Was SteveM the creator of "Teh?"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

The last two came from talk on alt.music.alternative and may have older roots at that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I invented the hip hip hooray magical birthing day thing, and the "hello we're X, and we'd just like to wish..." Bass player or drummer "yeah! have a great day!" thing.

Oh and I invented the wheel.

Did someone on ILM start using as in "teh hotness" - or is that generic haxor?

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

n-n-n-no, jel - you discovered it :)

See the wiki article linked above, I believe its roots were in "teh win", gamer/hax0r speak in the mid/late 90s.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Ned is responsible for "Excelsior!" by way of Stan Lee.

i think i used 'excelsior' on my friendster testimonial to him without knowing this. i can't remember if the inaugural lol thread had excelsior in the title but if so i must've been channeling Raggett subconsciously

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

who is responsible for cockfarmer again?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow got it from Sojourner Truth.

I first heard "cockfarmer" from The Ewing Posse (either Tom or Ptee).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I suppose I did introduce 'Excelsior!' somehow. Yay! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I am very depressed because I think my grand contribution to the ILX lexicon is the word "bootyflakes" and it wasn't even my word.

Aslo: POO: Best Depeche Mode song

You know that thing where somebody posts something and it just hangs there in lonely, silent space until the thread withers and dies? I originated that.

briania (briania), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Also, the 'do not read if you hate us' meme, in numerous variants since, was created by the lovely Rainy with this thread title:

we now live on High Street (do not read if you hate us)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

i started the entire "defend the indefensible" thing!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

'Don't try it' = Ronan via Marcello (still perhaps the funniest post i ever read, can't remember the thread tho)

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Excelsior in the LOL thread context isn't Ned's doing, it was Stevem on this thread.

Also Trife of all people was the creator of the "This is the thread where..." meme, IIRC.

Tad rocks for Defend The Indefensible. That's one of my favourites. Unlike 'Fuck Washing A Hat' and 'OMGWTFROFFLE' which make me want to drown kittens.

The "X in Y shocker" is a standard device used by tabloid newspapers that dates back at least 20 years, so I don't think any of us can claim that.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Someone can claim using it here though. It's not something most people say in regular conversation.

Actually, I think you'll find that most ILX memes originated with Sinbad.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't that you? I started the actual thread, I remember...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I think I started the POX thing (as it looked prettier than PO10), or maybe I started the POO thing (as it looked better than OPO, and it's funny - poo, ha!) I also think I suggested the domain name (via mark s. & Pashimina & other haXor speakers), so hey.

(poo!)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I think I started the POX thing
Somewhere I once saw somebody claim that this was started by Geir, of all people, but I can't find it.

And the first one to say "HI DERE"- who was that man?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Credit: I, in no way, encouraged the use of "SHOCKAH".

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm fairly certain POX *was* started by Geir, in fact I think this

The Beatles OP10 (or, that would be, only pick ten)

was the first. Only, following on from OPO, he used OP10. so Dave might have changed it to POX, which works much nicer anyway.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Nick, I think the fact that we're the only ones who remember that goes to show that maybe it's an IL(ni)X meme. The proverbial egg in the briefcase, if you will.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I started DOO (Discard Only One) which was quickly discarded by all.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

You know that thing where somebody posts something and it just hangs there in lonely, silent space until the thread withers and dies? I originated that.

Wrong, that was me, Tha Original Threadkilla.

I also started the practice of italicizing blocks of text that are quoted from a previous post.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Dave might have changed it to POX
It looks like OP10 lasted about two days and then somebody changed it to POX, which again looks like it was Geir
POX - Blur

but OleM
POX - Madness

may have beaten him by 40 minutes and 66 posts. In any case, it came from Norway.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I started "come anticipate [x] with me", as well as the whole ILX culture of anticipation, if I'm being honest.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

ah, I love how if you type OP10 into the thread title search engine, like 80% of them were started by dave q. What a card.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I also started the practice of italicizing blocks of text that are quoted from a previous post.

My own claim: the way I remember it, I was the person who asked for "Turn Back You Poxy Fule" to become a genuine error message. I think it was Dan Perry who created the phrase.

There was, I'm told, a Victorian Scottish explorer called Joseph Thomson who made it his habit to shout "EXCELSIOR!" as he jumped out of bed every morning. My ex-bf was at one time working, in his spare time, on getting an out-of-copyright biography of him reprinted.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

i believe i started the thread on which the "pred ship" meme first appeared.

latebloomer: HE WHOM DUELS THE DRAFGON IN ENDLESS DANCE (latebloomer), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I think like 80% of the things we consider "ilx memes" are actually lifted wholesale from the Matos' stepdad thread.

