Here is the FAQ, if you want to know the rules we live by.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Its replacing this one:
SHOUT FOR THE MODERATOR V

No pictures please and thank you.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh esteemed Moderator... It has come to Our attention that the name of this thread: Feudal ILE is perhaps a misnomer, and it is Our Royal Gracious Wishe that it should be renamed "Tudor ILE".

Her Royal Highness Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Mr. or Ms. Moderator: I'd like the name of my thread "Matrix 3" to be changed to "Matrix Reloaded: Spoilers Here," please.

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

nice save!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Matrix Reloaded?

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That mistake was corrected.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering how I could have put the wrong title in the corrected thread subject. I feel better now. A little, anyhow.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, why do my web address and clickable link to the "about me" page not work on the "users" page?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I idiotically somehow managed to put a new thread up about Kelley Stoltz which belonged in ILM, not ILE. Could someone delete it and I'll re-post it? Thanks.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 9 November 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Done.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 9 November 2003 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

On the subject of moderating, how does one categorize an uncategorized thread?

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 9 November 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

nevermind, that was easy.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 9 November 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone knockout the password protected image on the recently revived Shiksa thread?

bnw (bnw), Monday, 10 November 2003 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(Alan has done this.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Could it be possible to add a plonk module to ilx, like the possibility to add some users in a personal "ignore list". I have seen it requested before, what is the opinion of the lizards on this?

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Either learn to ignore and be your own filter, or else get up from the computer, go take a break, and come back and ignore them (us?) when you are calm. I wouldn't want to live in an ILX where we could filter each other at will, no matter how much I sometimes think it could be a good idea.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it was pretty much decided not to ever do that, S

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If you've seen it requested before then you also know why we don't do it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately there's no real way to stop rudeness or other cruel behavior on the boards -- you can either ignore it or be rude back.

Nicolars (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If you've seen it requested before then you also know why we don't do it.

how come such a contrarian became a moderator? NO I DON'T KNOW THAT'S WHY I ASKED. please stop interacting with me? I've seen someone wish for this in some thread and that's it. I can't believe I'm actually justifying myself to that guy. I hate to justify myself for no reason. mr noodles, do shut up.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

you can either ignore it or be rude back

Or, you can be nice back - that really makes them angry. :)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it was pretty much decided not to ever do that, S

I'll have to revisit the concept of elective affinities for myself to see if I can hack it to connect with this matter of fact.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

how come such a contrarian became a moderator?

Something to do with some joker posting pictures of gaping 4nuses and spraying f3c4l matter all over the board if you really want to know.

RTFM my little would be socialist unfriend:
ADMIN: Killfiles?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Will someone delete this post of mine: http://ilx.wh3rd.net/postmarkread.php?msgid=3986191

gratzi.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

destroy destroy yeah yeah, my contrarian nature has destroyed it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

-----I'll have to revisit the concept of elective affinities for myself

Have fun, man!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Conan The Contrarian Vs The Rouge Monitor FITE.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

socialism aint got a thing to do with all of this.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You may notice a thread or two disappearing today, just cleaning up from C4lum.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think someone broke the blitzkrieg thread:
http://ilx.wh3rd.net/postmarkread.php?msgid=3998648

but in a very pleasant and sparkley way.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

nevermind, I think I like it that way.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm wondering what's up with all the googlers this last week. Is somebody big linking to us or something?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I couldn't tell you, but I am quickly becoming enthralled by this page
http://ilx.wh3rd.net/log.php?board=1
which was reset back on October 11th.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

delete please.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

delete this please. (godchrist)

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

why? (One option: I could fix the html, if you tell me what was supposed to be big and what wasn't.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing was supposed to be big. i messed up and left a "a href" in the title. dunno how things got big. also, i reposted already.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I got rid of the html in the title and all is now well.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks much. this duplicate should probably be deleted then.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

All the Lighning Bolt, Technotronic threads are getting a bit trying...

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i'm done. can't vouch for the technotronic though.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Could someone with mod privs on ILM pick a Technotronic thread as the "official" one and lock all of the others with redirect posts to that single thread?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i locked a whole bunch and deleted a couple of new barely started ones, someone can pick the "official" one if they really think it's worth it

dan wd you like mod privs for ilm?

not really a moderator (mark s), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I was enjoying those Technotronic threads.

(Jon L), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

why?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Also please change the title of this thread to "technotronic have certain flaws" since the original title is, in retrospect, really nasty.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd LOVE mod privs on ILM.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

done

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 13 November 2003 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

waaah! why the 'iron hammer' approach to technotronic threads? is it clm? this latest was quite a tricky query and now it is lost to the ages! waaah!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

if 'ys wz clm' ignr me

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM was flooded with a spate of these idiot threads yesterday.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"idiot thread" - well I nevah!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay!

(One Technotronic thread would have excited no comment, but about ten in a row with fake conversations made many of us weary.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I luv knowing that there's an extremely overzealous technotronic fan spreading the faith out there

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't thk i cd live in this world otherwise.

athos magnani (Cozen), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe a "technotronic fan = herpes" thread?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

or " = ass cancer"?

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anybody else picking up this noise on a couple of the threads?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What web browser are you using, bnw?

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Safari. It seems to be okay now though.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 13 November 2003 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

might be advisable on So What's Your Social Security Number? to do some wiping of what appear to be actual social security #s.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's totally my ssn.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I started a new "posts that made you laugh out loud" thread here, not knowing there already was a new one. Could someone please delete my thread. Thanks.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I locked and redirected it instead; maybe we can revive it when the other LOL thread becomes unwieldy.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a complaint but a bug report...

For those of us (like me) who prefer to turn on the "Hide Images" settings, sometimes the name/URL of the image link truncates the last "g" in the "yaddayadda.jpg" hyper link in that post, producing "yaddayadda.jp" instead.

Case in point: hstencil's pic link at the bottom of the "Best Record Store in the U.S." thread. Works just fine when images are not hidden, but when images are hidden, the URL takes out the last "g", and i get "something.jp" instead. Once I append the "g" to the browser text edit window after clicking it, the pic shows and it works fine... (and in this case, the pic in question is, ur DAHLING, really fucking freaky.. thanks hstencil, i love but i blame you, as usual)

But this doesn't happen all the time though, just rarely. Maybe a weird Mac/PC/IE/Netscape/Opera/Mozilla thing? So, um yup, there you go.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I have had the same problem as db.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Moi aussi (I'm using Explorer).

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And it happened again, with another hstencil pic post.

Stence, what's your platform/software for OS/web browsing?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Was the thread the had "Negro Talk" in the title deleted? b/c I was just going to say something (along the lines of 'you fucking idiot') and I can't find it now.

