX All Black Music Ever. I'll take a look though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ilm seems especially weird lately.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

um, its the same as usual actually.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Village Voice/DC C. Paper writer on "vocal complexity" in rap & Prefuse 73 vs. Kogan, Frere-Jones take on production is pretty excellent.

That's it! The only ism I want to come out of your mouths is jism. Overacademic Bullshit Must Die. has mutated pretty fast (& there's some really good stuff near the bottom, esp. the Kogan essay which would be right up yr alley, Martin.

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you'd like to hear me prattling on on doom-e's prog-rock thread, as well. Shambling (mis)insights.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"I get exasperated with thread titles like that. We get (to exaggerate only slightly) POX Dinosaur Jr or Foo Fighters, then POX All Black Music Ever. I'll take a look though. "

i started the pox disco thread because i don't know very much about disco, and would like to know more
i'm sorry if that exasperates you,but i wasn't going to pretend that i know about something if i don't,and since i know there are lots of people on ilm who do know a lot about it i though it'd be a good place to get some recommendations...

robin (robin), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry that was vague. I guess I mean that it seems like there are a lot of threads started about the same sort of things, and mainly negative things like misogny or that kind of thing. I wish there were more threads about how people really love things. Maybe I'm not digging deep enough.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

disco is vice magaziney?

Chip Morningstar (bob), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i think its more that tracer is worried that the comments about the tracks on the disco thread are vice magaziney
i've never read vice so i can't really comment-i like the descriptions though,i'll have to get downloading

robin (robin), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

''sorry that was vague. I guess I mean that it seems like there are a lot of threads started about the same sort of things, and mainly negative things like misogny or that kind of thing. I wish there were more threads about how people really love things. Maybe I'm not digging deep enough.''

I don't 'dig enough' either bcz i don't have the time but I read the titles and I've been around long enough to know what is 'good' for me and what isn't. I'm sure you can do the same.

I see yr point abt threads being 'circular' but sometimes you can learn something new on those bcz new ppl come in all the time etc.

don't click on the calum ones tho'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, I wasn't born yesterday. ;)

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yes surely the solution to "pox: [absurdly broad subject familiar to few on ILM]" vs "pox: [ridiculously particular and focused subject familer to many on ILM]" is for those who know their way around the too-broad subject to intervene with brio and educate and complicate, not to step away sadly shaking their heads at the state of youth today!!

in other news: i am nearly finished w.my first "teach mark s a LESSON" response

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

''those who know their way around the too-broad subject to intervene with brio and educate and complicate''

b-but miccio might complain!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the "POX : disco" thread has gotten me into downloading lots of disco, pretty much (though I finally thought to search through the archives, but none of the existing threads seem any more "useful" than this one) (also as a great singles genre which is also way back before I was born etc, the POX : genre thing works in it's favour - not too much to be overwhelming, but enough to etc etc).
tracer's comments were really good (esp. since nobody else has commented).

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Robin, I didn't at all mean a dig at you. I fully accept that this can be a good way to learn some things (except it tends to be just lists of records) - I get exasperated at the bias towards particular areas of ILM (and magazines like Mojo say), and examples like those I cited are just a manifestation of that. I find it almost impossible to start thinking in such terms in areas where I love/like hundreds or even thousands of tunes, which is why I still haven't chipped in there. I'd be more keen to post one long thing about something not yet mentioned (say the Trammps sublime Penguin At The Big Apple/Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart) than a list of ten that I love best.

Thanks for the film/music crit pointer, Cozen. I've just read through the whole wonderful thread, and posted something that I think has some vague relevance (except it's mostly about comics, sadly). Lots of ILM's best and brightest on strong form. I miss Josh. Not got round to the 'jism' one yet, but I will.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah don't worry about it martin,i understood your point and so on,i just wanted to point out that threads like that were of benefit to someone-i only have limited resources and am trying to hear as much music as possible,so i thought it would be a good way to hear some disco...
i'm aware that i'm always dipping my toes into genres people could write hundreds of pages about, looking for a few songs to download or whatever, but i dont really see any other way of trying to get to know about all the hundreds of types of music i haven't even heard yet...