How do you italicize the fonts? I seriously wanna know!

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

There was, I'm told, a Victorian Scottish explorer called Joseph Thomson who made it his habit to shout "EXCELSIOR!"
Also, Gomer Pyle's dad gave him a refridgerator emblem that said EXCELSIOR -as a good luck charm to give Gomer confidence in leading the troops. "Troops, prepare to mount. Mount."

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't "waterfalls of pussy" supposed to be whispered to someone's ear?

I'm kinda sad "breath of vulva" didn't really catch on.

Tuomas, Thursday, 12 April 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

I found out recently that Curt1s was responsible for "I obtain much hard one". hahahaha. And now he is going to kill me for outing him eeps *flees ILX*

Trayce, Thursday, 12 April 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

i was in sunset park at a bar watching a yankees game when i stepped outside for a smoke, an african-american woman and her son walked by and i heard her go "chillax? i like that one, i'm gonna use it". the son laughed and said "no, i don't think so".

it really surprised me as i always thought chillax was an ILX meme. i guess not?

sanskrit, Thursday, 12 April 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure i've heard it said in 'scrubs'. but then zack braff loves the internets so who knows...

sanskrit, i think i heard people say that out loud before written somewhere on the internet. it's definitely spread into the 'real world' and there's no way it originated here.

modestmickey, Thursday, 12 April 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

Who was is who said, "If loving you is wrong I don't wanna be wrong"?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

that's a very old and common american phrase, tuomas.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

oh wait i read the quote wrong. my bad.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

haha, so did I. I almost called you "intrepid" again.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

Jordan you probably could've rode that out

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

neither tuomas nor i deserve that.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

neither tumoas nor i would've deserved that, rather.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

That was aimed (but not fired) at Tuomas, if that wasn't clear enough.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

twas clear.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

amirite is not unique to ILX

The Reverend, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:55 (seventeen years ago)

anyway i'm pretty sure it was estela who came up with 'if loving you is wrong..".

i'm pretty much responsible for "jol out" on the football threads. this isn't much.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I thought "if loving you is wrong" was something Estela might've said.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i know

don't ruin my fantasy

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

i'm pretty much responsible for "jol out" on the football threads. this isn't much.

Probably stands as the most effort anyone has gone to to establish a meme

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

it wasn't an attempt to establish a meme, be fair. it was on the off chance that daniel levy was using ilx as a gauge for fan opinion.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

I think hen fap got ridiculous amounts of toil and hype for something that hardly even got noticed or used.

Abbott, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

it managed to irritate me quite a bit for a while there

electricsound, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

I never even found out what it was supposed to mean.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

1. hen fap
24 up, 9 down
Hen Fap is:
1) what kanye says in golddigger
2) easy on the tongue
3) whatever is necessary; i.e. shmoolike
4) a nonsequitur with longer legs than I thought.
5) a reference to a random onion article birthed over at the late aja/dante
6) apparently an excellent way to really make people upset which is very odd as Hen Fap is most decidedly:
7) pure, unadorned love

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

it always sucks when you see something you like here on ILX then you see it the next day at fark or something. which is basically every time.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think you'll be seeing "Gree hee hee hee!" on fark.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

As far as I know, last year, I created the term "pop forward" (a la Tim Gunn/fashion forward). Some asshole used it in the Voice last month.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

Mantaray, Siouxsie's blazing solo debut, earns those accolades with no trace of fatigue, padding, or confusion, as on-it and of-the-moment as Justin Timberlake. Working with producers Steve Evans and Charlie Jones, it preserves her classic black-and-white sonic barrage—what her Banshees work always mounted, whatever the style—this time accomplished with pop-forward guitars, a term coined by I Love Music poster "Tape Store", occasional horns and strings, and extraordinarily subtle electronicism.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

idk what you're bitching about, dude.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

uh, bitching?

Tape Store, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

it was a joke. you see what i did there by editing the passage with the phrase "forward-pop"... jjoooke.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

you shouldn't split your joke into two posts...Erm, or perhaps that's just humor-forward thinking.

Tape Store, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

i think it's a stupid phrase and never should be used again

Tape Store, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

Hen Fap was the unfunniest shit ever.

Trayce, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

the "if loving you is wrong" quote is from estela, btw.