I mean if it was deleted that's cool, I'm just curious.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's still around -- here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I use Internet Explorer, so don't blame me!

hstencil, Friday, 14 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Mod pals, I keep getting this weird "Security Certificate" message come up on Momus' "Tokyo Fashion Thread", anyone else getting this? Ought we change the pics to links, coz they don't work?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 15 November 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot my Rockist Scientist password.

I also forgot the password for my old Rockist Scientist e-mail account.

Can someone deactivate my old account, so I can re-register?

(Some rockist scientist I am. I go on vacation for three weeks and forget all my passwords.)

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 16 November 2003 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm changing all my passwords to: iamafuckup

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 16 November 2003 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

would this be possible? if you have images turned off, having a link on a page called "reload this thread with images" so you could selectively turn whole threads pic's on/off without having to go back and forth to the settings page? just an idea, don't know how hard that would be

ron (ron), Sunday, 16 November 2003 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

At the "Active Users" page, what makes some user's names a hyperlink going to their "User Info" page? Somes are clickable and others aren't.

Sebastien (Sebastien), Sunday, 16 November 2003 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i think only registered names get a linky link

ron (ron), Sunday, 16 November 2003 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm registered but don't have a link.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 16 November 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my IDs (Martin Skidmore) has a link, the other (Martin Skidmore) doesn't. I have no idea what is happening. I confess I'd be pleased to see them merged, as I now top 10k posts here, and it would be nice to see that showing up.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 16 November 2003 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like my ID shattered into a thousand or five pieces. you can just number them: RJG1, RJG2, RJG3, RJG4, RJG5, RJG6, RJG7, RJG8, RJG9, RJG10, RJG11, RJG12, RJG13, RJG14, RJG15, RJG16, RJG17, RJG18, RJG19, RJG20, RJG21, RJG22, RJG23, RJG24, RJG25, RJG26, RJG27, RJG28, RJG29, RJG30, RJG31, RJG32, RJG33, RJG34, RJG35, RJG36, RJG37, RJG38, RJG39, RJG40, RJG41, RJG42, RJG43, RJG44, RJG45, RJG46, RJG47, RJG48, RJG49, RJG50, RJG51, RJG52, RJG53 and so on.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 16 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

am i correct in assuming we're locking all new technotronic threads?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I locked that one, and deleted a previous one. Personally speaking, I'd delete them before anyone posts on them, and if our resident 'tronic-head wants to go on abt them (which = fine, i mean they were ok and all that) then s/he can open a previous thread.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Sunday, 16 November 2003 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i locked the most recent one until i knew what was what.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 November 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I just deleted some ridiculous thread saying 'fiddo centington must die,' I'm guessing it's from our Technotronic lamer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone must die eventually

Ed (dali), Sunday, 16 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but not so forcefully.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

WARGH. Gillanders must die.
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), November 15th, 2003 7:20 PM. (later)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger Teeling (Roger Teeling), Monday, 17 November 2003 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you have three million <BR> tags in it, none of which are necessary. Are you writing it by hand or through a WYSIWYG editor?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for your reply. I use an editer (Dreamweaver) to create tables. It's the program that puts the tags in. But I learn that if I take them out (manualy) the problem will be solved?

Roger Teeling (Roger Teeling), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

After checking: Dreamweaver does not put the break-tags in itself. If you copy the html and paste it in a thread break-tags are added automaticly, for some reason...

Roger Teeling (Roger Teeling), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That's also not the truth: after you press the Submit-button, then the taga are added to the code. Strange huh?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, sorry about that. It looks like the ILX-ifier just sticks <BR> on the end of each line, and some constructs like it better than others. A workaround is just to take the text and stick it all on one line.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything in one line is working fine. Thanks for that!

Roger Teeling (Roger Teeling), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

on the Bad Day thread please obscure the poster's present username?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, please, can somebody do something before the hacks show up!!

Bad day

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, i'm very slow today ("today" ha) and am missing the point a bit. what exactly am i supposed to erase?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

just rub out all the s to the m to the e to the e.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

My 'secret' identity - I assume the ILXers all guessed but I don't want a repeat performance of this time last year, so jusd XXX it or or summit, please?

And that xpost to please!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you thank you thank you x

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

that won't help, really, but I don't think it matters.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Although XXX might have been better, coz you can still kinda figure it out and then read all the inane stuff I've written over the past year and write about it in the Daily Scum or somesuch.....I'll leave it up to your infinte Mod type wisdom...

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, i'll xxx it out instead.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect the tabs may have moved on, Plinkyy.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, we get the odd reminder every now and again - twas a big story round these parts - there was something in a paper not long ago too. I realise it sounds insanley paranoid to you but please, just humour me, 'k?

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Given everything she and we went through at the time Mark it's surely understandable not to want to take the risk?

Right, this is not a mods thing really but I want to find that thread where we were posting pix of the view from our back window/kitchen or something? And I can't. Anyone help?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The View From Your Back Window

Herbstmute (Wintermute), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

*mwah* Thanks!

I am feeling too sleep-deprived and blue to work, so instead I shall play with photos.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You know you just kissed someone who looks like Dastoor, don't you?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No he doesn't! Herbstmute has much better hair.

(Granted I haven't seen Dastoor's hair lately, but Dastoor is twee and Herbstmute knows about Disinformation, ergo, Herbstmute vastly superior.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Re tables:
When your writing tables, alot of times you end up putting in hard returns as your typing them, usually inbetween the tr tags etc. Since we moved to wh3rd, it was coded to insert a < br> whenever it saw a 1013.
So what you end up getting is a huge mess of br tags inserted inbetween your table, but not in the cells so they end up looking like
< table>
< br>
< br>
and so one
till your actual table.
or was it br br br < table> I forget.
Either way, it happened to MC Crudders and Dj Grizz when he tried posting photos in a table.

I could explain and probably remeber the incedent better if I had finished my coffee this morning. So back to the coffee I go.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ned i am a bit upset at you!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm right in thinking that the new software doesn't actually notice html at all, just passes it on? Because if possible, skipping the <br> inside tables makes a lot of sense.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends what you mean notice.
The easiest solution is to just remove all the hard returns from the message box after your done typing up your table.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

By notice I meant "can take different action depending on whether it's processing text or HTML". It must do something like that (I'd think) since it does html checking already.

haha these are two opposing but consistent definitions of "easiest".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I couldn't answer that off the top of my head.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ned i am a bit upset at you!!

*checks upthread* Oh right. Well if it happens again I could leave it? It looked like it came from the Technotronic oddball.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

everytime i try to subscribe to a thread i get an error saying:

, Monday, 17 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you logged in?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, you working on that one?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot my Rockist Scientist password.
I also forgot the password for my old Rockist Scientist e-mail account.

Can someone deactivate my old account, so I can re-register?

(Some rockist scientist I am. I go on vacation for three weeks and forget all my passwords.)