perhaps you should start a more specific disco thread, there are lots of people on ilm who know a lot about it(as you can see from the thread),i'm just not one of them

robin (robin), Saturday, 24 May 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I would have no problems with the big broad threads if there were occasionally more detailed threads that took off in those areas. It's things like my last obit thread for a wonderful if fairly minor soul figure getting one response that make it look as if the superficial overview is all we can get in areas outside ILM's core interests. Unfortunately my interests are mostly outside that core.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been droppin' mad science. That's all I know.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 May 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'vocal complexity prefuse etc.' thread really is good stuff

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 24 May 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Overacademic Bullshit thread is mostly pretty poor, but there are some great bits, most certainly including that Kogan essay.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 May 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

in other news: i am nearly finished w.my first "teach mark s a LESSON" response -- mark s (mar...)

HOORAY-y-YAY!!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 24 May 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin I think "pick only 10" is sort of ridiculous on the face of it, but then so is "Request For Information"; the former far-too-VH-1 and the latter too much like a visit to the dentist but there are benefits to actually trying to figure out what 10 you actually would want to put down, I didn't pick the "best" I just picked ones I had the most to say about.

Chip: according to Sarah Michelle Gothster disco is the new indie rock, so make of that what you will!! (?)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 25 May 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it rude to suggest that those of who complaining about ILM might find some other means of communication and not pin such high hopes on an internet message board?

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 25 May 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 25 May 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Re the Disco POX -- this is one thread where explanations might not be that necessary! The whole canon is so uniformly fantastic (even the mediocre stuff is interesting as a study in formalism) that you have very little to lose by just picking a title or two and diving in. Although I guess it would help to say "orchestral" or "Eurodisco" or whatever for people who are looking for something in particular.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 25 May 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that mean disco is a Good Genre?

If so, does it logically follow that there are Bad Genres - a notion that many have denied? (ie: 'every genre has good and bad... open your ears', blah blah.)

the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Polka is a bad genre.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You hurt Frank Yankovic in his heart.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'umpah' is a basically dud-studded realm

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I would've said the same, Nicole, before I worked at a folklife festival that featured polkas from Wisconsin and Eastern Europe (and a lot of norteno that sounded suspiciously like polka)--it can be a bracingly fun and engaging music.

I wouldn't go so far as to say no genres are "bad" because genres are constituted and identified by many different means, and someimes a genre is labelled simply to seal it off from other, more respectable but uncomfortably similar styles ("mook rock" anyone?). But in general I figure that if I'm resistant to an entire genre of music, it's due to my own laziness or some other failing and nothing else.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate polka because it is bracingly fun and engaging - it's like a bunch of plump, jolly people dancing around on your head. This does not make me a goth, though!

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole what is your actual experience with polka?

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

and a lot of norteno that sounded suspiciously like polka

For very good reason -- there was a large amount of Eastern European immigration into northeast Mexico in the late nineteenth century. They brought the accordions along, and that's why norteno and Tex-Mex and etc. has such a notable polka-related influence.

This does not make me a goth, though!

Keep telling yourself that. I have embraced the non-light, you can too! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned you sound like you're giving a presentation at that festival. Norteno has cooler drum fills than polka, but on the other hand they don't have tubas.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My grandfather was a great polka afficianado so I heard a lot when I was younger. I have resolved not to hear much since then.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

And thus does variety keep itself going in a world threatened with homogenization, my dear Amateurist. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned beat me to the Norteno lecture. I love Norteno.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(mark s lesson response 2 goes up tonight) (not yrs yet julio)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I figure that if I'm resistant to an entire genre of music, it's due to my own laziness or some other failing and nothing else.

That's surely quite possible. But why don't you (or I, or we) apply the same argument to your (my, our... ) resistance to anything and everything else?

I'm not really, seriously looking to have this discussion (it smacks of Old ILM, somehow, for good or ill). I just think the 'no bad genres', or 'never dismiss an entire genre' argument is a bit of an old canard.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to relate the two previous posts together and my mind has entered a trancelike state of bemusement.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Back to the original question: what's good on ILM?