-- Rockist Scientist (AlainDelouz...), November 16th, 2003. (later)

Can anyone please explain to me what is to prevent any random person from making the same request with respect to anyone's account, should any of us leave the forum or become inactive for a period of time? Thank you.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't even see that. Yes we can do it. But I have no idea how to the question posted above.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

We could check the IPs, I guess, but it is a point we should always think about - to give someone a new password to an account we should have some good evidence that they are the same person.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i would think you could just email it to the account they signed up with, no?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

unless we're going for full-on sandra bullock movie/matrix style techno-paranoia, here.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

THE CALLS ARE COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ON YOUR OWN CELL PHONE

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you appreciating that the point of the request is beyond merely emailing the account they signed up with?

Perhaps we should discuss on the mods groups but if people sign up for a forum under a certain assumption of security or privacy may we consider that the onus for deviating from the rule should be on the person requesting the deviation? Unless we are all happy with a new rule that a post written by Poster __ may not in fact be by Poster __, depending on what the mods felt like doing that day.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

felicity droppin some legalese

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I am just curious what people feel comfortable with. If ILX has changed, then perhaps so should everyone's passwords.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The ideology I'd be most comfortable with: every ilx account is bound to the email address they signed up with. If you forget the password, you can retrieve it throught that email address. If you forget the password to your email address, then you're fucked. Create a new account.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, if we found the old account to be inactive for, say, 6 months, then I'm sure we could arrange to have it deleted and allow the original user to re-register under that name.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Seems reasnoble, there is no way we should be giving passwords out to anything other than the mail address signed up with.

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

you made cinniblount swoon, felicity.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so glad this news has been urgently communicated to all who feel a responsibility to check this thread on a regular basis.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You lost me there. Come again?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd imagine that the people that need this communicated to them are the moderators, and I hope that they all check this thread. I hope.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Logistically it's unlikely to become an actual problem. How many impersonation problems did we have *before* logins existed? How many people are using their real names anyway, and there isn't a lot of secret info in the logged in user settings, so if in theory someone else was given access to a regular's account, that regular would complain and the situation would be corrected, no? It's not as if logging in under a username gives you any actual power. Unless I'm missing something, even the old password would still be unknown. Sorry to be the anti-devil's advocate, but we're probably taking ourselves too seriously here, and what's the worst that could happen?

Kim (Kim), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem with giving out passwords is that people might, unwisely, use that password for other things so we can't give out a password unless we know we are giving it to the password's owner, the email address is the only identifier we have.

Ed (dali), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think anyone asked for that though - they only asked for it to be de-activated in order to re-register.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the user who can't remember their own password may be the one not to take so seriously.

Nothing wrong with it, just saying what is so bad about asking that type of user to choose another username if they forget their own email password.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it primarily inconveniences the rest of us who would have to figure out who that person was?

Kim (Kim), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah, I should double check but the passwords I thought were encrypted before being put in the table right? (feel free to correct me if Im wrong Andrew, Alan or G)
Anyways, I was just thinking they create a new login/account and we can replace the appropriate details (re password) into the old row and drop the dummy. I really should check to see how we create the password in the first place to make sure that works but Im in the middle of one of those weeks from hell at work.

That of course doesn't answer the point felicity brings up and nor for my own mental sanity am I going to try.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I really think it's terrible if the FAQ promises that if a user registers and logs in

"No one else can post using your name or email address."

and that turns out not to be the case.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If you forget your password and your email password then you shouldn't have a username reset we have no way of verifying identity.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The ideology I'd be most comfortable with: every ilx account is bound to the email address they signed up with. If you forget the password, you can retrieve it throught that email address. If you forget the password to your email address, then you're fucked. Create a new account.

OTM, and this is pretty much standard practice everywhere.

One of these days I'm gonna organezizied

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The passowrd/email account policy is totally fine with me in theory as well - just didn't see the harm in making the odd exception where it seems warranted. But uh, hold up - now I'm confused. How did Rockist Scientist even post with that username at all if it's supposed to be reserved by the log in? Shouldn't it have asked for the password on submit?

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway the best thing given this Rockist Scientist is to ask some obscure question about middle-eastern pop!

Then we will know for sure.

hmmm... I was trying to think up a response.. but having trouble! at least something that wasn't totally trivial. But you're right there has to be a similar thread around somewhere.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I've figured out the login thing now. This is way too easy to do. Not cool, eh?

Kim, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's see if this works too. If it does, this isn't really Mr Noodles - it's still Kim. Could be a problem I think.

I started a new thread connections thread not realising there was one currently extant. It's this one if you should wish to delete it. God knows there enough parody threads gunking up the place as it is without me fucking up. Ta.

Hello moderators! I hope this post finds you well. I would like to make an ILF moderator of one Girolamo Savonarola - could you oblige?

Best Wishes,
@d@m
xxxx

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

You should be able to do this yourself. Use the "Administer Board" link at the top of the 'new questions' page. Near the bottom of the Administer Board page should be a bunch of checkboxes you can click. It should be working these days.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Otherwise only Tom, Alan, Mark S and Andrew can help you.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

And anyone else who is an ILF moderator who has "Pass on" abilities.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like an IP address check on this thread, please:

The Lollies: classic or dud?

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Its a new one Kate.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

IP addres check doesn't give any useful information on this particular person.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

what about nslookup on the IP

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigh. Thanks anyways, guys. :-)

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Chopping the 97 off the end of it gives some interesting search results if nothing else. Where in the world is that?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any mods reading right now? I need help but I don't want to post it, I want to email someone.

Allyzay, Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

NEVER MIND!!!

Allyzay, Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Taken care of. Please read the appropriate thread (if you want that thread removed as well, please say, but I think a lot of people would be asking).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll just explain here, I don't want this much attention drawn to it:

I don't want asshats harrassing my coworkers while I'm still here and a couple things said to me by one person in particular made me very uncomfortable that they would respect that wish, so I think removing references et al at this point in time will preclude this problem since it makes it a lot more difficult (for starters you need the thread to figure out how to email)

Allyzay, Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

but that picture was funny!

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally, I realize this is really petty of me, but if i wanted at least a copy of that thread in text form (and promise not to repost it of course) could i request one? It really was one of the greatest ever.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

or tell us more hijinx over chat!

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually saved it (it was huge and I wanted something to read working on this other computer with no intarweb access etc etc no I'm not a mentalist). But it seems like a very good idea to not have it around whilst she's still working there...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw shit, I was really looking foward to the rest of that thread on my way to work this morning. Did we delete it? Did we save a copy of it beforehand?

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

it is "on hold"

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, I just remember my e-mail password.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I appreciate everyone's security/privacy concerns. I thought maybe confirming the IPs would have been enough. Actually, since I use the internet at work at times, theoretically someone else could be impersonating me.

Actually, I still don't remember my "rockistscientist@go.com" password.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to start a new e-mail account with an abominable, meaningless, pun.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally, your work thread was very entertaining and I was looking forward to finishing it, but I can understand why you would want it removed. I was a little surprised you posted it while still working there to begin with.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

this place is too boring lately!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

So liven it up, cinniboy!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

haha disco donut!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 21 November 2003 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This isn't a problem, but a feature request: would it be possible for when you go to the main ILX page, it say something like "Hello, (username)!" so that you know what name you're logged in on? This would be particularly helpful for 2 ILXor households like ours, where I have to log out of Sarah's name before I login as me. Currently I can't find out who's logged in until I open a thread and scroll to the bottom.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm, sounds like that might be easily accomplished on the main page by putting up the same two windows that appear just above the message entry box, but near the top of the main page, next to a "log out" or "change to another user" button. But I'll defer to the people who maintain the pages.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

(Of course, you could always just log out at the end of your session as a courtesy, too. ;)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

You could always check the Settings link at the bottom of the page.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Can you add a feature so that we don't have to scroll to the bottom of a page to figure out who's logged in?"

"You could always scroll to the bottom of the page and click the 'Settings' link."

"Gee, thanks."

(I am too easily amused.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, this may be a stupid question, but is there any way to "unclick" a thread after you've clicked it? Like, it looked like it was on a different topic from the title, and you don't want the red numbers coming up and trying to get you to click on it again, when you're trying to follow the other new answers with the red numbers?

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am easly confused by why Dan is easily amused.
They had to find a thread and scroll to the bottom of it. All they need to do is scroll to the bottom of any page.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Noodles, can you help me make the red numbers go away? (But only on certain threads?)

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I am easly confused by why Dan is easily amused.

Well, it's because they want to know right as they're logging in, so they don't have to log out and then back in again. Your solution actually added a step to the process.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed with Kate, that gets on my nerves when I do that. I'm all "ooh, new answers" and then "oh, dammit, it's this thread about football, why did I click on this?"

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Not at work I can't. Just bite the bullet and make all the red numbers go away. Besides, you only got 30 minutes of work left right?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, for future suggestions ... generally I'm in favour of the red numbers. But as Chris points out above, they get irritating. Perhaps a "Red numbers begonne, I don't wanna follow this thread any more" button to eat the cookie would be good.

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it's because they want to know right as they're logging in, so they don't have to log out and then back in again.

huh? I am easily confused today.
Apparently I am moving cubicles which sucks ASS. I liked the one I got.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What are the red numbers?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(Besides my new Marxist electro-pop band.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You can set the settings so that messages you haven't read yet come up in the thread titles with RED LETTERS.

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(Except the proper Red Numbers are bold, too, I think.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

huh? I am easily confused today.

1) Both Sarah and NA use the same machine to access ILX
2) When whoever is using the machine wants to "contribute an answer" they may inadvertantly post under the other's name if the previous person hasn't logged out
3) The request was for the user's name to appear on the ILX main screen so they could take care of that right up front instead of having to change all of that once well into the ILX experience.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean, Dan was just making a little joke that your solution to not wanting to scroll down the page was to scroll down a different page. Not a big deal. Just as my request is not a big deal, it would just be mildly more convenient. And it's a feature on pretty much ever other internet bbs I've been on.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Not my suggestion, mister. ;)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

3) It might be possible without adding another SQL query. I'd have to look into something.
4) The Red Number: Quite easily possible.

I've got other things i NEED to do like lask week/month. So kindly remind us as Christmas about these things.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if this is done, but i just posted a pic to the meerkat thread that didn't work and i really'd rather not fuck up an otherwise unbroken chain of tweerific quality, so can it be removed (it was supposed to be the Meerkat Lisa, meh)? If this isn't done never mind, sorry for the mess, etc.

jackson anderville, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

done!

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"bad jode"?? What have you done?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the slutsky appreciation thread explains it all

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The "threadkillah" thread needs some help- I don't have java or javascript turned on, but it still redirected to a tubgirl photo.

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 27 November 2003 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

[please don't tell people how to do that at the moment]
I think I sufficiently thread-safed that, so hopefully this thread won't start getting yanked along!

Hi.

As the 'user' (administrator) of I Love Cricket and I Love AFL, how can I 'blanket ban' a poster (ie lock out his email, tag and ISP no) if I need to?

Cheers,
Fred Nerk

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 27 November 2003 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Fred short answer, you can't neither can the moderators here directly.
BTW: Its an IP address. ISP = Internet Service Provider.
TCP/IP is Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Lyra, just was a little nervous about that up thread. Been meaning to fix that since Stinkypants Crudders used it on that hidden thread.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Harumph, I go to all that trouble going on a bug hunt to find things that may be a problem and this is the thanks I get!

Whoops, no problem Mr Noodles!

And thank you thank you for fixing everything!!!

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 27 November 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stinypants Memorial Redirect Crusher has a certain ring to it.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Crusher" hmm, appropriate. heheheh.

Krakerjack!

on, Monday, 1 December 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

OK!

So, why is it that whenever Hstencil or Blount post image links in messages posted to ILX that the last letter of the file is missing, when in "Hide Images" mode?

example: [funnypic.jp] or [hilarious.gi]

I obviously get the 404 when i click on it, then add the extra letter ("g" and "f" respectively) and it works. So, it's not an emergency, but it's been happening quite often, and I asked this question before and no one responded.

Stence! Blount! What browsers and what platforms are you running?

pete burns "lady look"

Are two threads about Pete Burns asking the same thing (and started by the same poster) really necessary?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"she" can put 'em up, I'll knock 'em down (or something like that anyway) I deleted 2 identical threads, and put a note on the earier similar thread saying don't post repeat threads on the same subject.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, why do my web address and clickable link to the "about me" page not work on the "users" page?

I still don't know why its happening. I know how to fix it, and did for @d@m (who for some reason was who I thought asked instead of Nate (Im easily distractable sometimes)). If you want me to change it back @d@m let me know. I see two people asking on this thread, let me see if I can fix them for the time being while I look into it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

db I told you I run IE and I'm absolutely convinced whatever browser or system I'm running has absolutely nothing to do with it.

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

At the "Active Users" page, what makes some user's names a hyperlink going to their "User Info" page? Somes are clickable and others aren't.

Aaah, the other person who asked (who is also not @d@m). It looks in the userscache to see if there is a username. If there is a value in there you get a hyperlink, otherwise SOL. I've got to get some sleep (mmmmmmm sleeeeeep), so I'll save it for later (written by the beat) to find out why some people aren't getting username stored in the userscache. Thats the important part to all this.
In the meantime, Sebastien & @d@m and Nate should be all fine and dandy in the userspage.
If anyone knows why, could you tell us and save us from having to grep?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

some of us don't log in.

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I was just about to come on here and ask about that. Ummm, for some reason, I'm back under my old name on the users list. I don't really mind that, to be honest, but I can't seem to change my settings now. Does this mean that all my posts as @d@m are now attributed to Nordicskillz?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

aaaaaa, let me change it back.