I dunno, I just go for the ass.

is it a poster's ass or what?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends on the ass you sniff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna read that Charles Keil article where he calls out musicologists for largely ignoring polka.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 September 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Until the bickering started -- or more fairly, outside the bickering -- the "worst record review" thread (most of which is a discussion of a Radiohead review and of Radiohead in general) was good, I thought, and that's just something I clicked on randomly.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, as a main culprit in the bickering, I was focused on that ridiculously sucky portion of the bickering. But yeah, ignore everything I say and read Melissa's posts, those are great.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 September 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, not ignoring everything you say: it's the bickering aspect of the bickering that isn't good, not the content of the bickering, if that makes any sense.

Either way, though, yeah, Melissa's posts are terrific.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 19 September 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

kilian, whatever you do don't go near the One out, one in thread ;)

I've been enjoying the threads on specific songs - I always enjoy those, they seem more focussed.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 20 September 2003 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
It bothers me to be a hater n all, but after a summer hiatus from ILX, I find ILM lacking much of the spark it had...oh about this time last year. I know "ILX/M/E not as good as it used to be/t'ain't what it used to be" is the duddest of duds, but has anyone else found this? I mean no disrespect to many of the regular posters (or anyone in particular-*treads carefully*), and I am enjoying a lot of stuff from people like Al (in particular), Stelfox, Sonny A, and jaymc, but there really haven't been many killer threads for a long while, and it would be great if people got back in there and treated it like a frickin' seminar again. I don't really know what my point is- I just guess a lot of great posters have got other things to do with their time, and god bless those people if that's the case.

*rambles on for another five minutes*

Or is it just me?

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait for The Black Album, Adam!

rob geary (rgeary), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a feeling that Blount, Matos, Ewing, Raggett, etc. are all about to line up and kick me in the balls. Hard.

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Outkast temporarily sapped much of ILM's critical faculties by creating divisions and infighting. I suspect a conspiracy to destroy the dangerously brilliant minds over there.

rob geary (rgeary), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

TS:Outkast vs Vice Magazine vs Kill Bill

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh, I never open threads once they're past two hundred or so. Especially when the fights contained within start getting referenced on other threads. Suffice to say I haven't even trained my pointer on the Kill Bill thread!

Though I did just see the trailer for it on the Confessions of a Dangerous Mind DVD, and I'm actually interested in seeing it. I know reading that thread would punch a gaping hole in that interest. And probably make me despair for humanity in the deal.

rob geary (rgeary), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That is, I saw the trailer for the FILM Kill Bill. There is (far as I know) no trailer for the THREAD Kill Bill.

How did I get tricked into coming to ILE anyway?

rob geary (rgeary), Sunday, 19 October 2003 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

How did I get tricked into coming to ILE anyway?

It's like a maze. We'll all die here.

It could be that for many its an end of year thing.

but don't worry bcz that means many list threads [/vomit]

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 19 October 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I'm looking quite a bit through ILM right now (first time in a week i'm doing this) and this is a v good thread:

Is 'Man Needs a Maid' ridiculous?

Unfortunately there is some sexist rubbish on another thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 19 October 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Adaml, thanks, but I can't think of anything worthwhile I've posted on ILM lately! (This is not false modesty; all I remember writing are one-liners and lists!)

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 19 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

N. on the 'Man Needs a Maid' thread made me listen to (and like! something I've never once achieved!) Harvest.

David. (Cozen), Sunday, 19 October 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the "who are the beatles/bowie/aretha of today" thread is surprisingly good, about halfway through, after robin carmodys appearance, it then becomes all about royalty and punk and deference and politics and from then on is a great thread

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 19 October 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Adaml, thanks, but I can't think of anything worthwhile I've posted on ILM lately! (This is not false modesty; all I remember writing are one-liners and lists!)

It was more of a general impression. And I liked the SFJ Outkast thread that you at least had the good sense to start up.

Arrgh. Part XIII of the Geir franchise.

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but if you get past the typical dunderheadedness, it's an interesting thread. I mean, it sort of raises questions as to the ability of a genre to "die" and what circumstances have to arise for that to happen.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, not really, people kept feeling the need to acknowledge geir

It's good to see all the thoughtful dialogue happening on the various meta-P&J (mostly) threads, but I find that much of the time when I read them it makes me really glad I'm not a music critic. Also, it's getting more and more removed from anything that relates to what I enjoy about music, which is fine. I'm not complaining. I feel that I should be happy with these threads, but I'm not.

The "DareYou!" thread has a lot of potential, but hasn't taken off quite as much as I expected. (Incidentally, Martin Skidmore to the "Dare You!" thread, please.)

this: invent Acid Mothers Temple album titles!!
and this: "I'm not feelin' it."
are all pretty amusing, each in their own way. (The last one isn't completely a jokey thread, but I still thought it was funny.)

End of a half-decade: ILM kinda official Top 100 Albums & Tracks Poll - VOTE NOW!!!

Voting closes in two and a half hours.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 06:57 (twenty years ago)

And we now have a '90s poll too - nominating at present on THE 1990s POLL - nominations here plz, and people suggesting things for others to nominate on Filter your suggestions for THE 1990s POLL out of that thread and put them here..

The 21st Century results are all up too, at ILM Top 100 2000-2004: TRACKS and ILM Top 100 2000-2004: ALBUMS. The singles list is more acceptable than the albums one, for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 August 2004 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes, all ILM shirkers please nominate some stuff that will prevent it being swamped by US alt-rock. I have some suggestions here!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I would check those out if I didn't hate lists.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Besides the polls, modern ILM is in dire need of some quality control.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Please, Nicole. You don't have to vote - just nominate something good!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:50 (twenty years ago)

i find ILM quite scary

gem (trisk), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Make it less so!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:52 (twenty years ago)

I reprazented some Aussie stuff which hardly anyone else did, which reminds me I gotta go back and vote for tracks.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I will check them out tomorrow.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:55 (twenty years ago)

xpost - nah it can stay scary without me. I hardly ever post there anymore after someone was nasty to me for saying I think trip hop singers have sexy voices. This probably says much more about how pathetic I am than how scary ILM is.

gem (trisk), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:21 (twenty years ago)

gem- Just keep posting abt what you like and ignore the nasties. You'll eventually find ppl that like what you like.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago)

The idea of what might appear in an ILM 90s poll fills me with dread really.

However, it could also be a more interesting and suprising list in that the 90s predates ILM and therefore the kind of consensus that was pretty apparent in the Top 20 for both 00s lists.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:37 (twenty years ago)

US Alt-rock is the best music though.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:48 (twenty years ago)

this kentish weald, david, this kentish WEALD! (gareth), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:51 (twenty years ago)

oh gareth its just reminders: ppl are meant to look at those and think twice before posting their nominations.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:57 (twenty years ago)

The 2000+ poll demonstrated just how far I am from the canon, it was quite heartening to be honest.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah - I know the thread titles are confusing but please make your nominations (two tracks, two albums) on:

THE 1990s POLL - nominations here plz

The other thread is just for informal suggestions and as such is fairly useless.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 30 August 2004 12:21 (twenty years ago)

we could use more noms for The Most OMGWTFLOL Singles Of The '90s. The current nominees are listed here. I'm not gonna cut off nominations until Sunday or if peters out earlier. If we get a lot more noms I'll add a (ROFFLE) to the OMGWTFLOL.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago)

It's two nominations per person, but if somebody's stupid and puts more I'll usually count 'em anyway.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

As far as I can make out, no one has taken any notice of the pleas of mine and Martin. Except for gareth going to the wrong thread.

THE 1990s POLL - nominations here plz

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 06:32 (twenty years ago)

its really weird, i always think ILE is the one with the need of quality control, and that ILM is pretty much fine, or same as it ever was. At least I always check the latter before the former.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 September 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Is there an ILM thread about the iPod's artifical intelligence? Mine has a real love for Kate Bush, Aimee Mann and Miss Kittin, though this morning it played a long and statistically improbably Tim Hopkins megamix followed by Bright Eyes.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Aren't you more intrigued about how Bright Eyes got on there?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:48 (twenty years ago)

i am going to find out the truth ONCE AND FOR ALL on this iPod random = intelligent thing. i hear lots of theories, my faves being NO IT REALLY IS RANDOM, and as a second option that it weights depending on how recent you added to iTunes (i.e. recent = more likely).