Does this mean that all my posts as @d@m are now attributed to Nordicskillz?

me jumping ahead of myself. You want me to fix it back to the way it was before?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really understand what's going on, but I like that the link to my blog is appearing on the users list now (couldn't get that to work before). If it ain't broke...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't notice the z and a, woooooooooooooooops. Bad me. Let me get that.

Didn't notice the difference between Nordicskillz and skilla

I can seperate the two, or just put them under nordicskilla if you want.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can combine them, great. if it's a hassle, don't worry about it. Thanks, though!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

There you go, copy and pasted.

some of us don't log in.

Thats why its one or the other. But for some reason, and I don't know why, its stopped inserting a username into the table incases where people are logged in.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i have this problem. is it because my browser automatically logs me in? i never log in, but nevertheless when i post i am "logged in" in that it doesn't ask me to log in.

Spinktor the Unmerciful: Well I didn't lock your thread or care to go over his antics again, I did find some links which may help:
(They are not really in order so you have to kind of watch the dates)
ADMIN: personal vendettas, vigilante action, etc
Zeig Heil the ILM administrators!!! Freedom of speech begone!!! Alison Moyet is sacred!!!
This Is The Thread Where You KEEP ON SHOUTING FOR THE MODERATOR! (starting around April 1st)
This is SHOUTING-for-MODERATOR thread pt. III!! [derailed: go to thread IV] (starting a little bit down)
Then there is his ILM threads that start pretty soft:
Idlewild: Cracking or Dilapidated?
Who's more overrated: PJ Harvey or Beck?
This the thread where you discuss what Holly Valance should wear and do in her next video
Kid Rock being eaten alive by a rabid polar bear at the zoo while lots of laughing people pee on his face
This is a thread about Shakira's bum
You wake up one morning with a horrid hangover after a mad party and see the good looking Scouser one from the Sugababes getting dressed in the corner of your bedroom...
This is another thread about the Sugababe question..
Some pop star re-inventions that would never sell
Inspiral Carpets - c/d
How much would you pay to be backstage at a Britney concert so you could ravish her sweaty red jump suit
This is the thread where Brits lobby Parliament to have an official "Holly Valance" bank holiday...
You guys see the paper this morning? Well here it is - I found it!!!! Emma Bunton's sex video link (seriously not suitable for work)
Could Alison Moyet's old undies be put to good use as nappies for orphaned gorillas in Uganda? [not safe for work]
Timberlake is humping Bunton...
UK Viewers - who saw Lauren Laverne on Never mind the Buzzcocks tonight? Pwoooooar! Chris Martin you're shagging the wrong blonde!
Calling on moderators - use of personal information
THIS IS REPULSIVE BEAHVIOUR
Who is more immature? Me or James cunting Blount who has signed up to the following...
Which is almost all threads on ILM in chronological order. The more offensive were deleted. And there are others that he didn't start.

Clearly?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe a name change calstars, it might be confusing some people because of the closeness of names. you should be able to keep your name really, its a shame, but it might be easier i guess

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

that is insane.

How's this?

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Noodles: I've never seen calstars change his email or login or say anything inflammatory in the way you'd expect C*** to if he was trying to insinuate himself in yet again. And C*lum himself has been around with much more obvious names and tone of posting, so I dont see the confusion, personally.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If we hadn't probably deleted I'd show you. And why now does this come to the fore after 3-4 monthes?
If Im wrong and the rest (or most) of the moderators agree then I'll stop. It will be less work for me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

But also, I could be wrong too, so thats cool, I'm not the mod here :)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I know calstars. his real name is nick douglas and he is 28 years old, probably.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 4 December 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Thursday, 4 December 2003 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Nick, just to confuse everyone by adding yet another Nick to the hivemind =)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 4 December 2003 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why doesn't the goddamn statscock reflect BOTH my email addresses? I swear, by now I've made more than enough with this address to turn up on the all-time list. But it just doesn't turn up. And my old email doesn't move. Grrrrrrr.

Yes, but we all know who 'n' is, and he talks about lots of other stuff too.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

My theory is that he's not anonymous, that his last name really is "Ramsbottom" and that years of psychological torture have turned him into an emotional delinquent.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

My theory is that people are seriously getting on some kind of moral high horse that few can justify.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

well, yr probably right (ex-poxt w/ URALLGAY, hehe), but there does seem to be a bit of this stuff recently (apparent 'new' users posting boring troll threads, usually wsex-theme) and though I'm not feeling particularly high-horsey abt it, the sheer pointlessness & empty stupidity of it annoys me a bit, but whatever.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but Pash, that's internet life, and unless we have some kind of tedious registration system we just have to sigh and move on. Getting all hoity-toity (and in some cases being hypocritical about it) is just going to raise blood pressure and cause fractious arguments - just like this one, in fact.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

there does seem to be a bit of this stuff recently (apparent 'new' users posting boring troll threads, usually wsex-theme) and though I'm not feeling particularly high-horsey abt it, the sheer pointlessness & empty stupidity of it annoys me a bit, but whatever.

I agree -- it's really annoying but it seems like deleting them would probably only cause more problems. It's a lose-lose situation.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't have to lose by just ignoring it, though. It's the beauty of the thread-based system.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

mark is on it. Deleting a thread just because it's from somebody nobody knows is going too far guys and it doesn't exactly encourage anyone new to post. OK, sure, it's a dumb thread, but in the context of ile, that thread is not that offensive. I mean come on - look at the competition.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It just pisses me off and disappoints me that it seems to be the fastest moving thread of the day, for fucks sake. Another one I'm not going to open but get annnoyed by. Viz TWIS, ect ect.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't have to lose by just ignoring it, though. It's the beauty of the thread-based system.

Yeah, ignoring creepy threads and posters has worked so well in the past. But then deleting the thread won't do any good either.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

nb that nobody actually has deleted it, and I don't think anyone's going to. Obv, it had been c*l*m....

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the only troll any of the mods really care about is c*l*m, and he's already proven himself to be a major nuisance here.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I find the need to delete such threads completely baffling. Jesus effin' Crikes. We can turn ANY thread topic into a serious discussion and/or party. And we enjoy talking about sex and boobs and jerking off. Right?

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

BUT NOBODY HAS DELETED IT!!!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

christ ile is such a bunch of fucking mother hens lately.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

what the fuck is everyone's problem?? no one deleted anything! calm the fuck down!

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't say anyone DID delete it. I'm saying the initial siren the thread set off... oh christ, nevermind.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Has that thread been deleted yet Pashmina?

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Who didn't delete it anyway?

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm responsible, I didn't delete it. I'm sorry.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

WILL SOMEONE JUST DELETE IT ALREADY?! OR NOT?! OR HEM AND HAW OVER IT SOME MORE MAYBE?!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what hypocrisy? NO ONE DELETED ANYTHING

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

enrique was being "clever"

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck's sake Enrique, some people expressed annoyance and disappointment at those threads, is that hypocrisy? Sign me up to the moral majority! Send me to burn Vines CDs!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-oh MY RESTRAINT SETTING HAS FAILED!

This is what it must be like to be Jess or Barry!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell I'm disappointed in myself for starting that thread!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean if ilxors have the freedom of speech to start dick threads, they also have the freedom of speech to complain about them.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Bear in mind I'm exceptionally grumpy at everything today. Fucking hell I bet this is what ILE is always like after 17.30.

Grumpy Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

IDIOT ILE

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry folks, still haven't deleted the thread. I'm still too busy trying to figure out how to actually get Dan installed as the Pope.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Enrique wasn't being 'clever', he was trying to see what the fuss was about. Spread over three threads. Being opposite of clever. I don't like the tits thread but it seems a bit much to delete it because worse has been posted -- as for 'disingenuousness', well, it isn't necessarily, everyone *starts* as a newbie after all, no?

To be fair I probably have contradicted myself somewhere and am a bit bored and in mood for scrap. Geezaesthetics 44: we can change our minds at will.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

People have the right to start whatever thread they want! They have the right to bitch whenever they want! I don't even think Calum should be deleted! Don't use me as an example! THIS IS NOT A REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT! Popearoni!!!!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

That's actually true, it is pretty funny especially since he seemed to be thinking that was my and blount's fault for a long time.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm lost. Somewhere along the line I'm getting called a dick, but whatever, fair enuf.

enRIQUE (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

OH for fucks sake. Forget I even brought it up! I thought it was C**** and overreacted. I don't hate idiots who post dumb pointless crap or I'd hate half of ILX. I hate C**** because of his history of disrespect and abuse towards other ILXers, rather than the moronic content of his threads.

I've suddenly had the news dumped on me that I now have to do a shedload of work BY THIS FRIDAY when I previously thought it was due by next Friday. Hence why my sudden rise in stress level and pressure. (And why I'm still posting at 6pm.) When I'm not stressed, I can ignore trolls. When I'm stressed, I can't take ANY annoyance getting on my nerves. Which means it's probably better if I stay away.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

shedload or shitload?

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit is fairly small and self contained (unless dumped by a nelephant). This work would fill a small shed, in fact, perhaps even a large shed.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends what you use the shed for, probably.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

take a chill pill, poindexter.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to mention the fact that BOTH THOSE FREAKING THREADS will be reposted IN THEIR ENTIRETY to the bloody "laugh out loud" thread.

Shoot me now. And bury me in a shed.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, maybe you just need to close internet explorer for now.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

just go on friendsreunited, and search for her name, thats what i did!

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, you are a total total bastard.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I'm gonna team up with Calum against you.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

?

i dont understand, apologies if i have crossed a line. this happened recently to someone else i know, they had been looking for someone and hadnt managed to find them, i looked on friendsreunited, and found the name, and it did turn out to be the same person once i had asked about the town, they just hadnt looked on friendsreunited. anyway, she did get in touch with him in the end. i had assumed, mistakenly it seems, that this was a similar scenario. is there any reason, why you too cannot pay the £5 to get the email off of friends reunited and email this person?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just joking, don't worry. But I thought for a horrible moment that the moderator I shouted on to remove the reference to her had turned out to be someone who knows her.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, no, i dont know her. i was worried there was some kind of terrible situation going on for a while there!

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

so, are you going to email her?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a bit creepy.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 12 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

OK can someone here please explain why we're continually deleting Calum's posts? He wasn't doing anything wrong(er than anyone else) on the Saddam thread and now the thread makes no sense to anyone who is coming in now, because people are responding to nothing. It seems like an awful waste of moderator time to go through and delete everything systematically post facto and also it's an awful waste of everyone else's time trying to have a conversation. Why not just make the board private already and be done with it if this is how it is?

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconded.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. I would also like to join Ally in asking the moderators to please use a little more discretion in deleting Calum's posts. I appreciate the deletion of his useless posts, but to erase his on-topic posts seems a little counterproductive.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate and Ally in weird agreement shockah!

Look, obviously, blocking him, filtering him, deleting every single post he makes ever IS NOT WORKING AS A DETERENT.

What WAS working was responding seriously to his serious threads where he (mostly) behaves himself, thus reinforcing his good behaviour with the carrot of attention.

I agree that his purely offensive p0rno threads should be deleted, without question. But when he's posting seriously, and you delete those threads, that is when he goes abe-bot and starts spamming everything in sight.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Fourthed.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It's my view that the moderators should do what they feel like doing.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My personal policy is to delete his shit, unless (like now) a bunch of people respond to it. In this case, I'd have dumped his first post, if I'd seen it, but once people had started to respond, I'd leave it, unless he started getting personal. That's my own personal policy. FWIW, I think he was several orders of magnitude more obnoxious and holier-than-thou, and to be honest, I wish people wouldn't waste their valuable time and insight replying to him, because it always seems to end up the same. I can't speak for the person who did delete his posts in this instance.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I no longer give a shit. Tim's right on. There are plenty of people on here I find to be metric shit-tons more annoying and infuriating than Calum's ever been and they're not going to get deleted. I guess we can all just "deal."

TOMBOT, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, we know he's obnoxious and holier-than-thou, but SO IS 85% OF EVERYONE ELSE ON ILX.

Obviously the moderators should do what they think is right, I'm just expressing an opinion and hoping the moderators take this request in mind.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe he's being obnoxious and holier than thou, but most people now know his schtick and if they don't want to get sucked into it, they don't.

I think it's less damaging to have him feeling like he's participating (albeit in his way) than to give him an excuse to go ape-bot.

Maybe this is appeasement and maybe I love Hitler or something, but what we've been doing in the past hasn't worked.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Deleting people for being "holier-than-thou" around here would result in just about every single thread ever being deleted.

Haha "moderators should do what they feel like doing" wasn't a motto that exactly worked for poor Graham round here was it. It's not like I actually give a shit, I just find it ultra-irritating and it DERAILS EVERYTHING EVER with people on the threads then asking WHERE'D THE POSTS GO? WHAT'S GOING ON?

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Only 85%?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The last messages I saw from him seemed to show him ready to start doing his usual lashout -- at the least, he seemed to be delighting in finding another way to trash his idee fixe, Mr. Blount. So I don't know myself on that front but I was placing mental bets that he would start in with his particular approach anyway within a few more posts.