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:50 (twenty years ago)

My Winamp once played 3 Neil Diamond songs in a row when on 'random'. I guess it was just in that kind of mood...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:51 (twenty years ago)

Neil Diamond IS kinda random tho

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Alan, the latter can't be right IMHO; as for the former, what are the odds that it will ALWAYS play Aimee Mann within the first 5 or 6 songs when on shuffle? She only makes up 1/200th of the playlist!

(doh, meant to say improbable T!m Hopkins, not improbably - "Improbably T!m Hopkins" sounds like a chick lit bestseller)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:53 (twenty years ago)

I'd buy it.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:54 (twenty years ago)

EXHIBIT A http://www.macminute.com/2004/08/26/shuffle

When confronted with theories about the way the iPod choses the random tracks, Stan Ng, Apple's director of iPod product marketing, laughed. "The funny thing about it is that it really is random," he said. "When you turn on Shuffle Songs, it creates a randomized list of all the music on your iPod without repeating a song."

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:07 (twenty years ago)

related article I can't read cos i don't have a NYT account: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/26/technology/circuits/26ipod.html

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Mark, your Aimee Man may be just a victim of the "pseudo" part of pseudo random. that's not meant to be a jab at Mann as a pseud - i mean that some quirks of recurrence maybe due to the pseudo-randomness (i.e. not truly random) of the shuffle function.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:12 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Is it really hard to create proper randomness on a computer? I hear it is, though I forget why.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Because computers follow logical instructions? You couldn't create a truly random list either. Nothing's random, except supposedly at some sub-atomic level that I don't really understand. Physicists?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 3 September 2004 12:13 (twenty years ago)

I know EVERYONE on ILX was waiting for the day when me and Rockist Scientist would watch the Latin Grammys together.

Best ILM thread ever:

"Down In The Tube Station At Midnight" by The Jam - What Does It Mean?

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:53 (twenty years ago)

I keep meaning to read that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:00 (twenty years ago)

You really should.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Mark - Bright Eyes the band or the song? I can't decide which would be better.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Bright Eyes the band, Madchen. I have Bright Eyes the song on their too, if that helps. I like one song by the band, that's all, even if I'd quite like to torture Conor 0berst so that he'd really have something to whine about, the spazz.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago)

My plan to make ILM good again: A collective effort by which everyone revives one (just ONE) of their favourite threads. Then discourse shall spring anew. Maybe the good old threads will inspire some choice new additions.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago)

ilm is been great lately. d00d!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:38 (twenty years ago)

ILM is really only good these days if you like country, noise, prog, disco, electro, folk, rap, house, techno, punk, metal, post-punk, glam, indie rock, pop, salsa, new wave, fusion, and Harvey Sid Fisher. If you don't like that stuff then you would probably be bored.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago)

what about grime????

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm starting to be really irritated by the Scissor Sisters. they were everywhere in the UK.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:04 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, grime too! And psych and krautrock and wacky 60's/70's/80's/90's stuff.

Why does black people never want to rock?

OK, here's a pretty good thread that I don't think many people have read. It hasn't been revived since it was initially started:

Blues and Rap

At least I THINK it was pretty darn good; I'm not gonna re-read the whole thing right this second, but since you asked...

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

That thread's good, if you can ignore the Calum posts (tho perhaps he does fulfill some role as the living embodiement of the NME's current demographic)

I also like the Power Pop thread.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 18 March 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Hey you punks there IS some good discussion on that new rockism thread. If you can't turn on your Geir filters that's your own lookout. Besides, at one point Tim noted that Nicole is always right and never wrong re: music, which personally I'm all for supporting (even when I disagree with her ;-) ).

Should music writing have a knowledge of musicality? Is ILM representative of music fandom in general?

Paranoid Spice (kate), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

afrirampo

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

I prejudged that music knowledge thread by the title. Didn't know it was started by a regular with references to Dan and Nabisco, etc. etc. Will check it out.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

What with me starting this thread, ages ago, and Cozen now citing an Afrirampo thread, I wonder if he has somehow heard that I am going to see them on Friday?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago)