Personally, Andrew's comment that he's a troll who was actually minding himself on that thread was probably the best assessment, because you can't ignore the fact that he's STILL a troll. I can't speak for all the mods but I find his sudden realization of error to be all too convenient.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(See, this is why long, long ago I was campaigning so hard for ironclad rules of moderator behavior because there are too many people moderating with different levels of tolerance for certain posts/posters.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, well I can put up w/obnoxious and holier than thou, b/c I've done that plenty here myself. BUT, most or all of the 85% referred to at least read & respond to what the person they're arguing w/ actually have posted!! Which is I think a big part of out wee feller's problem, BUT WHAT THE FUCK EVER. I didn't actuallly delete that lot, so what am I on about here anyway?

x-post - what ned said also.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

plenty of people don't know his schtick as well.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This is getting completely fucking ridiculous. Can we have a new board called something along the lines of 'I Love Banging On About Calum/Debating Whether Or Not To Delete His Posts/Deleting His Posts/Generally Talking About A Load Of Meta Shit THAT KEEPS COMING UP AND DERAILING OTHERWISE PERFECTLY OK THREADS'? And then ban talking about it on ILE? Please?

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

If he escalates into a lashout, then delete the lashout. Leave the holier-than-thou stuff where it is. We need both carrot and stick for this to work. Unacceptible behaviour is becoming personally abusive towards other posters. Not expressing extreme or stupid views, which everyone does.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

RickyT are you funhating AGAIN?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. My fun hating dander is fully up today owing to crappy tedious work and mild hangover.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sick of talking about it too.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan is OTM

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate OTM -- just delete the weird lash-outs. Deleting everything makes the threads hard to read. What is a troll, anyhoo?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

No, ironclad moderator rules specifically will not work, because every situation is so different.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't have your cake and eat it too, Kate.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You can if you stick your finger down your throat when you're done eating it.

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I fondly remember the days when the no personal abuse rule was actually workable.

Ages ago when I was a moderator I spent a long and boring afternoon writing a big list of moderator guidelines - not ironclad rules exactly but something designed to be public and make the mods more accountable. Did they ever get published anywhere? I probably still have them but it's not my business anymore.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, to be blunt but speaking totally personally as opposed to for the mods -- I don't think there's any kind of carrot/stick approach that would either help him or interest him. I actually think he's laughing his ass off over all the bitterness this has engendered, that this is just what he wants, and that he will continue to keep it up if that's the end result.

Dan very OTM.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(IOW, you can't say "the moderators should have the flexibility to act as they see fit" and retain the right to complain when the moderators act in a way that you disagree with.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And now Dan VERY VERY OTM.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the mods are doing a very good job in general BTW.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I do too, given what they have to work with.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you can think what you like, but what I am saying is that whatever tack we HAVE been taking clearly hasn't worked either.

There should be pretty hard and fast rules about *what* should be deleted (which there are - personally insulting, libellous, etc. posts, etc.) but... I don't know. I don't have any answers, and I'm not a moderator and you know what? I don't really care, go ahead, and if a flamewar of spasms happens now because he got deleted, well, have fun moderating that out of existence.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think maybe I should just stop posting when North America wakes up.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ban him or don't -- this half-assed "now you see him now you don't" game strikes me as every bit as childish as Calum's posts.

Another version of "you can't have it both ways": we shouldn't have people moderating on-line behavior if they can't moderate their own.

And though I generally agree with T that the mods have been generally good, the exceptions are very annoying and very avoidable.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Another version of "you can't have it both ways": we shouldn't have people moderating on-line behavior if they can't moderate their own.

I absolutely agree.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

''Ages ago when I was a moderator I spent a long and boring afternoon writing a big list of moderator guidelines - not ironclad rules exactly but something designed to be public and make the mods more accountable. Did they ever get published anywhere?''

Tico you could have saved ilx!!! its all yr fault (if they haven't been published anywhere, that is).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Rouge moderator wars! It's like Afghani warlords around here right now - the Noodles tribe are making excursions into Carruthers territory, etc. etc.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Here perhaps is a question -- if the mods agreed on a specific down the line approach to Calum that was publicly posted and enforced it, would anyone complain? And IF that meant constant deletion no matter what the subject or content of a post or what disruption it might cause to a thread, would anyone complain? Because that's the policy that a lot of mods favor, but being second guessed every step of the way is not going to help.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio, Tico has sworn not to interfere.

http://previews.diamondcomics.com/editorial/misc_articles/marvel_cards/watcher.jpg

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

But just this once...

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"I have sworn not to interfere!!!" [hands Calum Ultimate Nullifier]

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned: if there was one policy that was publicly issued and uniformly enforced, it would be vastly preferable to what's happening now -- and I think parties on both sides of the "let him post"/"kill him now" debate would probably agree.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If the decision is "delete everything" then delete everything, and delete it promptly, before people start response/debate, and don't edit his posts Gareth-style to be funny or clever.

If the decision is "let him post" then let him be subject to the same rules as everyone else - i.e. personally offensive, libellous etc. posts can and will be deleted.

But whichever it is, make the decision and do it, because the current mess is frustrating to us, as much as to him.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth edited his posts? Bad bad Gareth :(

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

when gareth edited his posts it = bring teh funney.

The only problem w/deleting as he puts it up, which is what I favour, and try to implement, is that between him posting, and some mod-type noticing, a bunch of people respond / argue w/him, giving him exactly what he wants.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If someone could fix the link to part two of "A user's guide to the culture industry," it would be much appreciated! Thank you.

youn, Monday, 15 December 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, if you want to delete threads on stealing Holly Valance's underwear then that's one thing (and I disagree with that too, but anyhow - 100 threads later on the topic, fair enough) but deleting posts which add to an actual topic is surely self defeating and very, very stupid?

In some cases I do, you know, want to enter into something a bit more serious on ILX.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Note to Calum: if you want to help your case, it might help to drop the Blount thing, and just let by-gones by by-gones on that.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair dos. Blout baiting now at an end. Promise. I expect him to respect that too.

Ta.

P.S. I can't promise future Rachel Stevens videos may not incite future thread deletions tho!

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 15 December 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you get the board yuo deserve. if you dont like something, dont do it. if yuo want a different effect, try something different. there is no reason why anyone has to be one dimensional or predictable.

or is everyone happy with the situation we have? one can only assume so, or behaviour of all concerned would be different

bill peterson, Monday, 15 December 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I object in the strongest possible terms to the deletion of C-Man's posts on the Saddam arrested thread. I've been away for a few weeks and don't know the exact context of Ned and Pashmina's highly emotional scissoring, but in the context of that thread alone their actions are simply, and outrageously, wrong. I'm very sensitive to political balance on threads, and I don't at all appreciate when people come in and prune out left-leaning posts with absolutely no justification. These 'moderators' are abusing their power, disrupting intelligent debate, make nonsense of sense, and being rude amongst people who are being polite. It must stop.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Excuse me momus, I didn't actually delete anything on that thread, an nor did ned to the best of my knowledge.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, whoever did. Apologies.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Pruning out left leaning posts on ILE would leave like no posts at all.

I think the moderators should just let Calum run wild. Either he'll wreak havoc again and lose some of his sympathizers or he'll play nice. Win win.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Either he'll wreak havoc again and lose some of his sympathizers or he'll play nice.

No prizes for guessing which outcome is more likely.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It was Noodles who deleted it fwiw, I'm not quite sure why he doesn't just pipe in and speak for himself on the issue.

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't at all appreciate when people come in and prune out left-leaning posts with absolutely no justification

This has jack to do with his political sympathies and everything to do with his general idiocy. Please do not assume any deletion is being done out of some rightwing plot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, don't you dare rain on my parade.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

This is sounding suspiciously like 'We invaded Iraq because of Saddam's general idiocy... Or some other reason. Whatever it was, it was the right thing to do because we did it and we are right. Because.'

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been away for a few weeks and don't know the exact context...

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I caught Saddam.

I was all like, "Eh, guys...check in that hole by the farm."

And they were all like, "Nah, man..."

Then i was like, "dude, trust me."

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha Momus is not bothering to understand what is going on SHOCKAH alert Dan Rather immediately.

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Its true. I told them to keep the $25 million. Fame and fortune changes people.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

goddam you just ruined my joke spinktor.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, what is the context? I mean, what justifiies people ruining a good, sensible thread because of other, silly threads I'm able to skip?

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(See, Ned?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Momus, I agree with you that the posts shouldn't have been deleted, see above. However, there's no weird right wing conspiracy going on to filter out "leftist" posts (as bnw said, what would be left of ILX if that happened?) but rather a bunch of people huffing and puffing over a psuedo-troll who likes to bang on about naked chicks and is sometimes mean to Kate, Blount and me. I mean honestly Momus, all you have to do is just read this thread semi-thoroughly and you'll see the context of the situation, whether you agree with what's going on or not.

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit Ally, don't you go ruining my fun, too!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I thought I was increasing it? It's not like giving Momus a sensible explanation ever STOPS him from continuing on.

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Your explanation just shows how right-wing you truly are.

El Diablo Momus-o (Nicole), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I wasn't saying there was any conspiracy, just that there is a sort of political ecosystem within a thread, and when you prune it for extraneous reasons, or to punish a poster (pompously) for crimes committed elsewhere, you are disrupting the political balance of the thread and generally spoiling everyone's thread ride quality. YOU are being the 'trolls' (to use a word that should be left back in the dark ages where it belongs).

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(See, Ned?)

Noted.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I agree with Momus on this one. I have no problem with people deleting Calum's threads as they are usually pretty pointless and meant to be distracting. But deleting his posts from certain threads often makes the thread unreadable since there are tons of posts referring to what Calum has written which has been long redacted. Plus, if people still find his point of view worth debating, then it should be debated.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Talk of trolls = poster apartheid.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

My God, I love all of you. (Except Dean, of course; STOP BEING SENSIBLE AND GOAD MOMUS MORE PLZ.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you want to be a moderator, Momus?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm very sensitive to political balance on threads, and I don't at all appreciate when people come in and prune out left-leaning posts with absolutely no justification.

How many signatures do we need to get Momus officially disowned by the left?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you want to be a moderator, Momus?

I don't even want to be a poster much at the moment.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

momus but a) c-man arguing that americans are bad ppl or about re-election chances for bush aren't leftist arguments per se. a group of right wing republicans could equally take any position on the political atmosphere of the u.s. population and bush's re-election chances therein. and b) c-man saying *anything* makes what he's saying less credible, becuz of guilt by association.

yr. arguments are more credible without his endorsement.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

haha momus as moderator would only delete fashion threads!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Dan, I love you for your first comment on that "banner" thread though, so look deep into your heart and there you will find me.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

If we could just establish here that people just have a spectrum of opinions and that it's our right to discuss them but not to suppress them, we might achieve something. And banish the word -- and the concept -- 'troll' while we're at it.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that was tried on Usenet.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 15 December 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I thought it was a tad overweening on the unfairness. I was quite happy to chat to Calumn on the Saddam thread; he wasn't posting anything objectionable or faux-naif anyway. He wasn't arguing from a perspective of left or right either, rather it seemed like a case of assumed liberal bias (FWIW the ALB squad doesn't consider feminism an issue worth discussing when setting the world bang to rights because boobs are distracting). Which is fine, if I can tolerate the vitriol of Oscar Mayer I can live with any viewpoint but that's a Voltaire issue anyway.

Ned, you've made it well clear you don't like C all that much purely based on his posts but in all fairness you were gnawing the Doomie chew-toy long after the fashion had passed, and even at his creepiest we never deleted *him*. So maybe you need to re-think. I don't know how much form C has on hassling outside of ILX but I do find that quite a few posters have come here purely on a wind-up mission and wound up liking it so much they cut it out and stopped awhile. If only all bad guys were as easily solvable!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

MORE MOMUS PONTIFICATION ON 25-YEAR-OLD INTERWEB TERMINOLOGY, PLZ

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Less Momus, more rock.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Suzy is right about the Doomie parallel. I stumbled across a Ned - Doomie exchange from 2001 and it was full of the same vitriol I now see in Ned's C-Man responses, the same troll-hate. I think of Ned as balanced and conciliatory and polite, and this just puzzles me. I think it's something to be worked out between Ned and his therapist, frankly. It shouldn't disrupt sensible threads.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

He's just tryin' to impress chixor, leave him be u bastards.

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

One's therapist = the 'moderator' with privilege to delete parts of one's own brain.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Who killed Walt Disney?

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

you have confused "therapy" with "lobotomy" I am afraid.

Allyzay, Monday, 15 December 2003 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Anne Coulter.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Ned's behavior towards Calum and Doomie says more about Calum and Doomie than it does about Ned. Namely, that they are fucking assholes that can even piss off the nicest, most rational guy in the room.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

And they can piss of Ned, too! (ha ha ha, er)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is loooong

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean you fucker I now have 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' on Internal Jukebox.

But to be fair, Ned did eventually start being chill around Doomie. Perhaps this is tipping point, hmm?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, could we ask the moderators to please practise therapy rather than lobotomy on the threads?

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You could, but some of us would be too busy giggling to do anything. Win win!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Nurse Ratchett, the straightjacket!

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Woo, Nurse Ratchett was HAWTT.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is loooong

Yes it is. Is it time for Part VII?

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

But doctor, he's a doctor!

Nonsense, he only thinks he's a doctor.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Lock and load at 500, Jode.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

can we stop evoking my name. the only time i come on here is do to a search on doomie. yes, yes, i was a miserable fuck. yes, yes. its all there. but can we have a moratium on the 'doomie' thing. its getting kinda weird that i can be away for two weeks and realise that people have mentioned me everyday. o.k.? i mentioned to norman via email that i would like to post on here but its impossible for me. i realise that. hell, i don't care anymore. but for godsake please stop evoking doomie all the time like i was reagan from the goddamn exorcist.

doom-e, Monday, 15 December 2003 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

thread continues here
